- It's Halloween time!! Therefore, we must celebrate... with LOTS of fun and spooky songs. What better way to begin than with "This is Halloween" as performed by VoicePlay?
This song originally can be found in Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas". It's hard to imagine anyone making Danny Elfman's score better, but I think these guys transform it in a new and delightful way!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to VoicePlay's rendition of "This is Halloween" for the first time.

why you don't listen hide and seek ding dong by voiceplay
They're all turning into characters from the movie - Eli turns into the Mayor, J. None turns into the wolfman, Geoff turns into a vampire, Earl turns into the guy with the axe in his head (Bunny!), and Layne turns into a devil. Also, Layne and Geoff do most of their arrangements, and Layne is the one who does a lot of the post-production. Ditto on the Headless Horseman cover Geoff does solo, and the group also just released a cover of Superstition for Halloween this year.
Earl’s character (the axe guy) is called “The Behemoth,” in the movie I think.
The devil is Lock.
legit thought she hadn't seen the movie, or hasn't in a very long time, as they are mimicking many of the character voices from the film (on top of turning into them)
J None definitely had the most complex transformation and his is my favorite; at first he's like "GAH MY VOICE WTF", then OMG TEETH and then "Guys I just can't", and finally "Wait a minute I TOTALLY CAN!"
Eli's had me feeling sorry for the production team because the Mayor is basically just a cylinder with swappable faces, and how do you really do that to a human being? Not a bad job!
But Geoff's takes the cake for menacing makeup. The others basically turn into cartoons, but think I'd be genuinely terrified upon meeting Vampire Geoff in a dark alley.
Geoff Castellucci's "The Headless Horseman" is a great cover👍
true, it will be good if she cheks this song
^^^^^ definitely need to check it out. Amazing cover.
100% agree
The "Blackbird" cover too, I would so love to see those analysed!
@@rio5439 wasn't a big fan of that personally but i'd be happy to watch it regardless :)
I know everyone is asking for Geoff's 'The Headless Horseman' and 'Blackbird' (and rightlfully so cause they are amazing), but you should listen to Voiceplay's Little Mermaid Medley as well, I know you'd really enjoy it being as fun and theatrical as their usual videos.
Agreed! I think Voiceplay as a whole really shined in this medley!
Ditto! That and their Boy Bands in 5 minutes is great!
I personally love the cover of 'death of a bachelor'
Personally prefer the Moana medley, but yes they’re both pretty amazing
Absolutely!!
Gotta toss Voiceplays "Grim Grinning Ghosts" in for the Halloween theme. These guys are always amazing.
Do you mean the unplugged video, from several years ago?
That was impressive; one camera, and one microphone, no post-production that I could tell.
@@hermanrobak1285 there's a production version as well, but either is great
The produced version is SOOOO FUN
the humming in the beginning if this is from that ggg video/song. fun easter egg!
Interestingly, if you listen to the intro of this song, it's the Haunted Mansion theme being hummed.
To me, they're not singing willingly in the beginning. I think the kid not only transported them to Halloween Town, but also transformed them into evil creatures starting with their voices, that's why they looked so surprised not only of the place they are, but also of the sound coming out of their own mouths. As the transformation advanced they start to embraced they're voices. That’s my interpretation of the video!
Geoff is such a gem. I'm developing an unhealthy obsession with his voice, and it's all your doing! Had you not reacted to Oogie Boogie he would've never enter my radar.
Eli deserves so much credit for this song, he's really in the forefront and I love his tone. I wish I could sing like he does (or at all I guess). The way he transforms vocally in these more "fun" songs really shows how versatile and how talented he is. I feel like the other voiceplay members get lost with most reactions and there's so much talent here that isn't Geoff's as great as he is. I'm always thankful that Elizabeth is so attentive to the strengths of each member of the group.
Definitely a Werewolf not a Gorilla.
"Roaaarrr"
"Oh, a Gorilla!"
*clearing the throat* "ROOOOOOAAAARRRRR"
"Oh it's a big Gorilla meme'ing a Wolve" :D
I felt so bad for the poor make up artist when I heard it. Solid werewolf, so idk.....
I cringed so hard when she said Gorilla lol
He doesn't have wolf ears though I don't think... That's so confusing.
@@stanhogenelst2555 Actually he does. That was one of the first things in his transformation. Claws first, then ears and extra hair. Go back to bout 7:30 when she pauses.
