Even the cost of the oil change kit is ridiculous! This is exactly why I would now not buy a Spyder. The dealers are killing the market for the product. Thanks for the clarity.
Hi Wayne, Just took my bike in for the "end of season" check up and oil change. For geographical reasons I decided this year to return to my original dealer as I had heard they had got their act together in the service area. A pleasant surprise awaited me. I dropped the bike off late one afternoon and they had it ready for me the next morning. Oil change, full inspection, and ran it through BUDS to make sure there was no updates...... $365.55 CDN including tax. They have won me back!!! it reminded me of this video. Hope all is well with you!!!
Sounds like you won the Spyder service lottery. That's about $266 US$ 🤔... close to half what I paid 😫😖. But I'm glad to hear you got one heckuva deal, Fraser 😁👍👍
Darn hard to find and honest dealers anymore. I worked for a dealer and would never take my Spyder to one. Biggest issue is paying for work that does not get done. It really is a national problem. Thanks Wayne.
Yeah, for those who have found a dealer they like and trust, they need to stick with that dealer, and that goes for service on any brand of motorcycles or automobiles 🤔😁
I just replaced the standard sway bar on my 2020 RT Ltd with an after market sway bar. I did the job myself after being told by the Can Am dealer the job would take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to complete at $155 per hour. I’m located in the state of Victoria in Australia. I did the job myself in 2 hours with some help from a mate and I’m no mechanic. Just a retired Plumber who hates being gouged by dealers. Keep the videos coming, and as we say here “good onya mate”👍😊
You've got one up on me, a retired plumber definitely has much better experience with wrenches than a retired accountant 😁😂. But I have to admit, for the work I can accomplish myself, it brings pride with a bonus of saving money. Thank you so much for your kind words 😁👍👍
Hi Spyder Wayne, saving money doing the work myself is one thing. But most of all it’s the satisfaction you get from working on your own machine and being able to take the time and care that sadly dealers are often don’t / can’t because they’re rushing to get the job done in order to move onto the next one.
You owe that dealer no loyalty. He took advantage of you. And we'll keep doing it until he is exposed the only way. They learn is to effect their bottom line tell the name....
Yery good video. I have been a service manager for a car dealership. Shop supplie fees is just another add-on to get the customer to pay for items that in the past were just the cost of doing business. What's next, a portion of the power, water, and property taxes? Most businesses really don't care about customer service or if you come back. And, I am pleased to see that you were not rude, just letting them know why you will not be coming in back. Safe travels.
As long as the guy or gal at the service counter is being courteous and respectful, they are doing their job. They are usually not the person who establishes the pricing and billing practices of the shop, and even if they are the owner, the biliing practices I talk about in this video are not illegal, but rather a fairly common practise for vehicle service shops. I received good service, but in this case, this dealer appears to be more interested in taking advantage of the biliing practice rather than in customer retention or repeat business. So, off I will go to find a different dealer for service. Thank you so much for your comment 👊😁👍
I babbled and blah blah blah'd to beat the band, I was shocked how long the footage was when I was done, I cut out twice as much as what I left in. I hope some folks find it interesting 🤪🥴😄🤣
Start doing its yourself. It's 2 holes and your need a 36mm socket. I'm using Amsoil in wife's. They kit don't get all the o rings . You use to be able get the kits for under 100 dollars. We bought a service plan with ours . But I believe it's was around 300 dollars. The 19s and down was lots harder to do service. But the new so much easier. I take my time and it's still less than hour . But hey we had rear tire put on cost 550 dollars tire was 200 dollars
@@TheBlueBikeDoyle The oil change I can do, it's the other "grocery list" servicing items BRP requires that's challenging, some of which I can't do, including the BUDS diagnostic check.
It is frustrating isn’t it. I had a headlight go out on my 18rtl. The dealer wanted $400 labor plus bulbs to repair. I asked since you have to take the bike apart to change the bulbs can you give me a break on the oil change. They declined. So I would have been looking at around $800 for the job. I decided to try and do it myself. Watched UA-cam’s ordered the oil kit and new led bulbs and tools for about $300. Learned a lot and saved $500. Will not be back to the dealer who sold me the bike. Sad but true.
Maybe it's because I have an F3-S, headlight replacement and bulbs could be easier but in all took about 2-3 hours as I learned how to remove all the panels to gain access. On my Spyder at least, I dont think you can ask for a labor savings because changing oil and a bulb are literally on very different areas of t he bike.
My local dealer in Cornwall Ont charged me $300 and a bit, I had removed the plastic hoping to reduce my cost. Having a Spyder is an expensive toy. My other local dealer in Embrun, Ont is very busy and gets to your bike when they have openings. There is a dealer in Ottawa that I wouldn't give the time of day too (very bad experience with their service dept). All in All find a dealer you like, can trust and is helpful.😎😎
My experience is very similar to yours. The first service was at the dealer 90 miles from home (platinum rated for can-am service). It was an insane $397.44, the second oil change was at a local tractor supply store (gold rated for can-am) For an oil change, rear tire and pannier latch replacements. The total cost of the 2nd oil change (which included the recall on the trunk latched and a new rear tire was $618. The bad part about going there was they do not "do tires", they outsourced the rear tire work. That took 28 days of waiting and calling (each day was perfect and sunny and I was told to call in a few days until finally had had enough and told them I was going to get it period). The third and last service was back at the dealer where I purchased it (90 miles away) and they gouged me. I got 3 new tires (even though the fronts could have gone much longer. I also let them do the brake pedal/rear light recall). They "do tires" but I had to pre order them a month in advance and then I have to pay $50 for them to "get them" from another dealer. Total cost $1,700.00 Shop supplies were $28, oil kit was $143.99 like yours. Also itemized on the bill: tire labor $435, air filter $44, etc. Just loaded with bloated fees to the point I will never let anyone else change the oil again. I will let them do ties and recalls, but I have had it with padding the bill with crap fees.
I also have an elaborate spreadsheet detailing everything ever done on my bike. I am a numbers guy also. My previous post was long, but trust me, I had a lot more detail I could have provided!@@SpyderWayne
Last year I took my spider to Baharon because I was in the area replaced 3 tires and breaks the bill with $700. My local dealer was over 1200 thank you Ron.
