Funfact: here in the old continent, replace an head gasket is daily business, but every kind of work on an European car sounds like a big deal in every American UA-cam channel, even when handled by pros.
I wish we had more European mechanics here in Florida. All the shops I personally visit cry like spoiled little entitled children when I showed up asking for a diagnostic or recommend me to another shop, which that shop then recommends me to another shop because its a VW Touareg V10 TDI. Yet there are people on youtube and forums yanking those engines out, taking them apart and back together again like Legos.
Probably because of all of the American and Japanese cars we drive over here don't blow gaskets as regularly as European cars. And aren't nearly so complicated / expensive to repair.
Yeah mate, I can understand it, that's because of something totally unknown to american people: it's called ENGINEERING and REGULAR MAINTENANCE. ENGINEERING is that magical thing that allows you to have, for example, 500 horsepower out of a naturally aspirated 5 liters V8, like we do in the old continent. REGULAR MAINTENANCE is what you need for every fine piece of engineering... REPLACING AN ENGINE FOR A BLOWN HEAD GASKET... what happens when you have dead flies on the windscreen? You replace the entire car? 😂😂 But yeah, American cars are obviously more simple... What do you usually get from a 5 liters V8? 200 horsepower? 😂 I love the American attitude of always claiming a BIG WIN even out of CATASTROPHIC FAILURES 😂😂
@@petermolnar8667 true and good point. But if you know how BMW's valvetronic works, cranking the engine by hand doesn't open the valves any noticeable (above idle) amount. So If the valvetronic opened the valves to lets say full open (full throttle) then it may have bent valves. But they didn't rev it so that was a good move. Still lucky tho.

But yeah, American cars are obviously more simple... What do you usually get from a 5 liters V8? 200 horsepower? 😂
I love the American attitude of always claiming a BIG WIN even out of CATASTROPHIC FAILURES 😂😂
Sam, I really hope you took care of Steven after this, he really deserves a bonus!
he nearly destroyed the engine with that timing mistake.
@@jcsuperstars1100 not necessarily, since they've turned it over by hand before startup
@@jcsuperstars1100 I haven't thought about that, thanks for the reply! At least no damage occurred, rather cheap lesson for him (and us viewers) in the end 👍
@@jcsuperstars1100 no one with a bit of brain, would rev a misfiring/failing engine! tbh you have to be dumb in order to do that lol
One of the best UA-cam videos I've ever seen! Rich is awesome!!!!! Steven rocked it! Perhaps Steven is Sam's new "Car Wizard"?
Wow! How satisfying to finally get it solved. I want a tech like Steven working on my car in the future.
I've been working on cars for years. I've always had a saying, the last 10% of the job is way harder than the first 90%.
Anyone working on anything will tell you the same thing, it's just Pareto principle :) I've seen countless versions of "the last 20% takes 80% of effort/time" and it's always pretty intuitive to anyone who specializes in absolutely any field :) (I don't work on cars and can high-five you right now, along with lots of people from all industries ;))
Yeah, 80/20 is a common ratio in most fields.
They say the same in porn
Told you its fixable, tired of all the keyboard warriors saying he couldnt....
He gave you a smoking deal on labor charges.
Should have been closer to 10 grand if he spent a month tying up my lift
@@derekchauvinisahero2010 Yeah, but you getting repeat business from someone restoring cars for a living, plus hundreds of thousands of views marketing your shop. I think that would be worth some discount.
And everyone made multiple mistakes leading this to take way more time then it should have. Still, the shop accepted so much liability even if there was a waiver signed. This was a rough repair but the results were amazing and of course there’s content for Sam’s channel and promotion for the shop.
I was walking through the super market and someone took a flying head kick and knocked me clear unconscious. That was more subtle than the lead in to your ear bud plug. Love it, keep doing what you're doing.
Dude is a good mechanic! And a humble guy. Even cooler...
Technician not Mechanic .
30 minutes to re-time it? ... Steven, that's amazing! 😎
Congratulations!
Bmw needs to completely redo their interior for ALL models.

This fix made Stevo look 45.
I hope he takes a well deserved vegas vacation to "recharge his batteries"
I really enjoyed this journey, and all the details you explained. Subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
Steven, you and your team deserve all the success coming your way bro.!!!
GREAT JOB!!!
I don't know if this is a non interference engine, but you could very well have bent a valve with the timing mistake.
Seeing that thing run is nice
they got VERY lucky
"Did it sound bad?"
Everyone watching: 😰
Well, H/h-opefully not, right guys?/??/???
These guys just invented a new genre of youtube videos-the docudrama genre.
