    Hey man, love the channel! Looking for the best bang for the buck fly line for an orvis h3f 5w 9foot paired with a mirage lt size 2. Ill be targeting brook trout and small mouth bass. Thanks

    You said beginners shouldn’t buy expensive rods, and I agree, but you only mentioned $1000 H3 rods. Shouldn’t beginners be looking at rods like a Clearwater 8’6 5wt or 9’ 6wt?

      Yeah that’s a great choice for a first rod 👍

    I watched your video on the Orvis Blackout in 2018 - interesting to see it's now called the Helios# Blackout! You picked it right. I was also interested in your comment that you weren't sure about the extra 5 inches of length because my main go to rod is a Daiwa Whisper 10' 3" size 8 rod which is now I estimate 36 years old. If I bump into you on the Tongariro you can try it out! It has caught salmon, sea trout, browns, rainbows and brook trout and still going strong. Keep up the good work!

    • @TrippinOnTrout
      @TrippinOnTrout  2 роки тому

      That extra length has its uses but only In certain situations. I think I still prefer the H3 for the bulk of my fishing here🤙

    Fish, Fish, Fish! Exactly. Definitely agree on the fly line thing. First money well spent should be on upgrading the fly line. Even a junk 9ft 5wt combo rod and reel with a mid tier fly line will get ya moving and improving. You'll learn what you need the more you fish.

    Constantly smacking streamers on my rod tip. Feel bad because I’m using a inherited 8wt 2 piece imperial. My grandfather would be a happy it’s being used at least :D

    I still fish a $180 echo rod after fishing for about 1.5 years. I’ve also gone almost everyday and it’s still is sturdy!

    If your serious about giving fly fishing a go, get some tuition/casting lesson, it's amust. Also most instructors/guides have an array of rods and lines pne can try. Plus it's good to start on good grounding in learning the basics, from personal experience it's hard to get rid of early 'bad habits'!

    Each of those Helios rods are $949 USD. How about ones more reasonably priced?

    • @TrippinOnTrout
      @TrippinOnTrout  3 роки тому

      I was just using my rods as an example of how to think about choosing a rod to suit the type of water you will be fishing. The same principles can be used for any rod at any price range.

    Can’t play golf with only one golf club, can’t fly fish with only one fly rod. From twig water rods up to light saltwater, single handed and Spey, there is always a gap in the line up somewhere 🤷‍♂️

  • @schmoonkie
    @schmoonkie 3 роки тому

    Firstly, Alex explained it well and logically. I own a large number of rods-mostly Winstons. Some are great, some are so-so. Each gives me joy when it’s well matched to the water. I own a few 5 weight 10 foot rods. One big name rod is just too heavy for a full day of fishing. This year I bought a 10 foot 5 weight Scott Centric rod. It performs similary to another 10 footer I own, but is much lighter. This makes a difference when you fish 8 plus hours. A good rod makes playing a fish a thrill.

      Just whenever it’s cracks or starts to sink at the tip, once a season or two usually.

    Awesome arsenal. For my waters, I use Sage X 4wt 9’ for dry dropper. I have 10’6” Helios3 3wt for tight line Nymphing. I have way to many rods, 0wt-9wt. I’ll be thinning herd soon as I really don’t need 30 rods, most of which are Orvis and Sage but I keep eyeing another 2&3 wt for pan fish. Wished I could fish waters in NZ on a daily basis. Hell, I wish I could fish them once.
