  • Like many others, I have watched the Jordan Peterson phenomenon unfold with a certain fascination. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you don’t spend a lot of time on social media, for Peterson, a mild-mannered psychology professor from the University of Toronto, has emerged as one of the hottest personalities on the internet.

I spent years as an atheist, before hearing Jordan peterson talk and accepting the cultural christianity that built my world. Now, after watching his biblical lectures, I'm ready to take my family back to my childhood church.
The Lord works in mysterious ways, right?
Update 2022: wow, this was back at the very beginning of my journey to salvation. I have since come to understand that Christianity is more than a cultural thing. I accepted Christ as my savior as well as my cultural foundation. I have seen him at work in my own life, and he guides me now as I am attending a Christian college to become a clinical counselor.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. - 1 Timothy 2:1-4

I was an Evangelical Protestant and I was honestly bored with Christianity, but Jordan Peterson made me look at my own faith with fresh eyes. He made me see another layer of truth in the Bible that I had never imagined was there. I started reading Dostoevsky at his recommendation, which got me interested in Orthodox Christianity. Learning about Orthodox Christianity got me tremendously interested in Catholicism, and now I intend to start going to mass and RCIA and become a Catholic.

I’m curious why you were atheist in from the start? I️ would say I’m atheist I️ suppose and have religiously watched Jordan Peterson’s videos for almost a year. Peterson seems to use Christian theology to help explain what he sees in the world. But when you put a Christian on stage to talk with him. Peterson really stands out from being Christian. Someone could respond and tell me what they think on this, it looks like he takes the best rational atheist objective view of the world and combines it with the great poems/stories of the Christian religious text then uses them to try and explain what we all see in the world individually. But he doesn’t use the Bible as historical fact like this bishop started to say.

If I may suggest, refer to the Coptic Bible (Alexandria version) for ancient testament. It is a direct translation from the Torah and for this reason more historically accurate.
Just as an example, there was no parting of the Red Sea by Moses but the crossing of marshes named the Sea of Reeds. The circumstances of the exodus from Egypt have historical roots with circumstances including politics and religion which were lost in the Jerusalem Bible which went through a series of translation from Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin then, in its first vernacular tongue, in German; the Gutenberg Bible.
The Old Testament is a story based on historical facts. There is much wider scope when taking in history and see how events unfolded. It makes the experience more enriching. Faith and reason can go hand in hand and if one accepts this, exploring the old testament closer to the sources will be more gratifying in terms of knowledge.

Tony Smith- why don’t you enlighten the world. I assume you’re Protestant or evangelical of some sort. If it wasn’t for Catholicism maintaining and shaping itself very early on after Christ was crucified and establishing itself throughout the world you wouldn’t be able to live your faith as a Christian. The mere bible that you posses comes from the Pope Damasus gathering up all the letters and adding then looking over them and adding them to the Bible. If you don’t trust Catholicism then maybe you shouldn’t trust the Bible as well, since the New Testament was placed in by the church and presenting it to the world as the word of God.

Look up Dealt, a video documentary about Richard Turner , one of the world's top card manipulators (he dislikes being called a magician). I know it might seem strange to refer to a card cheat in a discussion on religion, but Turner is remarkable. He can do some things with a deck of cards that no one else in the world can do and is a 5th degree black belt. But most amazing is that he is legally blind, he can't see the cards or the opponent attacking him. He learns to do things with repetition and perfect practice. I thought of him because he says people's two biggest problems are laziness and procrastination. You can view his MIT appearance on UA-cam.

I can’t believe I didn’t notice this video by His Excellency before!
Peterson’s lectures were the primary catalyst which led me to become Catholic.
I was in an intensely dark state of atheistic nihilism when I first encountered Peterson. I first watched his biblical series with the intention of criticizing it. But after listening to him making a case for the wisdom of the Christian narrative, I eventually, in a moment of desperation, reached out internally towards what Peterson calls the “Transcendent”... and what I found there was our Mother the Blessed Virgin Mary. She opened her arms to me, asked for my total surrender, and then carried me into union with her son, the Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Now I know a joy and lightness which I couldn’t have dreamed of before I encountered the living God and his Mother. Ave Maria and Dominus Vobiscum!

