It's a mark of their respect for each other that, on Nanci Grifffiths' great folk album "other Voices, Other Rooms" Tom sang one of Ian's songs and Ian sang one of Tom's.

Ian left a huge whole in the world when he left.

I can't remember the year but I was a part of the first song writers workshop Ian Tyson did in Elko at the Poetry Gathering. It was the best musical experience I've ever had. There were 25 of us so Ian divided us into 5 groups of 5 and told us to collaborate on a song about the changing West. My group had a man & wife who were writers and later wrote a story about the workshop for Atlantic Monthly, A young guy that grew up in Nw Jersey and moved to Washington to be a cowboy, a Veterinary assistant from Hawaii, and me.
Tom Brokaw was there to do something about the Gathering & Ian. Ian said "No, it's about them." meaning the folks in the class. Ian moved among the groups, listened, commented, made suggestions, and inspired. We worked all day the first day and the next day we performed our songs. There were 5 good ones. Brokaw wanted one for his TV show. Ian chose my group. The Jersey Cowboy & the horse doctor were better guitar players than me so they played. I did a little harmonica lead in and sang our song. It was on the Brokaw show. I wish I could find it somewhere. My friend recorded it but it was lost. The best thing was at the next year at Elko I was walking with my wife & sons at the Gathering an Ian Tyson crossed the room with someone else in tow to talk to me about the workshop. He remembered me? He was doing a second one and I wish I had been in it. What a great man. I am so lucky!

I have just found this wonderful video - I also discovered here that my very favourite Western writer and performer,Ian Tyson, has passed away - I am heartbroken to learn that - There will never be another like Ian for me - His classics with Sylvia and later solo with the Gords will never die - So sad today and every day now - RIP to someone so very special, a true cowboy - John Hawkins a follower since the 60s

Ian did "Rambler Gambler" on thaty first LP with just his voice and a simple guitar strummed like this version. Sylvia sat this one out. It was one of my favourite cuts on that record.

This is a classic! Ian was the best and is the best. I think it was 1961, maybe 62 that I first heard Ian and Sylvia, outstanding!

Great song and cowboy singer. Reminds me of my namesake, KD Reeves, rancher South of Santa Fe NM, after Louisiana and West Texas. Used to buy cattle from Texas, raced his horses with fellow ranchers, and enjoyed watching his cowhands try to break horses. His wife, my maternal Grandmother, told me how he taught a horse to watch the starter's trigger finger on the starting gun and got a jump on the other horses. She said they won a fair amount of money on his horses. I went back to where he was buried in Cottonport, LA and switched out his gravestone with the one his daughters had made which was too flowery. And, replaced it with one of him roping wild horses in a box canyon and noted, "The Last of the Real Cowboys." Kellus Sewell

Met Ian twice at " Esmereldas" cowboy disco at Lethbridge Lodge many years ago, what an incredible Albertan.

Love the music and the conversation, the great songs, and the presentation of the songs. I do want to point out one thing -- Tom says the that they, whoever they is, "edited out" the Gospel of Thomas, Actually, it was never a part of the Bible but was one of the so-called "Gnostic gospels" that were regarded as scurrilous and not included in any list of canonical books.

Off note about an alleged conversation between Cohen and Dylan. Dylan was asked. How long he took to write one of his tombs. The answer was 15 minutes whereas Cohen had one of greats still in process for two years. Even Dylan could barely explain his gift and missed when it faded. But still he stayed in the game and still is.

Anybody remember the Capital Record club, one of my first one was Ian & Sylvia "Where the short grass grows" on 8 track. Didn't have a car or an 8 track! Enjoyed that, later on loved "Old Corrals and Sagebrush". Didn't discover Tom Russel until about 12 years and am impressed by everything. Surprised me, 6 years ago I was long hauling to Texas. Doing our re-sets in Channelview Tx. Introduced the local crowd to "Who's gonna build your Wall" .

Dylan definitely wrote most of his songs. That's what made him one of the greatest.
