    That dress looks amazingly beautiful. I want to learn how to make dresses myself. Pattern making is the hardest part of making a dress. But sewing a dress doesn't looks like difficult at all when you know what your doing. I have subscribed onto your channel :)

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому +1

      I would agree with you on that. When you get the pattern just right, making the garment can be more of a breeze. A pattern almost always needs tweaking to get the fit just right because every body is different and bodies also change from time to time. That’s why it is always important to make a sample garment of any pattern so you can tweak where necessary. Thanks for subscribing :)

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому +25

      Thank you! Some of the materials I had already (e.g. thread, zipper.), but If I had to buy everything it would come to about €80. I was fortunate to find good quality cotton fabric at a local market 78% cheaper than the same fabric I had seen at a local store. If I had to buy the fabric at the store the costs would have been about €150. It took me about 9 hours (including dyeing) to make the dress.

    I watched the video a few times and I'm still confused how you made the skirt? :)

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому +3

      At 0:12 you’ll see at the bottom the pattern of the skirt. it’s basically a big rectangle with a straight edge at the bottom but not at the top. There are marked notches at the top of the “rectangle” that are there to know where to attach it to the bodice (see illustration at 3:00).
      The top of the skirt and the bottom edge of the bodice are not the same width. The width of the skirt is much wider but the 2 must be attached. That’s why the skirt is gathered to shorten the width to meet the width of the bottom edge of the bodice.

      +noelnova me!! Actually...I'm not sure if I missed the part of you cutting the skirt pattern?! How did you create and cut the skirt portion of the dress

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому

      The cutting stage is not shown in the video. The pattern of the skirt is tailored to fit the top of the dress. Cutting the skirt is really no different from cutting the other pieces of the dress. The pattern of the skirt is also placed on the straight grain of the fabric (just like the other pattern pieces) for the obvious reason that it won’t fit on the cross grain. If you’re not familiar at all with cutting fabric, perhaps my previous video on how to place the pattern pieces on fabric for cutting can provide a little bit more insight (starting at 0:20) bit.ly/1qWLSJO. You simply place the pattern on fabric and cut the shape of the pattern out with or without seam allowance, depending on if the pattern has seam allowance included or not.

    • @abbaddabba6100
      @abbaddabba6100 8 років тому

      I think she's asking about the skirt pattern itself. I watched the video because I don't know how to make a long skirt like the one on this dress, but its the only part of the video that was left out. :(

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому

      I’m glad you love them! I usually don’t understitch seams unless it’s necessary. Most of the time pressing it down with an iron keeps things in place. I also like the look of both sides (fabric and lining) not showing stitches.

    I have this dress I LOVE, but thanks to genetics I cant fit in it no more Like I could when I bought it to mess with my mother. I have been looking for a way I can redesign it for awhile into a new dress. Just keep the features I love about it (its shape and color) and make a new dress out of it I could probably even wear to prom? Im thinking the skirt on this with some fabric crystal embellishments could just make one dress people cant look away from and one that I still wouldnt be able to pull off more than once ;) but I mean... atleast I could actually enjoy it somewhere?

    Would this be the same steps if your bodice is straight on the bottom and not curved. I would like to make a doll dress like this one. Would I still be able to get that volume or would I need a hoop or petticoat.

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому

      Yes the process is the same, only the pattern and design will be slightly different. It’s always best to make the dress and then decide if you also want to wear a petticoat/hoop for more volume or not.

    Why did you decide to dye the fabric after sewing instead of before sewing?

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому +2

      It was always my intention to dye it. How it turned out is exactly how I designed it before I made the dress, that’s why I used cotton fabric (other types of fabrics are difficult to dye). I see how it comes across as an afterthought, but I wanted to show that there is the option for it to remain white.

    • @team14robot
      @team14robot 8 років тому

      No no, I know you designed it that way. I guess I didn't ask my question properly. Why didn't you dye the fabric while it was still laying out as pattern pieces before sewing it? I'm thinking about making a dress with an ombre color pattern but worry that if I screw up dyeing the dress when it's finished, I'd have to make the dress all over again. Is it possible to dye the fabric before constructing the dress?

