My favourite story is the one that fully turned me into a Whovian.
      Death in Heaven.
9 year old me sat down and watched it after being invested by Capaldi since Deep Breath and Dark Water/Death in Heaven sold me as a Whovian.
While Colin Baker might be my favourite Doctor and despite watching the show since Tennant and Smith, Peter Capaldi will always be my true first Doctor.
Death in Heaven is just honestly a Underrated story and despite the controversy around "Dont Cremate me" I fucking enjoy that story still even nearly 10 years later.

It's amazing how a single episode can have such a profound impact on becoming a Whovian. Capaldi's performance truly shines in Death in Heaven! Mine has got to be "Listen"! Not only is Capaldi my favorite Doctor and Clara my favorite Companion but I adore the concept of a creature that might not even be there yet just the thought of something hiding so perfectly, noone can be sure of it existing or not and noone can be sure whether it'd be evil, is enough to make you affraid.
Also I love the evening/night setting of this episode and Clara's speech at the end is perfection.

I find it funny how for the longest time, while it was airing, the Twelfth Doctor's era "had something missing" and "was too rushed" and "Capaldi was let down by the writing", and now it's bundled together with the Smith era in that it could do no wrongs (and don't get me wrong, both had some absolute bangers, but in general it's not better or worse than Thirteens's era, although, personally, Eleven's ranks lower). A time will come where Thirteen's era will be fully appreciated more broadly, like Twelve's, which was too harshly judged at the time too.

    • @TardisTalks
      @TardisTalks  9 днів тому +1

I can agree with this, but there is definaitly something about chibnals era that is missing something, I don't know what it is.. the writing seems all over the place for Jodies Doctor also one minute its like she is channeling 9 then the next she has a fez on channeling 11, there is something off with it but I do plan on rewatching all 3 series of Jodie again and doing a deep dive into this so subscribe if you wanna hear my thoughts on that when it comes out.. my perspective on it may change.

My very first TV memory was Jon Pertwee fighting a Sontaran in a medieval castle and then watching him regenerate into Tom Baker. What Doctor Who has over shows like Star Trek (and I do like Star Trek) is that it’s given itself to be essentially the same show with the same character. The Doctor, the Tardis and companions is the template. In fact The Doctor is always the Doctor, no matter what he/she looks like. Captain Kirk is different from Picard who is different from Janeway. Their ships are different. You have to watch to see if you’re onboard with those differences. Doctor Who as a show actually regenerates, it’s different but the same. In your head, any doctor could swapped out to do any adventure and maintain the characters moral code. Whereas Kirk may punch you in the face while Picard may be more diplomatic. It’s the greatest show in the world and continues because they can be anywhere and any time. Plus, issues are solved by being clever rather than shooting a gun. Something that makes it pretty unique.

yeah I agree and this is a good video describing and telling the subject in a nutshell with an accurate and good thumbnail but there's also lots of more into /about this subject and it's depths that even this comment is not gonna cover even nearly to the fullest limit.
Doctor who's structure as a show is different and it is a really unique and special one different from the rest, it can survive in many forms and can be made and upkept by fans in many ways and forms. it can cover and explore many things and many genres without being locked by one genre or aspect, even though imo and it basically is that most of the time that there's a sci-fi background in everything as there should be as that is easily over the rest and can explain much of the things by reason, and also dr who as a show is also easily above the rest and among the best tv shows, dr who can be and is everything and is already really much, with an extensive path of multiple alternate timelines/universes with many dimensions and variations of things in many forms of media and it should stay that way, with nearly everything being a part of the multiverse/whoniverse even if it is unofficial.
and it's just brilliant with lots of things and complexity, with many layers and themes along with a correct and good way of teaching ethics and lots of other good qualities and lessons too, that more people should strive for/be like/act in accordance to, it also can be more than a tv show, it can be a way of life, and then there's the community which should always stay welcoming and kind to new arriving viewers/fans and then if it is welcomed, also helpful to the new people giving tid bits of context and the community has actually been that for long so what I'm saying is that I hope it stays that way, and that the social media haters/people who are just completely wrong by fact should and shall be silenced with their misinformation.

Personally I don't think that the chipnall era and the Timeless child arc was bad and should be removed. But it definitely wasn't good.
I feel like the stories had potential, but certain elements like bad first time decisions and big issues that kind of brought them down. I do genuinely feel like there was and is a chance with the timeless child arc and the stories that chipnall brought to the table.
The timless children arc was really just not ideal because it introduced a big change to the doctor's background and just didn't explore it at all. I like the idea of their being more incarnations before Hartnell and am glad that chipnall worked in an old thread like the morbius doctors.
The fact that the doctor had more lives before doesn't necessarily affect the classic or the new who series.
I just feel that the execution wasn't ideal for introducing a whole new background for a well established character, especially the doctor, who is arguably the main and most important character.

