I have a fear of underwater structures, especially inlet pipes, and recognising this as likely one made me anxious watching the latter half. Accidentally falling off the board and getting sucked into an inlet pipe would be a horrible way to go, with bonus points for mentally scarring everyone that would have to clean you out of it. I know that the current probably isn't that strong and you'd have to dive down to get sucked in, not to mention that you're obviously fine, but watching you unknowingly approach it, read the danger signs and proceed to approach closer, still was a bit like watching the lead-up to the first casualty in a horror movie.
That's the Lough Neagh to Belfast water mains inlet pipe. Goes to shore at Dunore point, then to Hyde park in Mullusk. Goes right along Aldgerove,s runway. Then into Mullusk. Best to stear clear of the Area. If you get Southerly winds on the lough you will see why. Short choppy waves frequency is away short than sea waves. Safer area is to go Western routes, old torpedo platform, Shane's Castle, Cranfield direction. Heading for Toomebridge. Safer shoreline.
Comedy gold if you’d continued to pull on the rope only to find it was the plug for the loch. “Might as well walk back to shore now there’s no water” 😂
Great adventure! I bought a second-hand RED board from a SUP adventure shop that was replacing all its gear-the board was only 1 year old, looks new and I have had some great times out on lakes and rivers. Fair play to you for being able to get your board packed back into the large bag it came with - something I have never been able to do!!🙄
Nice one Stephen. Haha. that's a typical explanation of things in Northern Ireland. Something that somebody made to pump something from somewhere to somewhere else.
I hope you tell your good lady and half a dozen relatives/friends where you are going and when exactly you will be back before you go on these wee mystery exploration jaunts Stephen!!! They are greylag geese. Could the first flat structure have been a WW2 seaplane/boat mooring platform? Nice one. I enjoy a wee mystery.
😱I did imagine falling in the hole😱 I wonder how many things(Critters,People🤔) have fallen in the hole🤔 maybe your video will cause who owns it to cover that hole. Thanks for another video of Enjoyment!🎉🥳 Rochelle Bridgman, Michigan USA
in the middle of well-known Lough is a great place to hide NOTHING TO SEE HERE! it appears that some poor fisherman marked the lucky spot with his bleach bottle and brick and then never returned to fish again. great daytime excursion. thanks for taking us along.
😂That's my back yard Stephen. The metal platform behind Kettlebottom Island is a section of an old barge I believe. You can cycle to that spot too, there's a chairin a tree. I can sit there for ages.
@@StephenJReid yeah but it seemed like you moved it around a bit as well. i mean i know it has orbit mode and that stuff as well but do you switch between them while paddling?

Thanks Matt! 🙂 I’ve linked the pump in the description. One thing I’ve found is that it’s best to top up the charge before each trip. Seems to be faster with a full charge
Just as this posts starts, I would like to say that this looks very similar to the ones in the Thames Estuary, so probably from the Second Workd War? Aircraft observation platform, anti-aircraft platform?
I thought it was maybe something to do with the sand dredging initially. Think I’ve seen that in the distance before when I’ve been out at the Point. I was nervous for you when you pulled that brick 🧱 up 😂

That’s the much bigger platform near the Antrim Loughshore park. In WWII it was used for testing torpedos. It’s now a protected bird nesting site. This platform is nearly 3miles away from that one
Awesome little paddle adventure! Well done for resisting the urge to climb on! 😂 (also loving the drone shots! Did you launch from the SUP or have someone else film?)
I figure I shouldn’t do anything I don’t want other to copy 😂 can’t imagine my friend in the water service would be thrilled if I was encouraging people to go clambering over their property!
Stephen, i live beside this and have been out many time, ive photos of inside but dunno how to send you them, if you reply with an email address ill send them across
Wait…you didn’t go on the weird-stilted-structure-in-the-middle-of-the-loch?? It would be a Good wild camping spot for a future video. If you can get inside🤔

The trick is to get all the air out of it first. Although I admit it took me a few attempts the first couple of times. Red make quality kit
When did you do this video mate as the lough seems to have been now riddled with blue green algae very bad stuff
This was wayy back at start of summer before the algae appeared. Wouldn’t go near it atm. Huge disaster
Mad man, I hate lakes, give me the sea any day. Great film as usual
Why do you hate lakes?
@@StephenJReid i dunno, childhood thing maybe, id go in the sea any day first but lakes just seem more prehistoric #nessy

Do indeed! Ahh I wonder if that was what the first one was. Maybe. I’ve since wondered if maybe it’s a sunken barge. The water is only 5ft deep there
That was awesome! Such nice, calm water so you could paddleboard out that far!
Was a bit choppy on the way back, wind picked up. But amazing in morning! Did 6miles

Great adventure, I loving finding stuff like that. I am surprised it does not have more signs on it, but they may have blown/washed off.
Quite a few signs on but yeah I’d expected maybe some
Further out if it’s that dangerous.
Wow beautiful place sir 😲4:58 😍
Yup!
Excellent production once again, another mystery solved, on to the next one
Thanks John 🙂 planning on camping via paddleboard soon
Deffo a hammock spot I'd be using 👍👍👍
Not sure you appreciate the morning guano. Loads of birds were on it before I got there

I always heard that those strange flat platforms were observation platforms used during the war to monitor munitions testing.
From a distance it looked like one of those WW2 Sea Forts that you see of the southeast coast of England
Yeah it did, just a scale model! 😂

Can you look for a creature in the loch neagh because I found one with more like a zigzag in the water and I don’t know what it could be

The platform was a missile launch platform used during the Second World War a friend has told me. Apparently used for missiles and torpedo launches.
