- The best speedlight (or speedlite) wireless flash to put on a Nikon Z series (Z5, Z6, Z6ii, Z7, Z7ii, Z8 or Z9) camera is the Godox X2T and TT685ii, and this video is about why and how it works.

Have you have any issues with Nikon and Flash units? I’d love to hear about them…
Great video Ralph. Do you know if the Nikon SB-910 could be controlled by a Godox XT2 Trigger if a Godox receiver is fitted to the base of the Nikon Speedlight? Thanks.
@@thewoodster sorry Richard. I really don’t know.
Hi Ralph. Can you please tell me if there is a setting on the Nikon Z6 ll that when I am doing a portrait photo shoot indoors, I can see my subject in the viewfinder or live view clearly? The moment when I dial my settings in, the screen is dark and I can't see a thing. The photo comes out alright but I just like to see the subject before I take the final shoot.
@@paulross3075 yep you need to turn live view off 👍
@@paulross3075 - There is a "Preview" option that you can assign to one of several buttons. I use Fn-2 on the front of the Z7, just push it and you see the shot as it will expose.
I would truly love to see a video of you setting up the triggers receivers etc… That would be amazing!
Thanks for the feedback Dylan. Appreciate it mate. Will defiantly consider doing it.
Thank you for this video. I have the Nikon Z6ii and I know I want to get into Godox softboxs and flash’s but it is nearly impossible to find which equipment to use for this camera!! I was so frustrated until I found your video! Thank you!!
Thanks for saying that. It’s why I made the video as it was so difficult to work it out. Glad I could help 👍
Godox xt-16 transmitter works great on my z7 -
I'm using Nikon cameras in combination with Godox flash
-TT350
- V860 II/III
-AD400 Pro
AD 600 Pro
I like to dial in these flashes with a Sekonic Speedmaster L-858D with the Sekonic RT-RX module
Problem is/was how to connect te Sekonic with the Godox system so that the Sekonic is in control.
I'm using the Godox XT2 and the Xpro as a trigger on the camera.
Solution was; set the trigger(s) to APP
And thanks a lot for all the great content on UA-cam
That’s awesome Burt. Thanks mate.
Yes please a video on how to use the flash and what’s it’s best for! You’re the only channel I watch for Nikon that I can understand easily
Awww thanks. Speedlights are the hardest things to understand in all photography!! Haha they’re all different and all make no sense and all need to be used differently depending on the camera.
Where was this video a few months ago when I needed it 😉 great content Ralph, keep it up 👍
Haha I felt the same way lol
tnx, i have Z5 and now godox x2t and TT685II, work amazing !!!
Awesome mate. Glad it works well 👍
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Recently got a Z5 my self and want to get a flash as well. Do I need to get the X2T or can I just buy the TT685II and use it on camera?
THANKKKKSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Perfect video, perfect time ♥️
Amazing!! So good. Thanks.
Hey Ralph, I am seeing this Video - late . I own both the D7500. As well as. The Z6 II and have been able to shoot the Yongnuo. Flash Unit as well as their Flash Trigger ' 603 ' . In fact I tetherd 3 flash units to the same shift for a 72 inch Umbrella ( because the. Studio. Only had 1 Ailien Bee unit. )...and taken a few good pics , even altering the flash settings of the individual flash units..
That’s awesome. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Go with the Xpro R2 Pro Mark i, ii, or iii. Far easier to use than the Xpro R2. They also have the TCM button (look it up - it's pretty cool)
Thanks heaps for the suggestion champ 👍
I do not need Nikon SU-4 but I just want to add commander Nikon SU-800 on Nikon Z7II trigger well with all of Nikon speedlight SB-900 or SB-910, even with YN565EX and even with commander speedlite transmitter SU-800 China working excellent on all of SB900 or SB910 and also with YN565EX.
I will try Godox XPRO (N)TCM with X1TTL tomorrow ( I do not upgrade Godox X2TTL because I do not need it)
Sounds like a good strategy there.
Hi do you have a video that shows you how to use the godox v850 ii on a camera?
No sorry I don’t.
I have a Nikon z7ii and a Nikon SB 700 speedlight. Will this transmitter work for my speedlight? Or do I need to get a Godox speedlight?
No idea sorry. Will either need to speak to Nikon or Godox.
Telesin do a neck mount too.

Thanks mate.
I have a Nikon Z6II and after watching your video I've got the both the GODOX trigger and the TT685IIN Flash. I would love to watch a video to how to set them up as I'm struggling a lot plus the flash is BLOCKED so doesn't let me work with it .. would amazing to have some tips for this . cheers
I’ve not done a video yet but can show you the screens I use if you email me 👍
I have a Z 30 camera but I don’t know which Flash is better.
I’d never thought about using a flash on a z30 🤔
Wescott has a great trigger and flashes/strobes.
Great suggestion. And they work with the Z series?
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I have a Z7II
I have a nikon zf and xt2 transmitter and x1r reciever but something's off and i vant work out what as it will only work if i set the flash rate settings to 1/60 in the camera. I neeed to get it more like 1/125 so it will work best for people
Good evening, I have Z7 II (updated firmware), Godox TT350N (updated firmware), Godox TT385N (I CANNOT update firmware), Godox XPRO N (updated firmware).
