Dr Who!!! 1974 just as Tom Baker took over from Pertwee... I was sitting cushion in hand ... Before Star Wars, before the Black Hole.... This was and always will be my first love. just wait till you get to David Tennant
Time And Relative Dimensions In Space. TARDIS
Sonic screwdriver and psychic paper.... The only two 'Weapons' he needs
Just remember these words.... Are you my mummy?
Russel t Davies was a fan of classic who (as most of the crew were) and so there are many nods to his childhood episodes of the show.... the mannequins (autons) first appeared in the early 70s 3rd doctor story spearhead from space....
DEAR GOD - SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT DOCTOR WHO WATCHING IT?! This is a huge treat!
Yeah, until 50 people post loads of spoilers.
Actually there are quite a few of those on UA-cam. Always a treat.

Doctor Who fans, losing their minds: "SHE SAID THE THING"
Matt Smith: I like the bit where someone says it's bigger on the inside...

😁 It's funny, when I was a kid and watched DW for the first time, I didn't question it. It didn't make sense in our world, but it was obvious the doctor wasn't from our world, so it was just the way it was.
Apart from the one who said "It's smaller on the outside!".😊

"Does Doctor Who take place on Earth or Space?"
Yes.
"Where and when does Doctor Who take place?"
"Exactly."
"and who is the Doctor?" Also yes
@@klemminguk”How many different Doctors have there been?
“Absolutely”
Is it a contemporary drama, a historical piece, a science fiction show or a daft comedy?
It sure is.
Earth is in Space...
"This is absurd and incredibly cheesy, but delightful at the same time." Yep, you got it.
I saw Who described once as "always goofy, sometimes brilliant"
Doctor Who, also known as, "Running down corridors: The series."
Indeed.
@@Ozgarthefighter So true. I wonder if the powers that be would agree to licence a fitness app along the lines of "Zombies, Run!" but with DW-esque storylines. (I liked the conceit of the zombie one but it got a bit too stressfull for me!)

WHO: Lots of planets have a North!
Love that so much. But I first watched it dubbed in German. They all talk the same way and than that line comes 😂. They has such an issue how tf to deal with it. DW was definitely part of why I stopped watching dubbed stuff
Angela: "It's bigger on the inside?"

Everyone who's a vereran of this show responds "we got there". I did when my sister watched a bit and said it.
I legit yelled this into my house! LOL
One of the most spontaneous catchphrases ever
I said the same thing and did a little dance 😂😂😂 I love watching new whovians.
"Heroes are important. Heroes tell us who we want to be but when they made this particular hero they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an X-Wing, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help and they didn’t give him a superpower or a heat-ray, they gave him an extra heart. And that’s extraordinary. There will never come a time when we don’t need a hero like the Doctor."
-Stephen Moffat, second Nu-Who showrunner.
god damn i love stories
"Did you like the new Who when it came out?"
Wonderful chaps. All of them.
Dr Who takes place everywhere and every when. Earth, different planets Space, Past, Present and Future.
Companion: It's bigger inside than out!
4th Doctor: That's because it's dimensionally trancendental.
Companion: What's that mean?
4th Doctor: It means it's bigger inside than out.
Time to put 'Robots of Death' on the rewatch list.
Eccleston is often remembered as the "angry" Doctor, but I say his comedy chops shine when he's literally fighting with a disembodied hand.
I thought of him more as broken than angry... and his acting through those broken moments is what hooked me on him and the show
I think Capaldi and his *eyebrows* have taken that title for the most part.
@@NearEastMugwump these are ATTACK EYEBROWS
Yeah he is angry but let's be real this man can go from pain and trauma from the War to pure comedic gold on a heartbeat. Tennant is the number one favorite but to me personally Eccleston is a very close second
He is the doctor with the catch phrase “Fantastic”
"This is absurd and incredibly cheesy but very delightful at the same time." I think she's got the essence of Doctor Who nailed down in just the first episode.
Eccleson sums up everything about what you need to know about New Who with his first line. "Run!"
Imagine thinking about starting with Whittaker. Ugh. That's where you're supposed to STOP watching it.
The JFK reference is also a nod into the history of the show, Doctor Who originally debuted on Nov 23 1963, the day after Kennedy's assassination. The show was delayed a few minutes due to a news report of the assassination.
I thought it was moved to the next day
It's become an urban myth about it moving to the next day. The first episode was always scheduled to go out on 23rd November.
@@iaind73 I didn't get into it until Tennant was leaving the first time so I basically dropped into LOTS of myths and lies. Thanks for clearing this one up😊
@@iaind73I could be wrong, but I believe what happened is that they re-aired it the following week before the second episode because the numbers were so low for the premier they were worried people would be lost.
@@andrewjuby6339 You're correct with that, the quick repeat of the first episode is probably where the whole moved to Saturday thing came from.