That sounds crazy, crazy, crazy expensive Stan! Again, sometimes you just need to make a trip out of going to the dealer to get a decent price on the service because they are not all like that... I have said it before and I'll say it again I ride 225 mi one way to get service but my dealer does not price gouge and he doesn't care if I show up with my own tires or he sells me the tires...🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Anither great video, Wayne... Your restraint is admirable! I'm doing my own service work so far, and I'm using Rotella T6 oil, K&N filter... The only dealer work I've had done on my 2021 was warranty on the trunk and seat struts... I found an independent shop in Houston that does excellent work at a fair price... Thornoli's... I think that's the best approach if you're fortunate enough to have a shop like that in your area...
I thought about getting my seat and trunk shocks replaced under warranty, and upgrade to the Show Chrome heavy duty ones after those failed, but for $60 ($30 ea) , I got the heavy duty ones to hopefully permanently fix that issue. Thanks, Martin 😁👍
I have noticed a similar jump in costs at the dealer over the past couple of years, we are paying about the same here. Up here in 🇨🇦 we do not have as many choices to shop around for certified Can Am shops. It is a bit of an oligopoly for want of a better term. Friends of mine have told me that the motorsports business in general tends to be a bit shady at best. I am sure this is why many people just do it themselves..... i used to.
Thanks for sharing you story that's a very high price to pay you handled it very well and I don't blame you for not going back there . take care have a great weekend and a great riding season
Well, thank you so much. And now that I get to enjoy an endless supply of 7-day long weekends ... 🤔😄... I certainly plan on enjoying this riding season 👊😁👍
Well, since they charged me the amount they quoted, and I authorized that amount, then that's on me. But since I won't be back to this dealer, they lost an opportunity for a repeat customer, and that's on them.
@@SpyderWayne It didn't sound like they were that bothered Wayne? A good dealership would have shown concern and compromised with you. They will do the same, to the next customer, until they are called out. You need to be more dominant in the dealings. You were robbed - and since you signed for it - you let them rob you. You are way too nice with people that are clearly scamming you. NAME AND SHAME THESE CROOKS!
I am really curious about the inspection listed. Please provide a breakdown of that and what it entails so that the "value" can be assessed. I feel most of the things they do are listed in the service manual, available online . I bought my Spyder late last year, and this will be its first season. The only miles it has are from riding it home from the dealer, so it's literally 20 miles. If the inspection is literally check visually check this or that with no spe ial tools then there is no value to them IMO as I can do that myself. I can change the oil myself. Where they might get you is with warranty. If something happens to a system or the engine and it was not properly I specter, then warranty could be denied. This is why I video all maintenance and service on my motorcycles when in the warranty period. The dealer used in this video was at least honest, did the work (hopefully) and gave you back your bike when done. A more shady dealer would cover thier tracks by holding the bike for the whole 2.5 hours claimed. (This is why I'd ask about the inspection items done.) Thank you for sharing your experience. My only criticism is that you didn't not share the name of this dealer, potentially helping anyone else who is considering this shop.
As stated in the video, I will NOT share the name of this dealer. Sorry for your disappointment. If you want to bash a business publicly, online, on social media, that's your choice. As for the first service, yes, the grocery list of items is shown in the ownet's manual. In my manual, these items are listed on page 111. This video is not about the specific individual items inspected for the first maintenance service. I did state, at the beginning of the video, that in addition to the oil change, this was for the first service on my Spyder. The point of this video is the 2.5 hours of labor time charged, or $300 of labor, Vs the actual 1.25 hours of time the dealer had my Spyder in their shop. in other words, this dealer bills a "book" rate or "standatd" rate and not "actual" time. That billing practice is not a big surprise, but the spread between their standard time was double the actual time, and that difference doesn't sit well with me. The recourse I've chosen, is simply to never return to this dealer.I have had, and I show 3 prior services done on my previous Spyder, for comparative purposes.
@@SpyderWayne YOU EXPLAIN YOUR REASONING WELL AND YOUR CHOICE NOT TO DIVULGE THE NAME IS HONOURABLE. UNFORTUNATELY, THAT VIEWPOINT DOES NOT HELP ANYBODY ELSE, UNFORTUNATE ENOUGH TO USE THAT DEALER. THEY WILL, THEREFORE, CONTINUE WITH THIS DISHONEST BEHAVIOUR, FOR AS LONG AS THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH IT.
The motor cycle manufacturers don't seem to understand that their failure to control the gouging at the dealerships will have the long term effect of destroying the hobby.
Something to think about... if the manufacturers cut-off business with dealers who "embelish" on the prices they charge customers, I wonder how many dealers would be left ? 🤔😳😄
Great video Wayne. I guess it depends on what you consider value for all that money spent. Since I bought the Sea-to-Sky model, I decided to get my service done at my dealership knowing it was going to be more expensive (just like it is for cars instead of going to a local smaller garage). Like you said, dealerships are in it to make enough money to pay their staff and keep their business running; I have no problem with that. But, overcharging the actual time it took or adding charges without prior explanations are reasons enough to not return there, I agree. BRP has to improve the quality of their dealership network, in all aspects, if they wish to retain its customers. I am lucky to have an excellent CanAm dealership (I had a great flat tire story too long for here as well as a defective battery story too). Not only will I continue my service there, I also put my Spyder there for winter storage (I don't have a garage at home). Is it expensive? Yes, it is, but I get great service and attention, which is what I value the most to keep enjoying my Spyder for many more years. Cheers Wayne!
Sorry Wayne, that is just ridiculous what they charge. I wish you were closer to me I’d change the oil for you. You supply the oil kit and good conversation. I do my own maintenance on my 17RTL. I buy the oil filter and Orings kit from BajaRon and buy my Amsoil local. I know it is done right and save myself a lot of money 😀 Thank you for sharing this video though maybe it will help someone else to understand the cost of an oil change at a stealer.😂
I can do the oil change, but there are some items on the scheduled maintenance services list I can't do, so I get the service done at a dealer while the Spyder is under warranty, but it will be a different dealer next service.