I think he's trying to deliver the wisdom from the bible but avoids making onthological claims since his not a theologian and also because it would drive away many atheist. I was in a state of deep depression when I first met a Dr. Jordan Peterson video. I got instantly connected to the message and since then i started my journey of "cleaning my room" and "save my father from the belly of the whale".
It's not an easy task, being 43 years old and had to reavaliate your whole life, lived into the chaos. But its been an intense, positive and meaningfulll one.
I didn't kwow what FAITH means or how to express it in my life and this by itself took me out of medication. Its incredible when we realize that we can get sick just by denying our spiritual nature.

If you dont know what you are fighting you will be digging out of that hole again.

having listened and read both Sam Harris and Feser quite a bit, I really do not think Sam Harris would agree to a debate/talk with Feser.
Sam Harris' arguments would have no affect on Feser.
Sam would lose, and badly, depending on the subject matter ofcourse.
the reason is that most of Sams arguments "effectiveness" depends on strawmen (bringing up the Bible, YEC, dinosaurs, 9/11, Muslims, which religion, which god etc...), which simply would have no affect on Feser as Feser approaches it purely from a metaphysical/philosophical/natural theology perspective.
I think Sam would do ALOT worse against Feser than he did against WLC.
WLC still allows to feed the atheist troll within Harris, whereas with Feser, Harris would not have that same privilege.
having said that, Harris is sharp and would manage to raise a few good arguments - which I'm sure Feser is already familiar with.
I don't think that debate is worth it, I would rather see Feser with Peterson because Peterson is a bit more reasonable. Sams position is simply pure scientism/physicalism.

Campbell was actually the very first thing I thought of when I first saw one of Peterson's lectures, probably shortly after his declaration against compelled speech (gender pronouns). Having seen the Jung references in Campbell's videos previously, it didn't interest me any further. It was only some time later that I saw Peterson's lectures on personality that went into the 5 most important personality qualities and how they're measured. THAT I found VERY interesting.

Peterson also stated that he does not want to dispense with the metaphysical, and in some sense this makes him more than a Gnostic of history. He also describes Christ as the ultimate hero, as a person who knowingly accepted his fate to die on the cross for our salvation - therefore becoming a hero above/beyond all heroes (a meta hero). I'd give an Amen to that!

I found your channel through this video. I started to become curious about Christianity through Peterson's biblical lectures. It's difficult to express exactly why I find his videos and yours so fascinating. I saw a comment which touched on your ability to speak scholarly on the bible, but also to tie it into popular culture and current events. I think this is the best explanation I've found which can explain my sudden fascination with Christianity. I don't think it's insignificant. I think people are discouraged by the radical deconstruction of our culture today. Those who see the chaos but lack discipline or guidance fall into a nihilistic pit in the absence of a culture to lean on. I think Christianity is seen as the last stronghold of the morals and values which previously constituted our culture (as watered down and distorted as they were in that position). Peterson weighs in heavily on the deconstruction of western culture, while simultaneously serving to bridge the gap between culture and Christianity by analyzing both in the common domain of psychology. What the West has is worth preserving, but generation upon generation of political and religious apathy have resulted in the weakening of the minds tasked with upholding it. In its weakened state, it's become ripe for replacement by a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Jesus said that society would break down and things would get worse and even more dangerous. It was expected. Religion failed to stop this, so I wouldn't say the breakdown of religion had anything to do with society being better. Society has been vehemently against the things of God from day one and that hasn't changed over the centuries.. The problem is peoples lake of understanding about what following after God actually involves.

One other rule that resonated with me, that is not mentioned here is to: "Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient". Having purpose, goals and dreams, as well as responding to our instincts is essential for both our personal and spiritual growth.

I wasn't addressing about poverty or social issues as what the modern liberal church likes to do. I was speaking about moral issues the same as Jordan Peterson does. He does it with a pasion I just don't see from the pulpit and you can tell by the huge following that he is getting that he is hitting the spot that church has abandoned. Example: I very seldom hear any preacher these days teach on the 10 commandments which is central to our faith, or challange people out their lives in regard to sin. The popular message these days is grace and God will sort out the rest. "Huge cop out!

