    Converting an old DB into a new DB via a wizard is amazing. I used to spend hours trying to migrate old DBs. Also a big thumbs up for Thomas&Mom list.

    The task section could be done before using a single Task database and adding filtered views inside each project/page. It is the way I manage my projects in Notion. I am glad they added this because it's easier to make changes. Thanks for the great review

    For me, at least on my iPad Notion app, it does offer the Home page but a bit parred down at least for now. It's got the Recents and My Tasks. The way I found it was scrolling down towards the bottom of the iPad app and there it was.

    Kinda nifty, I hope they ad a pegboard/shortcuts area as that’s about the only thing different with my own dashboard. And text size adjustment on mobile apps, one of these days, ugh.

      Home just pulls from your original database, so as long as you use the three properties to create it as a task database, then when you need more details from that database, you can select it by keeping the database name showing. It will take you to the database with the extra customizations.

  • @mechakoush

    I did buy your full template, and I tried to love Notion but when creating a To-Do Task or Event and hitting Done takes multiple steps and there are areas where you may hit or move or change settings while doing it makes it extremely frustrating, I wish if you could just design the templates and lock 90% of the customizability options. just my honest opinion.

    • @mechakoush
      @mechakoush 7 місяців тому

      Also, I love your approach and content around productivity and life improvement topics, and I hope you are able to guide notion and push them to make it a little more intuitive than just a strong platform for databases that can interact well together.

    • @ThomasFrankExplains
      @ThomasFrankExplains  7 місяців тому +1

      That's definitely one of the trade-offs with a tool like Notion. The part I love is that we're given a set of tools that we can use to build things much closer to the way we want. With my templates, I'm able to give people a starting point that works perfectly well out of the box if that's what they want - but also lets them customize nearly everything if they happen to want to change things.
      But because it's easy to change things... well, it's easy to change things. And even if we could lock things down, doing so wouldn't be a 100% positive thing. While it'd help the folks who want things to "just work", it'd add complexity for those who want to be able to quickly customize things. It's trade-offs all the way down 😁
      When it comes to checking off tasks though, I find that to be pretty quick, personally. The Done checkbox is pretty much always visible. If you're having trouble with that, feel free to open a support request in our community (we're able to track those more easily than UA-cam comment replies).

    Frank, do you know if they are going to add syncing with Todoist like they showed 3 years ago?

    • @ThomasFrankExplains
      @ThomasFrankExplains  7 місяців тому

      Not sure, but you can build that sync yourself using Pipedream, Zapier, or any other automation tool that supports both Notion and Todoist.
      Todoist -> Notion sync is nice because I believe Todoist has webhooks. Notion -> Todoist is a bit less ideal since you have to poll the Notion API, but still doable. 2-way sync is also doable, but more error-prone due to Notion not having webhooks yet.

    • @ThomasFrankExplains
      @ThomasFrankExplains  7 місяців тому

      They haven't said anything about it, but I wouldn't be surprised. And I don't think the calendar widget conflicts with Notion calendar, since it's right in the Notion app itself and useful in context with other widgets.

    I'm not convinced by this feature, yet. Seeing suggested, trending, recent... my alarm bells go off. These features are typically useless or trojan horses in my opinion. Microsoft has littered them in their interfaces, and they're precursors IMO to AI and advertising. The fact you can't remove them furthers those alarm bells. Why make them compulsory?

      @tammy They want to attract new users and make them try the platform But they get lost in the Sandbox nature and leave.
      By putting these upfront, Older power users don't want this as it's going to interfere with their sandbox nature, something that Notion is known for

  • @mrdeanvincent
    @mrdeanvincent 7 місяців тому +1

    I don't really understand why they did this. Isn't it just a less-customisable-than-usual page template? Why didn't they add the new features (ie: the 'recently viewed' block, the 'multi-database task view', etc) as new content types? Then we could build fully customisable 'Home' pages which better suit our individual purposes.

      My take: I think it's a way for them to both test out new features in a sandbox of sorts, and to give very non-technical users a dashboard that doesn't require them to build anything and that removes most opportunities to make accidental changes that can break things.
      Personally, I agree with you - I'd love to have all these new tools just available as blocks so I can use them in my own builds however I like. But I recognize that there are many different types of users!

    Honestly what a convoluted system, it would take you hours just to get information into this setup. It's better you took the time and actually prepare for your meetings. This thing needs 10 years of refining. Why not have a task button that when click brings up a template that you populate and set as a task.

  • @BasVer
    @BasVer 7 місяців тому

    That Home feature looked quit promising. Tried it on my second brain, but in the My Tasks widget, I cannot filter for a checkbox called 'Archive' which is in the (task) database, rendering it useless for me. I don't want to see all the archived stuff (I'm using the PARA modelin my second brain).

    Bah. Unfortunately, the lack of filtering options on tasks have made Home unworkable. I consolidated all of my tasks into a single database to fit in with the new Project/Tasks paradigm. But my workflow tasks (repeating check-lists for each stage of a web design project) all get filtered out of my main tasks with a single property, but I can't do that here, so it's just populated with hundreds of unchecked irrelevant tasks. Sigh.
    Great video though.
