"Why is it like a horror movie?" One of the better descriptions of Doctor Who I've heard is that it's like in the middle of a horror movie a new character shows up and suddenly it's actually an action/adventure.
Christopher Eccleston is a great character actor. He and Jodie Whittaker were in a stage adaptation of Antigone. Met him and Billie at the same convention in different years. Nice people.
The Nestine/Autons which feature in this episode actually first appeared in the premier of Season 7 in 1970 which was not only their first, but also the first story of the 3rd Doctor John Pertwee and the first episode of Doctor Who in colour. (Though a large portion of the audience wouldn't have noticed that difference since many hadn't yet upgraded to colour televisions)
Do we know if that was the first episode Davies saw of Doctor Who? That would explain why he brought them back at the reboot of the series for the first adversary of this Doctor.
@@charlesedwards2856 It is not. He's actually explained his very first memory of Doctor Who is Hartnell turning into Troughton when he was 3. However he would probably have much clearer memories of the Pertwee years as he'd have been 6-11.
I discovered Doctor Who in 1985 when I was out of work for five months. It was on a couple of PBS stations local to the NY/NJ area, one of which was on UHF (remember the bowtie antenna that clipped onto the normal VHF pole antenna?) I watched all of Doctors four and five, and most of six. I was delighted when they revived the series with Ecclestone and have watched it ever since.
Police boxes were around after the phone was invented so that police officers could communicate with their station. They didn't look like the Dr who one but they were big enough to have a tiny desk in them. Eventually it just became a box on a pole the housed a phone that everyone could use in an emergency
In the UK there were such boxes pretty much identical to the Tardis - especially in its original 1963 incarnation. Since then it has had some minor cosmetic upgrades but would still be instantly recognisable as such if it landed in England any time between 1930 and 1970 - the basic design was from 1929.
The person who was being detained would be inside the police box while the police officer could call his station on the phone located outside the police box.
Seeing Sesskasays and Blind Wave and now you react to Doctor Who is amazing. This Doctor is the Ninth Doctor. It’s amazing how this show has gone on to this day for over sixty years. I look forward to you seeing the Doctors, the companions and the villains. This is going to be fun.
@@funnylilgalreacts that’ll be nice. Sesskasays has reacted to New Who up to the latest and she’s reacting to Classic Who. It’s taken her literally years. Even without Classic Who it’ll take you years to react to all of New Who. There are Classic Whos I’ll recommend when the time is right.
As someone who has watched this show many many times since I was a child, I am very exited to follow along with this series seeing someone who has never seen it before. I've never seen you before, this was on my homepage, but you've certainly gained a new subscriber :D
Something to consider is Doctor Whos origin as a TV show, it was meant as an educational family show which would spend its time in the past to explore history and the future for science. It obviously grew from this but always maintained it pre watershed time slot and has remained family friendly. Hence its slight goofyness but its meant to be fun and exciting! Let yourself get wrapped up in the adventure of it all and remember, run!
Fair warning, Torchwood while technically good isn't usually light. When I described Children of the Earth to friends of mine, I told them "think of Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead without bubbly things like hope, or optimism."
@@donkeysunited It has one mature season. One. Out of four. One tries to be mature and could be argued to be but Miracle Day sadly cannot hold a candle to Children of Earth. The first two seasons are more YA and with that adolscent and wanna be mature/grown-up than actually grown up. That's not to say that it's totally bad, series two is pretty good and I'd argue easily the second best of the four. But series 1 suffers from a total lack of self-identity and bad character development. Quite frankly, it is telling in regards to his later run as Doctor Who showrunner that the one season in which Chris Chibnall could exert the most creative control as the headwriter and de facto showrunner was also the worst season of the entire show by a mile and a half.
"Is that her boyfriend? He also comes across as gay. Maybe he's her gay friend?" As a gay man myself, damn Mickey catching strays and we're only 5 minutes in my god
You're right about the limited special/visual effects of Classic Who adding to the charm of the series. I'm Gen-X (55) and it delights me that the show's revival sparked interest in the classic series, and I have seen a lot of younger reactors watch the classic episodes, completely gripped by the stories and characters, which are the true hearts of both Classic and NuWho. I also think it's funny that the oldest NuWho episodes (like this one from 2005), aired almost 20 years ago, so even the revived series now has the same low-budget charm to modern eyes that the original series had for viewers in 2005.
Low budget monsters were a Who tradition and badge of honor. lol This universe is wonderful for those of us prone to hyperfixating on fictional universes. Terrific characters, tons of lore, and a canon with a built in excuse for being a bit wibbly wobbly now and again. Looking forward to seeing you enjoy the ride.
I'm honestly so glad go see you reacting to Christopher Eccleston's Doctor. I grew up watching the older ones with my dad (Tom Baker was always his favourite) but Eccleston's version was the one that truly captured both my imagination and heart in a way that none of the others have ever quite managed. I can't wait to see you go on this journey.