Thanks a lot, O Bishop, My Bishop. As always, enlighting and delightful. You put some words to the hesitance I have with Dr. Jordan Peterson. I Saw the Patrick Coffin interview with Dr. J.P. and I think that his problem is that He is a very, very smart person, and He is trying to acquire a bit of faith through reasoning alone. And faith is a Gift, not a duty. In my point of view, he needs to read "Captivated by Joy", by Lewis, without his psychology lenses, and just a little pray wouldn't hurt...

Not really. Sola fide comes directly from Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast"...seems Scriptury to me.

    • @TomLandry1
      @TomLandry1 6 років тому +6

Andrew - Respectfully, though Luther was perhaps not "strictly" Gnostic by the theological definition, in practice his approach was hardly discern-able from Gnosticism.
Central to the new religion Luther invented in the 16th Century was his personal claim that, among all the peoples and institutions on earth, HE (Luther) ALONE possessed the special ability (secret knowledge, if you will) to correctly "interpret" the Bible; or stated in Gnostic terms - to discern and teach the "secret knowledge" contained in the Bible but somehow "hidden" from the Apostles and their successors for some 15 centuries. (and thereby implicitly asserting that he was a prophet).
Also central to Luther's new religion was his absolute prohibition on "private" Bible interpretation by ANYONE other than himself, and his ardently held belief that ANYONE outside his new, perfected religion was doomed to hell.
These days, Protest-ants typically are NOT taught any of this, yet it's all there in Luther's writings. Instead, Protest-ants are offered a Highly SANITIZED version of Luther.
Interestingly, and paradoxically, these views were completely shared, or perhaps I should say echoed, by the other "great" (sic) reformer, John Calvin: Calvin also believed that he (Calvin) alone, among all the people of earth, possessed the "secret knowledge" to correctly "interpret" the Bible, that private interpretation of the Bible by ANYONE else must be expressly forbidden, and that anyone outside HIS (Calvin's) version of the new and perfected religion was doomed to hell.
      Funny, huh?
      God Bless You!

    • @TomLandry1
      @TomLandry1 6 років тому +4

Andrew - Re. your comments re Ephesians 2:8-9. Respectfully, these verses actually do not support the man-made doctrine of Sola Fide, IF we take the passage in context and accept the meaning Saint Paul attached to it.
Saint Paul was writing to refute the contention of the Jews of the First Century that they were saved by works under the Mosaic Law. When you read all of Saint Paul's letters you see that this was a consistent message. Salvation is not from works under the Mosaic Law. On this we all agree.
The Church does not (and never has) taught that salvation is from works of ANY kind, but rather that Salvation is an unmerited, unearned, and un-earn-able gift from God. (so far, so good, right?)
Where Luther erred was his insistence that Faith is merely mental ascent (believe 'in your heart"). In support of this innovation, Luther even preached that Christians SHOULD sin, and should "Sin Boldly". Christ taught just the opposite, and we see this pretty clearly in the Bible.
The Catholic Church teaches what Christ taught, that salvation is only from God's Grace, but that faith means more than mere mental ascent, it also includes love and charity. And thus, in love and charity, Christ wants us to cooperate in God's Grace by the way we conduct our lives.
This is NOT the same as "works-based-salvation", is is often claimed. But it is quite different than the view of many Protest-ant sects that Salvation is simply a legal transaction - check the box (say a sinner's prayer, respond to an altar call, etc.) and go to heaven, regardless of how we live the rest of our lives. Christ didn't teach this. Saint Paul didn't teach this.
      God Bless You!

I'm an admirer of Jordan Peterson. I feel the same way about Bishop Barron. They both breathe new life into our heritage of faith. Both men seem intellectually worthy of the profoundly daunting task of salvaging the mission of the West, and, more importantly, reinvigorating it's foundational faith for a distracted culture. I'm not Catholic, and I'm not an academic, but I can see the importance of these two perspectives coming together. It's a reconciliation of sorts.

the way Peterson's "hero archetype" was presented here kinda reminds me of the Man for All Seasons, himself, St. Thomas More--house put well in order, in terms of his principles, and he stood firm against the chaos of the English Reformation (and, of course, he could have otherwise settled for the "appearance" of peace and order [eg, comfort, prestige, etc], simply by violating his principles & taking Henry's oaths).

