ATTENTION: MOVEMENT SPEED CORRECTION Hey everyone! Just wanted to clarify something with regards to shield movement speed. Upon further testing we discovered that while shield will not slow down your movement speed while sprinting, it DOES SLOW DOWN WALK SPEED. This is noticeable in both strafing left and right and moving forwards and back with a shield in hand. Furthermore, the Medium and Large Shield appear to be the only shields that provide a speed debuff to walk speed. This is why you might notice footwork is a little harder with a shield in hand. We also tested if it mattered whether you were at full sprint or partial sprint (1 chevron being partial vs 2 chevrons being full sprint). To test the partial sprint we did a race where both people repeatedly tapped the sprint key instead of holding it. By doing this neither person hits max sprint speed. The end result was that both people finished the race at the same time. In conclusion, sprinting with a shield (whether partial sprint or full sprint) does NOT slow down your movement speed but walking with one DOES slow you down. In recording for the video we only tested different scenarios with shield movement speed while sprinting and didn't think to test with walk speed. I apologize for the slight misinformation and plan on revisiting this topic in a future video for further clarification. If anything else is found with regards to shield I will update you all here. Thanks again for watching and supporting the channel!
To further point out the use of shield on your back, you can save it for bigger or harder fights or if you feel like further dunking on archer players, while running at them you can time a jump and twirl with their shot so your back is pointing towards them when the arrow lands it feels about as good as countering an arrow while charging at them.
@@Football4ever0 hold down the button that switches weapons and that brings up the weapon radial wheel, then select the icon showing your current weapon and shield and it should put it away, there's another way to do it but that way is bugged
Man this content is gold. I really appreciate all the work. Would love a detailed breakdown of initiative during feints, counters, and combos someday. That's one area of the game that seems super inconsistent between weapon matchups and is generally confusing for me.
The big question for me besides the movement one was also the problem of lowering the shield block and then raising it again feels slower than a weapon block
Started using light shield on Man-at-arms to reinforce jab and counter discipline. Rewards your jabs with higher jab damage and not countering = easy shield break and death.
I block them with my sword then charge them and take their heads as I am an archer punisher I go flank and find them. Love how stunned they are after blocking their arrow then charging them as they try and run. Also if they try and get the mele weapon out I aim at their arm and take the arm off before they can grab it. Sometimes I let they go with a warning knowing they can’t fight now or use the bow and I let them run off 😊
Lovely Video Mate thanks a ton! Love the comprehensive mechanic breakdowns like this ! clear concise whilst still thorough and in depth.. i hope to see more content made in this manner more often on youtube.
The bigger the shield, the more relevant parrying and ripostes matter. With a small shield, you should jab and attack more because the HP doesn't last and should only parry/riposte as a last resort. Heavy shield has the most HP but that also mean more potential ripostes and being less burdened by parrying. You can fish for kicks and attack when you see the animation. Medium shield is where it's the best of both worlds (more jab dmg than 10 and enough shield hp to last with enough counters) so it can be used however way you want at the cost of less walking speed than small shield. Countering preserves any shield and is always a must but you should realize the type of shield you're using can be used beneficially based on what they were meant for. Shield size is proportional to either offense or defense in their respective outliers so you should jab and attack more often with small shields or parry/counter and attack enemies who try to kick you out of parrying.
Hey I am subscriber #450 lol. This is a great video! I think there is a lot of lesser known tactics that there isn’t of info on like this that can be useful to a lot of players. Something I can’t find much info on is environmental positioning. Like high ground vs low ground, fighting enemies with a ledge to their back to keep pressure on and movement to keep them in that position and best places to put barricades and traps in the environment. Just an idea I can’t find much info about that I personally am interested in.
nice one sweater. one thing i'm curious of is whether or not cancel to block is faster with shields. I feel like i can actually do CFTP (CFTB) with shield where it normally wouldn't work with a weapon without a shield. Food for thought perhaps.
I like the shield but I have that’s it breaks or your character drops it. Leaves you with your sword but after fighting with your sword for a while you drop that to.
My favorite thing about the shield is how you get one good block and then your shield is ready to be broken and you have no stamina. Yet some kid can crab walk and swing a highlander sword for years, never running out of stamina Ahhhhhh "Realism"
Yep I’ve seen the impossible. enemies getting hit and hit but seem to take on 7 with stamina still blocking and win then run off with good health it’s like WTAF???
Stamina drain is determined solely by the weapon you're fighting. 30% of the incoming weapons base damage is how much stamina you would lose when you block with any weapon weather its 2 handed or 1 handed. 10% more if its a chop weapon, 25% more if its a blunt weapon.
Shield skins are purely cosmetic. The shields on all the different classes have different health. Small shield has 200HP, Medium has 300HP, and Large has 400HP.
I can't argue with 2.25k subscribers, but ditching the background music in intructional videos like this great one is a good way to help your audience hear and retain what you've got to teach them.
For the shield movement speed, you might want to test it on Team Deathmatch instead of FFA, with both players being on the same team It looks like the player with the shield lags behind, then begins moving faster than the shieldless player until they are side-by-side. I believe that, despite not looking directly at the enemy player, the guy with the shield is being sped up by the chase mechanic The Movement Speed stat also doesn't have an effect on top speed, it only determines how quickly you are able to reach top speed. Because of this, the difference between the arrival time of both players in a long sprint like this would be fairly small, but the movement speed debuff is very noticeable when attempting to use footwork while fighting an enemy
You are very correct sir. I did some more testing last night and discovered it does slow down walk speed slightly (hence the footwork difficulty) will make a comment when I get home and pin it. Thanks again 👍
Wait what’s the difference in combat between L M S shields in combat. I understand that the smaller shield has less HP but aren’t your swing animations faster? This video made it seem like there is no disadvantage to a Guardian using a L shield vs a small shield? Sorry if I missed it I waltched the whole video hoping to understand and still don’t.

So just unequip it while walking and equip again sprinting
The tool tip for Javelins say they do extra damage to shields. It is a shame you did not test that.
Excellent science. Good job.

Big shield+dodge+stamina aggression=win most fights against non shielded opponents.
You guys really out did your selves on this one very informative great explanations enjoyed watching

Your amazing at explaining the game and its mechanics. You clarify it so well. Good job 👍
considering this is 9 months ago and you may already kno this
you can apparently counter arrows if you dont have a shield which is pretty cool

They can also block a shot from a ballista.
