      Heyman is a fool. Watch the match, if you are impressed, then you'll wantto tune in next time. It's sad that wrestling has got to a stage where the drame outside the ring is more important. No wonder why the wrestling is below avergae for the most part.

      @@RagingUtaiYou're the fool. Wrestling is a TV show just like any other. The story and characters matter just like any other show. If you aren't invested in the plot and characters then you have no reason to see the fights. It's no different than anime or any other media. You watch to find out what will happen. Just random fighting will become boring fast. Why were people invested in Goku vs Frieza? Because Frieza murdered millions and wants to destroy the last of Goku's race. People watched to see Goku finally take him down and avenge the universe. Why did people watch Avengers Infinity War? Because the main villain that has been orchestrating almost everything since the beginning has finally come to alter everyone's life as they know it. REASON is the key word here. Without reason, there is no substance. The greatest matches of all time were all linked to stories. Undertaker vs HBK. Undertaker vs Kane. Batista vs Triple H. John Cena vs JBL. This is one of the reasons why AEW is failing. They just throw random matches together. You are the one who doesn't understand how wrestling works.

      Not true. You can learn a lot about someone from how they present themeselves and thier actions in the ring. Guts, determination, etc, there are times where the wrestling match tells a story and is just a joy to watch. When you have 2 great wrestlers in the ring, you don't need a story to make magic happen.
      Look at for example bret vs stone cold at wrestlemania, I can't even remember the story leading up to the match, but everyone remembers the match itself and how epic it was.

      @RagingUtai That is still story telling.
      None of these current "top guys" understand that aspect of wrestling. They do shit that they think will look cool for the sake of doing it. It doesn't progress the story and beyond a quick pop and maybe some highlight reels, it doesn't make what they're doing memorable.
      Jeff Hardy vs Undertaker in an 11 minute match on Raw 20 years ago is more memorable than anything I've seen Ospreay, Omega or the Bucks do because they told a compelling but simple story. In just 11 minutes Undertaker put Jeff over as a star and Jeff didn't even win. That's how wrestling should be.

And comparing movies in theaters to professional wrestling which are live events, is foolish. If people wanna see the finish to a feud then they buy the PPV. The reason why most of the territories failed is because they were trying to present a fantasy product as a legitimate-sport long after the curtain was pulled back to reveal that the Great Oz was just a quirky old man. Once people knew wrestling had predetermined outcomes and not a legit pro-sports competition, you needed to transition out of that mind-set and into the mindset of what you actually are.
    A show.
    You are competing with weekly TV shows. You are competing with daily soap-operas. You are competing with motion-pictures. You are competing even with cartoons and anime, and these days you are competing with shows on streaming networks.
    Those avenues of entertainment are all driven by one thing.
    A story.
    Without that, you have nothing. If Disney had just released *_Avengers: Infinity War_* in 2008 as their first MCU movie, it still would have been cool to watch in and of itself because seeing so many characters in the MCU on screen at the same time under ANY circumstance is amazing, however, it would not have been as legendary as it was or carried any real emotional resonance because we wouldn't have had any emotional connection to the characters involved to where we would _care_ about what is happening. The reason why the Thanos "snap" carried so much weight, is because of the rapport we had build up over a decade with all the MCU characters involved.
    This is why WWE is LEAGUES above AEW. Last year's Wrestlemania was basically *_Avengers: Infinity War._* This year's Wrestlemania was like *_Avengers: Endgame._*
    You told a story for 4 years. You built up equity in all the players involved. They were so cold-blooded with it that whether it was surreptitiously or accidentally done, they even used AEW to carry the story-line and had the big pay-off in THEIR ring at THEIR biggest event.
    I'm sure that someone in AEW has told Tony Khan these things, but he is a victim of his own ego.

    • @EvilChiId
      @EvilChiId 4 місяці тому

      No, the territories failed because Vince McMahon either bought them out & shut them down, or offered their star attractions more to exclusively work through him. That's literally why the territories are gone.