That is crazy Wayne You can call me tight, but being on the road in our RV and trying to find a respectable dealer. I normally change my own oil. I buy my genuine Can-Am oil kit. Pretty obvious it didn't take 2 1/2 hours. At least they could have held it in the shop for two and a half hours. First service you think it would have a Bud download. Check fluids and drive belt safety checks. WOW Thanks for the video.
I can do the oil change, but I can't do some of the other itmes on the scheduled maintenance list, and while the Spyder is under warranty, I will likely continue servicing at a dealership, but it will be a different dealer next service.
I have a 2021 RTL and so far (even though I ask constantly) they all insist there are no BUD downloads. I am in the software industry. I find that a bit hard to believe.
I know the F3 has less plastic and it's a quicker oil change, but sometimes I change it myself. Now, KUDOS to our dealer...he is reasonable in his hourly rate AND he only charges for the time he actually spends doing the service. Very reasonable and cannot recommend him enough! You said no dealer bashing...can we give dealer recommendations, lol?
Book time for a standard service is unheard of in most states. It would be interesting if they published an oil change with the flat fee somewhere in the local papers or trade. Very educational- serves as a reminder to ask if they charge actual time or book time? You may want to call the BRP 800 number and discuss this dealership even though I suspect you won’t go back…..
BRP sent me a survey request a few days after the service. I normally don't do surveys, but this time I completed and submitted the survey, with my comments on the billed hours vs actual hours. That was 2 weeks ago, no response or follow up from BRP (yet), and I doubt there's anything BRP can or will do about this.
Great video Wayne glad I found your channel. Liking and subscribing. Everything is so expensive and it seems harder and harder to find folks you can trust to do a good job, do what they say they are going to do, and care about what they do.
I change for $40 on my GL1800. The spyder is a bit of a challenge for oil change as labor can add up. Hmm I'm thinking I should get into spyder service as I can profit while saving owner a ton. My rate is $85hr plus the "kit" is just a filter o ring and oil - $60 or less
Man oh man, you would make Spyder owners very happy if you had an oil change kit (to spec) for under $60 The XPS kit comes with 5 snd a half qts of oil (my Spyder takes more oil than my car 🤪), oil filter, 2 crush washers for the 2 drain plugs, and five (5) O-rings, all 5 of them are different... and yeah that kit costs us $143.99 🙄🤪😩
My first service on my 22 RTL was $695- and I was like every 10K miles UGH, so when my second service was ready I went to Baja-ron and got the kit and did it for under $150- then I ended up getting rid of the spyder it was not my ''cup of tea'' as they say., I won't even get into the rear tire fiasco.
I could do the oil change, and some of the other service inspections, but there are some items I can't do, so it's the price I pay to make sure I don't jeopardize the warranty.
In Colorado the book rate is what is charged. This means if it is quicker its bad for the customer, however if it takes now like 3 hrs they cant charge more. I thought it was changed all over that the book rate is what is charged. Usually though they would have kept it for a little longer to get closer to that actual time.
Yeah, I guess I should give them credit for giving me my Spyder back when it was ready, they could have easily kept it another hour and I prob wouldn't have made this video.
Did they do anything beyond the oil change? It absolutely does not take 2.5 hours to change the oil. There's not a standard labor rate chart anywhere that would show that amount of time.
It was the first service for my current Spyder RT, due at 3000 miles. The Spyder dealers will have references to standard (average) time/rates for each of the scheduled maintenance services, and yes, each of the services have a grocery list of items that are inspected/checked/adjusted etc. This is my 2nd Spyder, and I showed in this video that the first 3 services on my previous Spyder were all significantly lower costs than the service in this video. The point I make in this video is the dealer had my Spyder in the shop for 1.25 hrs, and yet tgey charged me 2.5 hrs labor for the service, and they claimed they charge the book rate (aka standard rate). It's a shame some dealers take advantage of their customers, but it shows that this dealer isn't trustworthy.
Hey Wayne, would have been interesting to know their reason for the added labour cost and how they would have addressed it with you. Hope your next dealer is better. cheers Dave
Hi Dave, the reason is they don't charge actual time, they charge a "book" or "standard" time for the service, but in this case, that "standard" time is inconsistent with my previous dealer.
I just tackled my 1st oil change...it's the bike's 3rd change (2021) but the 1st of my doing it myself. $168.(CAD) for the kit and about 2 hours of my time watching vids and over obsessing if I was doing things right and I was done...other than a few Ibuprofen's afterwards, it all went fairly smooth. I'll bring it in next year for the brakes and tires...
I'm due for my first 3000 mi maintenance inspection on my '23 RT. After watching some videos on the oil change, I decided to purchase the priority maint plan which includes all scheduled services for 36 months. I probably over-paid ($2300), but at the time I didn't feel like doing it all myself.
There's quite a few service inspection/adjustment items included in the scheduled maintenance that I'm either not able to perform or not qualifued to verify certain items are within spec. The oil change kit & labor cost is usually at least 1/2 the cost of a service. If your plan is strictly for the scheduled maintenance and nothing else, I would say you overpaid. But it almost sounds like you may be getting extended warranty, perhaps tire and battery coverage too. $2300 does seem pretty steep though.
Nope. The extended warranty and battery replacement were extra. 😢 This is my first ever motorcycle, so I was willing to pay the extra to not have to do the work myself. At 55, I can still do the work myself but doesn't mean I want to. lol
The new Spyders are so simple to change your own oil. Takes maybe 30 minutes. I uses full synthetic motorcycle oil and not over priced BRP oil. I change every 5K Miles.
Well, you have a good dealer. In this video, I showed the costs of the first 3 services on my first Spyder plus this $505 cost of the first service on my new Spyder, I didn’t get so lucky.
yup, my dealer charges $162/hr. and that XPS 5w40 4t semi-synth oil change kit from Amazon is $143. so thats completive with the dealer. However you can get 6qt of Castrol 4t 5w40 full synth for $47, the oil filter kit for $18. That all well and good if one had the means to get under the ride. fortunately we only buy the accessories once.