    • @wayneanddonita3857
      @wayneanddonita3857 6 років тому +5

yes, I first found out about St. Thomas More when studying the Reformation as a Protestant. I saw him as the "bad guy" who opposed my hero, William Tyndale. I thought the only reason he opposed the king's remarriage & oath of supremacy, even unto death, was that, after spending all those years criticizing (and even killing) Protestants, he'd lose his "standing among men" if he flip-flopped, or that he was trying to work his way into God's favor through his "relatively easy" martyrdom (beheading, as opposed to drawing & quartering, burning at the stake, etc). But...that was a very simplistic view of a major historical event. anywho, my views have since changed.

He is definitely searching for the truth and hopefully he will find it some day through his intellect. I think he is a well-meant man with strong principles but there is still a road ahead for him. Tony Judt used to say that young people nowadays are lacking in intellectual leaders. I applaud the fact that Peterson is actually one of those intellectual leaders and that he has helped many youngsters (especially MEN) to appreciate themselves more and to find themselves worthy of existing in a time of extreme Feminism.

The Jungian archetypal approach to the Biblical texts is compelling, and the Christian historical approach to the Gospels is also compelling. Put them together and you've got a fresh and convincing proclamation of Christ as the fulfilment of humanity's deepest unconscious desires. Peterson's work with the Biblical texts has the potential to act as a powerful "praeparatio evangelii".

The "problem" with Jordan Peterson is that he's just presenting his perspective as an individualist, and that this perspective is spun again into identity politics. People that attach themselves to a "Team-Peterson" collective don't understand what it is they think they're supporting. Likewise, those against him see his perspective only as a new threat of some new collective against their own. There's no forgiveness for that perceived identity, so you can never get past it to discover anything about any one such labeled individual. That's ultimately what he is against, but those that cling to collectivism will never see beyond their perspective to realize this. I do think that Peterson is guilty of riling up the us vs. them storyline, however. It's certainly great for sales and notoriety. He's a master of this game.

One major caveat I would like to make in Bishop Barron's comparison of Peterson to Campbell and Jung is that Peterson is despised and hated by many. He almost lost his job as Professor.
He is also hated by the New Atheists because he has argued powerfully that religion is necessary for human flourishing. Science without religion is incapable of this great endeavor.
He is also hated by the Post Modernists and Marxists because he exposes the totalitarian bent of political correctness.
There is no doubt that this man is carrying a great burden. In one recent interview, he was crying because of the letters he receives from people who state that Peterson has literally saved their lives and at the same time, he has been and is still vilified by many in and outside of government, on the Internet etc.
He needs to be prayed for.
Father Barron is right in his criticism of the denial of the historical. But considering the great pressure he is under and hate that he receives, one can give him the benefit of the doubt.
And I would argue, that his own quest for truth under levels of persecution will lead him to the full truth.
    God bless

Michael S I haven’t heard Peterson deny Christianity and it’s historical truth claims. Neither Campbell nor Jung lived in a world of fractured identity politics. Today if you dont toe the line, use the right phrase then you are the enemy. And today's leftists unlike the liberals of my generation do not respect the rights of others to think for themselves. Personally if I got near a colkemge campus these days I wnould have ten groups hating me in ten minutes because I would expect them to act grown up.

    • @LesIsMoreFilms
      @LesIsMoreFilms 6 років тому +2

Marcel if he's hasn't denied hell then he at least has tried to pull people's minds away from the reality of hell. He also said if he was given the power he wouldn't remove the legality of gay marriage from America. He has also has tried to bring his flock to appreciate Martin Luther by calling him "a mystic of grace"...Martin Luther - a soul that was so anti-Christ he makes satanists jealous that they cant reach his level of evil. These are just *some* of the *public* rotten things Bishop Barron has done.
I think you're good to try to defend a bishop. But at the end of the day when we see the sad reality that we have a wolf in sheep's clothing we must warn people and pray for his conversion.

