I am a music producer, so I know a bit about digital audio and spectrograms! The eye on the spectrogram is an illusion. If you pay attention, there's a "mirror line" at the upper part of the spectrogram (10k mark) that mirrors a bit of the frequencies below. This mirroring is very probably an artifact of stretching the audio. The method you used in FL Studio for stretching didn't generate this artifact. Also, this mirroring is present all throughout the sound file, it's not unique to the "eye". I believe this "eye", unfortunately, is an accident. Note: maybe you already know this, but in FL Studio you can change the method of stretching by clicking the "Mode" dropdown on the "Time Stretching" panel. Another note: the upper side of the mirroring is more squished because Audacity's spectrogram is not linear (making it appear more like the eye). 10k+ frequencies are less important because they are less distinguishable for humans. Another one: is it just me or the "scar", when sped up, sounds a bit like a human "ugh" noise?
To address your last point, many have pointed out that the scar part sounds like Susie's laugh. Unfortunately, I can't verify that as it's not my area of expertise.
I figured it either had to be that or the filler used was a concept sketch of spr_darkeye and that’s why Sock Muppet was having trouble getting a match.
quite interesting to know it was most likely not intentinal, though if someone pointed it out before deltarune it's perfectly posible that he decided to add it as part of the cannon.
An interesting thing about the "scar" sound is that you can extract it nearly perfectly from the audio via phase cancellation. You can take the beginning part of mus_smile, invert it, and layer it with the middle section to accomplish this. I say "nearly" because there are residual compression artifacts that are present. We would get better results from this if we had a lossless version of mus_smile.

Considering every sound in mus_smile contains "hurt" in the title, and most of the really important monsters SMILE during their death in the genocide run, mus_smile could be interpreted as death or pain itself being put into sound. If you really want to be morbid, perhaps this is what you hear at all times during your death or in the afterlife for these characters. Note this sound's connection to Gaster. just to point out, that a very easy to way to add high frequency information is traditional distortion/clipping, given the nature of the sound it wouldn't surprise me. it almost sounds like there could be a low level ring mod effect added in too. that could explain why the eye isn't as clear as most spectrogram images too, as there's some high frequency noise from the original sample's added harmonics vs. the overlayed sound/images Toby mixed in. Gonna be real this thumbnail doesn’t look like an undertale vid. I only clicked today because my brain happened to make the connection from smile to smile.ogg
So what I’ve gathered is that hurt is a common theme with mus_smile. (Hurt, hurt_girl, and hurt_laugh). It has something to do with the dark eye. It is what plays when trying to call in the darkworld. And that it is played in when playing entry 17, done by (presumably) Gaster. It also plays 666x slowed down (also a number associated with Gaster) in front of the bunker.
Guys guys, if madjicks is an important character now, let's remember that he was supposed to have a special song just for him called "star" that was removed from the final game. Apparently it was supposed to play during battle specifically when you don't move, then madjicks' attacks turn into healing orbs and the music was supposed to play but it was removed. It might be interesting to check that out idk
HELLO I HAVENT FINISJED THE VIDEO BUT I JOTICED SOMETHING!!!!!! In all the characters who use the sound hurtgirl they ALL have some sort of eye imagery, muffet and her spiders, the amalgam and the astigmatism both have odd eye imagery. And it’s a stretch but madjicks orbs actually look kinda like the eyes in the audio, just that the ones in the audio are far sharper!! Specifically on the final frame when the orbs have a full Mini circle inside it could either be the eyes pupil or the second lines around the eye that I thought were eye bags. Just an interesting theory I had!!!!