"This is absurd and incredibly cheesy, but incredibly delightful at the same time" Yep, that's Doctor who - and then it rips your heart out and leaves you a blubbering mess
You said “it’s bigger on the inside” and I did the DiCaprio point at the TV meme.
Doctor Who certainly has a tradition of turning everyday domestic items into something either absurd or terrifying (sometimes both at the same time)
Yep, and now we have to wait 3 seasons and 10 episodes for the terrifying part.
Or just having them show up as props on "alien spacecraft". Who can forget seeing industrial desk chairs like every school had on the "bridge" of a starship in the 1970's?
1:20 - "Sarah Jane? Sarah... Jo?"
Long time fans - "That's not a simple answer."
Is it a comedy? Is it a horror? Is it a drama? Is it action? Is it sci-fi? Is it (insert adjective here)? YES lol
"Why is it like a horror movie?"
One of the better descriptions of Doctor Who I've heard is that it's like in the middle of a horror movie a new character shows up and suddenly it's actually an action/adventure.
Doctor Who casts the widest net in the types/tones of story they tell of maybe any drama series ever, thats one thing thats both given it staying power, but also makes it hard to explain to anyone who hasnt seen it. You will cry, you will flinch, you will laugh, just not every week.
It's definitely cheesy and goofy, and yet has some awesome drama. The episode which introduces River Song is...spoilers!
I grew up with the original Who from the 60s to the 80s, and when this episode first aired I thought: "oh, it's not a re-imagining or a reboot, it's a straight continuation and they're doing it properly." My wife and I both love nu-Who, in part because the people making it _get_ the original that _they_ grew up with.
They say that one's favorite Doctor is the one they knew first. Mine is Baker, although I give honorable mentions to several others.
“Why are you smiling? Now we’re in trouble, big grin” Welcome to the Doctor, Angela
Yep, basically sums it up 😂
Fair warning,
Torchwood while technically good isn't usually light. When I described Children of the Earth to friends of mine, I told them "think of Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead without bubbly things like hope, or optimism."
Indeed, Torchwood is a more mature show.
Also, fun fact: Torchwood comes from an anagram of Doctor Who.
@@donkeysunited Yes. When they were bring Doctor Who back, they didn't want the word to get out so they called it Torchwood instead
Absolutely spot on
@@donkeysunited damn, I never noticed the anagram even thought I've been watching doctor who for almost a decade :o
On the subject of former Doctors, the oldest surviving actor who played the role is Tom Baker, who was the most famous Doctor and the one who first made the show successful in America. Tom is 90 years old now. I expect that his passing will get some mention in the media even in the US. Tom played the Doctor from 1974 to 1981. Another fun fact is that one of his female companions on the show was Lalla Ward, they were married in real life for 2 years, but she ended up marrying the famous evolutionary biologist, zoologist and author Richard Dawkins, but they too are now divorced.
If he has to tell someone his name, for investigative purposes, it's often Dr. John Smith. :)
"Is that her boyfriend? He also comes across as gay. Maybe he's her gay friend?"
As a gay man myself, damn Mickey catching strays and we're only 5 minutes in my god