One of your fellow reactors said she enjoyed VoicePlay more than Pentatonix or Home Free because they always seemed to have more fun with their music than the other two bands. Not that the other two aren't doing really really well, but these guys are playing -- as in fooling around with their excellent music for the fun of it -- while the others are a bit more serious, so VoicePlay seems to be taking more joy from it than the others.
It's not Halloween themed, but VoicePlay's Moana Medley really shows off each singer's individual abilities really well
help for their names:
Earl - Tenor 1 (he has that unique laser voice, sadly he left the group earlier this year due to personal reasons)
Eli - Tenor 2 (pronounced "L-E") he's the dude with the many different voices!
J.None - Baritone (he has such a smooth, soulful voice and also a pretty good lower register. tho in some older videos there's Tony to see as their baritone, since J only joined 2 years ago)
Geoff - Bass (tho he considers himself a "baritone with a bass range", which is an understatement, since in reality he has a 5,5 octave range xD)
Layne - Drums/Percussion (also sometimes covers the bass line when Geoff is singing a lead and isn't double-tracked)
Eli will also cover baseline if needed when geoff has to sing
@@erikjansen4298 yep, you're right, forgot to add that! eli has a huge range too!
Headless horseman cover and Blackbird cover by Geoff Castellucci please!
Yes react to them pls
Didn't know Blackbird yet, now i know it. :)
I found youuuu, dear BSN tenor jej
@@Deakyfics Yes, it‘s me!
@@jmbmusic1 have you posted something already? I'd love to hear your singing :D
Their version of "Grim Grinning Ghosts" is older but SO worth it.
THIS! It's such a fun song and a great video as well
Both VoicePlay, and Geoff on his own channel, have put out a couple new Halloween songs that are great. But what you really need to hear soon is Geoff's cover of Blackbird!
his version of 'The Bare Necessities' and 'The Headless Horseman' is also great :)
Geoff's headless horseman and blackbird covers are fab, they'll blow your mind.
His cover of Blackbird is incredible.. it gives me chills every time I listen to it. 💜
You should react to voiceplay “what’s this” from nightmare before Christmas to finish the set
Headless horseman cover by Geoff Castellucci! 💙
Even before watching this, I recommend Pentatonix's "Making Christmas" to keep up the Nightmare Before Christmas play list. ;)
You really need to see their Little Mermaid medley with Rachel Potter. It's masterpiece. I've heard it on replay like at least 50 times already and it hasn't even been out that long!
"The axe in the head isn't cute at all". Are we not gonna talk about how voice play got offed by a kid with poisoned candy?!
Geoff headless horseman is really really good. If you want to know who the kid is watch just sing from voiceplay. And forgot to add earlier really love your reactions and the passion you show. The indepth analasys is very educational learning a lot
I love your reactions. You get so fascinated by every nuance of the performances. And not afraid to laugh loudly, which is endearing. Agree, would love to see Voiceplay live. They’re fabulous.
We always talk about Geoff, and with good reason, but Eli absolutely NAILED it in this one. That finale note, the sustain on it... just... whoa.
You gotta check out more Voiceplay!
I would recommend their quite recent little mermaid medley
Yes!
Jeez your everywhere lmao.
Sadly, you won't get to hear Earl when they go on tour again as he is no longer in the group. He left a few months ago. Eli is the one that you liked with the different voices.
Given the 'laser sound' you loved, Voiceplay's Queen Medley would be a great next Voiceplay video for you
Geoff Castellucci's Headless Horseman is a must! ❤️😍❤️
Omg yes!!!!
i love you reactions!! you make my day better🌸🌸🌸
So you're awesome and your reaction/breakdown was great! But when you called the werewolf, a gorilla it cracked me up 😂
the humming in the intro is actually the intro for their Grim Grinning Ghosts video
Your reaction and analysis videos are some of the best I've seen! I've seen tons of different people react and 'analyze' voiceplay songs but yours are the only ones where you actually analyze what's going on. So keep it up!
React Geoff castellucci The headless horseman cover bass singer
Please
“This Is Halloween” by Marilyn Manson should def be on your list for this month
Edit: OH! And the version Broken Peach did is also amazing too
I just recently discovered Broken Peach & have really been enjoying their covers!