@@SpyderWayne the service manual is useful, not expensive. I will probably let the dealer do tires.. My son got us a buds2 (so he could turn off dess on his F3) in the family so if things really go south we can ask the computer. In the 12 yrs I had my 08 wing I don''t think it ever got to the dealer, except for tires. enjoy. P.S. i'm 80yrs young
I think if they are gonna charge that much per hour for service, then they damn well ought to charge for the actual shop time. They are getting paid because they are that good right?
Hi Wayne bought my new 2022 rt sea to sky in 2023 the dealer wanted $500 dollars for the first service,so went to another can am mechanic which was $70 dollars for the oil thirty dollars for the oil filter $21 then $20 dollars GST the rest for labour so $235 all up I’m in Australia.
That's a great price for the oil change. If you get all the other required items serviced and inspected that are listed on the first service scheduled maintenance, hopefully, you'll get a better deal on the labor than I got. 😁👍
Good Morning. I have a 21 RTL I have a service booked for this Friday at my local dealer. The dealer is 235km away. We live in northern BC Canada (Fort St John) and have to drive to Grande Prairie Alberta. The cost of a service is $580.00. This will be our second oil service this year. This is kind of expensive the dealer says to change the oil every 5000km or 3000 miles. The owners manual says to change every 15000km or 9300 miles. What is the mile that you change your oil at? Ride Safe
Your dealer sounds like they want your money more often than needed. The Sypder does NOT need a service and oil change every 3000 mi or 5000 km. Yes, the manual says the 1st service is due at 3000 mi or 5000 km. There's confusion on the 2nd service, but it is due at 9300 mi or 15000 km on the odometer, and it's due every 9300 mi or 15000 km thereafter. But there's also the mention in the manual that says "or every 12 months. I've been averaging about 6000 mi per year, so I've been gettng my service once a year, which is at a 6000 mi interval. If I start travelling more, I still will probabaly get the oil changed closer to 6000 mi intervals, even though the manual says 9300 mi, I'm just not comfortable with going that many miles without an oil change, but that's my personal choice. I also know other Spyder owners who prefer changing their oil every 3000 mi, again a personal choice, but BRP recommends every 9300 mi or 15000 km. So you should just pick the interval you're comfortable with. 😁👍
@RonDunlop And oh yeah, by the way, $580 Cdn is pricey but still a fair bit better than the $505 U.S. I paid for this service in this video, but I'm not going back to this dealer.
After you get the required tools an oil change kit and some spare mirror clips you can do it for $150😊 I went from a 2015 RT to F3’s after my first RT oil change.
The oil change on the 2020 RT's (and newer) is fairly easy. My 2022 RT still has 16 months remaining on the factory warranty, & some of the required scheduled maintenance items I can't do, so for now, I get to help the dealers put their kids through college 🤪😄🤣
New owner here purchased my spyder one week ago. I am sure glad I seen this video !!!. It may have kept me from buying something that got me and the wife back out on our hundred mile hugs. That would be a shame. I will be learning how to do all the maintainance on the Dream Chaser (what I call our new love) . A question I would like to ask is .... where does a guy get the service manual for a 2024 RT Limited ?. another if I may is... does anyone know of the best dealership near S E wisconsin. Thanks in advance. No bashing I like that ! just plain truth is what i seek...
@ernestdesotell2335 I don't believe that Can-Am will provide service manuals to Spyder owners, as far as i know, only to authorized dealers. You could try and ask your dealer. To get recommendations for dealers in your region, best thing to do is try to find a US Spyder Ryders group in your region, most regions have them, possibly on Facebook, that way you can get recommendations from other Spyder owners. The Sypder certainly is a dream machine, even though some dealers are not so good to deal with. 👊😁👍
That's a great pity -these Spyders are great fun - but your feeling is understandable. The dealers are killing their own trade. We DO need to NAME AND SHAME - to redress the issue!
Sounds like the rate slides depending on the service coordinator. Should be the same every time you go in. Not bounce up and down depending on the weather.
I have a 2023 Spyder RTL. My question is, how do you really really know that they changed the oil? If you are walking around the show room floor or waiting in the waiting room. How do you know they really did the service? I am the type of person that likes to go in the back to see the work getting done. Especially at that crazy price.
Over time (and I was never a bike mechanic), I have learned to do all of the maintenance on my 3 bikes myself- dealers charge too much and if it’s in your capabilities (and you have the tools) you can save a small fortune. If they are charging by the hour, even a partial hour (even 10 minutes) will be charged as 0.5 hrs I would assume. Always better to buy your own parts and do it yourself (if you’re able). Same with the cars.
I agree with you fully, and any DIY work is certainly easier on the wallet. I can and will be doing most of the work (that I can do) after the factory warranty on my Spyder expires in Aug 2025. Your comment is completely valid, thank you 😁👍. This video was not intended to be about my choice to get required maintenance services done at a dealer, which I choose to do. I choose not to jeopardize the warranty on the Spyder, which means I choose to eat the scheduled maintenance costs. This video was intended to show a billing practice that, in my opinion, went too far. But it's amazing how many other folks commenting seem to think this is only about a simple oil change. There are services required during the warranty period that I can not do, and some that I can do, including the oil change. Everyone can choose what they want to do on their own. Others think buying cheap oil at Walmart is the solution, and I'm laughing my ass off at those idiots, but then again, they absolutely have the right to put whatever kind of oil they choose in their bikes, that's their choice, so I'm trying to keep it down to a dull giggle 😆🤣🤣
Great explanation and breakdown of your bill and dealership. Unfortunately, this is another negative mark about purchasing one. I understand you have to pay to play, and my other toys are keeping me drained enough. In this case, the bang doesn't justify the buck.
