May I suggest looking at John Hait's passive annual heat storage design, instead of insulating between water tank and house, and against the walls, he would put a waterproof barrier with insulation over the house like an umbrella, which extends out about 20 feet by the time it reaches floor level. All the soil stays dry and is insulated from seasonal changes. Then air tubes run through all that mass, starting outside and running 100 feet to go inside. A second tube comes back out another 100 feet and are located low and high inside to create a thermosiphon. Hot summer air is drawn in and cooled, warming the earth mass. Then in winter cold air comes through the warmed mass before reaching the interior. This allowed building in Montana without any additional heating or cooling. So you could have the cistern within/under the insulating umbrella, and the house would benefit from the thermal mass, which will be lost if you apply insulation just outside the walls. This umbrella would then be covered with 2-3 feet of soil and planted out normally, and that top layer of soil warms and cools like normal, but underneath it stays much stabler, and is charged by the air passing through so it reaches a higher average temperature.

I've been on the same mission as you for the last 5 years, Permaculture design course, Taos New Mexico for earthship building, and now building a simple survival model. I live in Montana USA, and need to improve on the heating and integrate a big greenhouse to grow fruit trees year around. But like you we get weeks without sun at the same time it can get down to -45 degrees Fahrenheit for two or three weeks in winter. I found a must read book "Passive Annual Heat Storage: Improving the Design of Earth Shelters'' . Its concept is to heat your house in the winter with the summer sun. By passively storing up to 6 months of heat for the winter with out spending more. It's all about the money. I had to read it 4 times to get all the info.
    Good luck with your build

    Great idea Alosha!
Think to insulate, this, you will need to get a spray rig to do the insulation. Spray insulation closed cell is very toxic. Paying to spray that much insulation would be $100,000 USD. That is with labor. What do you think of using aircrete for the insulation. Less toxic and better compression strength. Pumping aircrete, can be done with concrete pumps in lifts with reinforcement of basalt or regular steel rebar.
Think you need two of 3 of those pipes for waterlogged soils.
    Namaste,
    Jay

    • @AloshaLynov
      @AloshaLynov  4 роки тому +4

love the idea I was not going to spray insulation but rather use rigid foam board 10 cm thick.
Aircrete bricks will also work well , will cost it out. I do have the little dragon to make aircrete

I love your designs, brother ! I'm about 1/3 done with mine. I used hubs from a childrens playground 2v dome. I quadrupled the 2 sizes of struts and built into the mountain with the front up on pillars about 7 feet high. then added a deck and under that is the atrium. I'm engineering the framing of the 2 paned sliding glass windows that will be the front atrium windows.
inside is a 3 level living area. its slow goin right now because the weather is very hot.
I have an Idea on primal abd possobly easu main construction using wattles. they are found everywhere and are used as erosion control on building sites. they are basically mesh or nylon with straw inside them. the end reault it a honey comb like look. the wattles are dragged through a trough filled with portland cement and soaked. then they are stacked and manipulated into whatever shape you like.
I will try this and build a garage first- then go further, I hope.
Anyway, always a pleasure to see what you are up to.
If your ever in Calif, your have to come check it out and ride the zip lines.
    Take care brother,
    Wulfy

Great video! One question I have is how is warm air sinking to go under the floor? From what I remember, hot air rises unless it's forced to do something different. The only ways I can see warm air going down through the floor is either a positive pressure above the floor or a negative pressure in the stove area.

With a high water table can't you just have a small tube well in the house? The rain water and eventually the grey water be directed to reacharge from the outside via drain tile under wood chip paths through raised beds to rain garden? Is some of the geothermally heated fresh air going into the house for fresh air? Could the exhaust from the oven exit between the house and water tank to help keep the tank from freezing?

I wonder if you have thought about using the thermal difference of underground structures like root cellars and warm structures like greenhouses to make steady electricity (even at night) using peltier-elements? I have been thinking about that a lot, lately :) They are only 5% effective, but the do work at night as well, so if you look at cold climates that are often overcast: a greenhouse will still warm up and anyway, you just need a temperature difference. Pelties elements are very very cheap. I don´t think you will be able to get the same production as solar, but you can sure load up a battery, because it kind of always goes and living means making temperature differences and having leakage, this way, you get to use the leakage.

I want to use the ancient kobb, or cobb cement of clay, sand and straw because I live in cold Canada and my location has lots of clay sand and straw. Plus field stones, all for free.
Would I be able to use kobb with your design?
Also I don't mind if it's not a complete dome, especially if a not-so-circle shape would be easier to design a living space around.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Ebner Effect is method of making plants to grow and appear as they were in ancient and prehistorical times. Usually these are very beneficial qualities like resistance to different factors, bigger yields / crops, bigger size etc. Scientist often mention 'gene expression' term - expressing different qualities of organisms still stored in areas of DNA that scientist do not have clue about it yet. We place seeds for germination in very high DC elecric field (around 1kV/cm) between two electrical conductor plates, wait for forming big sprouts and move them to the soil. Mr. Ebner, son of discoverer of this phenomenon is popularizing it from Switzerland - www.fios-greenbox.net

I've seen a version of classic Earthship that had the roof tipped over to the front, south side. Water tanks were at the front of each side also. Have you considered making the greenhouse aspect of the structure a walipini. By having the bulk of the lower walls subterranean you insulate and add thermal mass around the area being heated by solar means during the day. I have been researching doing something similar to what you propose here. The area I have been looking at is Maine. I am working on creating a localized maximized food production to mitigate price issues cause by freight so the greenhouses I have considered have been everything from glorified sunrooms for urban gardening to large farm based facilities. The further North the project the more I love the walipini.

Warmer climate zone shift - instead of huge amount of external insulation of the whole house and additional external layer of soil some open-minded families living in cold climate have constructed greenhouse around whole house or build the house inside the greenhouse.
Have you been considering such option? - you already have such plan for double front domes.

Water tanks should be insulated as well, especially in cold climates. Putting the tank inside the home envelope reduces the amount of insulation you need. The thermal battery properties of the water are similar to earth, especially wet earth, so it makes more sense to me to bury the tank with the house, just like is done in warmer climates, to reduce the likelihood of freezing and cracking the tank/s.

    • @richardburgess399
      @richardburgess399 4 роки тому +1

I think what he is saying is that water has an extremely high heat capacity, thus, when the mass at the back of the wall is gaining heat during the day the water tank is robbing some of that heat, then at the end of the day the heat is released in all directions of the water tank (mostly upward into the mount of dirt behind the living area, and escaping into the atmosphere) instead of directly into the house.

i don't understand why you just don't put the oven between the house and the water tank... it could warm the water tank too....

I love the concept of the earthships, just seems smart and self sufficient, but…..don’t love the roundy, wonky, hippie-dippie aesthetics of them. I have worked in 1970s “let’s make rooms round” buildings, and there is a reason most rooms are nice squares.

9:30 I'm very curious to know your reference for theses numbers.
I'm living in Canada and you seem way too optimistic on how hot the ground really is.
Typically, it is between 4*C to 8*C for the moist ground.
The "Russian oven" or the rocket stove + water piping is not required if you use a passive solar home with LEED insulation (and no more daily fire required for the life of the house).
Your design is gorgeous, but you need to be more serious if you want to avoid to be sued by sad customers!

@@AloshaLynov Think again... If you are selling your "expertise" and someone is using it and loose money because of your mistakes you can be liable. Maybe consider a small legal disclaimer in your book would cover your ass. But over all, I still think you need to get educated on cold country building a little more.
I might sound rude, but honestly I wish you the best.
