I need that katsu sandwich. On your list of restaurants it has okonomiyaki but if it doesn't say it's vegetarian it usually has dashi. There's a restaurant in Harajuku called Sakura Tei that has vegetarian ones that I really want to go to!
Good point, thank you! I've added a note :-) To me, the batter doesn't taste of fish or dashi, so I'm ok with it, but everyone has a different feeling of what they're comfortable with, so it's good to know so you can make a choice. Sakuratei looks great, it's been on my list for a while but I haven't made it there yet. Let me know how it is if you go! :-)
My mouth is watering watching this and thinking about Ts Tan Tan - I love it so much I went to both of them on my last trip! They do have the katsu sandwiches at the Tokyo branch as part of a little set meal but I'm not sure if they have them to take away like the do in the Ueno branch. Thanks for the informative video, finding it took a little while so I'm sure it'll really help people knowing where to go.
I'd happily eat there every day! :-) I went to the one (randomly) in Sendai last week - just as good as the others, and saw they now have one at Narita Airport (I was excited until I remembered I was flying out from Haneda...!) :-)
Thanks for another Great video. I was a bit worried about eating alone in Tokyo but when you look around lots of people are on their own. Nothing to worry about.
@@cakeswithfaces I sure will! I'm from the UK and I saw your post about one opening in Leicester square, so I might see if I can go to London and try it out.
Thanks for another informative and intimate post! I'm planning to base a Tokyo trip in Ueno because there is so much to see just in the park, so as a vegan I am happily looking forward to trying everything at T's, knowing there will always be something good available locally. And thanks to both of you for making travel vlogs while not being Fakes With Cases 😸
Haha thank you! Seriously I wanted to try everything at T's TanTan! I tried the black sesame ramen too recently - also good but the golden sesame's still my fav! You can get it as a set with gyoza or vegan kara age, yum!
Thanks, Amy! I'd seen other branches of T's Tantan reviewed by several vegans on UA-cam, and they all rated the food highly 💮 Did you ask them to stock the new Catsu Curry tops? Ts @ T's?
It's a very helpful and informative video, more than a lot of others I've seen! P.S. How much better is the ramen in Japan when compared with the options in London?
Thanks! I'd say there is excellent ramen in the UK (what you get at Wagamama isn't really authentic Japanese ramen - although it is tasty!).The difference in Japan is that it's cheaper, and there's more variety in the types of ramen you can get at different places. Restaurants tend to have small menus and specialise in just ramen - they do one thing, and do it well! Sushi, however, is far better in Japan, even cheap sushi!
Interesting 🤔 did have Ichiran on the long list of places to eat just never made it. Doesn’t sound like I miss out on much 😀 looking forward to the rest of the vids 👍🇬🇧🏴
Thanks! Lots of people like Ichiran and there's always a queue outside. But you can get better ramen from just a random ramen place! Conclusion: try ALL the ramens! :-)
Thanks! It'll be hot & humid in summer so be prepared! My favs in Kyoto are Fushimi Inari Shrine and Gion (it had a lot more atmosphere than the famous old streets Ninenzaka and Sanenzaka that were packed with tourists). I also loved Miyajima, which you can go to on a day trip from Kyoto. As for Tokyo, what are you interested in doing/seeing?
I feel that it's easier to be vegan in Japan than people think. Especially in Tokyo there are many restaurants that are 100% vegan, just use the Happycow app!
Happy Cow's so useful! If you know what you're doing and do some preparation it's fine - but if you go walking around the streets looking at menus and hoping to find something it can be very frustrating!! :-)
Thanks, I'm new to your series and absolutely love your videos! We're planning for a trip in about a year, and your videos have been invaluable! Do you happen to know if Ichiran has a veggie friendly broth?
Thanks so much! :-) Sadly no vegetarian at Ichiran! You might find my list helpful - they're restaurants in Tokyo with veggie options - several ramen places on there. I'll be updating it soon with all the new places I've found so check back soon! www.cakeswithfaces.co.uk/blog-2/vegetarian-restaurants-in-japan/
This video just saved my life! I was a little upset that I might not be able to try ramen but I'm so happy now! Also would you happen to know if they are okay with bringing luggage in? I'll be getting off at ueno station and definitely want to try this
Ah so happy you'll be able to try it! There are actually quite a few places that serve veggie/vegan ramen - you wouldn't necessarily come across them by chance but if you look for them, they're there! But T's TanTan is my favourite! Yes, I think they'd be ok with bringing luggage in - it's not an absolutely tiny place like some restaurants are in Tokyo. Here's my list of restaurants in Tokyo with veggie options, you might find it helpful: www.cakeswithfaces.co.uk/japan/vegetarian-restaurants-in-japan/ A couple of the other ramen places are in this playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PL-YXkErUfa4k_Ze2CFe9ccbvYefWCUoE4.html
@@MegaBlepper Ooh exciting! I wonder if they'll have Christmas decorations on the plane?? :-) Enjoy T's TanTan - my fav is the golden sesame ramen but I want to try everything on the menu!!!
Our first jetlagged day in Tokyo was by Tokyo station and we spent an hour looking for that place, unfortunately we gave up as we was so tired and bewildered, we're pescatarians that like to eat vegan when we can so had more choice in Japan that yourself but still struggled to find any ramen that we could eat over there. The only time I did have some "rice cake and vegetable ramen" it still had a massive piece of pork in it lol
Tokyo Station's huge isn't it! If you want veggie ramen you have to know where to go - you won't come across it by chance. I learnt that from many hours of walking around hungry looking at menus! While it's fun to be spontaneous, it's a lot less frustrating to research places to go beforehand if you're on a particular diet :-)
Not sure - the allergens are marked on the menu and from the pics I took, the noodle dishes have wheat in the noodles. There are one or two rice dishes though - especially at the Ueno branch, and at the back of the menu there's an english language table that tells you clearly about all the allergens.
It's my fav anywhere! They also had veggie tonkotsu & several others. It wasn't a fake meat I recognised - it had more chewy texture than quorn. It wasn't tofu... might be seitan (I've not tried that so wouldn't recognise it!).

Yes it's perfectly normal there, no need to feel self-conscious! :-)
