      I'm not one for excessive regulation, but when card companies are generating income from holding customers' hard-earned money for 11 months (and, often, for years), then surely something should be done. Surely there needs to be a body policing the card companies - in the event they are ineffective at policing themselves? In the case you highlight, Topps sold the cards knowing they didn't have the 'relic' to make the card they sold (they wouldn't pay the buyer what he wanted).

      I agree... they should be paying the funds back + interest (certainly in the situation highlighted). If Fanatics truly cared about their customer-base, and wanted to uphold the highest of standards, then holding themselves to account for their failures would go a long way in maintaining customer loyalty and credibility in their brand (even if they are starting to become a monopoly).
      Just my thoughts. Enjoy the rest of your weekend everyone, and thanks for the great content, Mike. 👍

    If I had the free cash I'd jump on the Skenes ball...it sounds like he might be generational. Of course I'm the person that paid $53 for the first Joey Weimer autograph that hit the market. It's a shame though if his hitting can't come around because the rest of his game is top notch and he's exciting and gives a max effort.

    I had a Topps GQ Autograph Missing Black Plate Parallel Bobby Witt Jr. get stolen before delivery, Topps asked me what player or team I would like as a replacement. I asked for Ichiro and now have a 2022 Topps Dynasty Autograph Patches #DAP-I1 Ichiro /10 that should be delivered today, hopefully. I'd say I got an upgrade.

    In these sorts of markets, ask how much power does a consumer have for refunds or replacements? There is very little leverage on the side of the consumer across the board, much less for the Topps Now cards. But across the board, pretty much zero. That is a characteristic of this type of market. There has been very little about this market evolving as other markets do. Every major move by a big player in this market is to slow down the evolution of the market and keep things very much one sided, in favor of the company. Whether it is Topps or PSA, both companies slow down the market as much as possible.

    More gimmicks and scams from Fanatics. Amazing how many people still trust ToppsNow, game used relics,etc. Even the new Bowman baseball seems diluted down to just more paper parallels. My main two PC guys are already in the HOF so I'll keep looking for deals. GameStop thing is a joke but so are most ultra modern PSA slabs. Too many graded cards. PSA new slabs mean nothing to me as long as their corruption and upcharges continue. Thanks for sharing Mike. Congrats on advancing in the Chris Sewall Price is Right tournament. But I saw none of Barkers beauties.

    To add to my last comment, the two biggest things to happen with trading cards over the last 20-30 years (at least since 89 or 81) is the change of definition of the RC and the essential end of "Premium" cards on the market. Those two things are related as both contributed to an explosion of the market. And pretty much everything today comes from those two changes IMO. The RC definition was very strict for years (Beckett's definition was the industry standard essentially). Inserts, numbered parallel cards, non general release sets, etc ... none qualified as RC's previous to the change in definition. Regarding "Premium" cards, the word premium is a trade usage word. A card release has to rise to a certain level of quality to meet the premium definition. That's why you don't see the word "Premium" on the outside of boxes or packs like in the 'old days'. This even applies to those $500+ boxes of cards people brag about. Anyway, the combination of the new definition of an RC along with the essential end of premium cards is what contributed to today's market. And you can bet the resulting changes were predicted, calculated and expected prior to any change.

      @@JunkWaxHeroPlaying devil’s advocate, beyond the loss of use of the purchase funds one might be able to prove (assuming that the original offering was sold out) that they already had a bona fide offer for the card that would have provided the purchaser with a specific significant profit that they are no longer able to realize.

    The concerning thing about these Topps things is that they aren't redemptions. They are being offered live on the Topps website. If they're doing this they should either have the cards in hand, or have the materials that are being put into production. I get the redemptions in that they are waiting for the athlete to sign - I see those more as an IOU. However, if they are live on the Topps retail website, any reasonable person is to assume that the product is 100% good to go.
    As for the redemption, I just made a video of my recent of my redemption swap. I took a page out of your book and reached out via social media. They subbed my Byron Buxton All Star relic auto /10 for a David Ortiz relic auto /25. Absolutely great sub!

  • @jeffw654
    @jeffw654 4 місяці тому

    PSA only said that they were more resistant to UV etc. They didn't say that they were impermeable as this would indicate that they are fully resistant and it would make them liable if something happened.

      From the Sports Collectors Daily article I highlighted:
      PSA highlighted their resistance to scuffs and scratches as well as the fact that they are “impermeable to heat, humidity, water and UV light.”

      Thanks Ziggy. This started off as what seemed like a constructive question so I’ll answer that.
      I spoke with Leighton’s competitors and customers, and then spoke with him at length. The situation you mention happened a couple of years ago. I’m not aware of any recent “grifting” that you allude to, but would be open to learning.
      I only have two sponsors and have been very selective about them. I’ve turned down far more than I’ve accepted. I do this for fun, not for the money. The money is a nice side benefit. My sponsors remain month to month. I’ve ended sponsor relationships over small things and would again. It’s not worth the headache.
