Lance looked pretty smooth with that pump/sampling. Well done, Sir 🍻 Rather than carry a large, pricy, box with all of those fine pump & sampling accessories... I much prefer to take my empty Miniature bottle of Jack Daniels that I enjoyed while donning my waders. VERY spatially efficient and the lack of a measuring device has never been a problem for me.
I like to look for bug hatches , just in case i want to eat , lol. Geeat content guys. Awesome. All your content is great man! Keep it rolling! Stay blessed! 👊
As a fish biologist I don’t agree with taking a stomach sample from a fish. First off, you just caught the fish with a bug, so you know what it was eating. Second, you stole that fish’s meal. They need that bug more than you do to know how to catch them. Third, most people don’t have the training or skill to collect a sample that doesn’t harm that fish. I wish people would stop suggesting taking stomach samples from fish as it does nothing but harm fish.
It’s a fine mesh screen usually goes over your nets allows you to capture tiny aquatic bugs and dial in on what the fish are eating but picking up rocks in the waterand watching the bugs flying around is definitely important as well
@@jimmymani Thank you for that, I have never heard of that before this video. Plus, I was obviously incorrect with my spelling……”oops!” Thank you for confirming the correct spelling.
Method #3 is a bit pointless if you want to know what are in eating as to question of what are fish eating when you get to river first time up. You have the flies to catch said fish to carry out method #3. Method #3 is usually used if fish catching slows down.
This would be a correct point of view assuming fish only ate 1 type of insect at a time and you could definitively rule out other variables (location, drift, size/color etc). Just an example, let's say you're fishing a "red fly" and it's catching fish every hour or so. Then I come along and tell you to switch to the "blue fly" that will double your catch rate. Would you turn down the "blue fly"? Fishing never slowed down for you on the "red fly", so the same assumption would apply. Either way, it's just fishing so enjoy what works for you.... :)
Or how about you go from catching 1 fish every other hour to dialing in what they're eating specifically and now you're roping a lot more fish? Happens a lot actually. Toss an attractor nymph, it's doing ok, do a sample from the throat (not the stomach), find a bug you hadn't been throwing, tie on an imitation and now you've cracked the code. We realize a lot of people aren't out there to catch fish, so we can certainly understand the desire to limit what you catch and save time for other more important things. Keep trucking, pard!
Hate to see the stomach pump. I have seen way too many fisherman use this wrong and basically abuse fish. Also it is just another excuse by rookies to keep fish out of the water too long.
It’s a great tool, but one you gotta make sure you’re doing correctly, or you shouldn’t be doing it at all. IMO, a throat sample should never be performed with a fish out of water. It actually works way better fully submerged too.
It's interesting how many people have this same comment, so thanks for bringing this up. Honest question: If you've caught 1 fish on a fly on a given day, do you ever changes flies after that or are confident you've dialed in what they're eating and you're good with that to the point you never change flies or adjust anything (drift, size/color, location etc)?
@@FlyFishFood nope when I nymph I’m adjusting everything throughout the day. How many different fish do you pump per day? Is it just one? Is it every fish?
He does, but the beauty of it is that you took the time to comment to point that out and helped us bump our engagement that helps us make more videos where we talk about more fishing-related things. It's weird how that works but we definitely appreciate your efforts to keep us talking....
So cool to see people geek out at this level.

"There's a good chance that any fish you've caught is eating what you caught it with." -no idea.

Phenomenal video. This was crazy helpful.
Very informative, thanks!!
Great tutorial for sure I hope I can stop by your shop when I head to arizona
Excellent video again team FFF. U missed the most effective way to find out what bug to use. Snag lances line and see what he is tying on…

Where did you get your PhD from?
Midges are present all year long, can never go wrong with them in the winter
Great rising fish at 2:55
You guys are the best
someone get this poor nerd a tripod and gimbal.
What’s the chances of those C&F ENTOMOLOGY KITS coming back into stock?
Gonna be a month or two. But they are soooo nice. :)

Go to your local paint store and buy a 5 gallon elastic strainer.

I am sure that didn't wipe any slime off the fish. "Throat" pump? Looked like the pump went all the way to its a$$.
If you already had caught the fish then why sticking the tube into their stomach? Just keep catching more fish with the same fly and save time🤔

It's a throat pump, not a stomach pump.
Also, don’t pump fish’s stomachs. For f’ sake. Try changing flies if you aren’t catching fish. Or go home. You’ve had a great day regardless.
Good thing we were pumping the throat. :)
Maybe the fish are eating exactly what you caught the fish on. I know it’s a crazy theory but I think I might be onto something…
Great comment, I think this is the safest technique for determining what the fish are eating.
Also, forget the little bugs. Only throw giant streamers and get skunked like a man.
That is a popular technique employed by some of my friends for sure