Oh my god i had a theory talking about muffets dialogue that mentions her getting the tip on the human not liking spiders from a strange person that changed shape in the darkness and finally i have more evidence to connect that man to gaster oh my GOD YES
Well. Despite the obvious darkness mention but. Point is i have a grudge against some ppl in the Andrew Cunningham discord for completely shutting down any meaningful discussion of this and were certain it was mtt but its not mtt because if it was, muffet would know because EVERYONE knows about mtt except maybe toriel and the ruins monsters, and why the hell would he have transformed to and from his neo form just for that its stupid im so mad about that still
Welcome back! That was a really interesting dissection of an audio file. As a person who doesn't know much about audio or computer programs, it was intriguing. Whether you were right or not, for me it was fun, so please keep doing more videos like that! ❤
This provably won't be seen but hey hell: Could astigmatism be the person who tipped off muffet? Astigmatism has a sweet smile and is able to change shape. They'd have money as metaton payed them for their service and they would have areason to, both, be in the area and want the human dead. Their laugh connection may be a bit strained as I can't really find a reason for that. Astigmatism also has connections to the core, which may have been built by gaster (also strenuous but that's what I've got) Hope this does get seen and I hope it is useful. :)
I really like you're videos, there are well made and you digging into interesting stuff. Just keep making video at the rate you can with the data you're able to gather. Being wrong is entire process of researching, the more you bump into wall the closer you get to actual answers. Even if you can't get to any certitudes it's okay. For me the work is as valuable as the result. And I'll say it again, i really like the way you makes video, the editing, and everything. So I'll really stay tuned up for futures videos. Good luck :).
I know it’s late, but I propose an idea, what if the “eye” isn’t the Titan Eyes, but actually the Depths? Like the literal IMAGE_DEPTHS? You can see that the “eye” has a weird inward arrow in the left corner of the “eye”, and if you look at a part of IMAGE_DEPTHS, you can see a similarly diamond shape with an inward arrow. This might mean that Entry #17 is, without a *shadow* of a doubt, about Gaster creating a world darker than dark, and falling into the Depths. In fact, that might be what the droning noise is, Gaster’s muffled pain of being shattered.
i dont know what i was expecting when i clicked on this but i am Definitely not disappointed. the presentation is charming and really just is a prime example of just how insane the lore gets in undertale
The eyes being connected to Gaster isn’t too far off given their cryptic nature, but the spectrogram stuff feels like a stretch and if Muffet turns out to be some confidant of Gaster’s I will eat my socks. Makes no sense
If the "dark eye" image was intentional then it could have been based off an earlier version of the sprite we see in DELTARUNE, which would explain the differences in shape compared to the current version.
I'm not an expert in audio spectroscopy, but I personally think that when it comes to the theorizing/commentary side, this video is substantially better than Writing On The Wall. Still, the distortion/noise in the mus_smile is enough to add a little doubt to the "eye spectrogram" theory (as the left side is pretty distorted), but I definitely think you've made a convincing argument that it's at least plausible.
a big part of the video talks abt how there are frequency cutoffs, my thought is that there may be a higher quality version of the laughs that Toby had and used. the ones used in the game may have been lowered in quality from compression
Like some people have pointed out, I believe the scars are Susie’s laugh/surprised sound from Deltarune, or maybe an older version of it. I’m curious of it’s significance in mus_smile and why it was used specifically for Susie in Deltarune
Really good video, learned stuff I didn't know. Just proves my idea that the Gaster stuff in Undertale is just a Deltarune teaser. The stuff at the last part are a bit iffy to me tho, but not like entirely doubtful. Either way, great vid!
I like how you always present your theories with a grain of salt and a lot of legwork to support your arguments, its always nice to see! I do think there’s something to be considered about that gap in the audio, and the seam covering it up. There does seem to be an odd shape in the left part of the eye I’m wondering about, as it does mess with the match that currently exists from Deltarune. I also feel like the scar noise we’re hearing reminds me more of the noises characters will make while talking; just a single blip of that sound. Maybe none of them matched, but could the sound be made by reversing some audio snippet? It’s something smile.ogg is already doing. As for what it could mean… in a way the audio could represent the Titan itself, if it contains the same eyes. And the slow version at the bunker may be pointing to the place where the Roaring will hit later in Deltarune, just hidden under the surface for the time being. This doesn’t really tie into the Undertale characters and the hurt sfx, I’ll admit, but I feel like saying Muffet will be pivotal to understanding Deltarune a bit silly at this point (who knows, maybe she’ll show up haha).
The eye, to me, looks like a baseball diamond. The section of a baseball field that contains the mount and 4 bases. Also I just realized that might be Dess related?
Very cool! Was wondering, as I havent seen anybody else talk about it, if you knew anything as to the faint beeping heard in the background of ‘Lost Girl’? Thought it could maybe be morse?
Interesting dissection. Something o keep in mind is that Toby has always talked about how Deltarune is its own thing and not supposed to be Undertale. Also, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't see the eye you were talking about. For me, it sorta looks like the Goner Maker background but I'm pretty sure it's just so big coincidence. A lot of images in spectrograms are far more obvious. Still, I haven't seen anyone else try and look at mus_smile so it was fun to see!
