A Bee Showed Me That Limits Are Lies | Jenna Kanell | TEDxTryon

- Jenna Kanell ponders, “What we would be capable of, if no one told us we had limitations?” The award-winning filmmaker examines the pressure to become something, by asking ourselves what would happen if we tried to “Unbecome” instead.
Jenna Kanell wrote and directed the short film "Bumblebees," a project currently on the film festival circuit and among academic curricula of varying levels. It stars her younger brother Vance, who was born with eight sensory disorders and overcame the negative expectations of medical professionals.
Her TEDxTryon talk explores the concept of discarding the goal of "becoming" in favor of "unbecoming;" applicable to everything from assigned labels and ideals to societal norms. She hopes for you to come away inspired by a new way to embark on your own self-exploration.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
Jenna - After watching The Terrifier, I was fascinated with your performance as an actress and I wanted to know more about you. So, I decided to do a UA-cam search, and I found this video. All I can say is, what an awesome speech! Jenna, I think you are an incredible person with a big heart, and you are a very talented writer, director, and actress!
Ditto!
She was absolutely fantastic in that movie.
I was watching the movie yesterday and I was impressed by her performance! She's smart, beautiful and so talented! Love her work!!
@@Squidthusiast Thank you for that. Family must be very proud of you two.
@@Squidthusiast This really hit home. My two cousins are just like you and your brother. She is the older sister, and her brother also has autism. He is on the higher side of the autism spectrum, so socializing has really been a struggle for him. This talk just really tugged a few strings inside of me. Your talk really inspired me though, and your brother is amazing. I need to start visiting my own cousins more often. Hope you both are doing well, and thank you for this eye opener.
Jenna, this was so sweet. I can tell you're a good sister to you're brother. It was sooo sweet to see you getting emotional at the end too. You are right. We are born believing we can be and do anything, a popstar, an astronaut. I remember as a little girl, I wanted to be so many things, a writer, an actor, a cyclist. But society places limits on you based on what you look like, things that are out of your control. I remember being told I was ugly in high school and made to feel inferior and worthless, opinions which I have now internalised. But just like you and my mother says, we just can't let other people limit us and live by the standards society has set for us. If we do, we give our power away to other people and allow them to decide the choices we make in life. I wish I like, your brother (and bumblebees) was never aware of the limits society had set for me perhaps I would, like him, be more confident and allow myself to fly. Sorry for the wordy comment. I loved your talk. Thank you.
Thomas clueso Huebner Beautifully said, darling, indeed
So 'sweet' *using* her r-tard brother for an ego-boost.
Excellent Jenna! It was great to meet you at TEDx and thank you for your message of limitlessness! Yes Yes YES!
I am thrilled to work with Vance at Cool Ray field where the Atlanta Braves triple a baseball team plays their home games. He is an amazing young man, not because of his disabilities but because of his amazing Abilities.. He is kind, loving and he never stops smiling…..it is impossible to have a bad day with Vance.
Thank you for sharing a small portion of the incredible man Vance, thank you to his family for always advocating for him so we can all enjoy him.
I am thankful and blessed each day I see his unending smile!
Seen in her Terrifier and the Bye Bye Man. It's a delight when she appears on screen.
It's ghastly seeing this narcissistic brat on screen.
@@williamoarlock8634 Are you stalking everyone who disagrees with you?
Great message. I have a cousin who has numerous physical and mental disabilities, doctors said she wouldn't live a year, she had a number of open heart surgeries and spent many hellish days, weeks and months in hospital rooms. She's now 20 years old and lights up every room she enters. Those trying times have given her strength to overcome yet more of life's obstacles.
Best of luck with whatever else this world throws his way. I hope Vance continues on his path to a fulfilling life.
On a lighter note, I loved the Carlton Fisk impersonation as well, that was classic.
Beautiful message to the world Jenna! Hope you are HUGELY proud of who you are and what you do!
Jenna Kanell thank you so much, I'm too moved to say more right now.... Love and light to you
Jenna you are so fucking beautiful to me! :)
@@Squidthusiast Your personality is perfect. I wish I had a sister or a friend like you who could support me anytime. Love you SO MUCH
Jenna Kanell Jenna, I recently commented on your IG about my nephew who is on the mild spectrum of autism. I watched this video and I’m not ashamed to admit I was in tears at the end. Tears of joy, not sadness. Vance is an inspiration and if we ever cross paths, please let him know I’ll bring an extra baseball glove to have a catch with him. You are an inspiration, too, Jenna. I know this wasn’t easy for you to do, but you crushed it. All the best to you and Vance.
@@TheBroSplit Privileged narcissism is considered 'beautiful' in the Holy American Empire.
Beautiful story... Beautiful Jenna.
i have tears in my eyes. it is a tears of joy and happiness for you and your brother, Jenna!
Tears.
Limitations...Thank you Jenna for showing us that limitations are set on us by others... We can overcome what we perceive as limitations...Thank you, Thank you, Thank you....
Dear Ms. Kanell, Greetings. I am proud of you and your brother. Also Hats off to your parents, brother's school and friends. Thanks to TED for introducing you to the world for us to be inspired and motivated. Bumblebee doesn’t "fly up and down" , but amazingly in "front and back" way. Although it flies in a different pathway, still it flies and is a beauty to see and learn from it. God bless you dear. With lots of love and admiration. Chandra.
A brilliant video and amazing short film you have made. You made me laugh and you made me cry and I feel like over the course of 14 minutes you have inspired me to believe in me. Thanks for sharing your story!
Beautiful!
I was diagnosed with autism early last year, but I haven't let that stop me either. Thank you for spreading acceptance and taking the lids off of limiting boxes. Aside from being a phenomenal actor and director, you are an amazing person.
Fascinating
Simply beautiful! Thank you Jenna & Vance for shining the light of the human spirit! ❤️
Just wonderful.
Great video, I was fortunate to watch this, thank you and Life is full of possibilities and once you understand that then everything becomes limitless! After watching this video, i remembered one of the quotes by Steve Jobs which is
"When you grow up you tend to get told that the
world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside
the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice
family life, have fun, save a little money. That's a very limited life.
Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact: Everything
around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter
than you. And you can change it, you can influence it… Once you learn
that, you'll never be the same again"
Jenna, you and your incredible brother are not only limitless - you’re unbelievable gifted. You both have everything our world needs so desperately and what no degree can ever offer: A big caring heart in the right spot and all what comes with it - empathy, generosity and tolerance, combined with playful creativity, courage and the unrelenting will to try, grow and improve.
You must not ever allow anyone to dim your inspiring light and love.
Whoever gave this video a thumbs down - I feel sorry for such poor souls. How freezing cold must a heart be that isn’t enlightened and touched by this bold story.
Inspiring
The doctor said I couldn’t..., but now I can do all of this!👊🏽
BS.
WOW!!! Great..... should give hope to all those who get to see this.I am sharing this!! Thank you. Beautifully presented!! BRAVO!!!
This American narcissism and virtue signalling makes me despair.