Wayne, i will coment only on cost. Its insane to charge 505 USD. I will put it this way. In small garage like ours we would charge you 200 eur + tax +/- 260 usd. If i would have "professional" team - were we are just heading ... maybe one day..., most prbably we would need to go to 300-350 usd including tax.. Oil change is 45min job if we do it on our bYkes. If we do it on customers bike we take 1h15min as we do it little bit more "careful" & more precise. I think i will keep this video and watch it full and comment on it from small owner shop point of view in my ride & comments series :)))
Hey Martin 😁👍👍 This dealer appears to have lost interest in retaining customers. His billing practices are ridiculous, charging double the hours of labor. I do show the history of 4 services I have paid for. This one was just plain "insane" as you indicated. I'd love to bring my Spyder to your shop, but inter-continental geography is a challenge 😳😂🤣👍
I change my oil myself. It is not that difficult. I realize that many have no skills to do this, but a non-can am shop shouldn't be penalized as not being able to live up to can am standards. Also, can am made it easier to change oil in the later models so it should cost less and take less time to perform.
I don't think of it as a non Can-Am shop is being penalized, but will a non Can-Am shop have a technician that knows how to do service on a Spyder? Will they know how to remove and reinstall any of the body panels? Will they have access to the Spyder's specs to know how to inspect and adust items, like the belt tension, or belt centering or anything else that needs to be adjusted or lubricated? The oil change by itself can be done by Spyder owners, Can-Am On Road has videos for the Do-It-Yourself owners. It's some of these other service items that BRP requires during the 2-year warranty period that I would have difficulty with, I'm a retired bean counter (accountant) and my wrenching experience is somewhat limited, I'm just not as good as I wish I could be.
We got a new spyder last year. Servicing is $1600 US, but that’s pre paid for the first 5 years, or something like that. I still think it was a good deal.
Yikes. The 20-24 RT's are the easiest to change the oil. I do realize he should have done an inspection, too. I put the Baja Ron ultimate sway bar on my 21' RTL, I bet the labor would be tremendous on that.
Off-topic question: Have any of you viewers ever used Full synthetic oil in your Can-Am 1330 engine? I am trying to determine if I should stick with the XPS synthetic blend kit at $143 or build my own kit which costs less (approx $85) for Rotella full synthetic T6 5W40 and the oil filter kit from BajaRon. Isn't full synthetic better than synthetic blend?
There have been comments from folks who use full synthetic oil. As long as it's rated for motorcycles, for both engine & transmission lubrication, it's probably ok to use, but I'm not a BRP Can-am engineer. If you check out any of the Spyder forums, you'll find discussions on it. Some folks go with XPS as recommended by Can-Am, and and others want to save a few bucks. It's a personal choice. I've stuck wirh XPS for the 4 years I've owned a Syder.
As you said it isn’t the employees fault but 1.25 hours should’ve been charged as such. Last summer I took my bike to the Triumph dealership for a brake job and they charged me appropriately (but initially they said it would take 2 hours and I said … “I am not a mechanic but I can change the pads in less than 1 so I am sure you folks can do better” so they quote me 1.25 hours but then the hourly rate was 185.00 (I am not sure if they increased that to match the 2 hour standard rate or not) The point is …. They will catch you either way.
can am is pricing alot of people out. I see a sales decline in the next few years if this continues. I do all the work myself. The dealer only sees my ryker for recalls and anything computer related. It's BRP's fault and their business practices. the dealers hands are tied on certain things.
I wish I was good enough to do all the service maintenance on the RT, the oil change I can do, but I'm a bean counter geek, I'm not the wrencher I'd like to be 🤔🤣🤣
Dennis Dillion Boyse Idaho just charged me $585.00 for my first oil change. $417.00 Labor the rest was oil kit and shop supplies on a 2024 sea-to- sky. Nice hah
If you can find a local independent shop that can service a Spyder, then you are very lucky. A motorcycle service technician that's never ridden a Spyder, will not even know how to start the engine. 🤔🙄😄
Dealer are not only destroying their franchise, they are destroying their brand. I switched from Harley to a Goldwing for this exact reason, I got tired of getting screwed by Harley. Ended up with a much much much better bike.
The oil change is the primary reason for the 1st service, and I can do that. The 'grocery' list of items to inspect, with possible adjustments, kind of makes it a gold mine for dealers to get a couple of billable hours of labor. I admit that I certainly do not have the knowledge of how to verify and adjust everything on BRP's maintenance service grocery list for the Spyder, I wish I did.
$100 Cdn is about $70 to $75 US, that sounds really GOOD to me. The Spyder kit is $144 US, but the dang Spyder takes 5.5 quarts of oil and the kit comes with oil filter, 2 crush washers for both drain plugs, and 5 rubber O-Rings for the oil filter cap & stem (I know, crazy huh), yep Can-Am makes complicated vehicles 😖🤪🤣
BMW is the same way. I do my own work and get my oil and other parts for Wanderlich out of Germany. not from the dealer which would be twice the price.
A “Service” is WAY different than an “Oil Change”… so yeah, more labor and materials will cost more. The other option is to buy all the tools and hope you don’t destroy it in your garage…it’s usually cheaper to have a pro work on it.
This video is about comparing four (4) services done on a Spyder and this dealer's billing practices, billing for 2.5 hrs labor, for 1.25 hrs actual work, so you may have missed the point of this video.
Gotcha coming and going. My local mechanic has me buy the parts so that I own the warranties and save their shop markup. But when I do, their labor rate jumps $25 an hour. So it all comes around and bites us customers in the Arse!
I am doing my own servicing and maintenance. I don't like being told what oil and filters (both air and oil) I have to use and I don't like book times for a job. It would have been nice if I could have told my boss that it only me an hour to do a job but I was charging him two hours because it took Joe in the next office that long to do the same job. $159 an hour labor costs? I know everyone does that but the mechanic probably doesn't get as much as $59 for that hour and a $100 to pay the costs of the rest of the shop? I wonder. Many dealerships only survive because of the outrageous charges on parts and service. That is not to say they don't make a lot of money off sales, its just that they don't make enough sales. Why? Because the mark up is unreasonable. You can make a lot of money per unit for a few sales or a little money per unit for a lot of sales. Admittedly the first is easier and so that is the way the entire industry has gone. I used to own a Volvo. Everything was expensive but there was this diminutive eccentric Swede who ran a shop in the town I then lived in, that serviced and sold parts for Volvo's only. He did not sell the cars. I could have my car serviced for about 60% of what the dealer charged and parts cost about 75%. The quality was above and beyond what the provided and the customers lined up outside the door. Was he rich like the dealership owners? Certainly not but he was happy, beloved and respected.