Z7II & TT385 n , photographer and MANUAL and TTL.
Z7 II & TT685 n, photograph only in MANUAL.
Z7 II & XPRO N & TT385N & TT685, I shoot in MANUAL and TTL.
BUT I CANNOT ACCESS THE ITEM, FLASH CONTROL MODE, ON THE Z7II.
I use a Nikon SB5000 with a Nikon WR-R11b This works great with my Z6
That’s great to know. Can you still buy the WR-R11b?
Update, Jan-10-2022- Yonguno YN968N II - $ 150 - iTTLSpeedLight for Nikon Z Cameras, Built-In Radio - Ordered one - should have it tomorrow - will update post after I test it.
Great stuff. Please do.
This was very helpful, thank you!
I have a question which is killing my brain, if you could please give me a tip or two, I would really appreciate it.
I was in a studio today where I used a strobe light.. my issue is, the room didn't appear to be very dark at all but on the screen/ Live preview of the camera, the studio looked very dark. What can I do so the screen doesn't look so dark? Should I lower the shutter speed, to 1/60 (I had it at 200), or should I raise my ISO but that introduces noise, is there something I'm doing wrong? And is there a way I can see on the screen (live Preview) exactly what I see myself as far as ambient light comes? Or should I just turn off Live preview? Thank you in advance, I hope that wasn't too confusing.
All great questions. Couple of ideas… I shoot at s/s of 1/125 minimum when capturing people. I’m less concerning about my iso going up to 500 or whatever. Aperture is from f1.8 - f3.5. If you turn off live view I think you’ll get an accurate picture of what’s happening. You could turn your strobes up, move them closer to the subject. If you kill all ambient light you can see in the finished photo exactly what your camera is capturing. I hope this helps.
Use Yongnuo RF603N II on the camera (with cable) and the Yongnuo flashes. And with the "old" unchained YN560-TX you can control them offline!
So does the RF603N trigger the YN560-TX which triggers the flashes??
@@RalphMayhewPhotography The flashes are triggered by the RF603N and remotely controled by the YN560-TX.
Each flash must sit on a RF603 N II.
@@WMedl ahhh I see what you mean. Thanks.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography No the RF603N (N for Nikon) at best put on the camera hot shoe and connected by the delivered cable to the accessory terminal (below the HDMI connector - quasi old styled....). The YN560-TX is only needed if the flashes should be controled remotely wihout any connection to the camera.
You can always do that when using a Youngnou wireless flashtrigger.
I did it sometimes with my Olympus having a flash trigger on the camera, controling the flashes with a "unchained" YN560-TX and triggering the shot remotely having another flash trigger at hand.
For my Nikon Z I had to buy those RF693N II triggers for my Yongnou flashes and for the camera because mines did only work for Canon and Olympus....thats why the priduct names end with "C". The YN560-TX does nit work directly with the Nikon Z but does with Canon and Olympus....
@@WMedl hardly an elegant solution though. Godox is such a simple solution and eminently affordable.
My youngo fired on my z5, I used them with my d3200 with the youngo trigger
That's good to hear.
Went down the same rabbit hole after moving to z7 ii from my D810/pocket wizard setup. Pocket wizard expect you to pay for a firmware upgrade that still doesn't give full functionality or buy a $400 trigger. Now selling all my pocket wizard gear and nikon flashes. Waiting for the X2T and AD200 to be delivered right now.
It’s such a pain isn’t it?!? Surely it should be easier than it is.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I never considered it when i swapped over, until i got bored recently and decided I wanted to do some portraits. I have 2 sb600s, a sb800 and sb910 and I cant even slave them with the nikon system without buying a newer flash as commander! I am actually excited to try out the AD200 outside, looks like a beast. I never realised godox had such a big lineup of flashes/strobes. Even if the trigger became outdated with the next camera, spending $80 on another trigger is no big deal.
Yep, I went down the same rabbit hole - coming from D850 to Z8. My pocket wizards will be scrap and maybe I can trade my SB-900. Tomorrow I am going for the Godox V1n and XPro II. Probably I will customize a button to turn off live view.
@@larsthufvesson9725 I dont know what country you are in but i sold my pocketwizards and flashes on ebay and go a few hundred bucks back.
After reading your comment and replies I don't feel like such a big dummy. There isn't anything 'intuitive' about the user interfaces on these devices. In my case it's an R2 Pro Mark II.
Have you tried the new X3 trigger with the Z series If so, how did it work?
No I haven’t sorry.
I'm having trouble with the X3 and my Nikon SB 910 not connecting...
OK Ralph. Just got a Z6 so I'll take your advice for a speed light. If it doesn't work I'm coming after you. LOL!
Lol I feel safe. I know it works for me. If you wanna use the affiliate links - go crazy 😉
Dude. Thanks for the video. Did you test if this transmitter works with rear curtain firing?
Thanks very much. No, sorry I haven’t yet.
yes.