    • @TardisTalks
      @TardisTalks  14 днів тому +3

I appreciate your balanced view on the Chibnall era and the Timeless Child arc. It's important to consider both the potential and the execution of these storylines.

    • @AzurePastel007
      @AzurePastel007 14 днів тому +2

@@TardisTalks agreed. Some people think that the chipnall era should be retconned. But if that happens then it wouldn't be fair to those who do like that era and also the ones who worked on it even though that certain aspects were weighing down the production.
Personally I always just have a head canon on certain things that don't make sense or even how the episodes that had potential and did kinda fall flat on their face happened. For example I always thought that there should have been more focus on yaz.
Starting off with Ryan on a UA-cam video never really sat right for me. Same with Ryan's dyspraxia, which could have been really good for character development but instead was just thrown away in the next episode when he immediately shot rapid fire on those sniper robots. Speaking of which I feel certain elements were a bit on the nose and weren't really introduced properly.
A better way that could have helped the era become more developed would be to have more of a focus on Yaz. Introducing Yaz's struggle with people and her job and even her thoughts would have given more depth to the relationship she created with the Doctor. Before the doctor Yaz could have been struggling emotionally and then now that Yaz knows the doctor, and travels with her she can finally find a difference. Especially The woman who fell to earth would have gained from this angle. We start on Yaz's life and problems. She wants something different that can really test her.
The episode would happen similarly to how it happened in the show. Except with more depth and more structural.
I feel Jodie was good just weighed down by certain things that were changed about the doctor and the writing, even though the writing did have some potential.
For example the doctor being socially awkward even though that their are MULTIPLE moments where the doctor does the exact opposite. I do think that the doctor now having social issues is good just it needs a reason that the doctor is no longer able to comfort their companion. I do get that the doctor has had some social issues over the years that were just introduced randomly but the fact that the doctor is in a private conversation with Graham and listens to his concerns with cancer and can't comfort him on his worries when it's cancer just confuses me.
When previous times when the doctor is literally dieing and takes the time to comfort their companion or even when that moment where the doctor is literally betrayed by their companion and basically blackmailed to save the companions partner and still helps them because they understand that they are going through a similar situation of grief and anger to the ones the doctor has gone through and also just because they care for their companion.. again its not bad but its not good either. Considering the potential is quite important in a show about possibilities for not just life but also relationships and events.
The 13th doctor although Jodie did portray them to the best that was possible, just felt shallow, not cause of the acting, cause there is great scenes jodie was able to pull off, but just because of poor decisions and problems behind the scenes. Like lockdown or having to many characters like you said in the video.
I still think Jo Martin's Doctor deserves a spinoff though; cause she was amazing, and definitely brought life to her incarnation.

Doctor Who has been my favourite TV series since I first saw it in 1989, as a 7 year old. The very first story I saw was "Meglos". It started with a weird thing where two of the characters kept repeating what they were doing, which intrigued me. And then in Part Three Tom Baker turned into a cactus. I was HOOKED. The next story, "Full Circle" introduced Adric, who my prepubescent homosexual brain was drawn to. Not in a humpy way, I just thought he was... beautiful.... but, I digress.
I agree that Bill Potts was woefully and almost criminally under rated. I loved her and Nardole and was very distraught that they didn't get longer on the show.

As a writer of fan fiction, I will add that Dr Who is a superb story-telling engine with one of the most unique characters in fiction. You can tell any story with Dr Who, it works in any medium.

The entire Chibs run I was a Chibnall apologist. I tried defending it. I would say: “he’s still setting it up guys, wait for the payoff”. Then I realized there was no pay off, Chibs was just feeding us garbage.
Between Capaldi’s run and jodies run. I owned all of modern who and all but 4 stories from classic who. So I watched my dvd collection in order, from an unearthly child to twice upon a time. I was blown away by the sheer number of stories in a row (for classic who) that I would considered good/great/amazing. The longest streak was 30 stories (not episodes, full stories) 30 in a row for classic who. That I would consider good or better than good.
Nuwho, biggest streak was 5. 5 good stories in a row, before I hit a dud or worse a bad episode/story.
I am still collecting. Why stop now? I do own all of Jodies run. But Flux still sits in the plastic wrap. No desire to watch it, no desire to even open it. And I am the type of collector who watches special features. Still in no hurry over a year later, to watch Flux or even watch the special features for it.
I do seem to be (according to online) one of the only ones who likes Ncuti first episode. So we will see how it goes.
Edit: I still do enjoy both classic and Nuwho. But when I grab a Doctor who to watch from my collection. Easily 90% of the time, I am watching classic who.

