  • Lenny Breau met Don Francks in 1962 when Lenny was living in Toronto and attempting to get his career off the ground with the help of his manager, George Sukornyk. Lenny and Don gelled instantly, so much so that Lenny turned down an invitation from Tony Bennet to play and travel with his band in order to work with Don. At the time, Don was a virtually unknown singer and actor but Lenny was drawn to his free-spirited creativity and affinity for the unconventional and original.
The pair hired bassist Eon Henstridge and formed the group 'three'. The band played several gigs in Ontario and Quebec before moving to New York City where they played at the Blue Angel club, did a spot on the Jackie Gleason Show and recorded an album at the Village Vanguard. Shortly after these and other gigs, Francks left the band to take a role in a Broadway play and went on to a successful acting career.
Lenny returned to Winnipeg where he became an in demand studio musician and worked in clubs around town with the original Lenny Breau Trio (Reg Keln on drums & Ron Halldorson on bass) But although he and Don were working in different locales and artistic fields, the pair kept in touch and when Lenny moved back to Toronto in 1966 with his romantic and professional partner Judi Singh, they reunited and did a handful of gigs around the city.
One of these was an appearance on the CBC TV show 'In Person', airing on March 16th, 1968. After an introduction by host by Alan Hamel, Lenny improvised behind Don as he read an original poem from his famous "Black Book", a collection of his thoughts, ideas, poetry and prose.
After this segment, Lenny backed Dinah Christie, a well-known Canadian singer/actor, on the Beatles' tune 'Here, There and Everywhere'. (Lenny would later have a romantic relationship with Dinah's younger sister, Cedar)
The spot concluded with Lenny, Don and Dinah doing a rendition of 'What the World Needs Now'. We've cut this track short because the Jimmy Dale Orchestra comes in for the second verse and Lenny's playing is not audible for the remainder of the song.
Don and Lenny remained close friends until Lenny's death in 1984. Don passed away in 2016. His daughter, musician Cree Summer, recorded a rendition of the poem Don read on 'In Person' with a very different musical setting.

Lenny's playing always stops me in my tracks whenever I hear him. No one comes close to what he achieved on the guitar, in my humble opinion ❤
