Thank you for the video. The Cairngorms are a different level of the Fells of northern England. Several years ago there was 9 meters of snow, between MacDhui and Ben A'an, it finally disappeared around early July
@@Fellmandave1 The crashed plane on the west side of the mountain is something else. When I was up it last, you could basically see the outline of Scotland, down to Edinburgh and Seanna Bhraigh and Ben Klibreck in the north
It was genuinely reassuring having it. so thanks for the loan. I would love to have a look at the 66i or even the big daddy montana, but looks like the inreach will be the right one for me ultimately.
Chilly looking beginning. I can’t see myself in the mountains in the cold but I do miss your traveling vids. Hope your wife is good and her nursing has worked out.
I like to tune into a fellmandave because I know I will not just share in a UK hills climbing adventure but a thoughtful commentary, with equipment and training tips, and all wrapped in good mountain ethics - pushing scouts and LNT. Terrific memories from a mountain in snow!
Cracking little film that, quality time with father and son. Spent my time as a kid doing a lot of walking with my parents and have done the same with my kid, love the wild weather on top of a mountain, no better place, makes you feel alive! ✊
Great challenge. To be honest, if you were going to climb Cairn Lochan, and then take your full packs over Cairngorm, I'd have struck camp and gone over Cairn Lochan with the full packs and come down the path via Miadan Craig an Leth-choin, between Cairn Lochan and Lurcher's Crag. It's a nicer descent than the one down by all the ski centre equipment, and would have saved a second trudge over Cairngorm.
Dave, Amazing to see you guys out in the most awesome wilderness in the UK..It takes some effort to video in conditions like that so fair play... Loved seing the snow on the tent.. Even though its not a Hilleberg or Fjallraven.. ATB Tom
Thanks Tom. I am sure you have played cold camera battery roulette many times too. I still yet may dip my toes into a Fjallraven tent, but unlikely to don the hilleberg blinkers any time soon!
A sobering video for me thinking about my first trip to the Cairngorms. The weather station could have just as well been the Arctic weather station. The Garmin inReach Mini 2 has been on my shopping list for too long, time to splash out on safety.
Nice video, guys. It is some years ago, when I visited the Cairngorms including Ben Macduin (in winter). Here's a little tip: If you want to melt snow, always put some water in the pot. Then it goes faster and you don't use as much fuel.
Hi Chris!, thanks for commenting Just watching your latest Saddleworth Moor jobbie. What do you think of all the Scarp 1 hoohaa. Have you watched the John Noble ..Henry Shires interview?
Great video always very enjoyable, Nice to say, I’m not the only one who gets the lighter fluid everywhere using hand warmers I find them a bit hit or miss when lighting.I’m sitting here with acl injury very jealous.
Brilliant video Dave. Something for me to aspire to someday so thanks for the informative tips in those conditions. Have to say the Kuiu looks an impressive shelter up there. Great to see you and the lad out on an adventure too. It’s what it’s all about isn’t it. Atb.
Thanks William. Winter camping in that type of area does feel a bit 'necky'. I am just in awe of those that do remote, committed expeditions for days and weeks. Makes a half day walk from the ski area seem like a walk in the park.
What a great adventure Dave. Shots of the Kuiu in the distance could have been on Antarctica. Love the 'buried in the snow' pitch in the morning. Great stuff. Hope tent fish got a warm bath on return lol. Wonder if I can persuade my daughter to do a similar trip..doubt it. All the best. A
Aye taking the daughters, no chance for mine just now either. We live in hope. But tentfish cannot swim in water and has evolved to live only in tent fug, going into stasis between trips.
Hi Paul, really good, but its faults were also saved by its strengths. in other words a lot of the snow inside the fly we experienced was getting blown in through the roof vents (which dont have mesh on of course) but the deep bathtub ground sheet and the dwr coating on the inner stopped the moisture getting through. I am going to get mesh put on those vents! I always though it was problem from the perspective of insects, but did not think it would be quite so bad in terms of snow. thanks for commenting Paul.
@@Fellmandave1 Thanks for getting back to me Dave. Yes those vents are definitely susceptible to insects and snow. Mesh sounds like a great idea. I guess the size of the storm star also means that a lot of gear has to be stored in the vestibules too. Stay well and keep making great memories and videos. Cheers.
Hi Richard, with 140cm at the head end it's fine. I am 6'1" and Josh is 6'2". Space wise the only criticism is that the inner tent door is a bit porthole like. But that adds to weather protection.
@@Fellmandave1 That’s good to know thank you. They look pretty storm worthy. Do they pack up to a smallish lump? The tent bag they come with looks pretty big. Camped in winter around the area this video was filmed a few times. Your film captures it well. Very beautiful even in extreme wind and snow.
@@Fellmandave1 tbh I'm same I've definitely got to knuckle down and get it built back up I'm out in the lakes this weekend so I'll see how far it's dropped off lol🤔
I visited the Cairngorm plateau for the first time in the summer and loved it, I’m hoping to go at Easter. I’ve walked where you walked but the conditions were rather different. I really want to do what you did but need training first. Were you trying to get some winter QMDs? I’ve got to finish my QMDs prior to assessment before I can start thinking about WML. Thanks!
@@Fellmandave1 always put boots between sleeping bag and bivvy bag so your body heat stops them from freezing solid over night . Carry a small brush to brush all snow off your boots. That's really too kind and very encouraging. Thank you so much!
And the weather's improved over the last 40 years! 😊 (a lot less snow than when I was a kid)
That's not really 'improved'!
Useful footage which shows just how dangerous the Cairngorm plateau can be.

@richardwaudby7338 definitely not a smallish lump Richard. The reinforced pole sleeves add to the bulk. But you know how it is, all are a compromise.

Hi Martin, have no experience of the forclaz but I do think the makalu is great value.
only way to get drinking water is by melying snow in those conditions? that means gas is pretty much useless ?
Well I used gas on this trip. You just need the right mix and the right stove. White gas performs well though.
