    Tyrone, it's May 12, 2016 and i'm in Canada .....after looking at all the videos i tried to watch regarding wiring a single pole switch where the hot wire comes from the breaker, to an outlet, to a ceiling light, to my switch, i FINALLY have the answer on how to do the wiring when you do not receive power to the switch directly from the panel; that is, you receive power to your switch via an alternate route, one of them involving your ceiling light. You are careful, conscientious and above all, a great instructor. You choose your words determinedly and you speak as if you are teaching someone for the very first time, careful not to miss anything important. I needed this quality of instruction because i am encountering this for the very first time. Thank-you my friend!! We need more Tyrone on the internet!! I have subscribed to your channel, you are dynamite.

    I just recently re-wired an outlet that had three connections attached directly to a fluorescent light. I re-wired the connections so that they were connected to a separate junction box and then installed a new fixture that had its own separate connection also attached to the junction box along with a lighted switch. I COULD NOT HAVE DONE THIS WITHOUT YOUR VIDEOS... THANKS!

    I haven't left a comment on UA-cam yet, but I believe that your videos are extremely helpful. Just want to say thanks for the information and excellent explanations on the hows and whys things work. I need things to make sense. I refuse to move on if I don't understand, and especially in something as serious as electricity! Awesome videos!

    Excellent tutorial! Well explained in easy to understand language and style, giving various wiring options and making the concepts and reasons clear and easy to follow. Great balance of technical explanations for the laymen without being too "dumbed down". I've been able to successfully wire/rewire my home and install complete power and wiring for the new workshop I recently built in great part thanks to Tyrone's tutorial videos. HIGHLY recommend his instructional videos not just for complete newbies but even for those of us with a fair amount of electrical knowledge as a refresher and helping to clarity certain things. Thanks for taking the time to make and share these videos, Tyrone!

    I was asked to re-wire a trailer and I've never done anything like this before. I have been in the construction industry for years and I've worked side by side with the Sparkies. I have to say you make it very simple and safe. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to help me figure this stuff out. And after it's all done and I have a "certified electrian" come and inspect it, I will let you know the out come.
    Thanks again.

      +d3w4yn3 Being a rookie I am a little quick to describe anything I don't understand as bad wiring. When the truth is-of the three rooms I was installing fans only one was conveniently set up with a 4 wire system coming from the switch that made wiring the fan easy. The other two rooms were as Tyrone explained. I looked at the wiring coming from the light switch in these 2 rooms and my brain broke. I stared for an hour up there in the attic. THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT. THEY HAVE A BLACK HOT WIRE ON THE SAME CIRCUIT WITH A WHITE NEUTRAL. Ah but I remembered the teachings of his eminence Tyrone. When encountering a person who describes the white wire as neutral, walk away for he is full of shit. I tried to walk away from myself but failed. Tyrone tells us that this is technically not a wrong way to wire the house but I still don't know why they did it the way they did. So what was Tyrone's lesson? Was it "If it's white it ain't right" or was it that there are many ways to wire lighting and some cases whitey is a hottie.

    Thank you so much Tyrone! This is the first time i've ever commented on a video simply because of you paying it forward. :) Great explanation and was really easy for DIY girl like me to understand for the most part.
    I probably have watched this video more than a dozen times to connect the wiring in my home recording music studio. I have 2 single pole switches. I've finally managed to connect the first two light fixtures to one of the switches (your explanation of the white wire being "hot" switch was KEY!). The issue I can not for the life of me figure out is the other 4 light fixtures to the other switch. The L1 has 4 white/4 black/4 ground, currently 3 black are connected taped up alone, 3 white are the same (which indicates "hot" when i test it, then the last white (marked as the switch and the last black are connected. L2 and L3 have 2 white/2 black/2 ground and finally L4 has 1 white and 1 black (which both tested "hot".) Any suggestions you can offer would be so appreciated!
    Thank you and have a blessed day.

      +Tyrone Robertson Sorry for the delayed response as well on my end. Been pulling my hair trying to figure this out. i created a quick drawing to help better describe the current set up. I'm confused as there are only black and white wires. The power only goes into Light #1. Also in light #1, the two single pole switches controlling different lights enter there as well as the outgoing to the next fixture. so a total of 4 white and 4 black in that fixture box alone not including the actual light itself with the black and white wire. I'm stumped as to how to hook up the series of lights. L #1-4 to SW#1 and L#5-6 to SW2. Thank you in advance! :)

    Your video helped man thank you very much. I don't why but I had this confusion in my head with a really simple setup. Two switches, two feed to different set of lights and a 120V jack and the breaker coming in. When you said "Most of the time you should never have a white on the switch other than that it's a hot wire": that cleared my mind lol I don't know why but I was connecting the whites on the "Off" position of the switches. Now it's a pair of black jumpers and everything works fine. Thanks!