First and foremost, EVERYONE, be careful of spoilers! With the new-Who Verse starting with the 9th Doctor, they did a really good job of explaining the basics of the original Dr. Who for those that have not seen the earlier Doctors. For me, my first experience was Doctor #4, Tom Baker. Be careful, Angela, you'll find yourself getting deep into the series and will start to want to binge watch. BTW: Love it when you wear your Pink Floyd shirt.
I’m an American who started watching Doctor Who on PBS in Chicago in 1980. The 2005 revival was a dream come true. However, there is a wonderful company called Big Finish who had already brought us great audio dramas with the original Doctor Who actors and they continue to this day. Online you may see negativity, but I think there are a lot of Doctor Who fans like myself who like old and new who and watch it all. I’m currently on a watch through of the 1st Doctor era with my 82 year old Mom.
@@paulwatson9486 first started watching in individual episodes on weekdays. Before they switched to “omnibus” compilations on Sundays. Started taping them a couple years later.
Yay!!!! You’ve pick a great place to start. Just know it gets better and better as you go. Thanks for what you do and selecting this show. May your views and likes always be equal.
If I'm remembering correctly, Police Boxes were basically telephone booths with a direct line to the local police station. A TARDIS is supposed to have a chameleon circuit, something that automatically disguises it as something innocuous, but this one got stuck as a police box in the 60s. The Doctor has since fixed it, but likes it like this.
I am so VERY happy to see you begin you're Doctor Who education. I think I'm going to enjoy watching you discover the show as much as I was on my first watch. Thank you!
Damn. Welcome to the fandom! I'm curious to see who will end up being "your" Doctor. It's so weird. You have the most laughs with one, you love the journey of the other... but there is this single one you feel is your kindred spirit. Ah, what a journey you have ahead of you.
That is the most apt description of the emotional state when watching DW. But yeah, one of them will definitely be your spirit animal, your soul-mate, your “protect him at all costs” or whartever you call it :D
Indeed. Sharing the things that bring us joy, connecting through them, certainly feels more important than ever. (As I often have to remind myself whenever I worry about spending too much time on "escapism". If not for stories and fun and art and laughing and crying together, what would be the point? Plus, as Gaiman among others has pointed out, "escape" is not a bad word; many people _need_ escape into art at various times, for various reasons.)
Gods the nostaliga! The 9th was always MY doctor, I started watching from this episode just after his season wrapped and once I reached the end there was David Tennant. Who is a genius and a darling but I always resented him because 9 was MINE.
When I first found your channel, there was a list of shows I hoped you'd never seen, just so that there was a chance you'd do reacts to them. At the very tippy top of the list was Doctor Who. So words cannot describe how excited I am to see how you respond to the campness, cheesiness, horror, comedy, and all around trauma that this show is.
Oo! Glad you are finally getting around to Dr Who. The 'Nu-Who' series aren't a reboot as such, they continue on from the 40-odd years of the classic programme. But, they treat you as a complete newcomer to the series, so the Who lore will be slowly re-revealed over the course of the series. No spoilers, but there are some amazing story arcs and payoffs over the course of multiple series. Dr Who can be exciting, scary, silly and often emotional, but it is one hell of a ride...
Since you haven't watched the old Dr. Who stuff, I'll mention that's where they told us his TARDIS is always a British phone booth because normally every TARDIS has a camouflage device that makes it appear as something in the environment where it lands. However, his broke while he was in Britain, and he never fixed it.
OH MY GOODNESS! I’m so excited for this journey. I love your reactions and Doctor Who is one of my favorites of all time. Can’t wait for you to experience this!
This was a sucessful revival because it respected the Classic series but also modernised and didn't rely on it for someone new to start watching. The Autons were a Classic Doctor Who Villain from the 70's, I wont say anythign more than that incase you ever do watch Classic Who but it doesn't matter if you know that or not. Obviously the effects in the 60's - 80's were not good, not even for the time but I don't think anyone really cared because the stories are good. Even modern Doctor Who doesn't have the best effects (although it does get better) but I can say that I have never met someone who only likes Classic Doctor Who and hates Modern Doctor Who.
You know the sound the TARDIS makes? That wheezing, groaning? That sound brings HOPE wherever it goes. To anyone who hears it, Doctor. Anyone. However lost. Even you.
I grew up with the 4th Doctor on PBS. Always loved it, so much i hunted down and watched every episode that still exists and listened to the audio of those that don't. So to answer your question, it was a change, but a good one. I wish Ecelston had done more because he sertainly made a fun doctor.

