A good reason that uniform stood the test of time: it was gorgeous. Not much could be improved upon it. The Odyssey Dress uniform in Star Trek Online is the perfect variant, especially when colored black and gray. Hope we get that one day.

Kirk's admiral uniform in TMP looked sharp. If everyone had a variant of that. Standardization of uniforms is better than the countless variants in TMP.

Agree 100% TMP uniform are unbearably ugly, except for Kirk's one at the beginning (which I suppose is an Admiral uniform). TNG uniforms had a tendecy to look like pajamas, but you could mostly believe that they were a thing. These DEFINITELY looked like the whole cast showed up for work in their night gown.

Kirk was realy the only one i could take siriousley. The rest? Blargh horrible. Kirks Uniform was stylish but also Professional. It also looked futufristik and not like it was some kind pf Pajama like the rest of the Uniforms. The combination of Gray and White was also not an Eysore. So it would realy have been better to give all Kre Members a Uniform in a similiar Styl.

The Red one's look similar to late Victorian era British uniforms. Zulu war type.
I also love the design of the ships seen during this time frame. It's a shame we never had a Sulu show or something.

    • @Maglevspiritualgeek

they also look very similar to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police uniforms

    • @jonathanwebster7091
      @jonathanwebster7091 Рік тому

@@Maglevspiritualgeek both are red (it's actually scarlet) with very dark blue trousers because scarlet and dark blue are the royal livery colours in the UK and the other countries of which the British monarch is head of state (they're the *Royal* Canadian Mounted Police, after all). If an infantry regiment was 'royal', it would have a scarlet tunic, with dark blue trousers and collar and cuffs (facings). Non-royal regiments would have variously different coloured facings.
Incidentally, those scarlet Victorian era uniforms are still a thing, not only in the UK, but in Canada and other commonwealth nations as well.
In the UK, outside their most famous use in the regiments of the Brigade of Guards (the bearskinned guards you see outside Buckingham Palace); they're largely reserved for ceremonial bands and mascot handlers in normal infantry regiments, but they are still a thing as regards orders of dress, and have never been formally abolished.

The red uniforms were the best ones, they had more gravitas than anything that came before or after. the closest would be the grey topped movie uniforms of the latter TNG movie era. one thing not mentioned is the fact that high ranking starfleet officers had service ribbons just like the real military and no other uniforms have had that before or since, though they had those interesting shaped rank patches in the TOS episodes when Kirk was in dress uniform

@@neptuneplaneptune3367 Roddenberry had become almost a hippie at that point. If you look at his non-Trek stuff, and the early concept art for Star Trek Phase II, they shared a lot of that jumpsuit/utopian feel to them. The Wrath of Khan uniforms and rank insignias were the work of Nicholas Meyer and Harve Bennett; Meyer had a 'Horatio Hornblower' vision for Trek, and Roddenberry apparently hated all the stuff we wound up loving about it.

The only TMP uniform that looks good is Admiral Kirk's (IMO). The monster maroon is a beautiful uniform. As far as TNG is concerned, their uniforms did not get better until season 4. Captain Picard's however, with the jacket, was the only that I really liked. But hey, we all have our own ideas as to what looks good and what does not.

Holy hell Starfleet has a real identity issue with so many changing uniforms. I'm glad they dropped the TMP version after the movie. Those were awful.
I wish from TNG on they would have just kept the monster maroons. Picard and Sisko would look deadly in those.
Next? The 30 or so various uniforms of the TNG/DS9/VOY era.

    • @GrnArrow092
      @GrnArrow092 5 років тому +7

The reason why the uniforms were changed is that they were simply uncomfortable for the cast to wear. The cast protested by saying they will not to return until they changed the uniforms. In response, the monster maroon (as they were called) was created to replace what they wore in TMP.

@@GrnArrow092 Well aware for the TMP ones. But after the TOS movie era there's been like 6 separate Admiral uniforms up to DS9/Voyager. Plus 5 separate regular duty uniforms (early TNG, the unisex skirt, TNG late, DS9 early, First Contact/DS9) in the span of like 35 years in universe. To say nothing of Picard's jacket variant, or the First contact vest we see both Picard and Sisko wearing. Or the various dress uniform variants. I'm going to say about 5. Plus the several varieties of cadet uniforms throughout TNG and DS9.
It's like series runners just couldn't decide what Starfleet officers should wear from one season to the next. Like they were never really satisfied with any of the uniforms for Starfleet. I've never found them to be that well thought out, myself. Except maybe the Maroons. But maybe that's why I like them so much. Surrounded by so much meh, a good design might look great.