I would love to see her watch Deep Space 9!
My favorite thing about the whole Dr. Who series is how empowered, capable, and "take no shit", the women are =D
Nothing wrong with women in power they are amazing, but really?! So Barbarella, Uhura, Guinan, Ripley, Sarah Connor, Tasha Yar, Dr. Crusher, Nerys, Jadzia dax, B`lenna Torres, Cpt Janeway, 7 of 9, Colonel Carter, Dr. Weir, Aeryn Sun, Princess Leia.... just from the top of my head!! Strong women are the back bone of sci-fi, so can we stop erasing the past to make ourselves look better and gain brownie points?!?! Comments like this is the reason I stopped watching everything. New entertainment/entertainers keep using this argument and it`s killing the industry. sorry if I come across as a jack ... and I don`t mean to come off in a tangent like this. Again sorry, but I had to get this off my chest!!
@RandomNPC001 You didn't need to get that off your chest because it's a pointless rant. Nothing in the original post justified anything in your comment. You seem to be reacting to something that you imagined but that is not in the wording of the original comment.
@@paulonius42 Feel free to disagree! I stand by what I've said. You not liking my message does not make anything I've posted any less true.
@@RandomNPC001 It's not a matter of disagreeing. The original post did not diminish any of those other strong women or any other franchise. It simply praised Doctor Who for its tradition of strong women. That clearly includes the past, so nobody is erasing the past. That's why I said your comment is pointless. You responded to something nobody said. The original post praised this show strong women without saying anything against all of those other strong women characters.
It's not about disagreeing, it's just that you responded to something that wasn't said. Where did the original post erase the past? Go ahead, please show me so that I can apologize for being wrong about you.
@@RandomNPC001you're reaching. Reread the original comment.
You're right about the limited special/visual effects of Classic Who adding to the charm of the series. I'm Gen-X (55) and it delights me that the show's revival sparked interest in the classic series, and I have seen a lot of younger reactors watch the classic episodes, completely gripped by the stories and characters, which are the true hearts of both Classic and NuWho. I also think it's funny that the oldest NuWho episodes (like this one from 2005), aired almost 20 years ago, so even the revived series now has the same low-budget charm to modern eyes that the original series had for viewers in 2005.
Since you haven't watched the old Dr. Who stuff, I'll mention that's where they told us his TARDIS is always a British phone booth because normally every TARDIS has a camouflage device that makes it appear as something in the environment where it lands. However, his broke while he was in Britain, and he never fixed it.
First and foremost, EVERYONE, be careful of spoilers! With the new-Who Verse starting with the 9th Doctor, they did a really good job of explaining the basics of the original Dr. Who for those that have not seen the earlier Doctors. For me, my first experience was Doctor #4, Tom Baker. Be careful, Angela, you'll find yourself getting deep into the series and will start to want to binge watch. BTW: Love it when you wear your Pink Floyd shirt.
You said spoilers 😁

