Hi guys! A footnote! Just to clarify (due to editing for time), the image quality is fantastic on this camera! The noise in the shadows is most likely due to the lack of noise reduction being applied on the raw capture (thank you Seth, www.youtube.com/@LastXwitness for pointing this out...I'm still learning here). If you shoot in SDR or regular log non-raw, you get clean results. Also, it occurs most if you shoot at 5000, which is on the high range of the first base ISO. Once you use 6400, the image cleans up. However, the flashing green/red is still a mystery. I'll continue to use the camera in real world situations and report back what I find.

I found that the low light video is amazing! Ive owned 12 Nikon cameras and the Z6iii imo has the best low light results, I shot a wedding this past weekend with the Z6iii at 12,000 ISO and was blown away at how clean it looks right out of camera, I do not like the tracking for birds or wildlife, everything eles about the Z6iii I love, Its my backup to my Z9 right now hahaha!

Omar, your videos are just so full of fun, as well as information, they really are a pleasure to watch. I now rarely use my Fuji kit and take my Zf everywhere I go. I too, found that having it set to Autofocus Continuous works best. And as I have said previously, this camera is just so good, and so easy to use, that I can just concentrate on the shot, and not on fiddling with controls. Finally, loved the shot of your son, but where the heck have the years gone? He is growing so quickly into a fine young man.

Owning and using both z9's and z6iii's i can confirm the flickering around ISO 5000.
The camera has dual native ISO of 800 and 6400 when recording in NLog.
That being said, shooting at ISO 5000 would be kind of a rookie mistake as even without the flickering youd have more noise at ISO 5000 than ISO 6400.
Comparing it to the z9 is fun. The Z9 is clean from iso 800 all the way up to 12,800. However it falls apart fast after 12,800. The z9 has a dual native of 800 and 4000. It gets a little more noise as it gets closer to 4000 but its barely noticable. However the z6iii has better and cleaner lowlight performance past 12,800 and is completely usable at 25,600. The only flicker issue on the z6iii seems to appear around 4000-5000 ISO.
Comparing them to the legandary A7siii; it falls apart around ISO 6400 but then cleans up at 12,800.
Out of all the cameras the z9 (z8) is the most freeing experience as you could let it ride on auto ISO and nikon has a good ISO smoothing curve built in so it wont abruptly change ISO. The Z6iii you wont want to use auto ISO on for video.
In all honesty, these examples of peope pushing shadows and ****itting on the camera for noise in the shadows.... Its just stupid. You should never push your shadows that far for two reasons. One it looks super fake and ugly. Two its extremely amateur as you clearly screwed up on your exposure. Like big time screwed up.
My team and I have used Blackmagic Lumix, Sony, Cannon and Nikon. I've cleaned out my locker and gone full nikon for a reason. Its just a rock solid platform nowdays. I still recieve photos and footage from sony and cannon cameras. The z9 and z6iii footage just look so much better and editing is far better.
Thats my two cents at least.

      "big time screwed up"
Not for those that PARTIALLY recover shadows from a SMALL PART of the image.
Which becomes even more important when exposure bracketing is not possible (e.g. moving scene/fast action)
People who talk about photography who don't shoot should really stop talking about photography.

The difference between the Z 6/ii/iii and the Z 8/9 is actually very big when you look under the hood/bonnet.
In IT terms it's about "bandwidth" - something like the total volume of data processed per second.
I applied the same rationale, based on gross sensor resolution, frame rates and ignored the data going to the eVF (while you expose one night shot for 15 minutes using one data path, the eVF is fed by 120 FPS by the sensor and processors and chipsets in the other data path).
In my calculations model, I arrive at some 28,080 MB/sec for the Z 8/9.
      For the the Z 6iii that's only 3,254 MB/s. While a Z 6ii gets to 871 MB/a or Z 7ii to 1,251 MB/s.
      The Z f data give me 876 MB/s.
What "really" goes around in there remains to be seen, but this is based on data that really goes around in the first place.
So there are two big factors that play into the price of the product: the electronics (motherboard and chipsets) as well as the licensing fee Nikon wants to charge for the use of their software features. These cannot however be seen separate from each other. The Z 9 "is" a huge heat sink and its I/Os are never bothered by excruciatingly slow SD-UHS-II cards (that are too flimsy and too expensive per GB), let alone micro-SD cards.

