Three things.
1. In the manga, there's this thing called cover stories. Oda would use the cover of chapters as panels of simple stories about what happened to various characters after we left them. Two of those cover stories were adapted into the anime - Buggy's story of how he reunited with his crew and body and met Gaimon and Alvida, and Koby and Helmeppo joining the Marines together. Those weren't as high-rated as the main story, though, so they stopped adapting the cover stories, but by this point in the series there were two others. One for Hatchan (the octopus swordsman from Arlong's crew), and one for Jango the hypnotist. That cover story explained how he and Fullbody became besties and Jango joined the Marines (beeteedubs, you were right; Fullbody is the same guy who futilely tried to impress his date when Sanji was his waiter).
2. The ending montage of Alabasta featured everyone that anime viewers had met from the country, including characters from filler episodes you'd skipped. The dudes with the weird hats were from filler.
3. Now that you've finished Alabasta, if you'd like, you can check out Shokugeki no Sanji. Written by the author of Food Wars (Shokugeki no Soma), it's basically Food Wars episodes but with Sanji as the main character. Right now, there are three chapters: one that takes place at the Baratie while Sanji is working there, one that's set on the Going Merry some time between Loguetown and Reverse Mountain, and one that takes place during the End Of Alabasta feast. Obviously, it's not required reading, but it's pretty fun extra content, and tbh, you both seem like the type who'd enjoy Food Wars-esque content.
Vivi's dream was always to protect Alabasta, so it's fitting that she's staying behind.

I'm sure you've been told over a dozen times already, but the characters you didn't recognize were *not* the Blackbeard pirates, but the Barbar Pirates, who were anime-only (re: filler) characters.
Zoro is the person Robin has the worst grasp on so she tried basic seduction but that didn't really work. In the end he's the only one with the sense to remain suspicious.
Please, never read the title cards. It's usually fine, but sometimes, especially later down the line, they just put in massive spoilers. Some of the titles later on are literally like "Tragedy! All of the Straw Hats were brutally murdered with a crowbar!"

Bounties in One Piece are not a great way to power scale people. Some people have higher bounties because they are pure evil, not necessarily strong. Others are strong but their bounties are low because they might have not done much. The warlords' bounties are frozen as soon as they become a warlord and do not go up as they get stronger since they cannot be claimed anymore anyways.
I mean it an all around calculation of how dangerous the person is taking into account their strength, alliances, crew count and strength, achievement and crew's achievement, that's why captains usually have a higher bounty than crewmates like what happened to Luffy and Zoro. Zoro has way more experience and more achievements but he is the first mate of luffy so he got a lower bounty.

I hope you guys never forget that ending song that was played in the episode. In one of the 1000s episodes, there will be an important scene where it will be played again and it will give you 100x the feels when you recognize that it was the first ending song playing.
I just want to explain what was probably the reason why Luffys bounty was so „small“ after beating crocodile etc. You have to remember who makes the Bounties. It’s the marines. Smoker did tell them that the ones who beat Croc and his org were the Strawhats. But they wanted to cover that up since it’s a big thing to take down a warlord (on top of that, one that was manipulating a very well known country). Because of that they couldn’t just give Luffy 2 or 300 mil, cause then the public would be like: hold on why they give this guy so much? He didn’t even do anything etc. But also Oda is the one that decides the bounty. And he LOVES giving numbers significance. So a clean 100 mil is like a cool milestone for the mc. And Zoro gets Luffys old bounty.
Jango and Fullbody teaming up was another cover arc, like Buggy getting his crew back together. It just never got put in the anime.
There is a reason Pell was kept alive , despite the obvious sacrifice . He was supposed to be dead , but story happened around 9/11 , so the author didn't want such a tragic end to a bombing .
Fun fact: Pell survived the explosion because this arc was written around 9/11, and Oda thought it would be in bad taste to have a bird die in an explosion for his country.
That has never been confirmed but that is a likely reason why

There was a mini arc in the manga that explains the Jango and Fullbody thing. Here's a condensed version. The Black Cat Pirates left Jango behind, so he lived like a bum for a while. Then he entered a dance contest on Mirror Ball Island where he met Fullbody and they became best friends. Jango saved Fullbody from some random pirates, Fullbody called in some favors to get Jango pardoned, on the condition that he take a demotion, and once his record was cleared, Jango joined the Marines so he and Fullbody could keep hanging out. Simple as that.
Just wanna say I'm so excited for you guys. Watching One Piece for the first time is such an experience

Yeah, about Pell... It might be strange that Pell survived such explosion, and actually Oda planned him to be dead at that moment, but around the time the chapter's manga is released in Japan, the 9/11 Tragedy happened, and Oda changed Pell's fate on the following chapter making him survive as a form of giving respect to the victims of 9/11
For In-Universe explanation, it might sounds like BS, but they 'kinda' explain the Zoan's Devil fruit way down the chapter.

