I love the self-sufficiency (and cost saving) of making my own tools. I used fine gauge nichrome wire and made clay handles that feel good in my hand, then bisque-fired them. I was able to make a number of sizes and shapes, even double-sided.
(I also like to make wooden shaping tools out of wide popsicle sticks - and I'm loving how easy it is to make lovely, soft edged feet for my vessels now.)
BTW, I'm working my way through your videos and learning a lot. Thank you!

Late to the party but I think I would draw on masking or painters tape and then stick that to the measuring tape before cutting. Excellent idea and tutorial. Thx

I've heard of doing this but I really appreciate the demo of making these.

Thank you so much, I'm so happy to see this. We have a broken tape measure and oh boy I am going to give it a better use now.

Great vid John! I've used the strapping for larger trimming tools- never thought about using an old tape measure for finer tools.

This is an awesome how-to video. John, no wonder your students at PSA loved you. It is very clear instruction. I want to make one!

Fab tutorial thank you! I’m going to make some better handles with your wrapping technique. I like to make loop tools with the long stainless steel “rib” under the rubber part of used windshield wiper blades, and thrown street sweeper bristles are another thin, strong, free metal. Great channel, thanks again.

I lost your relpy, hm? But used wiper blades are often sticking out of the trash cans in front of auto parts stores, seems many folks change them out in the parking lot, different wiper brands have different gauges of steel, and a few cheapos are all rubber. It's easy dumpster diving ;-)

Suggestion: they sell foam pen/pencil grips at the office supply story. Might be useful and easier on the hands. Then instead of using twine, use something strong and thin like dental floss.

Yeah dental floss! That would have been a great thing to use. Very strong.

Is the string Nylon... or Cotton? Does it matter? Supposedly Cotton shrinks when it gets wet.

A synthetic would be more resistant to the wear and tear of the clay and water.