Would you recommend upgrading to the Z6 III for the following attributes?
    - Dynamic range
    - AF tracking / speed
    - Speed in general / processing power
    - Overall functionality
    - Compared to the Z6 II? I mean if it does a noticeable better job at tracking and overall speed in terms of AF

When I was at the test and try event at unique photo, one of the nikon reps made sure to mention the use case of using sunglasses outdoors with the extra bright EVF for wildlife/bird photography as a selling point. That added to the EVF having HDR means being able to see wildlife/birds in vegetation or in trees more easily. It would be good to see more bird/wildlife shooters chime in on this. Of you want to save battery life with the LCD screen flipped out, hit the button on the side of the EVF until it displays it only on the EVF. That way the screen on the back won't come on. But that will make you view the play back in the EVF until you change it back. As far as the dynamic range goes, from my understanding the z6 III has a dual gain sensor like the previous models but they changed things a little. Between ISO 100 and 800 they prioritized dynamic range over the noise. Software can clean up noise pretty good these days. From ISO 800 on up it will prioritize the noise and not the dynamic range. So it may depend on what ISO you shoot at.

      @carlmcneill1139 2 місяці тому

@Thirsty_Fox I think that is correct but it's how they did it. They split it so that you still get the dynamic range when under ISO 800 where you need it the most. Too bad that couldn't have used a BSI sensor.

    • @Thirsty_Fox
      @Thirsty_Fox 2 місяці тому +1

@@carlmcneill1139 Judging by photonstophotos, it's the other way around -- they reduced DR by about 0.5 to 0.75 stops from ISO 100 to 800 compared with the Z6ii. Upwards of 800 they appear to be about the same. Canon has the same issue with trying to improve sensor readout speed and giving up some DR. Sony gave it up on the A9 for the extreme speed, while the A7IV is slow but very high DR. I think it's a challenging physical limitation that they're all trying to balance.

N-Log has lots of issues, starting with a very poor OEM LUT -- suggest just shoot with a flat profile. The Z6III is noisy in the shadows, unfortunately. Looks like this is just a characteristic of the partially stacked sensor, so not likely much can be done to fix it directly. Best hope is that Nikon releases a new improved N-Log with and LUT.

I am a Nikon shooter, but I also have some Fujifilm cameras, and before I switched to nikon I was using my X-T2 (which I still have) and my X-H1 for some pro event work, and I never felt like the AF-C wasn't good enough.
Custom AF-C profile to make is as fast as possible, and honestly the camera was absolutely fine in AF-C, even in lower-ish light situations. Sure, my current Z6 is better, but not to the point that I'd say it's a night and day difference. Absolutely usable, I used it for sports as well, and the AF-C + tracking / wide mode on the X-H1 didn't dissapoint.
Also, side note : as a part landscape photographer, and you want a 24MP camera for landscape, the Z6III is clearly not the best option, and if you don't like the ergos of the Zf, the Z6 and Z6II are absolutely valid options, since they have the same sensor having a little more DR than the Z6III. I am personally delighted with the files I'm getting from my Z6. I plan on getting a Z6III once it becomes affordable in 4/5 years, but for the moment I'm happy with my Z6, and once I'll have a Z6III, I'll probably just whip it out for faster action scenarios or for video shooting and keep the Z6 on the side if I want a slightly smaller camera with better IQ (and a tilt screen, which is my preference)

