I love the loose sketch. They’re both great, but I think loose sketches are technically more impressive and visually more interesting to look at. Communicating through hints of shape and pops of color without being literal is really hard.
Love the contrast... it’s a powerful teaching tool... honestly I like both for different reasons. I think I would employ precision drawing to record heritage or historical houses but for on location urban sketching, the loose form is definitely more manageable and also a great way to do a travel documentary... thank you for sharing!
That's such an insightful comment - you're right, a different technique depending on what you're sketching. Something historical where getting the details accurately would be more important vs capturing the energy while you're urban sketching - that's definitely cemented something in my brain by putting it in this way, thank you!!
I love both of these sketches so much. That said, the looser one just pulls me in more, and I’m sure part of that is the more whimsical nature of the loose one plus the use of the negative space in the foreground. 🎉
I guess I’m the odd one out. I do like both but prefer the tight one...probably because I’d find it more manageable as I really rely on using pencil and eraser to get proportions figured out. I’m still developing my artistic eye for these things. Thanks for sharing!
I like both. The first one had more color and detail. I like the second one too because you showed how to work quickly and if you're traveling and sketching you might not have a lot of time.
I love both of these to be honest. Entirely different moods generated by the two styles. The tighter one gives a bright, sunny feel, the wilder one a darker, wilder feel. I really love your style, it reminds me of children's book illustrations.
I am generally a detail person, so you would think I'd prefer the one on the left, however, I think the one on the right is more interesting, but really I am having trouble choosing one over the other. Both great. Just found your channel -- great art.
I like them both, but like the loose sketch more. I prefer to paint not so precise.I like to let the paint do the work, I prefer watercolor over the other paints because the way it flows and mixes with other colors. Great job and comparison.
I like both. So maybe something in between? Like the loose one with more details like outline the plants or something or the tight one with some splashes thrown on
They both have their own charm tbh. I like the fact that you just get on with it as usually a clean page can be quite daunting along with fear of it not working and looking terrible. I don't think it matters one bit that you're not a 'trained artist' as you are learning your skill as you go. I found my Uni Fine Art course useless for training in this respect as we had to do 'exactly' what you are doing now in finding your own way. You can choose to be a loose sketcher/painter or take the more design/architectural option perfectly sketching your vanishing line but the choice is always ours and it's our unique mark making that is recognisable just to us. We'll never get everyone to like our work but that happens whatever style you have so good for you. I think you do great and more than that, you're inspirational to us all with your encouragement and learned tips ;) Loving your vids.
I love them both. I think seeing them side by side, I would "purchase" the tight one because I can see the details that were left out of the loose one. But if I just saw the loose one on its own, I would put down money on it too. You definitely inspire me to not put so much pressure on myself. And I love the idea of letting the first watercolor layer determine the edges of the house. Very organic result. Beautiful!
I like both, but righty loosely is the one that feels more expressive, which I always gravitate toward. I'm learning a great deal from your posts! I often get my sketches to the stage of lines being down and then choke when it comes to adding in the layers of color and shadow- I either don't go far enough or overdo it. You mentioned the recurring fear of the drawing never progressing past the "a five-year-old did this" phase: it's the same for me and I was grateful to hear someone else say it!! Glad to have discovered your channel. :)
Ha ha - my boyfriend gets frustrated if he hears me complaining my sketch looks like a 5 year old has done it...because I say it every time...and 99% of the time it comes out totally fine. It just has to go through the ugly stage - its a rite of passage...! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
I like both, loose because it's quirky, but then slightly leaning more to the tight, because your eyes are drawn to all the detail... Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
I enjoyed your video. I was glad to hear I was not the only one who douted their artwork. I have been going back and forth between Tight and Lose sketches.
I LOVE them both. First sketch is beautiful and more special than a photo to document the subject (in my opinion) but I am particularly drawn to the "quirkiness" (if that's the right word) of the loose style. The looseness and splashiness create TONS of interest, character, and personality. Those qualities tell a story about the house which I find very compelling.
Hi Taria, I just bought both copies of your ebook. I love your work and think you have inspired me and I think I would go into urban and travel sketching as a hobby. Thank you for the inspiration. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️Greetings all the way from Singapore 🇸🇬.
Yes, I also love both. It actually gives us space to enjoy each of them either together or separate. I for one enjoy a range of styles. I love variation.
I’m a recently retired illustrator/graphic artist and have many technical illustrations and watercolor paintings in my portfolio. Before I retired I played with an acrylic palette knife painting that took maybe an hour. My coworker said it was the best thing I had ever done. You never know!
I like them both and believe both would be suitable in different applications, if I was to choose then for me it is the tight one as I am more architectural than arty and the accuracy pleases me. But as mentioned I would happily have the loose one hanging on my wall as well! Great work and very inspiring.
To be honest, I prefer the loose sketch. It looks so... well loose, fun but has everything needed. Thanks for sharing this variations side by side. It was very interesting watching it. 👍
I love them both, but I think the loose one has more character and personality. Actually... now I look at them again the tight one has tons of personality, but the loose has even more. Win win!!
The colours in the tight illustration are better, brighter, & cleaner, but I *really* like the bottom window on the loose one because of those shadows in the glass. My eye goes straight there.
Fantastic! I love both styles but the looser, quicker one on the right is my favourite. Seeing you complete both is such a wonderful way of learning. Thank you!
Love, love, love it!!!! I don’t think there should be a thumbs down button. Thumbs up is all that’s needed and comments for constructive criticism. If you don’t like something then stop watching it rather than a random thumbs down which leaves people wondering what they’ve done wrong and unnecessarily knocks their confidence. You inspire me! ❤
I prefer the loose one. I love the concept of freedom and just going with your instinct. It seems to me that if you want realism you photograph, whereas a painting reveals the instincts of thevartist as well.
It is "I think" vs "I feel". Both are fab.
I like the way you described this
Love them both but prefer the loose one … and the time needed to create it!
I love the loose sketch. They’re both great, but I think loose sketches are technically more impressive and visually more interesting to look at. Communicating through hints of shape and pops of color without being literal is really hard.
That’s such a great way to express it, thanks Adrian 🙏

