    Urban sketching, house sketching or travel journaling is rightly having a moment, but how do you get started? Perhaps someone has asked you to draw a portrait of their house - where do you start? In this short film, I show you how I would sketch my home in pen and wash. It's not perfect, the lines are wonky, but does it capture the feel of the place? The question is, does it feel like home?
    I am drawing in a Moleskine A5 sketch book, but you can use any paper or book you like. Just remember if you plan to add some watercolour it must be able to stand up to it. I start off with a Uniball Eye pen and then use a fineliner 0.2mm. But again, use what you have. If you plan to put any water on top, make sure it is waterproof. A splash of colour applied with a waterbrush, is as close to how I would be painting 'out in the wild'. If I were sitting outside, rather than in my studio, I would keep all equipment to a minimum and just use what I had to hand. I also show you how you could use grey watercolour brush pens if you want to add tone and shadow. The ones I am using are the WHSmith version of the famous Tombow pen. You don't need them - again just use what you have.
    We will work in layers, making sure each is dry in between and in total it took about 25 minutes. The photo I worked from is in the community tab of my channel. Please feel free to use it if you want and tag me @lizchaderton on social media if you share the results, as I'd love to see what you do!

    Nicely done, Liz....keep using the best paper you can....I do and it's more fun....shading can easily be done with a light w/c wash of dark color.

    I live in a mind-bogglingly beautiful medieval hill town in central Italy, jammed with gorgeous 13th c. stone buildings and I haven't yet worked up the nerve to get out into town and the little stair-streets and draw it. Maybe I should try doing a few from photos first. Don't know why I'm scared to try.

    Hello Liz, I really love your sketch colouring and all.
    I have a question for you , what do you think makes the difference in having a drawing look like yours instead of having one that seems to be drawn by a five years old child?
    I am a very beginner but I don't understand what is missing for me to achieve something that looks a bit more like an adult drawing.
    Thank you for your help 🙏

    It's funny because a Moleskine Sketchbook is actually pretty inexpensive. And the paper is very lightweight, warps with watercolor and most artists don't use them anymore. They are very inexpensive. Look at the perfect Sketchbook by etchr for instance. These people need to just bite the bullet and realize that better quality the paper the better their sketches will look. And most of all the easier it will be for them to complete their process. Be brave. Be bold.

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Рік тому +3

      I agree wholeheartedly, and funnily enough I did a review of Etchr watercolour sketchbook a few weeks back. Personally I like to make my own….

    • @mollygilfillan6551
      @mollygilfillan6551 Рік тому +1

      Because I’m new at all of this, esp, I’m no c omfortable with a high price sketch book like etchr, for fear of ruining a page, moleskin is not cheap for someone like me, cheaper o Canson is a good practice paper, even copy paper for warm up. Just a different point of view I guess?

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  Рік тому +2

      @@mollygilfillan6551 The quality of your paper makes a big difference to the outcome if using watercolour. If you try watercolour on copy paper it will cockle really badly. Having said that, I encourage people to use whatever they have and not to put off painting because they haven’t got a certain supply. Canson will work perfectly for this type of urban sketching. Making your own book works out cheaper than buying and is very satisfying