Your "DA MAN"!!!!
yeehawaaa :) Thanks mate.
Hi, Ralph! I want to buy a Godox V1 or V860III for my Nikon z5. Can you tell me whether they will work with X2T or XPro transmitters?
Sorry mate I don’t know. I’ve not used the V1 or V860iii BUT if you call a camera shop that sells them (or email them even) they will be able to tell you 👍
I have the Z6 and use the X1T N, works perfectly until I updated the firmware in booth, now is not working any more, any suggestions?
Please help me thanks
Oh dang that sux. I’ve no idea sorry. Sometime the firmware adds or takes away functions which may render urs ineffective now. Maybe post on Reddit and see what people say.
Please help me set my trigger to my flash to my monolight
I don’t have a mono light but I’d suggest changing its settings to accept the triggers transmission and then fine tune the channel on your trigger to find the mono light.
The Yn560 with the yn200 works
Awesome. Thanks.
Can you do focus stacking with this flash (z5, off camera flash)?
Probably but you do focus stacking in software afterwards from the images you take.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography you can do focus shift shooting in the nikon menu - however there are a couple of things to remember - first frame exposure lock must be set to off or the flash wont fire and silent mode at the bottom of the focus shift menu also has to be off or the flash will again be disabled. Lastly focus shift shooting on the z series has a 2 second delay before firing the first shot of the series so the 2 second remote shutter release mode won't work either.
Will the XT2 trigger a Nikon SB-700 (or any other brand of flash)? Would I need a corresponding Godox receiver with a hot shoe and then just operate the SB-700 in manual mode?
I don’t know sorry.
I wonder the same
What about the Nikon SU-800? Will this work with Z series?
Not sure. In my previous research I don’t recall finding it as a solution, but I could have overlooked it.
Would I need the other light if you get the two thing your mention in the video?
Sorry mate. I’m not sure what you mean? A time stamp might help me.
So the pocket wizard setup won't work with the Z711? I haven't tried it yet, but you did?
No I don’t own a z7ii sorry. What is the pocket wizard set up?
tengo un godox x2t con una Z5 pero no logro que funcione la luz de ayuda de enfoque del x2t sabes como hacaerlo?
I have a godox x2t with a Z5 but I can't get the x2t's focus assist light to work, do you know how to do it?
I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work on the Nikon cameras.
Great video. I have a question though, i own a nikon Z5 and fujifilm xpro2. If i buy the X2T for the nikon, do you think it can also works on the fujifilm? Because last time i used my friend's X2T for Canon and he used Sony A7iii and i used it on my Z5 and it works. So im confused here whether 1 X2T can be used on all brands or not
That’s a great question and I don’t know. A camera shop might. I know I’ve used canon triggers on Nikon and Sony in the past with no problems. I don’t know about this set up though sorry.
you could get lucky with the pin out on the hotshoe and have it work. At least in manual mode. I'd assume for TTL you'd need the brand specific trigger for that to work properly. I never use TTL so I can't say for sure.
I read that TTL won't work with the wrong brand trigger but still works in manual.@@mikerichardson60
Z6ii flash godox 685ii trigger x2t camera flash control not open please help fix this problem
You are probably in silent mode.
It makes zero sense that Nikon would discontinue that wireless transmitter. I've still got a SB-700 speedlight I'd love to use when traveling light but with no ability to control and fire it wirelessly it's basically a dodo bird. I have the Godox Xpro N trigger to use with my AD600BM strobe but I'm not always in need of such a large setup. A speedlight and a shoot thru umbrella can really help make some great portraits without lugging 15lbs of gear around.
That’s Nikon for you, isn’t it - frequently doesn’t make sense 🤷🏼♂️🥲
Will it work with my SB800 flash
You mean will it work on these cameras? Probably but I’d check with Nikon on that.
For my z50 its working with wirelesss trigger. But If I mount the 685 flash directly on the x2t trigger it doesnt work. Any solution?
Hmmm my hunch would be there’s a setting in the flash you need to change.
Will the X2T fire a Nikon flash? I have not been able to get any Godox speedlite to meter properly in TTL on my Z6ii.
I don’t think so. I struggled for a while but eventually found it worked. Mine didn’t work with any non a mount lenses 🤷🏼♂️
Hello, I have a Nikon Z5 camera and I have a Godox RMII - C3, could it work for my flash?

I do t know sorry but you should give it a go if you already have them 👍
I have a Nikon Z6ii and I just bought a SB-700 speed light. Does this mean I can't use the speed light remotely? Is the Godox X2T only compatible with a Godox speed light? I am considering returning my SB-700 if I can't use it remote. TIA!

Any advice for viewfinder setting for off camera flash for zfc? My viewfinder is going black in the seconds between between focus and shutter release :/. Neewer nw580 works great on zfc apart from viewfinder blackout
Hmmm that’s interesting. So as soon as it focuses it goes black until you release the shutter? Quite strange. What flash mode are you on, TTL?
On the Z6ii in the menu choose Custom Settings Menu d9 “Apply settings to live view” set to on or off to work around this.
