  • A documentary responding to the violence against women with a focus on the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. Every 2 minutes a woman is sexually assaulted. Due to lack of communication, the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing are 150% more times more likely to become victims of abuse, bullying and violence.
**To schedule a Women Empowered seminar in your area, contact info@gracieacademy.com **
The attendees are Deaf women of Austin Texas and Deaf survivors from SafePlace -a home to survivors of domestic abuse. They have been provided with Women Empowered sponsored by the Gracie Family. If you attended the seminar and need access to continued training, contact Malibu Barron.
To learn how you can bring support to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, go to www.whowillanswer.org
Thank you to the Sponsors who made this happen:
    Host: Deaf Women of Texas

I am a survivor of domestic violence and Gracie Jiu Jitsu gave me the confidence to stand up for myself and learn how to protect myself so that I would never have to again. God bless Gracie Jiu Jitsu

Renny Stockholm I walked in and asked what classes did they offer. That was all I had to do because they took the lead from there they offered me a tour they were very personable with me and made me feel so welcome everyone smiled everyone said hi wanted to shake my hand asked me what my name was. It is a very friendly environment. You will feel like you know everyone instantly.

Amazing. I've always been a fan of Martials Arts in general and strangely this video made me proud even though i never practised any JJ specifically.
It also put a tear in my eye, to think women feel the need to practice any form of self defence to defend themselves against the nasty people that exist out there, especially in the bed room.
    Great video

Amazing... Providing for the multitude of communication needs in self defense! This is in our family business plan and I'm so happy to see the alignment with Gracie perspectives. So happy my family is training your programs., even though we are new to the BJJ game.

I'm a woman in Australia (Sydney) I need a women's program like this. It's all for kids and men here. There's no culture established for women's self defence. Especially for survivors of Sexual abuse or PTSD (mastering BJJ Gracie style, would make us feel truly safe? Something that was ripped from us) what you are doing is fantastic.

OLÁ Rener, I was watching this video on my smart TV but I couldn't comment there, so I grab my phone just to say thanks for sharing this beautiful video with the world. Nossa Preneira Dama Michelle Bolsonaro would be happy to see this video. Our brother Renzo may have Access to show her and may start some projects like this in Brazil. Big thanks for the Gracie Family for spread Jiu-Jitsu around the world. I'm Brazilian and teaching Arte Suave in NZ. Oss

I think it's cool how much excitement shines through in the post-seminar interviews where the participants are describing the experience. The woman at 6:17 talking about how it felt to flip someone larger is a great example. It really seemed like the seminar transformed the mindset of many of these women.

This is wonderful for woman . And its definitely being taught by the best. No man should ever put hos hands on a woman but unfortunately times are crazy and its only getting worse. If you're reading this but never looked into self defense or bjj its never too late to get educated and the tools you need to defend yourself. Learn and pass it on .

Being a part of the "deaf and hard of hearing" population and a 30 year veteran of Filipino Martial Arts, I'd like to see the citation that we are "150% more likely to become victims of violence, abuse and bullying."
Where does this statistic come from??
    Otherwise, a well done video!

  • @MrAmerasian

The biggest problem I see is the lack of awareness training. These women can't hear, but perhaps other senses (smell etc.) may be more highly developed. Another problem is the pure violence of an attacker. These women have not likely ever been hit or hurt, and had to continue to fight. I dd not see biting, eye-gouging, or groin grabbing. What about improvised or environmental weapons? I've had difficulty controlling large, strong males in guard, simply because of their girth and/or sheer strength. Constructive criticism...just saying.

Mean Old Lady I agree. Also, they are not training specifically to the belt system. This is a targeted seminar, versus years of training.

@Anthonycruzlbc Assaults on women don't happen like, "Pardon me ma'am, I'm about to rape you. By all means, prepare yourself and notice that I'm standing in front of you with my legs parted to accommodate your foot. Thank you." Usually by the time the woman realizes she is being assaulted she is already on the ground. How exactly do you kick someone in the groin when they are already on top controlling you I wonder? Let's keep this real bro. Keep in mind, a plan is a list of everything that will go wrong when the time comes. Your single item plan is a sure recipe for disaster.

Don't like that the title is "responding to violence against women". needs to be "responding to sexual violence" or "responding to violence", gender should not be a subject in self defense regardless of any kind of statistics.

Men are the biggest victims of physical violence, are not immune to sexual assault, and can experience domestic abuse.
I think your message is gendered oriented and lost on the men and women who understand violence against any human being is inexcusable.
I'm starting to see Dojos, Gyms, Academies, and so forth begin sex discrimination already by providing discounts for women, women only classes, and women focused seminars.
The Gracies like to talk about inclusiveness but all I'm seeing in this is a small percentage (a tragedy nonetheless) of individuals assaulted and blowing these figures into irrational fears.
Is this an attempt at simply pulling in more women students or an actual attempt at preventing violence? Are the classes offered to these victims free or do they come with a dollar sign? Why is one gender focused on over the other? I guess boys and men are just the aggressors all the time and never the victims?
So much for building bridges and not burning them.

    • @ENomad
      @ENomad 9 років тому

Alan Michael Just because there is a response to violence against women doesn't mean that violence against men is diminished. The fact remains that more men are physically capable and likely to take up training than women. Why knock down an attempt to draw in more women to teach them how to perhaps keep from becoming another statistic? Women are seen as weaker and weaker people are targeted. As are children. If you can provide someone with some skill and confidence, it can go a long way in helping THAT individual. The statistics are obviously based more on reported incidents and men are far less likely to report that they were beaten or made a victim of sexual violence due to societal influence if nothing else.
Is it discriminatory, technically. But so are most societies, even if it's just on a cultural basis or the norm. I feel like men are more likely to be concerned about holding their own in a fight because they're pressured to do so. More boys throughout school when I grew up talked about fighting and got into it. Being a man means being the strong one in U.S. culture (and plenty others).
I'm shit at articulating my point so all of this probably looks like BS, but I'm pretty much saying, in response to your question, why not both? Pulling in more female students as a means to prevent more violence by not only helping those students, but changing the norm of martial arts being a combat-oriented sport/practice for men. Just a means of appealing to another audience. Violence obviously doesn't care about gender, women hurt men and women, men hurt men and women. I guess I just don't see the point of arguing discrimination when the result is helping people. At least in this context. I kind of wish their were more shelters and havens for victims that weren't so determined to make it sound like they're only for women seeking refuge.