My first 3 services were $350 to $400 and the service includes many things listed in the CanAm owner's manual, in addition to the oil change. I posted this video, simply to show what some dealers do to jack up the price, so for $505 this dealer won't get my business again. I'm lucky I have 4 or 5 dealers within 100 miles to choose from. If a dealer is telling you $700 for an oil change, stay AWAY from that scam dealer for any type business !!!
Yep, but I can only do some of maintenance service, including the oil change which I will do myself, but I don't have the special tools, or the knowledge to do all the schedule maintenance servicing that BRP has listed for the Spyder.
I can do the oil change, and some of the inspection items as well. But there are some items I don't have a clue how to measure/adjust/verify nor do I have access to BRP's BUDs diagnostics system.
I had a first service done at a dealer . Really nothing more than an oil change and was handed a bill over $600.00. Never again. Most of it was labor. Never again.
I do my own oil change in my shed, it takes 45 minutes that's including a check over the bike... They do rip us of and these bikes have lots of foreign parts for example tie rod ends made in China should cost $120,00 NZD but no you can't just buy the ends but the rod as well $680.00 NZD The electric hand brake motor $978.00 NZD made in Taiwan these are just the price for parts its madness
I've always taken my bikes to the dealer for service while it's still under warranty. This video was the 1st service on my new Spyder, and it was the first (and last) time at this dealer.
I buy a $15 filter kit with the O-rings from Amazon and use Rotella T6 at $24/gallon. Oil change is less than $50. Yes, they dealers suck because they know that none of the other independent shops in your town don't want anything to do with them. And then, a lot of dealers won't work on you 10+ year old Spyder! Really? Then why sell them at all? Imagine Toyota or any car manufacturer's dealerships say, "We don't work on your 2014 Camry." Really? Last one I buy then. I hope BRP listens to their customers. The dealerships are getting ridiculous.
This particular dealer will not see me again, oil changes I will plan on doing myself, most of the other scheduled maintenance services will be done at an authorized dealer, at least until after the 2 yr warranty expires. Some dealers just aren't good at generating loyal return customers.
Sorry but I would bash any dealer that rips off their customers with those fricken high prices. Hate is not a word I use loosely, but I hate it when dealers and BRP rip us off. Take your car or pick-up to a quicky lube, Walmart or a reputable dealer for an oil & filter change using full synthetic oil and a quality filter. If you pay $100 it's very rare, it's usually around $75 . Now that's high compare to $39.99 before the dam pandemic. We are victims of American GREED. Everywhere we turn today, greedy bastoids are getting to our pockets taking more of our hard earned money. Corporate greed has taken over America today. I've had a couple of Spyder RT LTs, I love these machines, but the dealers and BRP make me sick with their fricken high prices for service and parts. They advertise to the average person then rake us over the coals sucking our life's blood out of us, so they can live high on the hog. It's not rocket science doing the service on our Spyders, but they warn us against not having a dealer do the service, fearing we void our questionable warranties at best. Thank you for bring this travesty out into the open. Be fore warned, owning a Spyder is going to be expensive ....... Oh yea, $143.99 for a $55 oil change kit, no mater where you go, is PRICE FIXING and it's against the law. BRP punishes dealers who don't follow their strict pricing. That's pure BS.
This is my 2nd Soyder, and I'll likely own one until I can no longer ride, and yes, parts and maintenance are not cheap... on pretty much most bikes. 👍
That would probably be a waste of time. The dealer did provide an estimate of $505, and I authorized them to go ahead and do the service, and I was billed the $505 that they quoted. If you want to fight that charge after the work is done, that is between you and the dealer. The state will see that the dealer provided a quote, received authorization to go ahead, and billed exactly what they quoted. Maybe in your state, the state might try and do something for you, but I believe it would be a complete waste of time in my state. My recourse is to find another dealer.
I DO think that you are wrong and far too forgiving! Dealers that clearly rip off their customers DO need bashing! It's the only way that customers can begin to get a fair deal. Yes - they do need to make a living but so does the customer. You have willingly given them money, that you were deceived into paying - and the dishonest dealer has accepted the money under false pretences - for work that they did not do. Nothing, at all reasonable about what you were charged - that 75 minute (Two and a half hours??) service would have been fair at half the price and the dealers would still be in profit and able to pay their workers. What you experienced was unreasonable and exploitative - greed and exploitation like this needs advertising - NAME AND SHAME - they will soon realise that the number of mugs left to con have rapidly dwindled and will be forced to be HONEST!
Wow ! I agree, Can am is starting to sound like a Harley service !!!
Even the cost of the oil change kit is ridiculous! This is exactly why I would now not buy a Spyder. The dealers are killing the market for the product. Thanks for the clarity.
Hi Wayne,
Just took my bike in for the "end of season" check up and oil change.
That's ridiculous. I change my own oil for the simple facts that dealerships are common thieves
Great video Wayne...folks may or may not know about this and something to be aware of for sure...
I babbled and blah blah blah'd to beat the band, I was shocked how long the footage was when I was done, I cut out twice as much as what I left in. I hope some folks find it interesting 🤪🥴😄🤣
@@SpyderWayne I'm sure they will!
Can Am is starting to sound like a Harley Davidson dealership 😬👍
Not just Harley, I believe for any dealership, you either love 'em or hate 'em.
It's A Canada Harley . they just as proud of them
Start doing its yourself.
$214.00 here in North Texas for my 2022 Can-Am F3 oil change. I just had it done Friday and picked it up Saturday afternoon.
Excellent 😁👍
It is frustrating isn’t it. I had a headlight go out on my 18rtl. The dealer wanted $400 labor plus bulbs to repair. I asked since you have to take the bike apart to change the bulbs can you give me a break on the oil change. They declined. So I would have been looking at around $800 for the job. I decided to try and do it myself. Watched UA-cam’s ordered the oil kit and new led bulbs and tools for about $300. Learned a lot and saved $500. Will not be back to the dealer who sold me the bike. Sad but true.