    Hey Oscar it is not that hard to do what you are asking but it depends on whether or not you have a conductor in the box that is not switched. If you do all that is needed is to cut the tab on the outlet (the bronze side) and put the unswitched conductor on the other bronze screw.

    Definitely should re identify the white as a hot. Not being a neutral we refer to that as an " ungrounded conductor" ( hot). Good job. Good luck with your business. Neutral is required in most conditions at the switch box per NEC. 2014 I believe

    Great movies, super helpful, I am very appreciate of your expertise.
    Question: I am putting up a couple different sets of lights one different switches. I am using Halo can lights that have their own box for wiring. Should I use a junction box next to it and then run the pigtail into the light's box? It does't seem like the box is big enough for all the pigtail and junction wiring.
    Thanks

    • @Tyrone3340
      @Tyrone3340  10 років тому

      no you do not have to use an external junction box unless you go over the rated box fill for the junction box on the light. normally you are just looping through the lights which gives you 2 cables but if you end up with a situation where you have a lot more cables going to any particular recessed light you may want to rethink your wiring layout

    Good morning Tyrone. I have been a long time subscriber and really enjoy your videos. I have a couple of questions regarding a new switch and exhaust fan/light I want to install in my bathroom. 1st question is it excessive to tie a 20 amp source into 15 amp receptacles or switches? The electrician that swapped out the BX cable in my house did this. My second question is, is it appropriate for me to use a 20 amp single pole switch with two interrupters on it to power a bathroom exhaust fan with light and night light coming from the 20 amp source? The electrician left a 3 wire from the existing 15amp interrupter for me to install the fan at a later date.

    Hello Tyrone, I enjoyed your video. It was and is very educational and easy for the typical home handy man. I have a question, I have several motion sensors going around the perimeter of my house all daisy-chaining to each other providing power to the next one, and then when it hits the end, it sends a new wire to a power switch inside my house. The problem is that now the motion sensors are sensitive and some times stay on during the day. I have to go to the switch and turn it off for several minutes and then turn it back on. Then it resets itself. Upon reading the instructions for the motion sensors, it states each motion sensor must be on it's own switch. My problem is that i know have 8 motion sensors and would need 8 switches. I do not want eight switches with each its own gangway. I have seen two switches per gangway. Are you familiar with a single gangway with 4 switches? Does such thing exist? Or should I use 4 gangways with two switches on each gangway? I like things to look pretty, I do not want my wife to slap across the head for sloppiness. What are your suggestions? Regarding the wiring after watching your video, I know know that I must send a return wire from each motion sensor back to be on it's own switch and so they can work properly.

    • @Tyrone3340
      @Tyrone3340  10 років тому

      Hey Joshua yes you can get 4 gang switch boxes but I think your interpretation of the switch requirements may be off a little. It has been a while since I have worked with motion lights but some models use a technique that we sometimes refer to as a count switch. on to off transitions of the switch so many times change the off delay time for the lights. the only reason that you would need a switch for each light in this situation would be if you wanted or needed different off delay values for each light. but using one switch for all the lights would just make the lights all have the same off delay time.

    I think it is easier than it looks. I am just thinking of installing 3 - 2 gang receptacles each one down stream from the one in front of it, and then run a switch from each box, or 3 switches from the receptacles in a larger gang box to put the switches in the same locality between the same two studs. I did not know that the black and the white wire on a switch are both hot. I will have to examine that until I grasp it, and find out how that works fundamentally, relative to what is going on electrically, but for right now it eludes me, for one, where both hot wires come from. Hmmm? I will have to look deeper into it.

    I am princess's mom and I do the electrical in my house. I used your videos to remove old wire n tube and rewire. Everything works well thank you. I have an electrical problem that you maybe can help me with. I copied a previous connection (end stop of a light circuit) for the back porch and back outside light to the front porch and front outside light connection and the fuse blew. The back porch has the porch light switch box connected to a flood light. Literally, three black wires are connected to the right side of the flood light switch. The power is coming up from the basement to the switch box. There is one black wire on the lower right screw and one wire on the top right screw and one black wire pushed into the top next to the upper right screw. The three whites are connected together with a electrical nut/screw and the ground is piggy backed onto the ground of the switch. This set up allows both the lights and the switches to work just fine. I don't want to make this too long so I'll stop here. Can you explain this set up to me and possibilities why it did not work for the end stop in the front of the house as it did for the end stop (of a circuit) in the back. I have the power coming up to a switch in the living room box with the one wire from the front outside switch (connected to the outside light) coming down into same box and the wire from the porch fan/light coming down into the same box. Thank you for your help past, current and in the future. KB