You need to checkout voiceplay's version of "Phantom of the Opera"!!!
For Halloween from Voiceplay: Once Upon a Dream; Phantom of the Opera; & What's This?
When you react to "Just Sing" remember to turn on closed captions [CC] to see who is singing.
Just gonna tune in to say that I love your reactions, so very insightful and informative, makes me appreciate Voiceplay's awesome work even more! They have that unique theatric quality about them and their voice acting while singing is insane, that truly makes them special. And yeah, their new "Superstition" cover and Geoff's "Headless Horseman" and "Blackbird" would be so amazing to see your reaction to, please consider doing those!!! As well as so many VP covers and medleys... Queen in 5 mins and Panic! in 4 mins are some of my absolute favs that will blow your mind!
regarding tickets: I think they will announce on their webside first and maybe social media when they have their next gigs and there you surely get infos on how to order tickets... I don't know for sure, sadly I'll very likely never be able to see them live since I live in Europe. But never say never! xD They definitely seem to be incredible live, I can tell just from seeing some yt-vids from their live performances!

You need to see the movie! Only then will you understand the characters.
The rhythm is insanely good (via) the beat boxer
please forget I wrote anything here ... Just fact checked.
No idea how I got facts turned upside down like that. :-(
Look up their live performance on the Sing Off Tour "Road Trip". They are amazing live.
Voctave's Mary Did You Know feat. Mark Lowry is amazing
I second voctave
Out of all the VoicePlay covers they've done, I think this has the most technical bass vocals arrangement. Geoff did a ton of work. Good. Gracious.
An oldie but a goodie that is perfect for the Spooky Season is Voiceplay's Grim Grinning Ghosts. It's how I found them in the first place - I've always had a soft spot for the singing busts from the Haunted Mansion!
Pentatonix - Making Christmas (also from Nightmare before Christmas)
I'm having so much fun watching you having fun!! :D
These guys are fantastic! Thanks for the introduction. 😍😍
10:47 I think is actually more like a growl technique than vocal fry, but it’s still great how you took some time to talk about it!
Yeah I saw that and was like "but that isn't vocal fry???" And scrolled through the comments to see if anyone else mentioned it
@@scootscoot919 ya you can’t really project vocal fry that well, but there’s an airy/growl like sound in it so I’m pretty sure it’s not vocal fry.
You asked for good Christmas numbers to check out: Voctave's arrangement of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" features a collection of tremendous voices and a superhuman tenor soloist.
Everything from Voctave is gold!
You should check out Voiceplays grim grinning ghosts.
I absolutely love your channel, i love the way you say everything positive, even when you're criticizing, it's positive. You even made me answer you outloud the way your drawing us in with the questions. Love it!!
Just found your channel and already love it. If you havent seen it yet VoicePlay does a wonderful job with Daddy Sang Bass
Thank you catmann 630!
I love that you really appreciate what's happening in the background :)
Thank you for providing us with such a detailed analysis of this amazing song from this really fun group.
You'll be sad to know, the guy you liked with the beard, with the really high tenor voice is gone. His name was Earl Elkins. He left the group not too long ago, March or April I think? Been there for many years though, lots of great stuff with him in it. You might really enjoy their version of Phantom of the Opera they did a while back, also he features heavily in their Queen in 5 Minutes and BoyBands in 5 Minutes pieces. All quite good.
6:59 Geoff went full on spine tingler......it worked particularly on you
I love watching you battle between turning away to focus on what you are hearing and wanting to watch what is on the screen. Great reaction and analysis.
If you still check older reactions I’d love to hear your take on VPs Phantom of the Opera.
The guy with "laser focus in his voice" is Earl, and unfortunately, he left the group a short while ago. I think they're currently auditioning replacements if you watch their recent videos. But Earl is awesome. His high notes are amazing.
Elizabeth, would it be possible for me to follow you around and just watch you react to everything? Your enthusiasm and facial expression are amazing!
I literally stumbled upon your channel an hour ago and have just fell in love with the way you analyze and explain what you're hearing, just from the look on your face I can tell you really love music and it brings me joy to see someone who truly loves listening to music and sharing their opinion. Subscribed
Love these reactions! Honestly I don't know how you reactors do it, hold off and not go watching tons and tons of these amazing artists when you're introduced to them. I could never wait! When I found these guys specifically I think I watched most of their videos that were up at the time XD.