Seeing Sesskasays and Blind Wave and now you react to Doctor Who is amazing.
This Doctor is the Ninth Doctor. It’s amazing how this show has gone on to this day for over sixty years.
I look forward to you seeing the Doctors, the companions and the villains. This is going to be fun.
Sesskasays watches so much stuff I can’t watch with her so it’ll be nice to sit down and watch a full playlist after this season
@@funnylilgalreacts that’ll be nice. Sesskasays has reacted to New Who up to the latest and she’s reacting to Classic Who. It’s taken her literally years. Even without Classic Who it’ll take you years to react to all of New Who.
There are Classic Whos I’ll recommend when the time is right.
She’s just finished the Tom Baker era, if I’m not mistaken… don’t know if she’s released her first Peter Davison reaction yet.
@@borjankosarac3645 you’re correct. She’s on a break at the moment. It’ll feel sad when she eventually finishes Classic Who after so long.
Jules Reacts and emme reacts are also doing Doctor Who. Lovely to see Angela start as well!
This was a sucessful revival because it respected the Classic series but also modernised and didn't rely on it for someone new to start watching.
The Autons were a Classic Doctor Who Villain from the 70's, I wont say anythign more than that incase you ever do watch Classic Who but it doesn't matter if you know that or not. Obviously the effects in the 60's - 80's were not good, not even for the time but I don't think anyone really cared because the stories are good. Even modern Doctor Who doesn't have the best effects (although it does get better) but I can say that I have never met someone who only likes Classic Doctor Who and hates Modern Doctor Who.
You've picked a perfect entry point into the Doctor's universe. As an old fan, "9" is still my favorite
Police boxes were around after the phone was invented so that police officers could communicate with their station. They didn't look like the Dr who one but they were big enough to have a tiny desk in them. Eventually it just became a box on a pole the housed a phone that everyone could use in an emergency
I believe they were also used as temporary holding cells.
They didn't have radios. This was their police network
The remaining ones in Glasgow are now used as mini coffee shop or vape stands.
In the UK there were such boxes pretty much identical to the Tardis - especially in its original 1963 incarnation. Since then it has had some minor cosmetic upgrades but would still be instantly recognisable as such if it landed in England any time between 1930 and 1970 - the basic design was from 1929.
The person who was being detained would be inside the police box while the police officer could call his station on the phone located outside the police box.
The Nestine/Autons which feature in this episode actually first appeared in the premier of Season 7 in 1970 which was not only their first, but also the first story of the 3rd Doctor John Pertwee and the first episode of Doctor Who in colour. (Though a large portion of the audience wouldn't have noticed that difference since many hadn't yet upgraded to colour televisions)
Do we know if that was the first episode Davies saw of Doctor Who? That would explain why he brought them back at the reboot of the series for the first adversary of this Doctor.
@@charlesedwards2856 It is not. He's actually explained his very first memory of Doctor Who is Hartnell turning into Troughton when he was 3. However he would probably have much clearer memories of the Pertwee years as he'd have been 6-11.
I discovered Doctor Who in 1985 when I was out of work for five months. It was on a couple of PBS stations local to the NY/NJ area, one of which was on UHF (remember the bowtie antenna that clipped onto the normal VHF pole antenna?) Something to consider is Doctor Whos origin as a TV show, it was meant as an educational family show which would spend its time in the past to explore history and the future for science. It obviously grew from this but always maintained it pre watershed time slot and has remained family friendly. Hence its slight goofyness but its meant to be fun and exciting! Let yourself get wrapped up in the adventure of it all and remember, run!

I’m an American who started watching Doctor Who on PBS in Chicago in 1980. The 2005 revival was a dream come true. However, there is a wonderful company called Big Finish who had already brought us great audio dramas with the original Doctor Who actors and they continue to this day. Oo! Glad you are finally getting around to Dr Who. The 'Nu-Who' series aren't a reboot as such, they continue on from the 40-odd years of the classic programme. But, they treat you as a complete newcomer to the series, so the Who lore will be slowly re-revealed over the course of the series. No spoilers, but there are some amazing story arcs and payoffs over the course of multiple series. Dr Who can be exciting, scary, silly and often emotional, but it is one hell of a ride...
If I'm remembering correctly, Police Boxes were basically telephone booths with a direct line to the local police station. A TARDIS is supposed to have a chameleon circuit, something that automatically disguises it as something innocuous, but this one got stuck as a police box in the 60s. The Doctor has since fixed it, but likes it like this.
"Ta-ra" means "goodbye" and supposedly is a variation of "ta-ta", which means the same thing. There are all sorts of theories where the term(s) originated, none of which can be proven, such as a word derived from old Norse and so on.
I watch 3 minutes of intro and realize, you fit PERFECTLY into our fandom!! 🤗🫶
So 13:20 - in the 70s, police boxes did indeed used to have police officers inside them for your local area. If you needed something you’d knock on the door and ask them to come sort it out on their bicycle

My early guess is Eleven ❤
One of my favorite reaction channels has discovered my all-time favorite sci-fi franchise. There is light in these dark times, after all.
Indeed. Sharing the things that bring us joy, connecting through them, certainly feels more important than ever.
(As I often have to remind myself whenever I worry about spending too much time on "escapism". If not for stories and fun and art and laughing and crying together, what would be the point? Plus, as Gaiman among others has pointed out, "escape" is not a bad word; many people _need_ escape into art at various times, for various reasons.)
Fun Fact: in a later season of Dr Who, Ben Browder (who plays John Crichton) is in an episode as sherif in the old west.
he was told while filming for Dr Who, that the Lead Writer handed out box sets of Farscape as 'inspiration material' for how the newer Dr Who should feel.
When police boxes were a thing - there was a hatch on the outside that held a phone connected to the nearest police station, free for use of the public in emergencies. Police officers had a key to the box and could use it for sheltering from the rain, doing paperwork, having a cup of tea, or even sticking in a captive and locking them in till they could get help. The light on the top could be set to flash to show that help was required.