They explained that unlike other two devil fruit type (Logia and Paramecia) Zoan devil fruit has property where it amplify the physical prowess (Strength, Endurance, Stamina, etc) of the users, and the stronger the user's physique the more power they get, that's why lots of Zoan-type Devil Fruit users have survived many attack that can be considered fatal (For example, aside of Pell surviving the explosion, Dalton survived being shot through the chest with three thick arrow and buried under avalanche for hours)
Biggest downside of 'the return of Pell' was, the moment he landed on the clock tower and you get that small emotional backstory with kid Vivi and Pell wich was really great... And realy prepared you as a reader/watcher for his death at that time.
And than... It meant nothing anymore after he returned....

Thats actually some BS the western fan base came up with and they keep spreading this misinformation. For jerking off to their egoocentric self-importance, I guess. I've looked it up in Japanese and couldn't find anything about it. To this day there's no real reason aside from several theories of Pell having amazing zoan abilities to outrun things. Japan is so disconnected and oblivious to the rest of the world that there's no way anyone will even remotely care about 9/11 (or should I say, 11/9q). Most won't even know what you're talking about if you mention it.

There is indeed a bunch of filler after alabasta, it’s called the rainbow mist arc and imo it’s not very good. One of the reasons that one piece filler is often bad is because Eiichiro Oda has such a unique style, you can tell when it’s not him. It’s the same for the movies prior to ‘Strong World’, a few of them are good (film 6, dead end adventure, karakuri castle) but you can tell that oda wasn’t involved. Lol it’s like the 4th season of ‘community’

In regards to Pell surviving: I don't think we've ever gotten a concrete answer as to how he managed to survive that massive explosion.
My personal theory/headcanon? Zoan Fruit users are even tougher than baseline humans in One Piece; combine that with Pell being in his falcon form, and I theorize that he was able to 'ride' the shockwave of the blast, and his Zoan toughness enabled him to BARELY survive, as opposed to being vaporized.

You're right that Mr. 2 was the only one that didn't have a partner. However, they were given both male and female code names: Mr. 2 and Bon Clay. The latter is a mistrabslation of Bon Kurei, which is the Japanese Bon Festival holiday that's celebrated in August, thus fitting into the female code name pattern of being named after particular days of the week or holidays. And this is fitting as Mr. 2 Bon Clay is an okama (translated as "queer") and thus is gender non-binary.

I only in 740+ epsode, but i think i only hear luffy and the crew calling vivi nakama and not tomodachi, luffy calls his crew nakama, but if only friends just tomodachi, like coby, etc
A decade since I first saw this episode and I'm still mad about Pell. He was literally holding the bomb. Oda's worst flaw is his unwillingness to commit to killing characters outside of backstories. Though to this day Pell is the worst case. It makes no sense and Pell being alive doesn't contribute anything to the story, it just takes away from not just his sacrifice but the threat the bomb represented. Evidentially everyone in a 5 KM radius would have been fine cause Pell was friggen' holding it and got away okay.
On a more positive note I have a painting of the Straw Hats lined up with the X's on their arms because I love that scene so much.

Sure even by then , there are plenty of fodders that should be dead ( the way Robin uses clutches lol , so many should be either paraplegic or dead) , but who cares about them ? Oda doesn't like killing characters unless to progress the story, so when it actually happens it matters and hits hard

Said it on the last one and I'll say it again, Pell's fakeout death is still the worst in the whole series. Legitimately the only long-standing issue I have with Alabasta which is otherwise still in my top 5 arcs.
On Luffy's bounty: the government doesn't want people to know that he's the one who beat Crocodile, so they are keeping it down on purpose. Too big of an increase would have been suspicious.

It's worth mentioning that Luffy's bounty massively underrepresents his actual strength and notoriety for a huge chunk of the series. Only very recently in the manga has his bounty began to accurately reflect his power.
Aside from that, it's time to say goodbye to Alabasta. Even 800+ chapters later this is still one of my favourite One Piece arcs. The Alabasta saga as a whole is such a lovely story and the farewell with Vivi is a beautiful moment. We also get to see Bon Clay's true colours as well, one of my favourite characters in the whole series.
Its been a blast reexperiencing this arc with you guys. Been a couple years since I've read it, so this was a really enjoyable refresher. Thank you for all the reactions you guys. I know you're already mostly through Skypeia on patreon, so on excited to the experience the sky Island saga with you two as well!

When you think about it, the worst thing Robin did as an antagonist to the straw hats is just when she trolled Vivi. She saved them too, she didn't report the existence of Sanji even if she knew.
That's not it. She was in there for 10+years in baroque works, still wasn't hinted at being sympathetic to the rebellion, broke pell's back, when he tried to save vivi from her.......... But oda threw all of that out for some reason and it now says she's a main character.

Until 2016, with only two canon scenes pre-timeskip, it kind of WAS the end of it. I though that vivi would get more scenes but I was dead wrong.
Bon Clay started of extremely annoying and eventually turned into one of the most beloved characters in all of One Piece.