Hi Elizabeth, I LOVED this performance and your reaction! I also Love your new top/outfit which looks very comfortable to wear! And I want to Thank Danny Elfman, again, for his original score...he is a Musical Genius! VoicePlay does an Amazing job performing this song and I really enjoyed how each singer transformed into the characters from the movie (Geoff-Vampire, Eli-Mayor, Earl-Behemoth, Layne-Lock (boogie's boys) and J.None-Wolfman!). Thank You, Elizabeth, for another FUN reaction video!!!
Should check out Geoffs stuff on his own channel! Also I think there are a couple live versions of Oogie Boogie song floating around on youtube & it sounds just as amazing.
I agree with you. Eli (the bald guy) really stood out in this video. It wasn’t just the voices he made, i think it was also the facial expressions that won it for me
I am new to this channel and have binge watched all night. I have to admit that most of the music on here does not interest me at all. However, I find myself mesmerized by watching Elizabeth. She is not only very attractive and has very cute and adorable mannerisms but everything she does with with this beautiful focused positive energy. I am a veteran who like many has mental struggles. However, watching these videos helps remind me to focus on positive energy and to move in a forward direction.
I just love your commentary. Your expertise helps me to understand why I just love this type of high level a capella music!
Halloween could be a time to try one of the more extreme metal bands with 'ugly'/monstrous vocals, such as Deicide, Gorguts, Burning Witch, etc (like Jinjer, but more so).
Oh man, you need to watch their road trip thing. It’s so much fun to watch and listen to! It’s a live performance iirc. Not Halloween related, but I can definitely recommend it!
Colter Wall “the devil wears a suit and tie” brewery session. This man has a voice that will ABSOLUTELY blow you away!
Happy to find another review of "This is Halloween"! Agreed all of your points, especially the cute boy 16:17 LOL
I'm really enjoying your reactions. I'm such a huge fan. I love to hear from a voice professional. They just released this year's Halloween video.
Very Superstitious
I gotta say, voiceplay definitely has major strengths in their timing, syncopation, passing parts around and fitting all their parts together. Each person also brings their own strengths in their voice as well, like geoff's range and tone, eli's riffs, layne's beatboxing, Earl's piercing tone and j none's versatility.
Anyone else love how she leans in to hear it better even though she is wearing headphones? Haha
When she hears low notes and gets excited is literally the sexiest thing I've ever seen.
We learn so much from You on how to listen... Following the joy on you face too!!
They actually came out with "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" featuring Rachel Porter. And it is PHENOMENAL!!! I very highly recommend you checking that one out!
Hi Elizabeth! I’ve watched every video you’ve reacted and analyzed. I love how you breakdown every detail of each artist talents. It just shows you’re not just a great opera singer but a wonderful voice coach as well. You’re awesome!!! I wonder if it’s possible if you could create “Most Popular Videos” on your playlist. It would be great for us subscribers to know the most watched videos you’ve reacted. Anyways, it’s just a humble suggestion and I’ll continue to follow your awesome channel. Thanks for being so nice and sweet! You’re beautiful in and out! More love and blessings on your channel!!!
Hi! I love your reactions! if you want to hear how precise and tight their syncopation is, there are some live recordings of their performances on youtube that you can listen to. They are exceptional musicians, for sure.
I got goosebumps and extreme sadless when you said you need to see them live ;-; Earl left the group so there’s no way anymore ;-; But thank you so much for loving voiceplay this much!!! Please keep reacting you’re one of the best reactor out there that appreciate every details and go in depth !!!
Thank you for your great content! If you don’t already have these suggestions for future reactions recorded somewhere, may I suggest:
-Unleash the Archers - “Legacy,” from their newest album or “Northwest Passage,” a recent EP that’s a cover of the Stan Rogers song. The latter will give you a good example of Brittney’s range (but not quite the top of her range, but still high 😉). Unleash the Archers have music videos for both songs.
-Wintersun - “Sons of Winter and Stars” Not only a great composition in and of itself, but you’ll find a really passionate singing and screaming performance by Jari Mäenpää, who lost 25% of his lung capacity as a result of a battle with tuberculosis. It’s really quite amazing what he can do! I suggest using the live rehearsal video recorded at Sonic Pump Studios. I also recommend reading the lyrics ahead of time.
Again, thank you!
