  • This performance was recorded at one of Lenny Breau's many gigs at Mississippi Whiskers, a Nashville club where Lenny performed regularly during his years in the Music City. The precise date of this gig is unknown but it was almost certainly sometime in 1977.
The piece Lenny plays here is 'Taranta', a flamenco/jazz hybrid tune that he recorded on his first album 'Guitar Sounds From Lenny Breau' in 1968. Lenny performed this tune often on gigs but while he used a consistent form that included a section taken from the Miles Davis tune 'Milestones, he improvised on this form and no two performances of the piece were the same. This one includes, among other things, an extended section of harmonics and a few quotes from the McCoy Tyner tune "Vision" aka "Visions".
The photo accompanying the track was taken by a unknown photographer at Mississippi Whiskers probably in 1977.
    1. Taranta (aka Toronto)

Nice hear him live on a good night. I recognized a lot of his pieces in this medoly. Like, Paris & I Love You from Last Sessions and Visions from 5 o'clock Bells. Wish there were more cameras back then. Thanks for posting.

Almost too exhausting to experience...an unearthly genius. If he is a "guitar player", what do you call the rest of us mortal beings who own guitars??

Superb. A monster virtuoso of so many genres even the blending of them. Thank you.

I love hearing Lenny speak about other artists. There is that little snippet in the Tal Farlow and Lenny footage where Lenny mentions "this new kid Jimi Hendrix" to Tal, then the footage edits away. It would be cool to know what Tal and Lenny thought about Jimi's playing, i guess.

It is hard to believe that he had only a thumb and three fingers to pick all those notes, and only four fingers to fret them. makes my hands hurt just to listen. Back to the woodshed...

I think Lenny used all his picking fingers. I'm pretty sure some of his comp/lead passages would not be possible without the pinky. You can see in some photos and footage, he kept all his picking fingernails long, for the clear picking tone. I think the "Don't Think Twice" footage shows his nails, and his five finger picking.

Yes, absolutely, he uses pinky on some of the double harmonics and cascade harmonics.

@@alabudzki74 There was one video passage where Liona Boyd (Love that lady!) asked Lenny if he used his pinky to pick notes, and he told her (at that time) he did not. He might have mulled over the idea, and learned to use that pinky...

@@johngordy8071 I saw some videos in which he uses pinky for cascading. It makes the sound cleaner because you are farther from the source. I think he explained it also in one of the videos. If I find it, I will let you know.
