Vandalised Crypt, Grave robbers?

The main feature is the Cantwell Fada, an effigy of a knight from the 1320s/30s; this would have been intended to lie horizontally as a cover to his tomb, but is now set vertically and protected by a transparent cover. When the church was used as a school, misbehaving children were made to kiss the effigy. Later, it had been covered by soil to protect it until 1840, when James Graves uncovered and cleaned it.
Four casts were made; one of them is on display in the National Museum in Dublin
Kilfane Church is a long rectangle with sedilia, altar, book rest and piscina. The sedilia are believed to come from an older church and still have some medieval paint. Three original doorways in the north and south walls are headed by ogee stones.
The castellated tower house at the east end may have housed the presbytery/sacristy and provided residents in the upper storeys.
When the new Church of Ireland building was built across the road, the old church found new use as a church.
The Cantwells were Lords of Kilfane and adjoining areas from shortly after the arrival of the Normans to the confiscations following the Confederation. With legs crossed (possibly signifying that he had been on the Crusades), wearing a fine suit of chain mail, spurs and accompanied by sword and shield bearing the arms of the Cantwell family, it is believed that the figure represents Thomas de Cantwell who died in 1320.

Beautiful Medieval Church..It was really interesting that the priest or vicar lives on there too.,more often or not they had a small house nearby. The Knight was in great condition !I am pleased they covered him!it will protect him.Usually the Knights are buried in a tomb within the church, and his statue is laid on a pillow on the top of it.He looks like he’s free standing though.Still looks nerdy forboding and impressive, even though he’s very old.Fabulouse walk around Sue..Love n Light to you both 🥰

You both only get better as you present more,👏👏👏.As for the crypt ,the coffins probably had a helping hand during vandalism, how would the people involved feel if it was their loved ones being tossed around and valuables if any stolen.Again great effort sue, good to see the ground being kept neat .Well have a good sleep both of you,👋👋👋🙏from ballarat in Oz,🇦🇺

Another wonderful video Sue. It is too bad that people have to desecrate burial places, they may have gotten away with then, but will have to face the ultimate judgement later. The countryside is very beautiful as well A lot of similarities to Central Wisconsin where I currently live. I saw that there were quite a few Williams buried there. My mothers, mothers family are

thank you for taking me along once again to your beautiful green countryside. what a fascinating place that is, i would love to have seen it when it was first built. i seem to recall reading that if the legs are crossed on a knights effigy that it means he was in the Crusades.
if i recall correctly, in Holy Land family tombs, carved in the soft limestone or sandstone are large half moon niches in the walls are where a body was laid out for i think a year to dessicate, and the dry bones were then gathered up and placed in a carved stone box called an ossuary, only as long as a femur, the longest bone. the ossuary is then placed in a niche in the soft stone wall of the family tomb. Progress and urban sprawl disturbs tombs regularly, and the bones are taken off and blessed and buried in an unpublished place by a Rabbi, and the ossuary is then archived.
that is a dry desert method, i wouldn't think dessication would be why there are half moon niches built into the walls of that place you showed us. perhaps for lying in state or other ceremony? if only those walls could talk.

Crikey Sue, this was awesome! I noticed a chain on the right side of the crypt, tells me the mess inside was caused by vandals. Rotten sods. Loved the effigy of the Norman Knight. Beautiful countryside! The church ⛪️ ruins are in good condition, considering their age. The headstones 🪦 looked to be in good condition, considering all that lichen. I am glad someone is trying to maintain the grounds. What happened to the Powers crypt was beyond disgusting!
It probably happened centuries ago ( do you know how old this crypt is? ) It is unfortunate, that the crypt was not properly secured at the beginning. Do you know what happened to the knight's tomb? Thank you very much Sue and GV, for another great video 📹. Have a great day.

I've left a couple comments but never really intro myself. I'm from the Richey's (not sure if I'm spelling it correctly) that imigrated to the U.S. West Coast during the potato famine. I'm afraid I don't really know much about my mother's side of the family. She just never really did tell us about them other than her brother and sisters. The U.S. is so divided now days I don't think they'd even talk to me. I live in Pass Christian, Mississippi. My fathers side of the family was from Mississippi and Missouri but can be traced to White's Inn in England. I've always had a facination with Ireland but I've never been there. Perhaps in another life 🙂

Is this near Thomastown Castle? I heard that there is a wine cellar or something of that sort in the ruins. I have often wanted to see it but never have had a chance to go.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Thomastown Castle is is in a pretty poor state but the cellars that are apparently accessible are in the 19th century section and are in fairly decent condition. The 17th century sections are mostly piles of rubble sadly. I trust that you will use utmost discretion should you visit.

What a remarkable beautiful church. I bet it was hard living there and staying warm even with the fireplaces and having to carry wood up those stairs. No thank you i am spoiled by modern times. It is so nice the cemetary so kept up and the video was great i really enjoyed the walk.❤😊❤😊

Well thank God those impressive ruins are stabilized so they don't deteriorate further.
Why are those lead coffins off the racks? Some disrepectful SOB's pulled them off, probably trying to break them open and rob what was in them. Disgraceful.
Supposedly there's an old saying that if you vandalize a gravesite your own soul will be anchored there until the end of the world as punishment. I wouldn't want to find out if it's true!
