THANK YOU. I’d been reading some sample scripts and they were so badly written I was already thinking of how I could fix them. What a relief to hear your words about NOT using them:))
A someone who has his first commercial airing on the radio (I'm a super big deal! Haha!) I totally agree. The only thing I'd add is refrain from listening to them first as you're more likely to try to replicate the voice actor rather than do it your way. If you can find the copy without hearing it, you're much better off creating your own style.
Great point! I tried recreating a commercial, trying to sound like the person (just for personal practice), and played it to my hubby to get feedback on. He never heard the original, just "mine." He made a cringe face and politely said that it was not my best work and he liked all my other stuff much better. What this proved is that you want to sound like you. Your voice, whatever it sounds like, is awesome (even though it may not sound like it to you)! Put your style, pizazz, and heart into it, and someone will like it! For example, I randomly found out that students liked my voice because I sounded like a "teacher," so now I do e-learning voiceovers for online math courses. Have fun with it! 😃
Bill I've been following you on youtube for a number of years. This tip by far has been the most useful and has helped my voice over practice greatly. Keep up the great work!
Hey Bill, I am exploring the VO industry and have been following your channel from quite some time now. First of all thank you for making so informational videos and putting up all the effort to do so. This video in particular was indeed very helpful...great advice!! Thanks a lot and Namastey from India 💐🙏
I never really utilized the scripts you are referring to often... On occasion I would pull one up, after watching this, I went and looked at a few again. Wow, you could not be more right... Glad they were not my sole source of reference. And now I am addicted to ISPOT. :)
Wide Awake! Productions So it is completely legal to use the text of another in your own demo? Do you have to have a disclaimer in your demo at the end or beginning stating that the scripts source or otherwise?
😂 I was just about to look up scripts to make my demo, not for practice. Then this video pops up! Hilarious! You saved me. Makes perfeft sense! Where do I find content for making a demo without copyright issues? I just did a movie trailer narrator that I came up with on my own, I did the "EA Sports" tag line and batman voice. If you could check it out and let me know how I did, I would really appreciate it! My newest short and my first time doing voice-over. I feel like the Fifine mic isn’t giving me the bass that I need because it's USB. Let me know, thanks man!
Thank you Bill. Hmm I have practice scripts from other vo teachers. Not sure (I) can always tell the difference. Is it ok to use real scripts to practice and say post on Fiverr if it's good? My understanding is that it's ok because you're not selling the script but demonstrating what you can do.
Hey Bill! In the same line as @ballingerFilms' question below, could we face any possible copyright issues by taking a real product commercial and using it as our own material without consent from the owning company? Thanks!
@@D.Bunker So I'm a bit screwed then. I've had 2 commercial demos done by transcribing a Canadian beer commercial; One is energetic and powerful, the other laid back and personable. I was told by several sources that it's fine to use them as they're just demos and not intended to be seen as you presenting yourself as having worked for said companies, but I also get conflicting reports from others.
@@ghoxxalla I think you have nothing to worry about. You are not profiting directly from the use of the scripts. If worse comes to worse, in the very, very remote chance you are ordered to stop using them, then you can remove them and make new demos.
@@misterdrummings That's true. I believe your chops are what represent you, not what big names you drop so long as you have the skill to sell whatever it is, you can use whatever best fits your type. I do fear clients might think I actually worked on such and so either hire me on the "fame" aspect or don't bother because they might think I'm too expensive. I considered putting a disclaimer on my website once I get it running, but maybe I shouldn't bother.
@@ghoxxalla I did a similar thing as I transcribed actual commercials for my self-produced commercial demo. I've decided at this early stage to leave it as is as as I am not making claims that "these are examples of my work." When I update my demo I'll use edited scripts.
Okay, cool. I'm not a copy talent, I'm a voice over talent. For all I care my demos could just be the phone book in different inflections. If you like my voice hire it for your professional science copy used to sell. I want no part of those tactics or industry. You're demoing my voice, not my writing skills. If my voice and skills can't make the most boring and poorly written script interesting.... Just my irrelevant two cents.

I just recorded a demo with scripts I got exclusively from ispot.tv, great resource. Thanks as always Bill
so, how do you ge the script for these ads??

Thank you! I appreciate that advice. I need a script for class this week. Now I know where to get it.
Thank you for that! Great advice!!
Bill, Thanks for helping me out so much. This is another great tip! Liam Smith
Genius videos pal, really well explained thank you ❤
I've been told twice not to do real scripts that you weren't hired to do...
I need to redo this then and try ispot. Thanks!
@@D.Bunker yes. I substitute all brands with my own made up company/product names for that.
Great analogy, Bill. Soccer ball and broom. I’m going to use this in conversations for many things.

Hello Bill, great videos. Do you take out the product name for your demo with the real commercials, or can you leave it in?
I returned the Fifine mic and bought the Shure MV7X XLR mic instead. It's an investment after all. How is this mic for VO?
Thanks for dropping a great resource!
Great information, brother. Down to earth and packed with the practical good stuff. Thanks!
Nice

What if you don't have any experience yet and you want to do a demo reel? Can you use these real scripts for real products or services for your demo?
What about scripts for commercials that are really popular? Are those not appropriate because they can be recognized easily?
You're the BEST!
Awesome info!
Is it "OK' to also take the scripts that are on the various VO Blueprint sessions that you present to use as Practice Scripts?

Are you on spotify? I'm learning while i listen....your voice suits my preference
Hi Travis! I'm not, but I appreciate that!
what about animation or games' scripts? How to find them?
Going to be in san diego someday?
I would love to get in touch with you
I was also misinformed that I couldn't use real scripts written by a copy writer or else I could be sued for copyright or something.

Those practice scripts also may be way out of date. Trends in marketing are always evolving and our demos and scripts need to reflect that evolution.
Sorry, don't 100% agree. It is your voice and how well you deliver the message, no matter the content. My opinion.

That would actually be fun to do! Read the phonebook! Haha!
You know the ones, the one about air, the one about alzheimers, and joining the Barr Association. Poorly written and rhythm-less.
