- By far one of the most exceptional performances ever witnessed on stage. Truly a lost diamond.
Anthony Newley (24 September 1931 - 14 April 1999) was an English actor, singer and songwriter. Newley achieved success as a performer in such diverse fields as rock and roll and stage and screen acting. As a recording artist he enjoyed a dozen Top 40 entries on the UK Singles Chart between 1959 and 1962, including two number one hits. With songwriting partner Leslie Bricusse, Newley penned "Feeling Good", which was popularised by Nina Simone and covered by many other popular artists; as well as the title song of 1964 film Goldfinger (along with John Barry). Bricusse and Newley received an Academy Award nomination for the film score of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971).

Enjoy!
I am over 60 and this is the first time I heard of him, boy do I need to get out more, but I am truly blessed to watch this.
Me too! ...LOL, Don't feel bad!
@@romainejayne1811 Where have you been!!!!!!!!!!! bux
I'm 59 and counting.. I remember him probably on the Johnny Carson tv show... Ta dam dam
Can you believe it: I saw this performance on Broadway. Some folk thought that after "Stop the World", it was a letdown; this show was with Cyril Richard (Captain Hook!!).. Yes, it was utterly overwhelming,
Remember, they didn't mike in those days, and I was third balcony-- could they project! I still have chills. There is NOTHING like being there in their presence and feeling the vibrations of the voice through your whole body.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Anthony wrote this beautiful piece of music along with Leslie Bricusse. To see and hear him perform his own composition is simply a legendary moment.
Newley was under appreciated as a songwriter, director, writer, but no one could deny his talent and power as a theatrical performer. There has never been anyone quite one like him. him
There is a clip of him and another great singer Sammy Davis jnr doing a melody of his and Leslie Bricusse songs.
Absolutely correct.
I am in tears
Reminds me of watching Charles Aznavour perform La Boheme 1965.
I miss this kind of talent. The passion, emotion. One of a kind.
I concur a one off unique sound
It's the writing.
I love Live theater, but nothing for a long time, comes close.
Agree, agree...
@@kennethridout7471 Yeh,, a horrible sound.
Anthony Newley's Greatest Performance 0641am 20.7.23 buster keaton sings the blues...
Anthony Newley was not the very best singer, in the traditional sense (although I have heard much worse), but he was an original in every sense of the word. No one else sang, or delivered a song, like he did or acted like he did when he sang. He certainly made you remember him with every performance he gave. And THAT is my definition of a great performer.
Amen!
Unique
Newley is off the scale with this performance. The intensity, the shading, the emotion and control. It’s supercharged. Genius writer and performer.
Agree 100%.
Newley performed 'Roar' over 1000 times.. Breaks my heart every time.
You just know that David Bowie felt this performance in his bones.
No question about it!
Thank You, I love learning new things about David Bowie.
I love learning about my favorite artists and what inspires their music. I never knew about the Anthony Newley, David Bowie connection. Great stuff.
Every does.
And rightly so.
I guess Mickael Jackson felt it too! 😊
@@vlalepit06 Sammy davis jr, its unclear who borrowed from who
I remember seeing this live and was absolutely stunned at the emotional power of this performance!
I feel sorry for the people who decided to give this a thumbs down. If this can't touch you, I don't know what performance can.
That's where you've chosen to focus.
@@jamesmcinnis208 Point taken. Well put.
Well said
😆
Honestly this performance ranks with the greatest ever, everything about this was wonderful, his little nuances and vocal painting is as brave as it is exceptional.
Watch in awe
I so agree Ron!
Absolutely agree....this performance is one of the best...EVER
I agree with you. It’s every bit of emotional marrow exuding as he sings...it’s exhausting watching this level of beauty.
Mr Newley has written so many beautiful songs along with Leslie Bricusse, but this one is absolutely outstanding and the performance, interpretation and emotion has brought me to tears. Vocally amazing and expressive beyond measure. Such a great, talented man in every way and he and his music will live on for ever. As someone else has written - an absolute master class in every way.
Absolutely true..David Bowie loved his voice.. and tried to emulate his amazing tone x I absolutely love this performance...happy memories xx
Never was a Bowie follower. Know his music, so the 'Newley' reference is lost on me
Anthony Newley was a big influence on Davie Bowie. You can really see why. Fantastic clip - thanks for posting.
Watch this before bed, almost every night. The consumate and beautiful performance ever. Loved his performances since i was 14, i am 71 now. Thank you Sir Anthony!
