  • A day in the life of a Japanese Wagyu Beef Farmer AKA Japanese wagyu cattle farmer. This video helps explain what is wagyu beef and how it is made in Japan, specifically Miyazaki Beef 宮崎牛 a premium Wagyu. We follow, Ryuji, who runs a Japanese wagyu cattle farm in Miyazaki. As mentioned in the video, if you want to help support the farm check out
    This is Ryuji's typical day a day a wagyu farmer from morning until evening. We even visit a Japanese Wagyu Cattle auction during his day and see him sell 3 of of his Japanese kuroge black haired cows. Ryuji raises Miyazaki Gyu, Gyu meaning beef, from Japanese Black Haired cattle, a brand of Wagyu. Wagyu literally translated means Japanese Beef, but all beef raised in Japan domestically is not considered Wagyu. Wagyu is a premium grade beef in Japan and refers specifically to four breeds of cattle - Black hair, Brown hair, Polled and Shorthorn raised and bred in Japan with the strictest guidelines and requirements ultimately producing a high-end quality Japanese beef known worldwide for it’s beautiful marbling and deep umami flavor.
    In fact, Japan has over 200 premium Wagyu brands throughout the country each with its own unique methods to raise it’s cattle, The Kobe Beef brand, is probably the most known overseas because it was the first wagyu brand promoted internationally due it being located at one Japan’s largest port cities. Ryuji’s Miyazaki Beef brand, specifically produces the highest grade of Wagyu possible, A4 and A5 quality, which is one of the reasons why Miyazaki Beef is one of the leading wagyu brands in Japan

      That's the Japanese for you. Everything is super clean. I think it's super cool, but to me it felt somewhat uncomfortable to walk the streets there, since they were clean/planned to the point of perfection. Almost sterile. I'm really taken with how friendly "the competition" is, how he learns from older and more experienced farmers who, in places like the US, would be considered your rival and unwilling to share what they know, as that would give you an advantage. Even asking fellow artists for what kinds of materials they use elicits a safeguarding response! I love the sense of community rather than rivalry!

    • @GlamGoddes101
      @GlamGoddes101 Рік тому

    • @LittleParade_
      @LittleParade_ Рік тому +2

      @@GlamGoddes101 it's definitely a mixed bag, but that's not to say that there aren't some really amazing and friendly artists out there that are willing to help you out either! There are plenty that have no problem telling you what size canvas they usually use, but then there are others where you ask what their brush settings are and you get the silent treatment haha, my comment was kind of exaggerating I admit!

    • @RealzFoSho
      @RealzFoSho Рік тому +5

      There is so much sharing in the United States amongst farmers. There is definitely competition, but friendly competition in my experience. I am not sure where you are or what direct experience you had with farmers, but my experiences have been great. If you actually spent time in a farming community in the US and felt it was not friendly, I don't know what to tell you other than that you may have been the problem. I have seen rivals, but it was specific people. Maybe a bad land deal or someone rubbing another the wrong way, but it seems rare and isolated to a specific rival (a farmer may be unfriendly with one specific rival but still friendly with the rest of the farmers in the area).

    • @LittleParade_
      @LittleParade_ Рік тому +2

      @@RealzFoSho I am not a farmer, so that may be my problem lmao in my original comment, I'm referring more to just the business end of any profession in general, I can't speak specifically for farmers because I'm not one, but as an artist, many popular artists are unwilling to share their manufacturers for products they may be selling, for fear of revealing the opportunity to other artists that may replace them. It's something that happens everywhere in any trade, so it's ignorant to assume that whole communities are good and willing to help someone that shares their audience, and vice versa there aren't all bad communities either. Like my previous comment stated, it's a mixed bag.

Of course, this is a rural area, so it's less expensive, but still. And as a farmer, he's not going to be swanning around in expensive clothes or cars. It wouldn't play well among his fellow farmers. I've known plenty of American farmers in my time. Their kids haven't been pretentious wastrels either.

      His father probably lives on the land nearby as it is still his. But the town they live in isn't that big and the son and the workers probably all live within 10-15min drive and can get to the farm very quickly in the event of an emergency.
      Most likely the son will move onto the farm estate once he takes over/gets married etc. but you can't blame him for having a little distance from the parents with a live in girlfriend, might get weird during frisky nights.

    As a volunteer cattle and sheep farmer on my family's 20 acre lifestyle block, I found this episode to be one of the best, and you've done some good ones in the past! How I'd love to have some of the "toys" Ryuji and his family have access to! It's all pretty much manual labour for me. That said, when the cattle are on the farm here, I only have to keep an eye on them most of the time, since they just forage in the fields on their own (except when droughts arrive, then it's feeding out 3-4 times a day... by hand... with no machinery...).
    Ryuji's cattle are fine-looking animals, and he sure does have the touch of handling such big beasts. I get nervous dealing with heifers or steers once they pass the 200kg mark, as I know what it feels like to be trodden on by one of them. Ouch. Fortunately, my family moves its cattle on to the sales around the 450kg mark, so I don't have to deal with the "car on 4 hooves" that Ryuji does, ha ha. What a difference it makes having the animals penned, though - makes them much more docile and manageable. When cattle are in the open fields, they get a very "independent attitude" happening, which makes shifting them, without dogs mind you, quite the challenge.
    The only disappointing thing I found in the whole video was seeing Ryuji and his GF puffing away like chimneys on their "ciggies". I know smoking is still a lot more prevalent in Asian countries than most western ones, but it still felt a bit of a "let down" to see two young people destroying their lungs, while working in the countryside, with those vile "cancer sticks". Maybe he'll wake up one day and "learn" how much damage tar and smoke does to his lungs, before it's too late.

      Until you realize that Japan doesn't respect Foreigners, you are an oddity or curiosity at best. Its legal and acceptable practice for housing to flat out reject anyone who is not native born Japanese from renting an apartment or buying a home in Japan, even if they are a permanent resident of Japan or became a Japanese citizen (which requires being a resident of japan for over 5 years for a foreigner, and jumping through so many hoops you essentially need to hire an agency that specializes in the paperwork.)

    Also, cows need way more credit. They're really awesome animals to work with. Intimidating to work with at first, but quite sweet and curious animals.
    Big props to all the large animal veterinarians. It's definitely not easy work and dangerous too. 10 farms a day! That's incredible. I can't imagine having to pull multiple calves a day. Ouch.

And sometimes got to go and see then on field trips. I have to say - those cows are treated REALLY well. They get get regular massages, and even get to drink beer sometimes. (Seriously! What is so great for the cows, to be kept 24/7 indoors, never eat fresh grass ,not able to run in green fields feeling the warmth of the sun, and yes even rain on their body? Even inmates in prison are let out in the fresh air. I would not eat that meat even if it was free. That is abuse for profit, sadly that is far to common today.