    • @D2Kprime
      @D2Kprime 4 місяці тому

      @@EvilChiId No, it's exactly what I said it was. The reason why Vince McMahon was able to buy those territories is because they didn't change with the times. If you aren't making money, you are losing money, and if you are losing money, you go out of business or get bought out.
      Jim Crockett Promotions was bought out by Ted Turner and because he felt a loyalty to pro wrestling for helping him build the TBS network, and did want to see them perish or get gobbled up by McMahon. So, he committed to investing in it despite it hemorrhaging money every year and Turner execs pleading for him to get rid of it.
      It wasn't until Eric Bischoff took over, changed WCW and modernized it that it started making a profit, and for 83 weeks it stomped the WWF nearly putting it out of business. That ONLY HAPPENED because Eric Bischoff understood what the core demographic was at the time and changed WCW to fit that dynamic (age 18-34.) That's where all of entertainment was during that time.
      Meanwhile the WWF was stuck in the same business model from the 1980s and that was not what fans wanted anymore, so, that caused a massive drop in PPV buyrates, tickets sales, and merchandise sales.
      JUST LIKE THE TERRITORIES IN THE 80s.
      They were reduced to holding weekly house shows and weekend shows like Superstars and Wrestling Challenge in high school gyms. This is the same company that at it's peak legitimately put 93,173 people in the Pontiac Silverdome (yes, it is a legit number.)
      When you don't change with the times, you get left behind. If Mid South, WCCW, AWA, Jim Crockett Promotions, Memphis, Stampede, etc. had all adapted the same strategy of changing with the times, Vince would never have been able to buy ANY of them out. They wouldn't have been AS successful as the WWF, but they would have been successful enough to survive just like indie feds flourish and succeed today.
      Nice try. My point stands.

  • @ChainedPhantom
    @ChainedPhantom 4 місяці тому +7

    It's funny as hell sitting and listening to 83 Weeks, and realizing after 30 years that myself and Eric Bischoff share similar opinions of professional wrestling, even when it comes to his explanations of why things happened the way they did and things were done the way that they were in WCW. In the case of promos being more important than matches, you don't really need to look any further than many of the most successful names in professional wrestling history. Hulk Hogan, John Cena, Bill Goldberg and even Steve Austin and the Rock weren't exactly the level of a Dean Malenko or Chris Benoit between the ropes. By and large, your average, mainstream professional wrestling fan doesn't tune into a wrestling show and worry about the work rate of the two guys in the ring or how many high spots they can hit. It's great if your guys CAN perform at a high level in the ring, but it's not necessarily a prerequisite for being a main event top guy.

    The talking matters to people because eventually it leads to a match.... the matches matter because they resolve the issue being talked about... The idea that one is "more important" than the other is a meaningless conversation.... they both go hand in hand. Ideally you want a talent like Will Osprey in a position to tell a story that makes people care about a match so when he decides to bust out his spectacular athleticism it means something and leaves an impact.... but the reason it leaves an impact is because weeks and week, if not months and years built to that one moment in that one match..... and a whole show has to be structured around protecting that moment..... its EVERYTHING at the same time.

    He’s not right and he’s not wrong. Promos are massively important, but they’re pointless without a match. Matches are just matches without story. Theres a common misconception in construction that the preparation is more important than the final touches. This is wrong. You can do the best prep work ever but if you nail off badly or paint poorly it’s a bad job. At the same time you can have the neatest carpentry and the best painter. But if you marked it out wrong and sanded poorly. The finish is garbage. Preparation and finish are equal. Promo and match are equal. The whole things a disaster if one of them is bad.

    The Avengers, specifically Endgame, would not be as successful with just fight scenes between random characters. Its the backstories, character development, reason and rationale that make those movies an experience. Even the need for all the stories and movies preceeding the final fight scene that make that battle so impactful. Otherwise it all means nothing. This is why AEW is no longer interesting. So you can have a pretty good Steak if you cook it right, without the Seasoning, but the Seasoning is just the final thing that makes your Steak taste a little better, but without it, it's still a good Steak.
    AEW are giving you ALL of the Seasoning, with a cheap $1 Steak. WWE are giving you a good Steak but sometimes they are under Seasoning the Steak, and for 99% of people, that's what they would prefer if they had the choice of an over-Seasoned $1 Steak and an under-Seasoned Prime Steak,

    What AEW has never understood is that the Dorkmaster Dave star ratings system is pointless to most wrestling fans. Meltzer’s system is based on made up criteria in his own mind that makes zero sense in the real world. AEW has also never understood the importance of characters and in ring promos that balance out the in ring physicality with matches. Matches should be the execution of what has already been said by characters in their promos to get people interested in the stakes of the matches. Matches are pointless without a reason/story to make those matches mean something. Tony Khan is not a true old school “booker” because a booker would have the talents talk fans into the building via storylines and promos. Tony is a match maker who caters to the smallest portion of his audience aka the Meltzer readers. That’s perhaps the dumbest percentage of a pro wrestling audience because they obviously don’t get or understand the history of real pro wrestling. Pro wrestling is and has always been a story of good versus evil only substituting the specific characters for both sides depending on the talents involved in the story. I’ve legit watched certain matches like Hogan versus Piper on WCW that had pretty lousy in ring matches but the story told with promos and the characters were so good that the match was really just secondary. Matches are important especially if stakes like world championships are on the line but again, you need a story to invest and believe.