Incredible performance, using every sinew of his being to deliver this song. A masterclass for any aspiring performer. And oh boy, what a stunning emotive voice. Utterly beautiful.
Anthony Newley's Greatest Performance 0640am 20.7.23 which music hall act was he trying to emulate?
I can understand Bowies love of him beautifully exaggerated the man is a legend impulsive a true original and brave with it a real trooper ❤🤴🃏
Such an endearing, performane. What a great talent Anthony Newley was.
A Masterful Genius!!! That clip was from the Ed Sullivan show, and yet Newley wasn't merely content to sing it as most performers would----he thrust the totality of his artistry into the performance : the facial expressions, the movement of the hands, the gait----to really convince you of the poor hapless underdog character in "The Roar of the Greasepaint." I saw him years later in a revue on Broadway, and he entered the stage acrobatically dancing----a COMPLETE performer.
He's definitely in command of the stage with brilliant, authentic, energy, and talent.
In his concert at monte carlo he does the standard version and the goes into a disco version.
My favourite ever artist.
Exactly right.
Newley's theatricality blows everyonelse away.
Believe he performed this over 1000 times on stage..
Knocks me out every time.
Very well put. I just watched an interview with the late Leslie Bricusse, who said he preferred to write songs for shows as opposed to just "songs." Songs for shows, he explained, have a purpose, such as character development, or are part of a larger context in advancing the story. You can see what he meant if you compare this clip with the song performed by "mere singers" - Newley performs completely in character, which emphasizes the sadness and pain behind the song.
Anthony Newley so brilliant on stage turning his masterful timeless classic "Who Can I Turn To" in to a deeply soulful tour-de-force, luckily experienced the Legendary Iconic performer in concert early 70's and he was magical and hauntingly brilliant to experience, remember thrilling audience giving lots of standing ovations, he deserved every one of them!
Man, I am jealous - wish I could have seen the man.
Been listening to this for years. It's my go to song whenever I'm feeling defeated, lonely, hurt, broken etc. It gives me strength. Xo
Claire, this was the best of th best of what this song does.
This had to have been one of the most outstanding performances in all of theater history! What a treasure it must have been to see it live!
Mr. Newley represents a wonderful part of my musical life of performing.
No/One like him today, Anthony Newley was a force unto himself, Anthony Newley & Leslie Bricusse, brought alive the West End back in the 60s, no-one like them today though, mores the pity.
I listen to this beautiful Prayer often.
Eloquent. Anthony Newley serves each lyric clearly, as he asks ...
I've listened to Sammy Davis Jr's version..Matt Monroe..& others.
No one else so honestly delivers the message. Beautiful song.
Jacko, Bowie, Alex Harvey, etc, etc, they all have been influenced by the Late Great Anthony Newley. A master performer that we may never see the likes of again. R. I. P.
I've watched this performance countless times. Anthony Newley's voice has entranced me since seeing 'The Roar of the Greasepaint, smell of the crowd.' as a boy.
I'm 70 now. I try to sing this Prayer..
What a performance.
Rest in Peace Sir. Be Blessed
Absolutely amazing talent
Love this man. Wish I'd been born earlier ❤️
A beautiful talent! So missed
This nugget of gold is Iconic Tony Newley. I wish I had been old enough to be in the audience when he performed this play. I was only 8 years old. But I grew up enjoying this amazing song. Wherever you found this clip, it is amazing. Thanks so much for posting it here for fans like me
One of the most exceptional performances I’ve ever seen - this is a masterpiece!
Pure brilliance
A real gem of a performance. Precious, just precious!
A compression of the lambent passion of lust with the pureness of an idealistic love for the self, the other and a hopeful future together. Perfection.
Love him or hate him, he was so arresting as a performer. I love the unapologetic dynamism of his performance in this . Of its time maybe, but fabulous...
Nothing this brilliant is out of it's time
@@reneebourg-giarrusso161 Agree, it's timeless...that's why we bother to listen now, and will continue to listen...
Stunning!! A hauntingly beautiful song.R.I.P. Mr.Anthony Newley🌫️🌫️

his total genius encapsulated in this performance
He was probably the most all round versatile and talented artist of our generation. He was totally unique. Apart from his acting, singing and song writing partnership with another all time great, Leslie Bricusse, he was also the author of the greatest one liner and most meaningful title of all time..."Stop the world, I want to get off" which is more apt today than ever before!
Sammy Davis Jr also a phenomenal all round entertainer did him proud with his version of all his songs.
