I gave myself a 70th birthday present six years ago and hired Tom to play in my backyard in Amador City, Ca. for my wife and I and about 100 of our best friends. I was able to get him on an evening following a night he had done a gig in Ferndale Ca. and was going to play the Genoa Nevada Cowboy Poetry Festival the next evening. I’ve seen him many times, but that night in the yard was unforgettable. Oh, and we went to Genoa the next day to see him again.

The lyrical prowess of Tom Russell is so painfully under-appreciated in the world of American music and the American Songbook, that it is at times painful to listen to such a brilliant man. A man who, with an old guitar can transport you, he can dissect you,r very being, and speak volumes to your soul, turning into sunshine but also into rain. All his pain, suffering, loss, love, wonder and magic. A life beholden solely to Tom Russell, an American original in the truest sense of the word. Guys like Johnny Cash are geniuses as well, but they get their fair share. However for whatever reason the world doesn’t seem to know or appreciate Tom Russell. I don’t let that take away the beauty and his pros. He wraps a tapestry of lyrical magic around you like a warm blanket, And he doesn’t let you go until you’re ready to fly The lyrical prowess of Tom Russell is so painfully under-appreciated in the world of American music and the American Songbook, that it is at times painful to listen to such a brilliant man. He tells you their stories, but he never lectures. It’s always the lines in between the lines matter.Thank you Tom, and keep on hustlin’.

Hey Neil. Any idea the make and model of Toms guitar. Most interested in size. It resembles a Gibson 175

@@johnlabbe1964 Hi John: I'm no expert on guitars but I do know Tom has spoken in the past about having a Gibson LG1 from 1946 - does that mean something to you? Not sure if this is the one that had the hole shot in it on the road to Bayamon, but I can recall Tom talking about how easy it was to come across good guitars in pawn shops during his early years on the road. I think the black guitar he seemed to use for years was a Collings: at one point he had three of their guitars - there was smaller black one (he called it a slot head parlour guitar (probably "parlor" guitar to American friends)and I believe there was another which he called an OM1: at one stage he was looking to sell but I don't know whether that happened. I haven't seen the smaller one for some tiome - think he got it because it was easier to travel with.

@@neilcoupland7275 you right about the black collings. I got the Es175 confused with one of the Gibson J series. The 175 us a cutaway. The one Tom is using here appears to be a parlor
