  • Do you have a P0706 fault code? This may be the fix!
eManual Repair Manuals for Any Vehicle - shrsl.com/43l4o
In today's episode we are fixing the TCU (transmission control module) that is causing the P0706 fault code. Also causing the CVT transmission to randomly 'forget' what gear it's in and goes into neutral while driving. This is a VERY common issue with these Audi A4s and A6's.
We remove the transmission control module and send it to Module Masters in Idaho to be rebuilt. This costs about $200 + shipping and did end up fixing the issue we were having.
I have listed all parts, tools and resources below that were used in this video.

Hi! Having PRNDS all steady lit up in my Audi A4... cheap scanner rekons it's a fault in the speed sensor (integrated to the TCM) still goes through all gears but no cruise control... anyway, I just bought a refurb TCM from china and a cloning tool... $1500 AUD including freight, expensive but nothing compared to what companies charge here just to refurb yours (quoted FROM $2.755 AUD that's crazy!!!) Will arrive home in 9 days or so. My plan is to follow your video step by step, got the tools already. Will remove old TCM and have it ready to clone it's data to the "new" one and will put everything back (reusing gasket and probably using a digital torque wrench to avoid striping those bolts😅)
Hope to get it done properly.... Wish me luck 🤞 I am not a mechanic, work as a labourer in construction meaning no knowledge but happy to try and learn through the process (oh and I'm broke too hahahaha)

He fixed my module in one day. I use the same pump from harbor freight, but stuffed a paper towel around the hose to fill the gap when pumping the fluid in the transmission. 11:46 the module is a easy fix if you know how to solder aluminum wires, the electronics of this unit is the most cheap and disposable one of the many electronics units of the whole vehicle, inside you can find a Hybrid electronic circuit covered with a soft high temperature resistant resin, this hybrid circuit once that fails, it can not be fixed. The main problem: internally there are an array of mechanical bonded aluminum wires making the connection between all the hall-sensor embedded in the external plastic columns and the internal hybrid circuit covered with soft resin. Those internal aluminum wires are exposed to the changing temperatures and vibrations and this can cause in the future a permanent damage to the hall-sensor and to the hybrid electronic circuit causing overheat to the internal circuits storing a permanent error. If you open the unit carefully with a drimmel and the resin looks oily, it is game over, the excess of heat cooks the resin and you will find some wire unbound, but if the resin still transparently clear and some wires are just unbound, the only fix is to solder those wires back, if you have the skill to do it. Congratulations you will save yourself a lot of money and get a lot of money 🤣, if not, contact me and I can give you a good price for this repairs 👌, oh and about the instrument cluster... that's also easy to fix😁, oh and the triptonic same problems😉

I don't have any problems while driving, but the letters PRNDS sometimes stay in red and sometimes normal. My question is, does it relate to the TCU (Transmission Control Unit)? When I put it in D or R, it vibrates a little, but when I accelerate, the vibration stops. Is it due to the transmission? And the last question, at how many RPM should it be when it's in D or R? Thank you for your time, and thank you very much for your videos! Greetings from Chile.

When is the last time the trans fluid was changed? Is the fluid at the proper level? That's the first 2 things I would check.
For the code, The ECU is telling you that there is a problem with the Transmission Output Speed Sensor 2 (G196). It's not seeing it electrically...hence the "No Signal" code. According to the Bentley Manual the G196 sensor is inside the TCM; so, if it's bad you will need to replace the TCM or find someone that can repair it for you. The sensor could be bad or you could have a wiring problem. I wouldn't order any parts until you have verified that there isn't a wiring issue.

Is this common because of limp mode? He refused to proceed and insist I should replace the transmission. I'm at the point where I can spend $4-$5k or
    Replace TCU myself for $900.
I have the ability and knowledge to do the job, it's just I have a clam shell driveway and it'll be up for a week-ish. The car has 41,000 original miles! Again I'd just like to know if the VBelt code is possible from bad control unit.

It would be VERY beneficial to have a VCDS system, which isn't too expensive. But most importantly, you will need to match your transmission code to an exact used one. I just tightened them down hand tight with a 1/4 turn. Cross pattern when tightening and haven't had any issues. They don't need to be really tight. Plus you will have to leave it running for a while while its lifted up so you will see if its leaking. But it shouldn't give you any trouble just making them hand tight🤙🏼

    • @mif1965

Thanks for the reply @@Mechani_Cole. I Google and found the specs somewhere: 10nM for the TCM bolts, and 15Nm for the 12 case screws. For the pattern I just went as the bolts were on a clock, i.e. 12,6, 3, 9, 1, 7 and so. No leaks and just a happy accident with one of the 18 mm bolts that I snapped because my torque wrench basically did not work. I'm buying new bolts and replacing them later. Another question regarding adaptation: after filling up and checking level, I did the D+10meters+stop for 10 seconds, R+10 meters, stop for 10 seconds, seven times in a row; I still feel the gearbox is trying to do something really clunky sometimes. Is there any other adaptation process to follow? I have ODBEleven Pro but there is no adaptation application for the A4 B7 (which makes my mad as they advertise it does)

That's a lot of issues. Both engine codes and transmission codes will require diagnosing and multiple fixes.
Sometimes I take my car to the dealership or a good shop and pay them only for a diagnostic fee, usually around $200. But they find everything wrong and suggest the correct fixes. Sometimes it's worth it when having as many complications as you have. Once you get the diagnostic report, you could repair the items yourself if you have the tools and know how.