A Police Box is a tiny office, telephone call unit, equipment locker and potentially a temporary cell. They mostly existed from the early 1900's to around 1960, After that, Police became more mobile, and Police stations became where Police business was done.
I am very happy that Christopher is now reading stories for his Dr. I full on loved him as this character. My late husband also liked him in this.

In-regards to the blanket, there's two different "categories" of Doctor Who, Classic Doctor Who, and Modern Doctor Who. Classic Doctor Who went from 1963 until sometime Pre-2005, most if not all the doctors should be on your blanket. Modern era starts with Christopher Eccleston and he's not THAT good of a doctor in my opinion, but he's still great. There has been (approximately) 14/15 doctors. The Classic eras are 1-8 doctors, and the modern eras are 9+ so, you won't be seeing the earlier doctors in the modern ones explicitly, they are mentioned and images of them are shown, but they themselves very rarely make an appearance. Plus (spoilers) there's one doctor who shows up in the modern eras who was able to be doctor twice, that no other doctor got, I can't wait for you to figure out who.
== WARNING: While the list below IS a list of doctors and may be spoilers, my internal river (You'll meet them in the future) wants me to warn of.. Spoilers! ==

Christopher made such an impact for such a short stint.
The police boxes are long gone but back in the day they were basically mini police stations. A copper could rest, fill out paperwork or even detain someone. They held a phone which could be accessed by the public. In there heyday not only did no one have a mobile even land lines were uncommon.