Doctor Who is similar to James Bond in that it can reflect changing times and settings but the central character should remain a constant. With the Doctor's character changing radically after Peter Capaldi and coupled with the poor writing, Doctor Who has taken a nosedive. Instead of a British institution and family show with cool, low budget sci-fi stories it is now yet another vehicle for activism, cultural destruction and historical revisionism. As Steven Moffat said to the BBC: "We've kind of got to tell a lie. We'll go back into history and there will be black people where, historically, there wouldn't have been, and we won't dwell on that. We'll say, 'To hell with it, this is the imaginary, better version of the world. By believing in it, we'll summon it forth'."

Love doctor who since the age of four and I read the novelization of the 3 doctors (yes a strange place to start).
When I was 7 and lost most of my sight in an expulsive haemorrhage, one thing which comforted me was a display in the hospital with a full sized Tardis! It was something I could still touch and somewhat see and a reminder that there was a world out there!
Watched most of the classic series, heard a lot of the big finish audios, and enjoyed the revival in 2005, with most of the 9th-11th Doctor's era.
At bad points in my life, Doctor who was always there, an escape into adventure, an examplee of what a man should be, and occasionally something I learned from.
However, over time, Doctor who has changed into something I don't recognize, too many messages, simplistic writing, constant belittling and break down the doctor himself (at least when the Doctor is a him), and waaaay too much smug lecturing.
Even though I've recognized the show in episodes that aired 20 years before I was born, to episodes I'd watch new each week, something just started to die over the last few years, from the end of Capaldy's era, through Witicker and now onto the 15th Doctor.
With seeing the 10th doctor castigated by Donna for the crime of being a man, , and all the ridiculous stuff with the 15th Doctor's antics, not to mention the out and out misandry and hatred towards the fans by the show's writers and actors,
    I'm finally out!
I've been a card carrying whovian for most of my life, not anymore!
Right now the Daleks have the best idea of what to do with what Doctor who has become, Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!

@@TardisTalks "change", isn't necessarily a good thing, and doctor who in particular has been very good at disregarding changes when it took a misstep.
The Third doctor's exile to earth was feeling stale? So that was revoked.
the down right abusive version of the 6th doctor from Twin Dilemma was softened; especially in Trial of a timelord and the audios to make him a much more likable character.
The comedic season 25 got a dose of seriousness in season 26.
The 8th doctor of the 96 tv movie who was half human, with the eye of harmony stuck in his Tardis got an almost total rewrite for the audio adventures!
Even in the new series, Russel T Davies decided to remove the religious zealot angle from the Daleks (something which I'm fairly sure he only added because of his own atheism).
And season 2 of Torchwood made the crew a lot more likable.
But With the First doctor seen in twice upon a time being a cartoonishly sexist parody of the real first Doctor (far more cartoonishly sexist than the actual character written in the sixties), and the forced insertion of anti trump allegories (I'm no fan of trump, but I don't need him parodied in Doctor who, it was clear that this change wasn't just a matter of story decision, but an actual change in intentions.
Doctor who was no longer a universe for telling stories, but just a vehicle for social messaging.
The past didn't matter because the past could be altered!
Story, wonder and characters are clearly no longer the top priority!

Hopefully the new series will be well written again (the Chibnall years were pretty sad as far as scripts...Jodie was not to blame AT ALL for that...she gave 100 percent to her performance, but she sadly was just wrong for the part), but I won't be a double dumba** and declare the show "dead" or "too woke" before actually viewing the episodes. Well it lacks everything. And season 13 actually killed me by the way when it was releasing, the only thing I didn't watch of NewWho, well except spinoffs but that is in progress, 60th wasn't as bad as most people think of them, that was old doctor who, sorta, we had a bunch of mystery boxes for the future, and then.... Christmas special, everything was put back into dust, story is downright boring, no real threat, the villain is defeated using some weird out of place thing, WHY ARE THEY SINGING, WHY DO YOU RUB IT IN THE FACE THAT DOCTOR IS GAY NOW, WHY... this list goes on. For season 14, I will watch it probably, die to mystery boxes, plus it can't be as bad as season 11-13, you have to really try, but I am semi excited for 73 yards, and the final which has fourth wall breaks. But also, as RTD confirmed, in his mind it is no longer sci-fi, it is magical world. Just how can you defend it with "show needs to change"? For who? Oh no. The show that's been 'woke' since it's inception is now woke? Perish the thought. Oh dear me, what shall I, the viewer of this show, shall ever do?