To me it looks more like a bird looking sideways to the left side of the screen with some sort of emblem around it. Possibly a hieroglyphic kind of thing? Not denying the dark eye theory, just thought it was an interesting tidbit. Plus the beak is so incredibly clear, while not being something naturally part of the dark eye.
i think the scars were added AFTER the rest of the audio was stretched, it very much sounds like a almost unaltered human groan before speeding it up. even down to it sounding kinda shaky.
I don't know how much time you spend on this, but for me it seems like both this video and your previous video are the first time that these claims and theories have been made. Somehow new things are constantly found about this game to this day which is really impressive. also the way that you edit your videos makes them really interesting to watch the whole way though
It's possible the differences between snd_hurtgirl/snd_hurtlaugh and mus_smile are due to a wrong stretching method selected in FL Studio. Have you tried them all?
I feel like the Dark Eye is probably something Toby did intentionally. Mostly cause Toby hinted at Deltarune way back in 2016. Not joking. Look up Deltarune (the wbesite) on the Wayback Machine, there’s a page from 2016-2017 that basically no one other than Toby could’ve archived. It’s also in Wing Dings talking about Deltarune, which links back to Gaster and the smile audio for obvious reasons.

When you click a chair the text in the website would say 'But what if it could... get darker than dark' There was a chance spamton's eyes would jumpscare the player, and play the soundeffect that I mention.
i'll leave this here, but i think the bunker might be a closed off dark world that we are going to visit in the final chapter.
Specifically on the final frame when the orbs have a full
Mini circle inside it could either be the eyes pupil or the second lines around the eye that I thought were eye bags.
you really need more subs man, I've watched you since petscop.
This provably won't be seen but hey hell:
Could astigmatism be the person who tipped off muffet?
Astigmatism has a sweet smile and is able to change shape.
They'd have money as metaton payed them for their service and they would have areason to, both, be in the area and want the human dead.
Their laugh connection may be a bit strained as I can't really find a reason for that.
Astigmatism also has connections to the core, which may have been built by gaster (also strenuous but that's what I've got)
Hope this does get seen and I hope it is useful.
:)
Excellent video. Really enjoyed it, and enjoyed your methodology of trying to recreate something with the evidence you found
The "scars" portion is most likely Toby's voice. I doubt it's some other sfx
Toby Fox is a genius
I really like you're videos, there are well made and you digging into interesting stuff.
Just keep making video at the rate you can with the data you're able to gather. Being wrong is entire process of researching, the more you bump into wall the closer you get to actual answers.
Even if you can't get to any certitudes it's okay. For me the work is as valuable as the result.
And I'll say it again, i really like the way you makes video, the editing, and everything. So I'll really stay tuned up for futures videos.
Good luck :).
21:35 actually that's the colloquially known man, Purple Guy from Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
1:40 there is no luck involved, mus_smile nor room_gaster are in a FUN event
Doesn't that mean that luck is involved? Since fun events are random, you'd have to be lucky to get a specific fun event
@@lartts7483 nor is a negative, that means neither of these events require FUN values
The scars sped up sounds like one of the stock RPG maker sound effects ua-cam.com/video/TTMwP9W7dJE/v-deo.htmlsi=iuD2vAaJhs9jncru
Super cool video!
Your style of writing theories is just so unique and attention-grabbing, I can't get enough of it :D
That damn sound caused me so many sleepless nights as a kid
i dont know what i was expecting when i clicked on this but i am Definitely not disappointed. the presentation is charming and really just is a prime example of just how insane the lore gets in undertale
The eyes being connected to Gaster isn’t too far off given their cryptic nature, but the spectrogram stuff feels like a stretch and if Muffet turns out to be some confidant of Gaster’s I will eat my socks. Makes no sense
Your videos are so interesting that you completely counter my ADHD and make it very hard to not watch the video all at once.
If the "dark eye" image was intentional then it could have been based off an earlier version of the sprite we see in DELTARUNE, which would explain the differences in shape compared to the current version.
This feels like if an SCP channel tried to make a Captain Disillusion video.