I love that you go so in depth with your analysis and talk about certain techniques being used etc, it makes it very interesting to watch! I'd highly recommend checking out Geoff's cover of The Headless Horseman that he recently made, it's an awesome cover and would fit with the Halloween theme!
I love VoicePlay and Geoff, although this was not one of my favorite arrangements for some reason. "The Headless Horseman" by Geoff is wonderful, even though I have loved the Thurl Ravenscroft version for decades. If you are looking at any Home Free videos, "Flowers on the Wall", "Moonshine" and "Folsom Prison Blues" are all perfect examples of making beautiful music in quarantine.
Oh there's some videos of live songs floating around, most notably since you mention different vocal sounds: "Road Trip"! It's a skit they do often and its right up your alley!
I'm just getting into VoicePlay, so I won't comment except to say they're talented, creative and skillful. Instead, I'll slip in a request or recommendation. Voctave. I haven't gone back to see if you have reacted to them. There are numerous recommendable videos, but I just heard their latest, "Someday." It's a great place to start, unless you might want a Christmas warm-up and hear their stunning rendition of "Mary, Did You Know?" that features as soloist the co-writer of the song and well-known southern gospel singer Mark Lowry. Other than that, they do amazing arrangements of Disney songs (medleys) and more. If you don't give them a look, I won't stop watching your fun and insightful reactions, because I enjoy your impish laugh and real reactions.
Next song to react to is The little Mirmaid madley by Voiceplay.
Wicked🤩
Voiceplay Live - Road Trip is worth a listen
I've listened to this reaction repeatedly and every time I enjoy both the reaction and the subject video. Voice amazing. Charismatic voice equally amazing!!!! p.s musicians version of geek out is this video lol
please watch TODRICK HALL FT. PENATONIX-----THE WIZARD OF AHHHH'S a good one for Halloween
Oh! If you want to go back to Nightwish this month, they have one really spooky song called Scaretale! They have an official (live?) video on their channel. It's with Anette as the lead singer (so the 2nd vocalist).
What a fun music video! They're transforming into the city folk from the film! Love the axe bit. I Wasn't sure who he was going to be until then! Great video as always, keep up the great work!
A little late to the party, but that first high-pitch voice that sounds like a squeezed falsetto is aided a lot (so I've found) with creating a Dark L shape with the back of tongue. Such a great production!
I see lots of people are suggesting some of Geoff's covers, and they're wonderful, but I think you'd also really enjoy Voiceplay's cover of "Superstitious" by Stevie Wonder :) They actually feature Omar Cardona in it, who is the brother of Voctave's EJ Cardona!
Their Little Mermaid Medley is wonderful as well, and it features Rachel Potter, who they've done many collabs with.
This was one of my fave episodes with you! How fun!
the "ooooing" in the beginning is from their rendition of "Grim Grinning Ghosts", which they did an AMAZING video for! (its my FAVORITE btw)
"He's a gorilla now?!" - *Shocked face* Wolfmen everywhere.
Intro was from Grim Grinning Ghosts Disney haunted house. They did that too. "Grim Grinning Ghosts - VoicePlay A Cappella" There is also a 3 year earlier live performance without costumes. the costumes are more fun lol... I can't tell you enough how fun it is to listen to music with you.
Please...Geoff's cover of Headless Horseman 😁
It is Halloween time and you had mentioned Danny Elfman. When he was with Oingo Boingo they did a song “Dead mans party” Great song and very cool video you should check it out.
I saw them in the winter this year. Third row center! Fantastic to say the least.
An oldie but a goodie from VoicePlay is Grim Grinning Ghosts. It's perfect for October.
Loved the video and your reaction!! BUT MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION HERE IS: WHERE DID YOU GET THE OCTOPUS FROM???😂
My husband bought it for me after hearing me on a live video chat with my patrons about loving Devin's! It arrived the next day. ;-)
@@TheCharismaticVoice aww that's so sweet and kind of him!!🙌🏽
I really like how in depth with the analysis you go. Some of the analysis I've seen don't really go into everything that makes it up, and I appreciate that you do. Especially covering different parts that happen at the same time. I noticed this in the Oogie Boogie reaction of yours I watched, too. Thanks!
Well I think for Halloween, you need to listen to the band Helloween perform their song Halloween. Michael Kiske has an incredible voice.