    keep your lighting circuit and ur outlets separated...if and when u are able...as well as ur neutrals...unless you like your t.v or computer fuzzy....good rule of thumb..this way if you ever have a 20 amp outlet sum were its not bunched in with a lighten circuit which should be on a 15 amp breaker...also in commercial world its a different animal all together,,,,try hooking a outlet up to a 277 volt lighten circuit...most commercial building have high voltage in the switch's...277 VOLT all juiced up on sum ballasts....now i know this video is for weekend warriors so i understand keeping it simple...but sum young future sparky could watch this and think hes a lil better then he is...(I WAS THIS GUY BUY THE WAY...i got lit up working a 3 way system on a ten foot ladder in a t BAR ceiling..so good video man...like ur positivity bro..i mean i know this took time to not only make but the lil set up...good issh man...GUESS THE NUMBER ONE THING I WANT TO SAY IS ........BUY YOURSELF A QUALITY TESTER....not a tick tester or a whiggy ...i recommend the knopps testers...bust tester ever no batteries just fool prof way to increase your safety buy 50 %..ALWAYS TEST WHAT UR WORKING...just cause u think its off with a breaker turned off it isnt off till u put a tester on it...think u should how to properly check if circuit is dead...or if its right voltage...thats it man...its a electrical video bugaloo dance off friend...im turbo and ur ozone...my video is coming so u better tighten up your game...AHA...just kidding dog....good stuff man..keep up spreading that free knowledge...if only everyone did the same instead of trying to always make a buck...this world could and would be in a lot less turmoil...GOOD FOR YOU STUD...be good friend...

    You rock Tyrone thank you for being so
    generous with your knowledge.
    Question, I got one of those annoying situations
    in that an outlet is completely controlled by a switch.
    How tricky would it be to covert it to just be half
    controlled by the switch? I know the basics to electricity
    and have the tools.
    Also, I'm well versed in CSS/HTML
    and can do some simple php. Wordpress sites use these
    three languages. Best of luck on your site building endeavor.
    Hit me up w/ any questions in that arena.

    An easy way to visualize acceptable outlet spacing, would be to use a lamp that is fitted with a six foot cord. You need to be able to set the lamp at any place around the perimeter of the room, and plug it in, without the cord crossing a doorway. Do that, and you should be golden.

    Thanks- I have switch box with one load live line coming in. There used to be 2 lights controlled by 2 switches but the second line is dead. I think i can splice into the black line from the hot wire and connect to the white line in the light box and then put the white line on the hot side of the switch and the other side on the neutral to the panel bus. Do you think that would work?

    I would have like to see you hook up everything from scratch. It's not that easy as you say, I just want to put up a motion light sensor outside and get my hot wire from an existing outlet. Can't you just do (add a outlet from an existing outlet?) Gracias from Mexico

    I opened the old switch box and I found a
    1. BLACK n WHITE wires with no ground and the white wire is the hot wire These are the HOT. WIRES
    2. Black white wire with no ground i do not know if the white wire is the hot wire these are the cables for a OUTSIDE LIGHT
    3. Plus the cable black white N green for my CEILING FAN.
    I do not know what to do any suggestions please

      if it is only 2 wires in the box then you have no neutral which means you can not power your new fan from that box

    Hello Tyrone, I did a switch loop in my shed about 10 years ago, but i put in a 3 wire cable. I used red, black and green wires.The white wire isn't attached to anything.
    The day I purchased Belkin wireless switch. It has 2 black hot wires, 1 white neutral wire and 1 green ground wire. Its setup for a standard (light fixture at end of a cable run). It said I need white neutral wire hookup for it to run.
    My question is can I connect those 2 neutral wires together and then connect that white neutral(3 way) wire onto the same breaker box?
    Thanks Dennis

    • @Tyrone3340
      @Tyrone3340  8 років тому

      Just because the wires are white does not mean that it is neutral. If you have a 3 conductor between the light and the switch then that means that either way you can make the switch work. if power is coming to the box with the switch tie the power to one side of the switch and the black going to the light to the other and your neutrals together. If power is going to the light tie the hot to the red or black of the 3 conductor and the other to the light and tie the whites together. In the switch tie the white to white and black and red to switch.

      Thanks Tyrone, Your video was the only one that help me figured out what was the problem with the old wiring. I ended up tracing the white neutral back to a box connector. The neutral wasn't connected because i didn't need it at the time. Everything worked after I reconnected it in the box. PS. I am glad I read my Electrical book before I installed that end switch. Because I wasn't going to remove the sheetrock.

    Great videos. I have a question for you I hope I can explain myself. I am working on a master bath remodel. I have installed a bathroom exhaust fan light combo on two different switches one for fan one for light. I want to install a light in my shower can I use the switch that goes to my exhaust fan light to also power off on the shower light so they both turn on and off when I flip the switch. If I can How would I wire that.

    • @Tyrone3340
      @Tyrone3340  7 років тому

      yes you just run a 2wire cable from the exhaust unit and tie the black with the light and white to white

      The light in the shower is usually required to be GFCI protected.
