    There is a real story like a novel.
    The reason why judo lost a lot of skills is GHQ.
    After WW2 they banned Japanese martial arts, the purpose is to eliminate the Japanese spirit of Bushido, because the Japanese soldiers were too strong.
    Junzo Sasamori, a martial artist and politician who learned "Itto-ryu", explained to GHQ that "Japanese martial arts are a technique of peace" in order to revive the Japanese tradition of martial arts. .. But they didn't believe.
    "If it's the art of peace, fight our strongest man. We fight with a real bayonet. You fight with a bamboo sword."
    They intended to kill the other martial artist.
    Therefore, Mr. Sasamori asked Mr. Zenya Kunii, the 18th Soke of Kashima Shinryu, to protect all Japanese martial arts.
    The day of the match has come.
    Military personnel have real bayonets, and Mr. Kunii has a cloth-wrapped bamboo sword.
    The moment Mr. Kunii lightly dodged the bayonet, he put a bamboo sword on the opponent's neck and pressed it against the ground, so the soldiers could not move at all.
    The match ended in 0.5 seconds.
    Mr. Kunii won.
    ua-cam.com/video/Hrg9W-T-VAA/v-deo.html
    GHQ said, "Japanese martial arts are still dangerous, so ban them."
    But there is something interesting happening.
    The soldier is a man.
    Men are creatures who want to be strong in all ages and countries.
    This time, the soldiers began to appeal to their bosses to protect Japanese martial arts, saying, "I want to learn too."
    That is why Japanese martial arts still exist.
    However, the strong part was changed to weaken.
    For example, Judo.
    The Judo Federation survived by claiming that "judo is a sport, not a martial art" in order to survive.
    That's why Kosen judo, which was very strong, gradually disappeared.
    Mr. Mifune is using the technique of Kito style jujutsu.
    Currently, Kito-ryu Jiu-Jitsu is preserved as an old-fashioned type of judo, but only the shape remains, the theory is lost, and the movement becomes almost meaningless.
    I think it is the Kito style that should be studied.

    Wow! That canon of Judo has just about everything and anything you'd ever need for most practical applications. Once again, tons of ne waza .. BJJ before BJJ. His principles on riding the throw also allows an older weaker person to defend against a larger,faster, and younger opponent as well. This is the whole judo masters who feel like an empty gi vs a strong resistant partner. Something everyone should aspire too.

    The reason it's changed I believe is due to the IJF. Everyone is doing (Sport Judo), not the full (Self Defense Judo). If everyone is focused on points and winning medals in the sport version, then the whole school adjusts to that. They won't teach the full version. If Wrestling has three versions (Folk, Freestyle, and Greco/Roman), and swimming has like 8, fencing has three versions, I don't see why Judo is only one. It's stupid.
    With all due respect to Kano, he himself failed Judo. He should have let Kosen Judo flourish. He should have let a self defense complete version of Judo flourish. The Kodokan to this day are just figureheads. They don't actually have a large effect on Judo. The IJF, run by Europeans like that numbskull Neil Adams control Judo. It's a joke. Thank God Judoka went to Russia and Brazil so we had SAMBO and BJJ.

      @@Chadi Judo self defence is a thing ... it's just not taught often, or well.
      In part this is because it's hard to do safely in a competitive way - which Kano knew - and so he put much of it into the kata (which, of course, are barely practiced.)
      (I introduced some of the more senior students (I don't run the club) to the Tachiai part of Kime-no-kata last week. Their shock when I said 'and then you strike with mae-geri - kick with ball of the foot into their groin' was hilarious. But what was unfortunate is that none of them had even the basic awareness that atemi-waza exists. When I brought out the tanto and the bokken .. well.)
      Self defence judo is all there. We just don't do it.

    I used to wrestle for an hour straight with submissions, pins, sweeps. No strikes. Sometimes when id get stuck in a move we would learn the esacpe for it and teach each other. I know all my moves because of wrestling amd learning from the canon of judo. Side escapes were my challenge. But i got good at side mount counter sit up, its in the book. When somebodys got you in side controlyou push your hand into their neck , hold onto the other arm with the left arm, curl right leg up and use it to push away from his body, when you get the distance you push into his neck , twist and situp and youll be on top in side control. Also the shrimp kept me in a street fight for 10 mins. Then i finally sweep amd mount posture and punch , punch, and thenfall down with elbow and i see his eyes roll then the party kicked me in the face and surrounded me and tried to stomp me out. Im glad i know some judo enough that i win in fights all the time, i only fight if i have to. I try avoid at all but sometimes it happens.