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому +7

      Ah I see. There is always a risk of something going wrong when dyeing especially when you want to get an ombre effect. I can pretty much guarantee that it will not come out the way you envision if you dye the pattern pieces instead of the finished garment. I say that because it will be difficult (I dare say impossible) to dye every piece up to the exact same length. Secondly, when all the pieces are dyed and you stitch them together they will not match seamlessly, that is, not giving you a continuous flow from one pattern piece to the next. If that is not an issue for you then you can dye it before you make the dress. If it is, perhaps you can try dyeing a piece of cloth to get familiar with how to do this so that you feel more confident when doing it for real.

    What is worn under the gown to keep it from dragging on the floor (especially the front) when walking/moving? did you just use petticoats or did you a hoop?

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому

      There is actually nothing underneath. But if you want to wear something underneath you can use use both. I personally prefer petticoats over hoops because of the (natural) look and movement of a skirt when wearing one. Although, a hoop is more comfortable when walking because it keeps the fabric away from your feet at all times.

    What exactly is fusible woven interfacing, what does it do for the dress? :/ I'm a bit confused, if u could write back to me that'd be great...

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому +11

      It’s woven fabric with a fusible side. It’s like a layer of dried glue that’s activated when heat is applied. It enables you to ‘stick’ the interfacing onto your fabric (I did that with an iron in the tutorial at 0:30). The interfacing helped stiffen the fabric for more support around the waist and bust, and helped shape the bodice.

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  8 років тому

      +Jasmine Flower Thank you. Sometimes it’s easy/convenient to use the same fabric but I don’t do that always. The corset can also be on the outside. In that case I would have used actual lining fabric for the inside. Is your request a video suggestion or a request to make the dress/pattern for you? In case of the latter, I don’t take those kinds of requests because I’m not able to commit to that.

    Thank you for sharing your amazing work with us. Very proffessional. do you have a link for buying the stiff ribon you sew to the skirt hem? is it made of plastic? how is it called if i want to buy it on the web? (do'nt think i have it in the stores where i live) where can we get the pattern for the dress?

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому +1

      Thank you for watching. A list of the used materials can be found in the beginning of the video. A link to the pattern can be found in the description box. What I sewed to the hem of the skirt is dense sew-in interlining (non woven fabric) that I bought at a local store. You can also use horsehair braid. This may be easier to find online.

      Hi. Thank you so much! Are you from the Netherlands too or from Flanders? I only have an online shop at the moment. I don't fully remember where I bought the fabric dye, I think a local drugstore. Where I live it’s easy to find, even in the supermarket.

      Hi, you are very welcome. Yes I am, zuid holland. I love your work and your are so tidy! Definately inspired but scared to make mistakes lol. Keep on keeping on. If ever you have any event please let us know. Blessings.

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому

      Cool and thank you again! You’re right, just keep at it, because with every effort you gain more knowledge and experience. Don’t be scared, rather have faith in what you know and/or are instructed to do and be focused while doing it. A result may be perceived as perfect but the process of getting to that result never is. I too make mistakes sometimes and I have to repeat a step. You can still get great results even when you make mistakes along the way. Rectify them and keep it moving. Lol. Just remember that you don’t learn or gain real value from perfection. Blessings to you too!

    I'm a beginner...I'm confused about the fusible lining...in this video the fusible lining it's bigger than fabric lining???

    • @noelnova
      @noelnova  7 років тому +1

      At 0:22 I mention that I’m fusing the interfacing on the lining. As you can see the interfacing is smaller than the lining. That’s because as stated at 0:12 the lining was cut with seam allowance and the fusible interfacing without.

    • @noelnova

      I used a fabric dye for hand use. It was for coloring natural fibers only (e.g. cotton, linen, silk). Any fabric dye for hand use should be fine to use.

      Only if you use the kind that is medium to heavyweight and firm in texture. Something that can hold shape really well and add volume like Duchess satin, Bridal satin.