That's what I've been thinking watching these guys the past few months (rich, sam, legit), they've recently developed such a dynamic that is very different from the usual automotive UA-cam (i know they've always been friends, but the vibe just feels more evolved now), that it's just its own thing now
You took the words from my mouth.
@@chiefdenis Yes. A new crossover genre.
@@mrsoshadabaadman i absolutely love it
@xheralt Put some respect on Uncle Rich The Kid's IP.
Stephen was relentless in his endeavors and now he is the I8 man
Just watched this whole series on the I8... and Steve is a legend. Nice work 👏
Glad to see you got it figured out. “Stepmom” still looking 🔥 as usual too. 😉
Check engine light and TPM light both on. That is how Sam rolls.....
That guy at the end LOL. How did that go when you asked him to be in the video?
“Not a problem, boss.”
That first startup sounded like an old crank-start Model T, haha
Those are the kinds of cars on my channel. They sound MUCH better than this did.
When it fired up the first time I was like “sweet, they put a lawn mower engine in it”
By far my favourite Sam Crac series of videos. Gold.
Sam, you need to help that guy at the end get his own YT channel
I’d buy a lottery ticket after starting a super car motor with the timing WAY OFF!!
And not bend a single valve!!! And a BMW at that!! Wow my world is upside down!
Thats a mini cooper engine not a super car engine idk why it cost so much but yet you can buy a mini for a few thousand but yet bmw wants 10k plus for a replacement
@@carltonbankz9273
Ok check the spec sheet and tell me they are the same!!
At a small displacement it has almost 50hp more!!
But you do have an opinion tho, not a truthful one!
@@mikewest5529 WOW FIFTY HP MORE???? Than a mini !!!! That’s not super car that’s hyper car!!! I mean compared to your Honda anyway
@@derekchauvinisahero2010
It’s also electric. And for a small 3 cylinder it’s pretty good!
Lmao I do NOT drive no civic!! Ha ha ha ha
50hp is like 25% more power from a 1.5L 3cyl. That's pretty substantial.
I have never clicked on a video faster
BMW i8 build has been truly a joy to watch from start to finish. Keep up the great content.
Glad you got it going, I hope you gave Steven a bonus, he saved you a boatload of money.
Hope Steven got a huge raise and a new head mechanic position...
I’m not the owner
@@stevenquinones9923 Your The Man!
@Thodieous K thanks man
His commercials in the middle of the video feel like I'm watching The Truman Show. Sam will love this comment purely to validate I watched at least half the video.
$5k to do the job, $10k if you watch, $15k if you help. Props to Stephen.
Sam was using a lot of "we" and "us"
I admire people who manage to fix such engines and complicated cars. Do these people grow somewhere or born like that knowing everything? :D I wonder where they learn all this... If i had to learn from trying to repair i would leave the first car fully disassembled without knowing how to put the first screw back where it belongs :D nice work guys
Losing a lift for a whole month for 5k. That’s a friggin blessing. Mind you the hours of labor, yes you helping was a big part but he definitely blessed you. Great job guys.
Yeah, was thinking to myself A MONTH! Guy ripped them off something fierce. He keeps bragging about saving $10,000 by not buying a new engine, but all that really happened was he got the shop to eat the cost of repairing his car.
@@unclematt3 in all fairness, the advertising is worth it alone. They both did good.
We all know the car's going onto the lawn somewhere, never to be driven again.
$5250 to change a blown head gasket... great engineering, BMW
They just need looking after engineering needs looking after
in central Europe it would cost 500€ and it would be done in 2 days. It's US and it's expensive workforce that's the problem.
"This is a car out of time." You got that right.
Great video Sam! Awesome work! I'm glad you've managed to put it back together! Kudos to you for admitting, showing us, and fixing the mistake that happened on the way!
Sam, I love how you have involved multiple people in on the running gags. Rich, Corey Chase, and motorhead.co! Keep it up! That's what its all about!
Sam! that Rich segment was AWESOME! Had me dying laughing
I was watching one of your stepmothers "adult movies" the other day and , no lie, the man behind the "camera" sounded a lot like you. Just sayin...
Nice job hard smart work paid off. Big up to my Jamaican brother in your video
I take my hat off to you for your steadfast determination and commend the rare talent that is Stephen who has a persona that says. Calm cool and directed, in this case successfully rectifying the engine and defying the manufacturers recommendations. Great story well worth following. Now please put the bumper on polish that sleek body ready for the next segment where the I8 returns to its former glory, on the road.
Beautiful series. Glad I was able to watch it all in 1 go!
