I discovered this song, and France Gall, only recently, and have been taken by it's wonderful musicality. It certainly has an 'International/French' character, with upbeat vocals by France Gall, wonderful instrumentation, and a production that marries it all together so well. The video compliments the music with both great shots of France, layered over wonderful imagery that incites the imagination to the people, places and emotions that the song is trying to capture. The opening with cowbell and then deep bass chords catches our attention that something special is about to happen. The vocals are upbeat throughout, and appreciated by everyone, even a non-French speaker like myself. The addition of horns is like a climax, where the spirit and message of the song hits home, and is reinforced by them. Apparently this song was popular when it came out in many primarily French-speaking markets, like our province of Quebec. However, I feel it could have gained popularity in many English speaking ones too. R.I.P France Gall. You are deeply missed.
Ella Fitzgerald was the subject of the song and a play on words 'Ella Has It' - 'Ella Elle L'a'. France Gall was also a part of the Ye-Ye singers from the early 60's with a number of hits. Later she had numerous 80's hits and there so many memorable great french songs by many artists at this time. For many this song is a throw back to a special time.
there are so many France Gall songs over the decades in differents styles which are really good, but sadly get slowly forgotten with the time. R.I.P France Gall
France Gall started aged just 16 with the wave of yéyé (yay-yay) singers in 60s France but she went on for over 30 years as a vocalist and even came back as a producer shortly before her death in 2018. Her most successful decade was actually the 80s and Ella, Elle l’a (dedicated to her all-time idol Ella Fitzgerald) is her at her best thanks to her fruitful collaboration with her composer/producer husband Michel Berger.
Yes! I was on a school exchange in Germany when this came out and we all loved it as it played on the coach radio. I had it as my request at my wedding reception 8 years ago and it was the final song of the night! Love it!!
I clicked just out of curiosity and frankly I'm amazed that you know this song ! I have no comment to make on what you say. It's perfect. And, by the way, I found your analysis relevant.
She began with Serge Gainsbourg writing for her and later married Michel Berger, they were the French power couple songwise, popular from US college radios to Germany, Russia or Japan !

Hi Johnny, good morning. Yéyé (pronounced yesyes, without the s) is a typically French expression of the 60s. The singers of that time reinterpreted English rock hits, in which we heard a lot of "yeah ... yeah ....". Critics made fun of these singers by calling them the "yéyés".
'' Ella (Fitzerald), she have it'', that's the exact translation with a french game of word. This song released in 1988 (from the bestseller album ''Babacar''), was actually a tribute to Ella, and wrote by the greatest french composer, Michel Berger, which was the France Gall's husband. He was a famous singer too. He died in 1992 by heart attack. You know many famous songs from him (SOS, covered by Dimash, The World is Stone, covered by Cyndi Lauper, Ziggy by Celine Dion). He wrote two great Musicals (Starmania and Jimmy). France and Michel are a part of France history of music. Michel Berger wrote hundreds of heartwarming songs, you could be touched by many of them (sing by France Gall, Johnny Hallyday of by himself). France was the bigest female star in France, since 1974 and 1992. Mylene Farmer took over.
I recommend a Spanish singer, her name is Diana Navarro. She is a very versatile singer singing different musical styles with an incredible melismas and a very personal voice. The song is " El perdón " greetings