I was also brought here by your performance in Terrifier @Jenna Kanell. I salute you. I've worked in child disability and mental health for many years and know that the world needs as many people like you and your brother as it can get. Thanks for sharing Vance's story. Learn being a 'positive' narcissist?
that was awsome
Amazing and beautiful!!! Great presentation and short movie. Truly inspirational.
Damm, this video is awesome, and you're too Jenna. I loved the way your eyes looked while you were speaking :')
Huge fan of Jenna's from Terrifier, and then I decided to see what else she's done, and came across this.
I am a special education teacher at a high school, and I love this idea that we shouldn't limit our children. They have dreams just as we do, and it wasn't that long ago that special needs children weren't even given an education and just fell through the cracks of society. This Tedx talk, as well as Jenna's short film about her brother, was absolutely beautiful.
you are amazing Jenna.....
Another American narcissist.
This was truly beautiful and utterly inspiring.
As someone with autism, this hits really close to home. You're a great sister. By the way, I'm REALLY looking forward to Terrifier now.
Wow this was so motivating. Beautifully said 👏🏼
Depressing and infuriating to me.
Just found this by way of Terrifier. What a great talk. What a great short film. Thank you for making me laugh and cry at the same time.

I was reading about a movie I am seeing tomorrow-- The Bye Bye Man- and came upon this video. Unbelievable. What a truthful journey beautifully told. Nice job on the film about your incredible brother. Look forward to seeing you on the big screen tomorrow too.
Hey Jenna! We didn't like the movie. We LOVED it. Reminded me of a classic late 1970's-early 1980's horror movie. I also read it did well over the opening wkd so mazel tov to you and the Bye Bye Man. Also, is there a link or some place I could watch the entire Bumblebee movie? I can't find one - only finding the trailer for it. Thanks!
Idiot of the year award right here- the ENTIRE film in featured in the Ted talk video above isn't it?