I grew up in the UK in the 1970's, so John Pertwee and Tom Baker were my Dr. Who's (Tom Baker was my favourite). The show went downhill as far as was concerned in the 90's, but when the show was rebooted with Christopher Eccelstone, I loved the first few seasons. You picked a great place to get into the show, I think you'll become a Whovian ;-)
19:04 She said the thing! 🥳 It is indeed, as so many have remarked, bigger on the inside, Angela. :)
Aw man this makes me so nostalgic! Eccleston is my favourite doctor by far and I love Rose and this season SO much
I started watching DW three years ago, just because I wanted to see David Tennant. I ended up in love with Chris Eccleston's Ninth Doctor SO MUCH that it really hurt to see him go and I couldn't watch a DT episode for a month! Since then, I've loved all the Doctors, and the intense emotional journey of going through all the seasons was an experience I've never had with other series. You're in for a ride,
When I first found your channel, there was a list of shows I hoped you'd never seen, just so that there was a chance you'd do reacts to them. At the very tippy top of the list was Doctor Who. So words cannot describe how excited I am to see how you respond to the campness, cheesiness, horror, comedy, and all around trauma that this show is.
I'm so glad you're starting this ,you have a big great journey ahead 👍
I grew up with the 4th Doctor on PBS.
Always loved it, so much i hunted down and watched every episode that still exists and listened to the audio of those that don't.
So to answer your question, it was a change, but a good one.
I wish Ecelston had done more because he sertainly made a fun doctor.
A police box was just a box, usually a bit bigger than a phone booth, usually painted blue or sometimes green. It locked from the outside and had a small compartment accessible from the outside with a phone in it that connected to the local police station. If a police constable arrested someone while on patrol (on foot) they could lock the arrested person up in the box, phone the station to send someone to come pick them up, then continue on their patrol.
Hell yes!! So excited for.this journey so much here that you'll appreciate. The 9th doctor is my favorite, he's FANTASTIC
We got another one~
Man I love when people found this show. It's so intriguing, hehe
All the best with the show, and hope you have a blast fills with rollercoaster of emotions! :D
As a Brit I hope you enjoy this show. It's the longest running tv show ever and in my opinion one of the best.
It originally ran from 1963 - 1987 but this is the reboot from 2005 - present but the story carries over both and ties well together.
Autons (the manequins) were first used in the 3rd doctors 1st episode in 1970 and are in my opinion one of the freakiest villians the show produced.
You.. are in for a wild and emotional ride. I started this a few years back at this exact spot and lord it turned into one of my favorite shows ever
What a journey you're about to take!
Oh, you are in for a treat :) and we all get to reap the benefits!!
Ive only watched up to the 12th doctor but one thing i love especially watching this episode is no matter the face it always feels like the doctor. I can picture the 10th 11th and 12th doctor all saying these things, looking the way he does, the funny little quips the little movements and mannerisms
I hope 13 and 14 feel like the doctor when i get to them
Doctor Who is definitely one of the deepest rabbit holes you will ever dive down. The further you go, the deeper it gets and you'll absolutely want to keep going. You've got 60 years of catching up to do and NuWho is a great place to start. Keep watching - you never regret the dive. Cheers....
Grew up on:
Third - Jon Pertwee
Fourth - Tom Baker
But,
Eleventh - Matt Smith is my favorite.
The first three Doctors were the most serious. Tom Baker started the trend of absurd Doctors.
The first absurd Doctor and a great narrator for a metal album.
Baker was also my actual first but I found Classic Who to be too cheap and cheesy to really get into it as I was a Star Wars kid. Chris Eccelstone is who I really consider my 1st but Peter Capaldi's 12th is MY Doctor.
The 2nd Doctor wasn't very serious
Me too! Pertwee was my first doctor.
Oh. This is FANTASTIC
You're gonna have so much fun with this! I'm insanely jealous that you're seeing this for the first time.
OMG I'm SO here for this!!!! (It gets BETTER and BETTER the longer you watch it. So many EPIC moments! )
"oh no big deal, there's plenty of those in Bervely Hills" - I choked laughing so hard
I'm SO GLAD you're watching this! It's a long journey, but you're going to love it all.
Season 1 is a bit campy, but fun.
Had to smile when you said Doctor John Hamilton because he has used the name Doctor John Smith in past. As a Whovian (a fan of Doctor Who) welcome to our world.
BBC: [announces that 19 years of New Who era are finished and resets season count for second time]
People who wait till whole show comes out to start watching it:
I'm glad you're enjoying it. And yes, Ncuti (pronounces as "shuty") is absolutely fantastic when he smiles and laughs.
As a lifelong Doctor Who fan, you are in for the epiphany of an emotional rollercoaster. You´ll laugh, you´ll cry, you´ll cheer, you´ll scream... it has everything. The series evolves over time, with better things coming up. It does have some cringy moments, some cheesy moments, but there are some really incredible pieces on this. The speeches from the Doctor in the latter series are truly moving and incredible; and a reflection of us as a society and civilisation. You are going to love this!!! Just be ready for the latter half of this season... when *SPOLIER AERT* they meet a captain... I´ll say no more.
The original Doctor Who tv show began back in 1963 and ended in 1989.
It featured 7 different actors / versions of Doctor Who.
In 1996 the BBC in a co-production with Universal Pictures, made a tv movie featuring the 8th Doctor Who.
It did not lead to a revival of the tv show.
New Who began in 2005, with the introduction of the ninth Doctor Who.
Anything else would be SPOILERS. :)
And technically, even the word "Spoilers" is a spoiler. 🙂
@@idrisidmonster7115 Well, not if you don't know it is. So really, saying that "spoilers" is a spoiler is the spoiler.
...And yes, this argument could go on for months! =:o}
Man, I cannot express how excited i am to see someone who knows NOTHING about dr who get into watching it because that is such a rare thing to find. I hope that no one ever explains anything to you because it will be so much sweeter to see you learn it in your reactions.
You were already my favorite reactor and I am ecstatic to be able to watch this journey. BTW its TARDIS