Perfectly said 👍❤️
Amazing love it, thank you for sharing.
Number 2 , it seems more magical and my imagination runs wild with it
2 for me 😊
Loved this! This house is actually located in Hamilton, Ontario Canada (my city!) and I love both styles so much!
Ahhh that's so awesome!! Finally, I know for certain where this house is from, its a beauty! Thanks Lindsay :)
I love both of these sketches so much. That said, the looser one just pulls me in more, and I’m sure part of that is the more whimsical nature of the loose one plus the use of the negative space in the foreground. 🎉
Both are awesome 👌
TSA.. your very talented,to produce two great examples,of a particular style..I guess now do both style's on one house half and half..ha..🤔
I really like both, cant really choose. Both love pieces
Surprised myself thought I would like the tight one more. But the loose one wins for me interesting
The loose one ! Enjoyed the video thanks
2 The loose one is very charming, and funny, although option 1 is beautifully done too..
Both are wonderful but I LOVE the expression in the looser sketch ❤
I love both! But the freedom and organic quality achieved in the 2nd really speaks to me. Much more fluid (pun intended) in its form.
I guess I’m the odd one out. I do like both but prefer the tight one...probably because I’d find it more manageable as I really rely on using pencil and eraser to get proportions figured out. I’m still developing my artistic eye for these things. Thanks for sharing!
Both paintings are awesome...but I loved the details of first one....❤️❤️👍👍👍😍😍😍💯👍
I like both. The first one had more color and detail. I like the second one too because you showed how to work quickly and if you're traveling and sketching you might not have a lot of time.
Thank you!
I love them both, but number two matches my personality and it's the one I'd frame!
I think I prefer the left but I absolutely love them both, so different. They seem even more different after watching the process.
Thank you Kate!
This is excellent. I do prefer number 2. Very delightful to watch.
I love both of these to be honest. Entirely different moods generated by the two styles. The tighter one gives a bright, sunny feel, the wilder one a darker, wilder feel. I really love your style, it reminds me of children's book illustrations.

Thank you so much Mary - glad you're enjoying the channel!
Both are excellent and give the observer/watcher a lot of information and choice of different approaches to the same subject
I like them both, but like the loose sketch more. I prefer to paint not so precise.I like to let the paint do the work, I prefer watercolor over the other paints because the way it flows and mixes with other colors. Great job and comparison.
I always light the "tight" style better! The loose style is actually much more difficult to pull off. Thank you.
Both are well done. Hard to pick. I may lean to the loose sketch but I would hang up the tightdketch on my wall.😊
I like both. So maybe something in between? Like the loose one with more details like outline the plants or something or the tight one with some splashes thrown on
I like the one on the left better. Very nice.