I believe they were also used as temporary holding cells.
They didn't have radios. This was their police network
The remaining ones in Glasgow are now used as mini coffee shop or vape stands.
Dr Who takes place everywhere and every when. Earth, different planets Space, Past, Present and Future.
Sesskasays watches so much stuff I can’t watch with her so it’ll be nice to sit down and watch a full playlist after this season
She’s just finished the Tom Baker era, if I’m not mistaken… don’t know if she’s released her first Peter Davison reaction yet.
@@borjankosarac3645 you’re correct. She’s on a break at the moment. It’ll feel sad when she eventually finishes Classic Who after so long.
Jules Reacts and emme reacts are also doing Doctor Who. Lovely to see Angela start as well!
Let yourself get wrapped up in the adventure of it all and remember, run!
yup main viewership became the Stoners!!!!! lol nah jk
but kinda
Was for those who enjoyed herbal timewasting when I was a student far too many decades ago!
If he has to tell someone his name, for investigative purposes, it's often Dr. John Smith. :)
Fair warning,
Torchwood while technically good isn't usually light. When I described Children of the Earth to friends of mine, I told them "think of Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead without bubbly things like hope, or optimism."
Indeed, Torchwood is a more mature show.
Also, fun fact: Torchwood comes from an anagram of Doctor Who.
@@donkeysunited Yes. When they were bring Doctor Who back, they didn't want the word to get out so they called it Torchwood instead
@@donkeysunited damn, I never noticed the anagram even thought I've been watching doctor who for almost a decade :o
Police boxes were made to hold people to wait for back-up/paddy wagon. The phone is on the outside for the officers to call for assistance.
"Is that her boyfriend? He also comes across as gay. Maybe he's her gay friend?"
As a gay man myself, damn Mickey catching strays and we're only 5 minutes in my god
lololol
😂😂😂
I started laughing so hard when I heard that hahaha, I already want her to meet certain captain
well the actor playing micky did do a series called 'Metrosexual'
I mean, Mickey's entire purpose in season 1 seems to be to catch strays... So good job on him?
OMG, can't wait for Blink!
The oldest episodes were literally sets on a theater stage, just like watching a play, which they filmed. :)
"Ta-ra" means "goodbye" and supposedly is a variation of "ta-ta", which means the same thing. There are all sorts of theories where the term(s) originated, none of which can be proven, such as a word derived from old Norse and so on.
I always get shivers at the “that’s who I am” monologue.
My favorite thing about the whole Dr. Who series is how empowered, capable, and "take no shit", the women are =D
Nothing wrong with women in power they are amazing, but really?! So Barbarella, Uhura, Guinan, Ripley, Sarah Connor, Tasha Yar, Dr. Crusher, Nerys, Jadzia dax, B`lenna Torres, Cpt Janeway, 7 of 9, Colonel Carter, Dr. Weir, Aeryn Sun, Princess Leia.... just from the top of my head!! Strong women are the back bone of sci-fi, so can we stop erasing the past to make ourselves look better and gain brownie points?!?! Comments like this is the reason I stopped watching everything. New entertainment/entertainers keep using this argument and it`s killing the industry. sorry if I come across as a jack ... and I don`t mean to come off in a tangent like this. Again sorry, but I had to get this off my chest!!
@@paulonius42 Feel free to disagree! I stand by what I've said. You not liking my message does not make anything I've posted any less true.
@@RandomNPC001you're reaching. Reread the original comment.
@@RandomNPC001Original comment: "I love how empowered the women on Doctor Who are." You: "WHAT? But other shows and movies have strong women, too! Don't erase them!"
You do realize that's like someone saying, "I love dogs," and you responding, "STOP ERASING CATS!" don't you?
@@KBRoller Not to mention that classic who also had strong women but this person acted like it somehow offends other shows that came after it. (They really living up to their username, honestly.)
I remember the first time watching this, I realized that I had found something truly special, and that I would only have one “first time” with each episode going forward. I watched every episode as if it were a precious treasure, savoring that experience. I have rewatched my favorite eras several times over now, and even went back and watched original Who, but I will forever prize that moment when I first met the Doctor.❤
You are seriously checking all my boxes: Firefly, Battlestar, Farscape, now Doctor Who. If you end up doing Star Trek or Stargate I'd die out of sheer joy!
I also look forward to Babylon 5. But yeah, I too have been enjoying the BSG and Farscape run and now The Doctor!!!
As for the "gray sea shaggy" guy. You'll meet him in due time, don't worry.
Seconded on Stargate.
I'd love a Stargate REACTION
man Stargate would be awesome and taking years ^^
I would love to see her watch Deep Space 9!
Subscribing for THIS, lovely to find someone new to Who, can’t wait for more to come, have an excellent time, the show is an all time favourite and this is the perfect place to start, the birth of “New WHO” so to speak! Loved the reaction!! Have fun with the show, hello from the UK!! :)