Basically it replaced my D500 which was fast. Z6iii is much faster, but the Z9 has the larger battery so it wins for that reason.
Sounds like you need to visit a store and handle some camera bodies to see which one gels with you. I'm trying to get away from SD cards - which the Zf uses and the main deal breaker for ME. Z6ii is not going to be much bigger if at all. You may want to check out the Z8 for your hands (if not your budget... :^(. ). Still, the Zf with a grip just might be OK for you. Some time high speed sports and F1 And family and friends get together. Used Z7ii but too much noise grainy in raw but jpeg is super. So need to do denoising, don’t like to spend time in Lightroom to give photos of family and friends for free and a lot more time consuming. Z8 used price same as z6iii new, which is better?? Saw some videos more grains in z6iii than z6ii. I believe if buy z6ii then need to keep d750 for some high speed shoot. If z8 maybe no need to keep d750. This is somewhat what I'd call mid-range, so is the Zf, and the R6 Mark II (and the A7 IV like you mentioned). I will say that from what I've heard though the Z6 III is like a mini Z8 but not quite as fast in terms of AF, but I think a lot of that has to do with the fully stacked sensor vs partially stacked sensor and their readout-speed possibly, although the Zf did show us that the sensor was only part of the story and it was mostly the processor that was holding back the Z6 / Z6 II.

One thing to know is that the stills/video switch also includes a monochrome setting (which I love for street) and it's possible to 'bump' the switch into mono when changing from video to stills. It's just a learned motor skill like everything else though, so in time it's not a problem.

I hate Video Editing, so I usually do SDR with a little HLG. RAW & Heif Photos are Excellent. The Dynamic Range doesn't bother me because I do not shoot in Pro Res or Nikon Pro versions. There is a lot of noise spots in viewing the files but it is does have a noisier clunking noise too, when viewing playback or even going into the menu settings. I believe that is from the Sensor being locked down compared to the Zf which doesn't have this feature. So, I know of two other individuals that are having issues with the camera freezing up. One in Canada and another in Australia. It may be incompatibility problem with the Brand. I ran some tests and the card brand in the CFExpress Card Slot was causing this when the camera was moving or shaking. Not when it was stable on a table or tripod. That Card Brand has no problem with the other cameras that I own only to the Z6III. Freezing is when the dials and buttons do not work anymore, not able to turn the camera off and You see an Error message that to be patient Warning. To Resolve this just pop the battery out and then back in. It will reset some of your settings and the video that You were creating is lost. I have showed this to my local camera store personnel, and it froze in front of them also. Tested this out in two different Z6III's that I own, and I think it might be a card issue. The other two individuals that complained about this, used cards that were not on the compatibility list from Nikon. They placed different brand cards and they worked without any problems on their end. The extra features outweigh the problems with this camera, and I love using it. Cheers! 😊

I have a feeling it will be a flippy screen though since they originally marketed the Z5 as a content creator’s camera, but I really think it’s mostly being used as an affordable stills camera. I can’t spend $3500 on a Z8 just to get a pan/tilt rear screen.

I think maybe you have answered my question before (but I couldn’t find it), I’m no professional, and though I do love to shoot wildlife and landscape, you think I’ll be ok with this Z6iii shooting landscape and nature? It depends on your needs & use case. If you're more into slow and deliberate shooting like portraits and landscapes, then no. My Z6 I is great for this.
One of my biggest frustrations with the Z6 was the lack of speed. Not frame rate or even autofocus - even though tracking left a ton to be desired... Speed as in the ability to adapt to changing conditions quickly - to not get in my way under certain situations. This is where the Z6III really shines. The available focus modes and the customizable buttons for them - It is a highly adaptable & very fast camera to operate. For sports, wildlife, street... it really is miles ahead.

One bug I've noticed though is that the rubber eyepiece seems to block the sensor for switching between EVF and Flippy screen. If I turn the camera on, the rear screen displays properly but once I put my eye to the EVF and take it away again, it will not switch back to the rear screen unless I lift up the rubber eyepiece close to where the sensor is, then is switches back to the rear screen.
