Great point on prospecting, chris. I vastly overpaid on brien taylor topps rookie. Paid $3 in 91, now a common. Financial ruin.
Rough!
Thank you for this chat. I wouldn't want to be in this hobby now as a kid for several reasons. It's not just the cost of things but the fact its now been consolidated down into a monopoly. And grading has in large part imo ruined the hobby for many of us just looking to collect and get our PC guys at a fair price. I loved opening 87 Topps as a kid and the wood grain look. I know cards were overprinted then but they are now as well. Main difference is now we have a junk parallel era instead of just base cards trying to assemble a set. I also plan on getting rid of non PC or non sentimental cards but my collection of great sealed wax I won't be letting go of at yard sale prices either.
Collecting cards now building over one hundred thousand cards all is junk wax baseball, football, basketball and some others then in three years I will retire then i will start to sale, collect, and the most thing is to have fun and make extra money.
Mike, in 1987 I was paying 40 cents (Chicago) for Topps packs. 69 cents? Yikes. Great convo. Don't think I'd like collecting today but we wouldn't know about 80s nostalgia if we were teens now, like you mentioned.
Yeah the $0.69 packs were cello. Not sure if that mattered.
No shitting on Big Ben Mcdonald!!!!
I had 100s of him and Gregg Olson. In 89 90.
Sucks about the running, if you are still somewhat interested in the sport, you should look at collecting some cards. Owens, Nurmi have a ton available
I’ve been looking at Owens cards and have 1 on a big want list.
@@JunkWaxHero35 Muratti? Also foreigner has a few cards
@BreakoutCards that’s the one!
Iv'e collected for 60 years, its not always the card its the hunt.
In a future episode, I would love it if you gave your thoughts on why a PSA 4 graded John Stockton 1997 Skybox Metal Universe card sold for $9,500.
My 2 Favorite Sportscard UA-camr I Follow Regularly Great Content Guys,Keep up the Great Work your Both Doing ❤
Really enjoyed these types of videos. Should consider doing some more with other UA-camrs collectors. Maybe Mike Baseball Collector? Learned a lot about both of you.
Yeah I want to bring back this style video more frequently. Thanks Orlando!
1979 Pirates were the legendary "We are Family" team - Stargell was called Pops - and was credited with being the spiritual leader of the team.
2 questions: 1) How are you using IG and X in the hobby to further your collection. 2) You said you were going to pick up 9 tubs with probably just a few gems. What will you do with the non gem cards?
87 Topps were $.50 where I lived. They were hosing you!😂
Must have been a cello pack. I bought a box of 87 Topps last year and the box shows 0.35 per pack.
@@peasofcardboard Yep. was going to comment, 87 wax was .35c. I bought them by the box at Costco (Price Club at the time) for $10 a box. I spent most of my allowance on sealed wax from Price Club
Great vid!
2 unrelated questions…
1- do you think you will ever run again? 2- Are you still looking to buy collections in Maine?
I honestly don’t know if I’ll run again. Probably. And I am unlikely to buy collections. It’s so much fun, but I just don’t have the time for it.
41:27 The press hated Albert Belle, he was pretty ornery towards them. And yes, the only 50/50 season in MLB history still to this day.
Fun conversation guys! Love the concept! I liked the hours spent on the hobby the most. I think if Chris was sponsored by a shampoo company, it would be hilarious! Head and shoulders front man for baseball cards!
Me being sponsored by a shampoo company would be funnier 👨🏻🦲
@@JunkWaxHero lol 😂
Great answers! Kevin Maas! Todd van Poppel! Ben McDonald! Alex Fernandez! The joy of the chase!
And yet Sam Horn, Gregg Jefferies , and Jerome Walton were left out 😂
Brian Taylor…enough said
Lol, don’t make me bust out my junk wax to add more name!!
I have 100 Todd Van Poppel upper deck. I will never get rid of them. My favorite card
If Brien/Brian Taylor isn't mentioned i always see it as my duty to mention him
When you said, "What might be right for you . . . " I thought you were about to start singing the "Diff'rent Strokes" theme song.
A classic!
Haha! Right on 🎵
The “joy” is spot on …I am in the place now to start pairing down ..
Awesome show guys. Loved it. When I started collecting it was 87 88 89 topps at least w those packs u got 15 cards and 2 or 3 were stars and 2 or 3 were semistars. Now u get 1 -5 cards in most packs. I definitely loved collecting when I grew up. Now I only do singles. Thanks guys
Changing your UA-cam name is still possible and probably a limiting belief in your mind. Sports Cards Dad changed his name from Finance Dad with a lot more followers
Dang, there's some memories, when I have to keep coming across my 13 score Todd van popple RC's...I see them and say...teachable moment...to myself.
lol yup
Can you change your name to Junk Wax/ Vintage Hero?
Nah, I’m not changing
Really enjoyed it, guys. Best Collab ever. U guys put in the work. That’s why you R both at the top of my Subscription lists.
Thanks Karl!
This was so much fun to watch. It truly seems like you both had a good time as well. The conversation was great. You two collaborate so well together. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thanks Ken!
MVP tends to skew in favor of players whose teams that went to the post season. In 1979 the post season meant the Championship Series. Both Stargell and Baylor were instrumental is getting their teams to the Championship Series.