That's a shame, especially since it was the dealer where you bought the Spyder. Kudos to you for your cost savings DIY solution 😁👍👍
Good for you, Ray!!
The dealers are killing their own trade - nobody else to blame but themselves and their GREED!
Absolutely 👊😁👍
@@SpyderWayne My Can-Am dealer also owns the HD shop too.
Wholly cow 😳😳😳 and the one experience that would drive me crazy is a month waiting for your Spyder.
I also have an elaborate spreadsheet detailing everything ever done on my bike. I am a numbers guy also. My previous post was long, but trust me, I had a lot more detail I could have provided!@@SpyderWayne
@stanweaver You know what Stan, I believe you 😁 ... a fellow spreadsheet geek 👊🤓👍
I am sure this is why many people just do it themselves..... i used to.
I can do some of the scheduled maintenance, but some things I can't do. Thanks, Fraser 😁
I absolutely would have disputed both the labor hours billed and the shop fee. When we don’t stand up for ourselves we keep getting abused.
@childofthe60s100 You're absolutely right, and I won't ever go back yo that dealer, their loss of business, I'm sure I'm one of many.
@@childofthe60s100 Online bashing, not worth it for me. My local riding friends know who the dealer is 😁👍
The motor cycle manufacturers don't seem to understand that their failure to control the gouging at the dealerships will have the long term effect of destroying the hobby.
Something to think about... if the manufacturers cut-off business with dealers who "embelish" on the prices they charge customers, I wonder how many dealers would be left ? 🤔😳😄
The control on price gouging is in the hands of the consumer. Spread the word communicate and vacate any dealer who does so.
@@michaelrocole7174 👊😎👍
Your dealer sounds like the dealer we all wish we could have, thanks Richard 👊😁👍
I know it is done right and save myself a lot of money 😀
Thank you for sharing this video though maybe it will help someone else to understand the cost of an oil change at a stealer.😂
Absolutely, dealer praise is always welcome. I hear there's a very good dealer in Hanover PA 😁😂👍
@@SpyderWayne you betcha!! 💜🤗
Well, if you go to a Goodyear Auto Service in any state, you will be charged a book standard rate. I audited those locations for 10 years.
Thank you so much. I found and sub'd your channel a couple weeks ago, I think it was your video about switching from a Tri-Glide to a Spyder 👊😁👍
Man oh man, you would make Spyder owners very happy if you had an oil change kit (to spec) for under $60
The XPS kit comes with 5 snd a half qts of oil (my Spyder takes more oil than my car 🤪), oil filter, 2 crush washers for the 2 drain plugs, and five (5) O-rings, all 5 of them are different... and yeah that kit costs us $143.99 🙄🤪😩
Yeah. I hate that book rate stuff. Just charge me labor for the amount of time that you labored on my bike! Good video
I'm retired now, but imagine if I had treated my employer the same way, work 1/2 days, but expect a full day's pay... 😳😄🤣🤣
Thanks Wayne@@SpyderWayne
Woah! You made out, they forgot to charge you $55.50 for "hazardous material disposal".
Are you sure that's not buried in the $150 extra labor they charged me? 🤔 😂
Good stuff 👊😁👍
At 55, I can still do the work myself but doesn't mean I want to. lol
For the oil
$28.00 total at Walmart
For the filter kit
$20.00 Amazon
Yep, Walmart sells cheap oil 🤣
It's frustrating Wayne.
Yep, that's for sure 🤪
The new Spyders are so simple to change your own oil. Takes maybe 30 minutes. I uses full synthetic motorcycle oil and not over priced BRP oil. I change every 5K Miles.
The bigger savings is the overpriced dealer labor 👍
the first checkup is always expensive. the others are more around 200. but then only every 15,000km but that is in canada
Well, you have a good dealer. In this video, I showed the costs of the first 3 services on my first Spyder plus this $505 cost of the first service on my new Spyder, I didn’t get so lucky.
@@SpyderWayne yes I know, I find that horrible. Here the average is 109,00$ cnd
Make an appointment with Kraken's garage, and it will cost $143.99. 🦑
I appreciate that, and it'll probably happen on one of my trips. Thanks, Eric 😁👍
🤗😄💜
yup, my dealer charges $162/hr. and that XPS 5w40 4t semi-synth oil change kit from Amazon is $143. so thats completive with the dealer. However you can get 6qt of Castrol 4t 5w40 full synth for $47, the oil filter kit for $18. That all well and good if one had the means to get under the ride. fortunately we only buy the accessories once.
The oil change by itself is very DIY do-able. The other inspections, and adjustments, I'm not good at.
@@n6dl321@n6dl321 You, Sir, are an example of why the Spyder can be for everyone 👊😁👍
I think if they are gonna charge that much per hour for service, then they damn well ought to charge for the actual shop time.
They are getting paid because they are that good right?
"That good"... is in the eye of the beholder 🤔😳😄
@@SpyderWayne I should have put that in quotation marks.. lol

Im re thinking of buying one due to these radical maintenance/ service expenses.
I hear ya! This was an ouch for sure 😖🤪
The actual time of shop servicing on my Spyder has been fairly consistent. Unfortunately, the billable time has not.
I have a 2023 Spyder RTL. My question is, how do you really really know that they changed the oil? If you are walking around the show room floor or waiting in the waiting room. How do you know they really did the service? I am the type of person that likes to go in the back to see the work getting done. Especially at that crazy price.
I dunno, maybe request that your dealer to video record the service if you're really in doubt.
The dealer didn't do anything wrong BULL SHIT HE RIP YOU OFF. Same old story never trust them.
Yeah, many people would agree with you. Unfortunately, this practice is not uncommon... it's been around for decades 😂
Pay to play ... that's a good way to describe it 😁👌👍
Wayne, i will coment only on cost.
@@SpyderWayne 😁😁😁😁😆😆😆😆😆😆
June 2023 Spyder RTL oil change at dealer in VT. $102 for individual components vs oil kit, $105 for 1 hr labor. $207 total. This was on a 2022 RTL.