Love them both! But how do you get such vivid colours. I can't seem to get that with the waterpaint.
Love both of them but the loose one wins for me. You are giving me inspiration to have a go. Thank you.
I love them both. I think seeing them side by side, I would "purchase" the tight one because I can see the details that were left out of the loose one. Loose style....both are great!
Loose sketch! I need to learn that method of painting. Brilliant.
loose is more fun, i do appreciate the effort on the first. probably good to mix it up from time to time.
Thank you J!
It's a tough answer. They both look good.
Beautiful, Thank you, Taria's Sketchy Adventures, a big hug from Colombia for you
Love the loose. You seemed to enjoy it more. Do what you love x
Both illustrations are superb!

loving both, #1 edged out #2 by just a lit
tle!
Thank you Marilyn!
I prefer the loose one. It attracts my eyes more
I like both, loose because it's quirky, but then slightly leaning more to the tight, because your eyes are drawn to all the detail... Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
Beautiful work. I like them both. If I had to pick one it would be the tighter one. I can picture it framed and hanging on my wall. Love it.
Thanks Jane!!
Great video. I prefer the looser one. More to my taste. Still like the neater one though 👍👍
Thank you David! :)
Really like both but the one on the left is my favorite. My daughter prefers the one on the right.
Thanks Mitzi, glad you both enjoyed the video!
Your art is interesting and beautiful!
I know its 2 years later but I love the loosey goosey one on the right! Both amazing
I like the loose sketch, I think the colors pop out more.
I like Both , my fav is the right one because sky is interesting
Thumbs Down? Unbelievable! Please ignore them Ilove your paintings xx
I enjoyed your video. I was glad to hear I was not the only one who douted their artwork. I have been going back and forth between Tight and Lose sketches.
Love both. ❤ but 2 is what I would pick.
Both are great but I prefer the loose approach! Great video! Thanks
Both of them are beautiful to me!
Both are amazing, that’s for sure. But I do prefer the loose one. 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Katherine :)
Love both.
Love them both and it’s great to be able to paint in both styles. If I had to choose only one, I would probably lean towards the loose one.
i love both styles of drawing! i think they could be used at different times but overall i definitely enjoy the looser style!
I think I really like the loose one!! Well done!
They are both wonderful, however, I’m leaning to the ‘loose’ as it has more quirky character!

Love both…#2 is my favorite! ❤
Both are great! No.1 is my fave though!
Thank you!
I'm in love with the tight one! I'm going to try and recreate the loose one for a gift and see how it goes haha
Love the loose one..I love all your videos..thank you so much for the videos..
They both have remarkable qualities. No favorites, both just inspiring.
I love both but I think I would go with the loose sketch.
LOVE the loosey goosey. LIKE the tighty whitey.
I like the loose one more, it looks much more artistic and original
What a fascinating demo! I definitely prefer the loose one on the right.
Thank you deejay!
I like both. I love the left
I think the loose sketch is better because is more abstract and expresive and even noisy, I really like that one although both of them look great
I love them both, but the loose style is more interesting to me.
Number 2 lose sketch.
Excellent work!
My favorite is the first one! Enjoyable video, thank you!
My 8 year old prefers the loose sketch!
Awww 😊
I'm a real beginner, and love the loose sketch approach and watching your video spurs me on, I love the effect, thanks
The right one, the looser one, is my favorite. I can't for the life of me paint loosely like this.

Both are very good but I prefer the loose one. It has a certain character and uniqueness about it.

Ha ha, exactly, some times that's the way it works out!
I honestly love both styles.
Such a lovely illustration. Thanks a lot for sharing
You’re welcome, thanks so much for watching!
I love them both and I'd love to get comfortable with doing both of these
I like them both and believe both would be suitable in different applications, if I was to choose then for me it is the tight one as I am more architectural than arty and the accuracy pleases me. But as mentioned I would happily have the loose one hanging on my wall as well! Great work and very inspiring.
To be honest, I prefer the loose sketch. It looks so... well loose, fun but has everything needed.
Thanks for sharing this variations side by side. It was very interesting watching it. 👍
Thanks for casting your vote! The loose sketch seems to be the overwhelming favourite on Instagram too! It’s been an interesting experiment ☺️
I love the loose one
It looks natural
I like both! Too hard to choose just one.
That's ok, you can choose both :) Ha ha
I love them both, but I think the loose one has more character and personality. Actually... now I look at them again the tight one has tons of personality, but the loose has even more. Win win!!
I love them both ..... but my favourite is the loose one xxx

PS. Prefer the loose one when side by side, but still like the other also.
Love your commentary. Thank you for the inspiration!
