  • This was a brand new unused boxed Mamod Steam Train Set was bought from Hattons in 1980 and was never used. Today was its first steam up. The first few times produced nothing but water from the cylinders but as she warmed up the loco worked faultlessly

This is i'd say one of the most eye appealing locomotives Mamod as made.

I think it's great that although its from 1980, its not cherished as an old man's collective item, it has been taken out of the box, and played with. Like it was meant to be! Brilliant!

He'd have been better off selling it as a mint example and using the money to buy something a lot better, such as a Roundhouse Millie.

@@donaldasayers I assume you work for Roundhouse? Whats better? If someone wants and enjoys one of these loco's so be it we dont need to have the 'best'??

      @@nosbig11 Nope, I'm a retired teacher.
I have Mamod and I have Accucraft and Roundhouse.
I turned my pigs-ear of a Mamod loco into something that is gas fired and reliable, but there's precious little mamod left and it cost more to do than the price of a second hand Millie. Had it not been fun to do I would not have bothered.
My point being that a Millie is more fun and more reliable than the old style Mamods. Why struggle with a Mamod?

@@donaldasayers this chap took the time and made the effort to share something he appears to be chuffed about and all some people can do is criticise or offer smug comments. So what if other brands/ models are technically better. Don't pour 'water' over someone else's enjoyment just because you can. As enthusiasts of a fairly niche hobby i think we all need to be a bit more supportive. 😎. BTW i run contraptions made from Meccano parts and Mamod stationary steam engines around a 45mm track and have a whale of a time. Cheers.

I have one of these, and extra track. I must run it soon! And I like that you run it indoors 👍

I run mine on 1950,s tin O gauge track, as used with Hornby clockwork O gauge trains, it's very very cheap, no need to pay loads for it, also, when I ran it in the garden one summer, I Used 8mm x 8mm wood, pinned to 100x50 timbers at the correct gauge, perfect, cost me £8 for 40ft of track'!!

When you think about it, these things were meant to be run and played with, so I'm glad this one is being run and enjoyed.
Although I have more complicated live steam engines, I'd love to have one of these to play with just for fun, for they do run well.

    • @caroleast9636

They can run well…but the build quality is VERY variable. They could take quite a bit of work to even get to work properly. That can be disappointing…or a steep part of the learning curve into the fascinating hobby of small steamers 3:06

    • @Shipwright1918

Know what you mean. In the years since I made my last comment, I've acquired an MSS version of one of these as a kit, and in the time since I built it I've only recently got it to steam and run after many tries.
Going to try and fit a better burner at some point, the wind tends to snuff out the fire using solid fuel.

I have two of these sitting on the shelf in my office. Bought them on a trip to London while I was living in France in 1982. Neat little engines. I tried running them on 0 gauge track but there's not enough radius on the wheel flanges to keep them on the track in a curve. Maybe they've fixed that?

    • @DarrensVlog
      @DarrensVlog  5 років тому +1

They are little pocket rockets difficult to control a steady speed on the curves. I guess peco track isnt suitable. Prob the LGB track would be better

They are unreliable, very hard to control and short lived; the first thing to go will be the stupid plastic window for the water level. There is a long history of "Mamodification" and a cottage industry grew up to improve them.
In their latest versions Mamod had addressed most of these issues, they now have a proper sight tube, in line lubricator, silver soldered boiler, butane gas firing and O-ring pistons. They are also a lot more expensive, nudging the price of much more capable offerings such as the Basic range from Roundhouse.
If you inherit one of these unfired in it's box, leave it that way, else polish it and put in on the shelf where it belongs.