That's a great deal, especially if the dealer does all the other BRP required services at each scheduled maintenance service 😁👍
@@SpyderWayne I’m sure it was just the oil change. That’s all I asked to have done. I don’t put a lot of miles on per season.
@@robertlarrabee9115 Still a great price 😁
We got a new spyder last year. Servicing is $1600 US, but that’s pre paid for the first 5 years, or something like that. I still think it was a good deal.
Based on what I've spent .. over $1,600 for 4 services, your prepaid deal sounds very good 😁👍
Yikes. The 20-24 RT's are the easiest to change the oil. I do realize he should have done an inspection, too. I put the Baja Ron ultimate sway bar on my 21' RTL, I bet the labor would be tremendous on that.
That would certainly be a sure bet 😄👍
I changed my own oil for the cost of the oil change kit, $143. Still too high imho.
Last summer I took my bike to the Triumph dealership for a brake job and they charged me appropriately (but initially they said it would take 2 hours and I said … “I am not a mechanic but I can change the pads in less than 1 so I am sure you folks can do better” so they quote me 1.25 hours but then the hourly rate was 185.00 (I am not sure if they increased that to match the 2 hour standard rate or not)
The point is …. They will catch you either way.
How you doing Eddie 😁 Are you familiar with the term "BOHICA" ? Your dealer appears to be familiar with that term 🤔😄🤣
2 and 1/2 hours for 1:15 mins work ???
In my opinion, that criminal
Who wrote the book rate ? Can am or Harley
Haha... or... are some dealers "marking up" those rates 😡🤬🤣🤣
can am is pricing alot of people out.

Nice hah
@JamesMartin-rr5tn Another example of a dealer who is putting the boots to its customers
I know the feeling, I recently had my first service done on my motorcycle and it cost $435
Some dealers are just outragious !!
Stay away from dealers for any parts or service unless sourcing elsewhere is impossible. Support your local independent shop.
If you can find a local independent shop that can service a Spyder, then you are very lucky. A motorcycle service technician that's never ridden a Spyder, will not even know how to start the engine. 🤔🙄😄
@@SpyderWayne Very true!
Yikes, this is definitely making me wary of getting a Can-Am. Oof.
You just might find this kind of billing practice in any auto or motorcycle service shop, The key point is to find a shop you like and trust. 👊😎👍
Buy the maintenance package ! Oil changes will be free plus roadside assistance and more !!
With that said, you should've included how much that maintenance package cost you. You don't think you get gouged there? Nothing is ever free.
Dealer are not only destroying their franchise, they are destroying their brand. I switched from Harley to a Goldwing for this exact reason, I got tired of getting screwed by Harley. Ended up with a much much much better bike.
If I had a bigger garage, I'd definitely add a Goldwing to it... and a Road Glide, and a Bonneville ... 🤔🙄😄👌👍
If people would stop doing these crazy priced services, they would lower them!
👊😁👍
Sounds to me like you have been ripped off! Those labour charges seem excessive, so as you say, probably best to shop around.
Yeah, this dealer gave me a reason never to go back there... makes me wonder how many others never go back.😎👍
Can your average shade tree mechanic change the oil or do you need special tools? I think $550.00 is theft.
My Harley first service and the 2 after that were 400$ CAD , I do my own now 100$ for oil and filter......
I need to go to Spyder school 😂
Ay yi yi... shops have all kinds of tricks up their sleeves 😳😂👍
Awesome comment 😁👍
I was going to get a spyder the dealer told me it would be $700 for every oil change i changed my mind really quick.they are just ripping people off.
Thats a tough pill to swallow man . I'm thinking that could be some good incentive to consider what it might take to do it yourself .
Yep, but I can only do some of maintenance service, including the oil change which I will do myself, but I don't have the special tools, or the knowledge to do all the schedule maintenance servicing that BRP has listed for the Spyder.
Why not change your own oil?
I can do the oil change, and some of the inspection items as well. But there are some items I don't have a clue how to measure/adjust/verify nor do I have access to BRP's BUDs diagnostics system.
I was lucky I only paid $435. The closest dealer for on road is 160 miles away.
Pricing is all over the place depending on the dealer 🤔🤪😁👍
I got charged $1800 for breaks and rotors! And they had my bike for almost two weeks.
Ooouch 😳😵💫
And that's just a middle-of-the-road oil change for a Spyder... There are changes that cost more and changes that cost less.
Yeah, there are some major maintenance services that will be expensive down the road.
Be glad you don’t have a Harley.
Alright then, I will consider alternates. Not cool with the straight charges.
I certainly didn't expect this $500+ service from... well, you probably know who 😉🤫

Oh, and "Ride Safe!" This is the same thing as Disneyland/world characters saying "Have a Disney day!"
This particular dealer will not see me again, oil changes I will plan on doing myself, most of the other scheduled maintenance services will be done at an authorized dealer, at least until after the 2 yr warranty expires. Some dealers just aren't good at generating loyal return customers.
Thank you, 😁👍
$759 for an oil change that I will be doing myself for now on flamming dragon heat mad!!
Wholly crap, that's 50% higher than the ridiculously high amount I paid. Some dealers just don't seem to care about loyal or repeat customers 😳
Everywhere we turn today, greedy bastoids are getting to our pockets taking
more of our hard earned money.
If it’s popular, service is expensive. Signed; Harley Rider. The kicker? $120/hr
It’s BS for 500- many are about 350 - I hear techs say if u play u pay! Up price bc they can
My advice is to watch UA-cam videos and do the job yourself, and save lots of money 💰 on labor. Welcome to America.
I can do the oil change, no problem. It's a bunch of the other stuff that BRP wants done that is a challenge.
gee, u don't think they do this in other countries ? ? ?
I changed the oil on my 21 RTL last December. I bought the kit including oil for about $115 from BajaRon.
You got a pretty deal 👊😎👍
Car dealers haffe bff een doing the samething for years.
It's a common practice in many auto service businesses.
$50.00 and thirty minutes! DONE.!!!

make a formal complaint with the state. They over charged you.
You do you, I do me 😁👍
They billed exactly what their estmate was, it's a common practice, I authorized it, and they lost my business.
