Excellent recommendations. Darcy Coates is an author I still need to discover. I loved Mexican Gothic and the protagonist really grew on me after feeling so skeptical at the beginning of the novel. She was tough, brave and resourceful. Hope you are having a great spooky season. 🎃
Thanks for this. Bought the Deep after this. I love "sea horror." My novel The Weejee Man is frequently described as cosy horror. You might like it. I would say it's more atmosphere over plot.
To be fair to Alma Katsu, art and literature is more than entertainment. It speaks to the human condition and asks questions. Rachel Harrison examines female friendships in Cackle, including finding confidence to stand up to controlling people. Mexican Gothic examines white supremacy and colonialism. I wouldn’t call that cozy. Cozy horror can also ask big questions but I would say T Kingfisher is a better example, using cozy or adorable things while building dread. I appreciate your interest and sharing books you love. That’s important.
I'm reading Carrow Haunt as we speak....loving it!

I really liked The Deep. Loved Mexican Gothic! I too love Darcy Coates and agree with you about The Gravekeeper series it's the best.

Cosy and horror seem to be at odds with one another. I prefer my genres more well-defined.