PLEASE make a theory video on the new psychological horror game Tsunagari chess school, it has many mysteries like deltarune its insane really
THAT INTERVIEW WAS REAL I KNEW IT, I WASN'T DELIRIOUS
i forgot how my brain responds to gaster theories the same way as crack
Like some people have pointed out, I believe the scars are Susie’s laugh/surprised sound from Deltarune, or maybe an older version of it. I’m curious of it’s significance in mus_smile and why it was used specifically for Susie in Deltarune
i swear that “scar” sound sounds exactly like the taking damage sound in OFF
like. Dedan’s hurt sound or the ghosts?
you're so right actually
Great to have you back.
Hell yeah! I just re-watched your Writing on the wall video! And I didn't evan knew you JUST made a new episode!
i love your style; it feels so established and characterised!
the sped up "Scar" sound kinda sounds like a portion of Susie's laugh to me, tbh
9:18 is like definitely a cat meowing right? we all hear it?
Oh my god one of my favorite channels on youtube just uploaded... truly a monumental day
Really good video, learned stuff I didn't know.
Also I just realized that might be Dess related?
imagine the scar audio is the damage sound from OFF (which toby was inspired by)
Very cool! Was wondering, as I havent seen anybody else talk about it, if you knew anything as to the faint beeping heard in the background of ‘Lost Girl’? Thought it could maybe be morse?
More like a buzzing vs a beeping, but still 😅
you somehow manage to make it so that I never expect that weird squelchy sound effect that your character makes when it moves
This channel is so freaking underrated
A note I don't think you would've considered, "smiling in the face of bad situations" is a very common theme in undertale.
The eye looks like sideways gaster, and the little columns look like repeating gasters
I think it looks like a baseball diamond personally
scar and Toph show jumpscare! How plesant
Either this is hidden importance and insane pre-planning from toby or an absolute nothingburger.
The snd_hurtgirl sound is from sgm soundfont from the patch called sfx
much enjoyed the Another Medium joke
you can use REAPER spectral edit mode to more easily edit spectrogram stuff. ISSE might be helpful as well.
AAAA idk how I’m a month late, but very excited for this video.
I love ur videos a lot!! Keep being u!
A fantastic coincidence this is. Just find this channel yesterday, I did, and suddenly, upload, Sock does!
WHY WASNT I RECOMMENDED THIS WTFFFFF
and also man i miss petscop :(
23:51 fnaf 4 jumpscare sound
to me the scar sounded like it's saying "fear"
i think the scars were added AFTER the rest of the audio was stretched, it very much sounds like a almost unaltered human groan before speeding it up. even down to it sounding kinda shaky.
the scar sounds like an endermen
I don't know how much time you spend on this, but for me it seems like both this video and your previous video are the first time that these claims and theories have been made. Somehow new things are constantly found about this game to this day which is really impressive.
also the way that you edit your videos makes them really interesting to watch the whole way though
It's possible the differences between snd_hurtgirl/snd_hurtlaugh and mus_smile are due to a wrong stretching method selected in FL Studio. Have you tried them all?
Thank you for the awesome video! Certainly a cool find.
The monster who paid Muffet to kill Frisk was Flowey, he has an deceptively sweet smile and can change the shape of his face.
That makes no sense, seeing as flower’s whole plan revolves around Frisk reaching Asgore as to distract him long enough to get the 6 other souls
Pretty sure it was mettaton
for the "scars" i know that this was created afterwards for deltarune, but when sped up to the "normal" version it sounds like Susie's dialogue sound
Undertale was just a side project, Deltarune is the game Toby Fox always wanted to make.
I can see into the future, good video. Best regards.
Holy sh---!!!! This is insane and I'm so here for it!
the scar sounds like the word zero
22:24 I remmeber hearing a soundeffect like this one before in the Spamton Sweepstakes,
In the website, there was a chance you could find the 'You've won! what's behing door number one' Website. In it, if you clickes a certain door, it would take you to a chair.
When you click a chair the text in the website would say 'But what if it could... get darker than dark'
There was a chance spamton's eyes would jumpscare the player, and play the soundeffect that I mention.
i'll leave this here, but i think the bunker might be a closed off dark world that we are going to visit in the final chapter. After all i've seen in this video and a lot of Jaru's theories, i'm seeing things everywhere, even thinking that the angel might be ghaster or that we will meet him regardless.
How tf did I not know Atrioc interacted with Toby fucking Fox LMAO the overlap is crazy
Same lmao the fucking double take I did when I saw the clip
absolutely insane theory. i love it
Sounds like the Susie hurt sound