At around the 12 minute mark, what a great question....I think I enjoyed it when I was a kid much more
Man! This duo here is Legendary 😱😱😱💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😎👌💪🏽
Very enjoyable listen for my drive to work. Glad to see the power duo back. Keep it up.
Thanks Eddy!
Great conversation, gents 👏🏼 Thanks for sharing!
Love these 2-way interviews...there is a plethora of possible subjects so it going!!
Back when I was a kid happiness from a pack was whether or not I got Cardinals cards.
This was a fun Q & A and I enjoyed watching you both. Hopefully you guys get together again soon.
Thanks Jim!
Thanks guys, this was fun and I can learn a lot. I'm back in the hobby last 18 months after collecting in what turned out to be the junk wax era as a kid. The first year was the wild west of opening wax but I have realized I would rather collect what has meaning to me and what I want to look at so I'm headed in your direction. Started a channel and love that is has connected me to a bunch of cool people who share a passion for baseball. Look forward to more of these 👊
Awesome!
Great video guys nice conversation. Love the questions and answers.
Thanks Michael!
Stringer was my boy. The series was never the same after he died.
Agreed!
Interesting advice about 'pairing down' or 'changing the focus' of your collections because in the midst of the hunt no one has access to that notion... It's all 'acquire' or 'hunt'... perhaps a video on evolving your pursuits in the hobby?.. I'm at the 'sell' point and it's a very different experience than I've ever had before(collecting since the early 1970s)...
Yeah I talked about it a bunch last summer as I started selling and changing my focus. It’s a difficult transition but so worth it for me.
Great video with 2 of my favorite content creators
Wow, thanks!
Oh man, so sorry to hear about your nerve issue, that must be incredibly frustrating. Glad you found the hobby to help fill that running void. Great episode and I will explore the channel further!
Thank you!
This was so fun to watch, you guys are the Batman and Robin of sports card content
Haha thanks! I’m happy to be the Robin to his Batman
@@JunkWaxHero Then who is the Joker? Geoff Wilson 😆
Some great questions, and great responses.
Great content, as always! Thank you, gents. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Auction House Preview - Nice!!
Mike and Chris are the Super Team Supreme.
The narrowing down of the personal collection is a great idea that I frankly hadn't considered. Great thought provoking content.
Thanks Randy!
@JunkWaxHero went 2 years to college and get far more out of a segment from you and Chris!!!
@@randyworden5232 wow, thanks!
Really enjoyable conversation, cool format with the questions going back and forth, thanks guys!
2 of the greats!
I always enjoy these shows that you guys do together. Great questions.
Thanks Mark!
This was a great video!
Now or the late 80's? Most of us would of been 8- 18 kids in the 80's-90's... ($0) Perhaps if I was in my early 20's and just entered the job market today would be the perfect time to collect.
I don't get collectors with 10's of thousands of cards ? If you don't look at them and enjoy them , it's money sitting on the floor . Not smart if you want to be a bit wealthy or even need to pay bills .
1:44 wire is overrated
31:16 Chris is a great guy with character. Mike you use him to you your brand and instead of refer him business you send business to Vintage breaks. Do you buy breaks? You see supporting a breaker that stole on camera speaks to your character. Vintagebreak pays you well Tell me I’m wrong
Paul and Ringo, are back together! Chris, is a pretty great, Ringo. Whenever I see, Chris, I am Pete Best. Enjoyed watching this video though. I like learning more about some of my favorite people in the hobby. Even if I have heard some before. The not running the way, you used to is sad, but also bitter sweet because maybe you wouldn't be here in this space. Posting content on sport cards. It is more fun collecting in the the junk wax era, than whatever junk wax era we, are in now. However, I will not let the set registry fan club ruin my own card collecting, joy. Oh, I didn't know, or I forgot, Chris has the Ruth SGC 4.5. I knew SGC wasn't so bad. That's cool the National, has UA-camr events. I watched some of the panels last year, which had some UA-camrs talking about their channels/hobby general. I would seek out fellow commenters and viewers, but I wouldn't know, what they look like. That, could be a problem.
Yes, Mike (JWH) does a lot of research, I think Mike (Baseball Collector) also does his homework, which is why I am standing firm, the finals of the tournament will be the 2 Mike's. Mike V.S. Mike. I'll work harder on the slogans. Hmm. He's our Mike. The people's Mike.
All I need is *one mic* (Mike).
lol thanks Andrew. The National actually doesn’t do a UA-cam get together… Baseball Collector Mike puts it together every year!
@@JunkWaxHero Good thing the tournament will be over be then. Wouldn't get too close to the competition.
Mike, I forgot to mentioned earlier the next Mid-Atlantic show is on September 15th. A Sunday. I think Maine to Maryland flight, you could probably fly in under 2 hours. Probably busy. But just wanted to bring it up again, in case you can make it. We just had our show this past Saturday.
@@ACD1994 thanks… I’ll consider it but it’s very unlikely just due to the distance and proximity to the national.
So easy to listen to you two. Well done. ❤
Yet another sports cards podcast that focuses solely on “Bug Cards” and disregards what the other 95% of the hobby is realistically able to buy and does on a daily basis.
