She is a legend! What an incredible human. One of the best lyricists of all time too; her spirit will carry on in every patriarchy smashers around the world.
If there is one band that has educated me about sexuality, feminism and socialism it is The Poison Girls...and for that I thank them. A greatly underestimated and much missed band.
She was an original: fearless and uncompromising. I remember seeing the Poison Girls in Bradford with a friend, we took Vi flowers and strawberries for her 50th birthday. I remember lusting after the young (then) guitarist. Great days.
Sad news to hear of the passing of this very fine human being. I was at her 60th birthday bash in the astoria and was very fortunate to also be at the after gig party later that evening with the entire inner sanctum of the anarko punk movement. I got to speak to Vi and have very fond memories and gratitude for the gift that was and is Vi Subversa. R.I.P
First band I ever saw live was the Poison Girls....they were playing with Crass in Reading, England during the Spring of 1981....I still remember how excited I was to hear a big band live! Hearing of Vi's passing is very sad.....RIP.
@@davehoward22 Seeing Crass live was an event. The first time I ever saw them was at the 100 club in 1981. The show they put on in that dark, dingy basement was amazing. TV screens and film screens showing all sorts of weird stuff was amazing. Saw them a few times after that but I always loved going to a Poison Girls, Rubella Ballet or Dirt gig too. They were always FUN!
I sat on the stage at the 100 Club in 1983 and watched Vi in awe. Benjamin Zephaniah was on that night and I remember him smiling at me as he chanted out "No I don' like dat Thatcher, I don' like dat gurl, I don' like dat Thatcher, She da worst gurl in da wurllld!" RIP Vi, you were a gem.
Were Conflict playing that night? Cos I remember being at the 100 club about that time and having a right good chat with Benjamin Zephaniah before he did his stuff till Conflict came on
@@hopebgood No, they weren't on - only saw Conflict once and that was at Brixton Ace with The Partisans. I can't actually remember who else played at 100 club that night - long time ago! Gigs were great back then - lived in the moment and seen through eyes not 'phones eh?
@@duckedfidgets5354 Yeah, the gig I was talking about might have been 1982. Fun times indeed mate. I saw Conflict more times than I can remember cos they were mates from our part of SE London (but ...sshhh...I always preferred Crass, Poison Girls, Rubella Ballet and Dirt.) ;) Did you use to go to the Centro Iberico?
I love VI .Thanks for sharing this san drifter. I was unaware she had died. She was/is part of my life. A proper punk spirit-what with her being already a mature woman when she started up... Poison girls live was a cracking night out. Presence on stage like a muddy waters or nina simone and words as interesting and funny as leonard cohen. Like a mariane faithfull but with a lot more to say.... a profound storyteller and I am proper sad she`s gone .
Hi there - we're working on a live-stream of Steve Ignorant Band playing Crass songs live from Rockaway Park tonight at 7pm (Saturday 9th April) and would love to include this vid in the live-streamed show! Is it ok for us to use and we can give you a credit as well! Cheers and thanks for any confirmation - much appreciated!
