If you know how to unzip a .zip file and move folders around in Windows, you can mod! It's super straight forward and the resources for help are amazing. Personally, I just started by going through the steps on the wiki, but this video makes an even easier start of it. Jump in and have fun!
ModDrop is another option for keeping mods sorted. It's integrated with NexusMods as well, so it'll automatically grab and sort the mods for you. You can even create multiple loadouts with it, if you do multiple different modded runs.

HI! Stardew valley is my first PC game I’ve been investing a lot of time and effort into, I LOVE your videos sm! They are super fun to watch and helpful especially since I’m preparing to go into the skull caverns! Thank you for your content and helping a fellow farm girl out 😅 This is my first mod I have EVER installed or used and it was super easy and fun to do, thank you so much! 💜🥰💜🥰
Oh my god thank you so much, I’m so incredibly tech illiterate and have been trying to get mods to work all day. Gave up and went to UA-cam and finally got it working
Thank You so much so Your excellent Tutorials - You've given an old timer now retired the tools to start exploring the mod(ern) world of gaming and give such comprehensive and easy to follow instructions that within 4 hours this newbie had a tractor on my farm and loving every moment. Big Shout Out to You, SDV and You Tube for starting another chapter in my world of gaming ❤
I am so glad Eric did the update thst made it easier for modders. Cos it made it easier on my end too. Before 1.6 there were 15 or so framework mods I needed to download to download Stardew Valley expanded. Now it’s just like…maybe five or so.
Thanks for the video! Though I do find it a bit weird that you aren't even mentioning Vortex, the mod manager from Nexus Mods. It supports Stardew Valley natively, so you can just download the mods through Nexus over the "download with manager" button. It also has profiles, allows you to disable and enable as needed, and has an update function integrated. Since you can then freely switch between versions, unless you deliberately delete old versions, you could set it up, that one profile uses a newer mod version and another profile an older version.
My first modded playthrough was on Steam Deck, and it was super easy to mod. I haven't gone back to it since 1.6 dropped because I've been playing vanilla and loving it, but I plan to soon! I also use Star Drop, because it's awesome.
1.5 feels like mods finish any loose ends. 1.6 feels like the definitive unmodded version of Stardew Valley. So I'd recommend if you previously played 1.5 with mods, try it without mods first. At most when my PC is fixed I'll install automation, that mod that makes machines use stuff from chests assuming it's compatible with 1.6. even then it's not my biggest requirement for me. Honestly 1.6 just blew it out of the park
I'm on my second modded SV playthrough right now. Played vanilla almost always, and I did vanilla first once 1.6 went live, then I adjusted my mod loadup accordingly. I never use the mods that adjust visual appearances as I like the vanilla sprites/portraits as is. There are some mods I use that add minor things, including giving Shane a new job after completing the community center. My expansion of choice is Ridgeside Village. Since this mod adds a large amount of characters and I'm not that social, I have Part of the Community + Friends Forever mods so I can make sure I don't lose too much.
I just started playing on PC after years of playing on console. I was tired of waiting around for 1.6 to come to console 😅 I've been wanting to mod and i have no idea where to start! Thanks for this!
I’ve found that Content Patcher tries to make mods that aren’t 1.6 compatible still work in 1.6, with a warning in SMAPI that it’s tried but might be a little broken. I’m able to use old mods to change the look of paths just fine!
Even as someone who's been modding for few years, still learnt new things, my eyes totally would always glaze over the easy download buttons on main mod pages, always went to files tab specifically
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS WITH THE PART ABT REVERTING UPDATES!!! I played stardeew valley for the first time after months after the new update, i couldn't run the game cuz there old mods installed and smapi there, I thought i broke the game 💀 uninstalled and reinstalled the game and nothing worked, had to delete the smapi and mod stuff 😢
1:11 keep in mind that if it doesn't show the "download slowly/fast" screen at first you may need to scroll down a little to the "downloads" section and click manual there. I don't know why it does this, but it's annoying, and that's a fix for some mods being "undownloadable" so.. uh... Yeah. Thats it. Have fun.
PSA: if mods aren't showing up in your game, it's because you have to extract them to your mods folder!! 1). pull up your mods folder 2). open up your file explorer 3). right click on one mod 4). press 'extract all' 5). choose the stardew mod folder as your destination 6). you'll know it's extracted then the zipped up folder icon turns into a normal folder 7). repeat with your other mods! :)

Just a question, do you still have a previously started game when using and installing SMAPI? So can you play an already existing game later on with mods? Or do you not have all the games you already started in the SMAPI version?
I'm pretty sure Vortex does what Stardrop does for the most part...every modded game on nexus seemingly has it's own MO to circumvent Vortex. After modding a lot of those games, I've never had a MO be THAT much better for what I would need it to do. So, I'm glad Stardrop is there for people like Salmence, but IMO Vortex works for the majority of us.