In addition, combadges came into use sometime in the first half of the 24th century, since we see Lt. Castillo on the Enterprise-C use his in "Yesterday's Enterprise." According to the Star Trek Chronology, the oval-shaped delta combadges came into use in 2347, since we saw the Jack Crusher hologram in his "Family" message to Wesley wearing one (he'd made it when Wesley was an infant). He wasn't wearing the belt either, probably because the Starfleet emblem on its buckle was outdated by that time.

I think that this rather came down to the budgetary restraints TNG producers were experiencing.
      I would personally retcon this.
Also, do you remember the TNG episode where Geordi got stuck on the barren, dark, damp, windy planet with the marooned Romulan?
It was a great episode overall; however, when La Forge and his away team beamed down there straight into the goddamned blizzard, they wore just regular uniforms and the only "special" equipment they were given, apart from the regular tricorder and type 2 phaser, was that pathetic, impractical light torch one HAS to hold in their hand.
No goggles with the possibility of night and heat visions, no mask to prevent the dirt and dust flying right into one's mouth and which would also serve for comm so that they wouldn't have to yell at one another in the thunderous storm, which they actually did on the episode.
Simply pathetic. They did not have money for basically anything.
Also, I always hated on TNG how often they used Data for certain tasks, such as clearing out rubble and heavy boulders from collapsed ceilings, which always made me think of how screwed the crew would have been if he was not there and how CONTINUOUSLY screwed crews of other starships are, because they did not have their own "Data" since he was one of a kind.
Why did they not use other less advanced, non-sentient androids or robots for such situations?
Why did they not use some simple exo-suits to increase their strength?
Why did they not use some handheld tractor beam devices like the one Wesley invented for his school project in S1E3?
      BLOODY HELL!!!
PLEASE give them some goddamned equipment!!
      Retcon! Retcon!! RETCON!!!

Starfleet Marine corps should be brown or green depending on the the decade.

I have a quick question. I was watching City on the Edge of Forever this evening and was reminded that Sulu, and Spock, both wore blue eye shadow. Was that a Starfleet requirement? 😁

i'm an army veteran. to this day, I love looking at various uniforms. I like the wrap-around types, but I love the twok era maroon uniforms. comic books showed extra variety. fer example, a couple different types of twok era wrap around uniforms, dc comics ashes of eden graphic novel showed two kinds of formal dress uniforms and a wrap around. in the mirror universe saga graphic novel were many more twok era uniforms, including a wrap around, prison guard armor, marine corps armor; and on star trek film of gods and men, by 2406, uhura was wearing a new optional style. the actor who played neelix was wearing an enlisted nco olive drab uniform. I intend some of my projects to be Starfleet uniform guides of both canon n non canon uniforms, even those non can uniforms of my design. fer example, the tng era uniforms seen on yesterdays enterprise, in my continuity, are the standard class-a uniforms of Starfleet maco/marine corps.

I always thought the round and oval (pips and squeaks) pins on TWOK era were different from what you stated. Round was 5 years of service, round with a Delta Shield in the center was 10 years of service and ovals were commendations. To be arranged at the wearer's discretion?

Trek has always been good at reusing stuff like the Epsilon 9 station reuse can be seen in this video. Those were a lot of uniforms in TMP. do you know if they were ever repurposed for use in later films or shows?
Mr. Triangulum do you personally own or have you ever tried to acquire anything from the films or shows? uniform, prop, script or anything?

Funny how the shortest lived uniforms were tos (not counting Cage Pike era), TMP and TNG, especially considering tng change s3, though I'm not sure what year tng s1 uniforms were introduced.
I like to think early ds9, Voy uniforms always coexisted with tng style.
I assume Pike Cage style lasted a few decades from April or earlier through tos s1 wnmhgb

It seems fair to say that no one (cast or audience) liked the TMP uniforms. To me, they made everyone look like members of some weird commune.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Paramount wanted to distance themselves as far as possible from that design, in favor of a sci-fi variant on 18th/19th century European militaries.

I find conflicting info on the pips and squeaks. As stated here the 1 and 5 years respectively, but that ignores the delta pips. I tend to favor the pips and delta pips as 5 and 10 years respectively [no 1 yr, you round down], and squeaks are commendations. But I dunno.