    I think the reason that martial arts tend to water down and people stop training certain techniques is that those take longer and it is more challenging to develop the skills that come with those.
    They are beautiful and allow to overcome greater strength when applied at the right time but it requires smarter and longer drilling and people don’t take the time to develop themselves especially in a competition driven environment.

    some of these escapes where taught to me in kung fu to "counter" judokas. I always thought they were originally judo moves that my teacher learned or figured out. It's wierd that these aren't the bread and butter of escapes, i've used them in actual fights and they tend to work very well. specifically the seoi nage counter was what I was taught and was farelly simple to use if you can see it comming.
    (This doesnt mean that most other throws didn't made me become a temporary ragdoll. Not trying to say as if I couldn't be thrown, not a by a long shot, just strange that this isn't the standard of judo teachings. I've recently become more interested in Judo and as soon as the pandemic gets better I intend to enroll into a judo class. Peace to all and have a good one )

    3:40 On this point I would actually like to respectfully disagree. Turning like this in the air I think is perfectly fine and I even think should be lightly and gradually taught by an experienced coach after the athlete has had proper ukemi training and has several years of experience.
    Like you said Mifune and his students are doing very light randori, his students aren’t really trying to throw him with all their strength nor are they resisting his attacks with everything they have like they would be in a competition, such like today’s athletes in the IJF tour. In high level competitions “riding” a technique is just gonna result in the opponent changing direction or just throwing themselves makkikomi style, both of which will result you getting slammed even harder. The part of like hugging your opponent and redirecting him to the opposite side is fine and has been done plenty in competition but I think “riding” the technique in a competition won’t result in something that looks that smooth like it dose in the video. Also, yes you could say you end up in an disadvantaged position but you end up in worst positions when attempting sutemi waza or for example after a failed drop seoi nage. And are you really that bad? I mean this is a last resort to getting thrown for Ippon and 99% of judoka will end up in the lying face down or turtle position after a failed technique or whatever anyway. I think that this type of turning in the air is in principle pretty much what Mifune is doing just in a competitive context but looks different for the same reason that techniques look very different in uchikomi than in competition.
    Furthermore what better way to express the 柔(ju) than to use your opponent’s force, go with the throw(giving way), use their momentum to turn gracefully and dynamically in the air and land on your front (on the feet or otherwise) avoiding Ippon. I find an athlete escaping a seoi nage with a perfect one handed cartwheel is just as beautiful as him getting thrown for Ippon. I do agree that it might look a little crazy and dangerous but then again this is an art based on lifting a person over you and slamming him on the ground on their back. Also there have been many more “dangerous” moves done throughout the history of judo and people like Zantaraia who I think is one of the main judoka to popularize this was doing it for years and there are lots videos of people doing it to this day and landing on their feet, so I do think that there is a safer way to do it although it’s inevitable that sometimes you’ll end up on your knees or stomach.
    Lastly I also agree that doing this in self defense or basically anywhere where there isn’t a padded mat under your feet is wrong and will get you hurt, but then again we weren’t talking of the self defense aspect of judo and that clip wasn’t taken from the street is was taken from a “SPORT” competition with modern judo rules.
    I am an athlete and this type of turning personally has saved me from a lot of ippons. Judo has a lot of aspects to it and the sport aspect in my opinion is ever evolving and this type of turning in the air that has been seen more and more over the years, again in my opinion if taught correctly and safely I would dare to say could become an integral part of “sport judo”.
    I would like to hear your thoughts on my opinion

    • @fromsamuraitoscience7184
      @fromsamuraitoscience7184 2 роки тому

      I will guess that learning the principles of Mifune's defence likely has many benefits, but very unlikely to work against an Olympic level judoka, the amount of rotational forces they generate with throws are likely too large to just "ride" the throw. They also control you well and follow through all the way to the ground. Techniques also "changed" slightly, for example in Harai goshi the competition variation is not just like the traditional Kata version, there is often a lot more force applied to make the opponent fall more to your side.

    Hi Chadi, if you look at judo research related to the big IJF tournaments you will see that for years Yoko shiho gatame was the technique used most often to win fights (might still be?), instead of a throwing technique like we all tend to think. I probably know most judo and bjj escapes from that hold and similar side control positions. At an IJF coaching course someone who is good at Yoko shiho gatame (my weight, 6th dan) held me in yokoshiho to see if I could escape, there is no way I will escape in 20 seconds from a well executed one, imagine if a world class judoka holds you there when already tired. The only way for someine to find out what works is to find someone good, let them hold you properly and see if your escapes work.