Together, they were awesome!!!
May they both rest in peace!!!
An inspiration for David Bowie - and it definitely shows here.
I love the close ups, I could look at his face for hours.... the double ending of that song!
He’s gorgeous... magical 💗
What a talent this man had
Tremendously life-changing for me. This performance is beyond words. What an incredibly moving interpretation of his own composition.
One of the GREATEST Performances ever by the late and GREAT Anthony Newley! They don’t make them like that anymore...
A great thrilling performer, never to be forgotten and missed so much. RIP Mr. Newley, we love you!!!!!!
Genius. The shoulders of giants.
Truly one of a kind! A great one of a kind!
What a great voice!
Beautiful,
They say David Bowie was greatly influenced by Newley which just goes to show how brilliant Bowie was in choosing who to be influenced by!
Bravo!
For us Brits this is Norman Wisdom. Look at the mannerisms, the movements & the pathos. The sad little man with the best laugh ever! 🤗🕺
I think Norman Wisdom was in the original British production of "Roar of the Greasepaint," but it never made it to the West End. There's no British cast album but Norman Wisdom (who would have been great) recorded the song.
What a beautiful, rare talent
I have always loved Anthony Newley and his beautiful music, but I've never heard anything as good as this performance. I can't stop watching it. Thank you for posting it.
I can't stop watching. Masterful, soulfull. Thank you Anthony!
Me too. I've watched at least 20 times
I find it grating.
Loved him as the Artful Dodger in the 1948 movie "Oliver Twist" !
Such a cute little man.🙂
That's how to deliver a song. Thank you Mr Newley.
Fabulous
bowie loved him
Indeed...
yes, he did. AN was usually a part of our "deep" listening sessions, for both of us.
That's why I'm here, haha!
Michael Jackson imo obviously as well studied the hands the hat the spotlight use. Such a moving performance.
Brilliant
Wonderful!!!
It's amazing performance 👏
I wish the new generation learn from the past how to write a song with words touch every movement of our soul 💙
Sobbing
The man was a marvel.
Sensational
What a brilliant performance 👏 can't stop watching it
Inside the cheeky little urchin...a world conquering superstar...That's how it's done, kids.....
Brilliant performance !!
I bet he was great to see on stage live
One of the truely great performances
This touches my heart
Amazed at how Bowie ripped this entire style for his career.
Did you get that from Finding Fame? Its a bit of a stretch thou
I wouldn't say that. Sure, Bowie was influenced by him but everyone's influenced by the artists that came before. If you listen to Bowie's earlier albums like "Hunky Dory", he's not really singing in that style at all.
Bowie himself said he used to copy Newley's singing voice early on, but I wouldn't say his entire career is based on him...Bowie used many voices
Uh oh we better sue Brandon Flowers for ripping off Ric Ocasek and Prince for ripping off Little Richard!
@Devin Terrio: The singers you mention don't have such a distinctive voice as Anthony Newley or Bowie. No one else has ever sounded like them. If Anthony Newley's music was still being played when Bowie was having hits the comparison would've been made publicly.
What a stunning...poignant....performance....so unique....Wow....blown away!....Valerie Craft Kitover
This guy= AMAZING.
Great to see real theater.
*Wonderful Genius - will not be forgotten*
POWERFUL ... POWERFUL ... A Superb Performance.
He was a truly original EXCEPTIONAL TALENT .. adored him since I was 2 years old xxxx
Simply beautiful.
Fantastic
Wow!
Nobody now can come close to matching this level of artistry.
Just my opinion , Tony was one of the greats , one of the select few who give more than they take and who's influence can never be over estimated . His unique performances and wonderful songs will live on and on .
❤as good as it gets
A 1960 Sammy Davis Jr brought me here in 2021 😃
Wonderful. Thank you for uploading
thats what you call heart
I love this song Sammy Davis Jr did a great version but Anthony Newley is the 👌 greatest
It was said that Sammy Davis, consummate singer, dancer and actor, was jealous of the talents of only two people - Frank Sinatra and Anthony Newley. Sammy could do everything but write songs, and the Newley/Briccuse songs were among his favorites, as their dramatic power was perfect for Sammy's style.
AMAZING!!!
Stage singing live is a pure talent, i watched this collaborated with Barbra also in youtube
I agree! Nothing compares to live theater music!
Priceless 👍💖🏆
a great all round entertainer
Mind blown!
This was beautiful, amazing, and powerful. Loved it 🤍