Welcome to the Who fandom, Angela.
And... please be patient with the earlier episodes. 😅
It really is worth it. 😁
And remember to moisturize...

Always craving new Doctor Who reactions and I am more than HAPPY that you started this. Am here for the whole ride!
Im loving that people are now getting in to this!! (Granted, you're the 2nd person I've seen react to it lately but still loving it)
First and foremost, EVERYONE, be careful of spoilers!
You said spoilers 😁

"Spoilers" need the quotation marks lpl but yeah this comment section is worst than the Anime tractions on yt
WTTW. Channel 11. In Chicago.
@@paulwatson9486 first started watching in individual episodes on weekdays. Before they switched to “omnibus” compilations on Sundays. Started taping them a couple years later.
Big finish used to be amazing. That 1 to 150 range is phenomenal. Now its just canon fixing. Still some good stuff here and there tho.
@@jplegend98 Eighth Doctor Adventures, Jago & Lightfoot anything with Colin Baker still worth it. The War Doctor was amazing.

Yay!!!! You’ve pick a great place to start. Just know it gets better and better as you go. Thanks for what you do and selecting this show. May your views and likes always be equal.
I haven't check your channel for a week and now you're watching Doctor Who?! Ooh boy i'm going for this ride ❤
I used to work in that department store (James Howells) in Cardiff. Most of the episodes were filmed in South Wales.
I'm so glad to be here for the start of your journey. This is gonna be fantastic!
I'm so glad you're starting this ,you have a big great journey ahead 👍
Hell yes!! So excited for.this journey so much here that you'll appreciate. The 9th doctor is my favorite, he's FANTASTIC

Every time someone asks me who my favorite Doctor is, I have to make a TED Talk about it.
Lol
That is the most apt description of the emotional state when watching DW. But yeah, one of them will definitely be your spirit animal, your soul-mate, your “protect him at all costs” or whartever you call it :D
100% My Doctor is Tom Baker.
My early guess is Eleven ❤
You.. are in for a wild and emotional ride. I started this a few years back at this exact spot and lord it turned into one of my favorite shows ever

One of my favorite reaction channels has discovered my all-time favorite sci-fi franchise. There is light in these dark times, after all.
Loved your fresh reaction to the series. Long time fan of Doctor Who going back to its original broadcast… Thank god for the Who archives! Enjoy!
I cannot express how excited I am that you're doing this. I'm so here for it.
You know the sound the TARDIS makes? That wheezing, groaning? That sound brings HOPE wherever it goes. To anyone who hears it, Doctor. Anyone. However lost. Even you.
"I'm . . . er . . . looking for the Doctor?"
It makes that sound because he leaves the hand break on.