      @@Chadi I have no idea, at the time I was completely ignorant of Mifune's Judo and just thought that must be the way it is, thinking about it now it was when I was a low grade, and I jumped out of a throw by one of the brown/black belts (it came completely naturally to me) so might have something to do with that.
      You know how different schools can be.

    I'm amazed. People says Ueishiba is fake but nobody says Mifune is fake. Even Joe Rogan is saying Mifune is legit.

    • @Chadi

      Ueshiba i believe had a different approach, Mifune was doing kakari geiko (light technical sparring) and demonstrating Ura waza. Ueshiba went through many things on his journey and is trying to demonstrating his beliefs and skills through these, so studying these men and their background. I don't believe there's anything fake, we simply need to understand these men.

    Every time i see mifune videos i have the same doubt. It seems to me that in that time every technique had to be with correct form, so you dont see many throws doing a roll with your oponent, like koga´s style seoi nage. When mifune did randori, no body did a full roll with him on the back trying to get the ippon as nowdays.
    Cheers from Chile!

    • @Chadi
      @Chadi  3 роки тому +3

      Kakari geiko is about being as fluent as possible and not really forcing anything, if i can't get the throw i drop it, and if i can't defend it i take the fall.

    • @floatingjudo2568
      @floatingjudo2568 3 роки тому +2

      Its also about the self defense value of Judo. Throwing by doing a roll with your opponent exposes you to chocks/newaza attacks should the throw not be successful.

    • @ignaciovaldes2390
      @ignaciovaldes2390 3 роки тому

      Do you think that nowadays judo is more harder or explosive than mifune time? Even a similar strategy to avoid the throw like the one do it by chang ling or zantaraia in his prime is way more explosive and faster in this time.

    • @floatingjudo2568
      @floatingjudo2568 3 роки тому +1

      It is hard to say if it is more explosive today. We lack footage from the past to compare.
      If you see the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, I would say the Japanese competitors back then were already explosive, probably as much as today.
      Explosiveness is probably also dependant on how Judo was played back then, probably with more self defense consideration than the athletic setting today which allow it to look more explosive.

      @@floatingjudo2568 good point. the lack of historical videos is a big issue. now that i think of it, the mifune´s video is a randori practice, maybe in that time comeptitions the combat were more explosive and very different, who knows. Thanks!

    I'm...I'm going to say 'blessed' (because, inside, I feel it's fear based and nothing else, making me somewhat of a coward) with yhr natural ability to do things similar [SIMILAR] to this but without any training. I'm not skilled and I think it's really luck....but I've had some interesting incidents where I was scared to death to be hurt and ended up being lifted, basically riding the lift, sandbaging the person, then somehow [again, not skill or talent, luck...so I can't explain what I did without sounding like even more of an idiot] reversed the position and ended up taking the other person down, usually far too hard to be considered anything but reckless (again, I was scared).
    as one example of many: there is a 'game' in prison and jail that I didn't know about called dumping or the dumping game. simply put, it's coming up behind an unsuspecting person and doing a suplex type shoulder throw (see? uneducated idiot, like I said I would sound like 😅). apparently, this is common. I didn't know this....
    ....so, I mess up, end up in what I assumed was the TV 'drunk tank' and...nope. Jail, being called a terrorist by the state. I get things cleared up, charges dropped as it was all a misunderstanding and a mistake on my part [which I take full responsibility of]....
    ...but a neighbor of mine, who has done serious time, decides I haven't made it into his 'elite criminal group', comes from behind, hands around my waist, and goes to dump me.
    .....luck. somehow, with Lady luck, I escaped the surprise behind attack (I've never been a wrestler or a fighter), get it reversed and fond myself on the way to the ground with all my weight on my elbow....which is on his Adam's apple. 🤦‍♂️😬
    I mean, I know why it happened.....I'm super short, so trying to take my waist is hard if you're taller than me...I widen my stance, put all my weight on dude's hands (head if it's a frontal takedown), put my right foot behind his left foot, warned him to stop, he turned and I swept his feet, which made us land head facing head. there were rocks and I have a bad back and neck. getting hurt....scary! I have kids, man.....so, I just chose to land on him.
    its not an "I black out when I get angry, then I don't know what damage I did" type of thing....its more of a 'who taught me that' kind of deal. 🤷‍♂️
    note: anybody with skill, including an first year judo young lady....could beat the life out of me, I'm sure. I'm not a tough guy at all.

    Do you think if Kano had invented judo in the modern day, seeing the different training methods (and safety practices) used by martial arts around the world, that judo would look very different?

    Hmm. I watch a little bit of WWE and I see that the submission holds are very "ugly" (they are), and Judo seem very "clean", very controlled. I did not know that the "ugly" stuffs were part of Judo. Very educational.