I've enjoyed almost anything I've seen of Jordan Peterson. Great stuff. The question is how to apply those lessons to what's going wrong in the Catholic Church. Maybe young men need less Beatitudes and more 10 Commandments. Less social work and more stories like St George and his Dragon, and of course, Christ Himself. There's a lesson in here for those trying to reach young men with the faith. And I'm pretty sure we're not listening. :(

Peterson gives an excellent talk on Logos to a mostly Eastern Orthodox crowd. There are two other speakers (one an Orthodox carver, the other a priest).
Search “Jordan Peterson Logos Pageau”. A couple hours well worth your time, whoever is reading this.

LittleBox87 Yeah; there are other appearances with Pageau as well, and I’ve seen other talks from JBP that underscore what I would consider very compatible with Orthodoxy.
I’ve been on a bit of a binge since posting this previous comment and have noticed Peterson’s views evolving (or perhaps clarifying?) in the last year or so. Nothing overt, but I’m curious if anyone else has noticed it.

I am expecting those 12 videos to expand on Jordan Peterson :) But really, would be interesting to comment more on him through various angles. In terms of your last point about historicity, another Christian commentator of Jordan Peterson, Paul Vanderklay (would recommend checking out his commentary! e.g. ua-cam.com/video/K40g6yuI-Ps/v-deo.html) finds many parallels between Jordan Peterson and C.S. Lewis. And Pastor Paul shows this very convincingly. C.S. Lewis was also very interested in myths and was led to conversion through conversations with J.R.R Tolkien (also interested in myth), and who challenged C.S. Lewis to see Christianity as the "true myth" (true in the historical/actually happened sense). Peterson doesn't simply say that he see's Biblical stories as purely archetypal, well at least not the story of Christ, and is open to it potentially being the "true myth" in this sense. He is much more ambivalent about this, so he's not simply applying Jungian analysis to the resurrection story but he is also not where C.S. Lewis/J.R.R. Tolkien was in accepting it as the true myth. He's somewhere in the middle.
Anyway, glad you made this video. Hope there's more dialogue on several of the points Peterson brings up as his rise indicates these are some of the crucial ideas/tensions that are animating are individuals and society (politically, spiritually, etc.)

Hi Bishop Barren! I listened to your interview with Peterson then looked up some of your videos and am now watching this one. Your issue with Campbell and Peterson's lack of signifying to the historical reference in the biblical text IS one of the main reasons why they appeal to so many people. We have gained too much knowledge and multiple ways of seeing the Universe and our place in it. If Nietzsche claimed God is dead, I will claim literalism is dead. It does not matter if Jesus actually rose from the dead or if certain events actually happened. They are in the past and are nought. The message, the logos of the message as it applies to the living awareness and spirit in each of us, is alive. Only two things can reach people. The readiness within to receive the message and watching the examples of others who are already possessed by it.

8:25 "Before we reform society, first reform yourself." Isn't that the premise of Jesus' pre-condition for the Kingdom of God? Transform the individual. Transform society. Society is a reflection of the sum-total of its individuals. If the individual is in chaos (radical selfishness resulting in personal interior chaos, emptiness, and hopelessness), then our own nation out to the world is in the same state. Christ is our only hope. The Jungian idea of archetype is merely the discovery of what God has planted within each of us in order to seek and find Him.

wrong theology. What you have written would suggest that peace can be achieved globally if everyone adopted this thinking. You are not transforming any society, it is against how God has set things up.

Bishop, might I make a request? I am a 19 year old missionary from Australia currently in Papua New Guinea. You're the only decent, Catholic, English speaking theologian I can find on the Internet. Is it possible for you to do a commentary on the Gospel of each Sunday? You have done some, like the woman at the well, which was fantastic in its richness and brevity. Usually I use Fr. Raymond Brown since he's was a genius, but his books are so expensive, and his commentaries are so long it's hard to pinpoint when he speaks about each gospel. Each week we do a 30 minute radio programme here and I do a short commentary of the Gospel on that Sunday. I don't want to give the same cheap catechesis each week and want to give something kerygmatic but also theologically sound. If you could help me out I'd appreciate! Too many commentaries out there are Protestant, useless! And the others that are good I've found are Italian, which I understand maybe one out of three words! Peace be with you Bishop, and regardless of whether you see this or not, thank you for what you have been doing, I listen to your talk on the 7 deadly sins very often and have given it in parts to others at particular moments.
