  • We leave Castleford as we explore Britain by Narrowboat on the Calder & Hebble Navigation, calling at Stanley Ferry to remember the narrowboat pump-out disaster of 2004.
From there we follow the Calder and Hebble Navigation through Wakefield, Horbury Bridge and Dewsbury, calling at Shepley Bridge on our way towards Huddersfield. On the two hottest days of 2019, Colin learns how to use a Calder Spike in the locks and opens up about being socially awkward.
Catch-up on every vlog, from the beginning, in order, as we explore Britain by Narrowboat:

I am 56 and I don’t mix well with others don’t have friends due to it, it’s a running joke with my wife that I am unsociable old git, but being alone is better than trying to talk to people and crowds is a big Nono, we were in a supermarket once and it got busy and I just had to get out so we left the trolly full of item and left, that was years ago now but at the time I just wanted to get out of there, I sit in the van nowadays while my wife does the shopping. I used to skive off of school as the class room was a horrible place to be. The more people talk about it the better as it makes others realise they are not the only ones like it so thank you for that.

Colin, I like you, used to avoid conversation with strangers. It wasn't until I realized that me saying hello, or having a little chat with someone, may be the only social interaction they have with anyone that day, week, or month. Imagine that on your worst day, you alone have the power to make a strangers day just a little bit brighter. It does get easier the more you talk to people, a kind word doesn't cost a thing, and could mean the world to the one receiving it. Just something to think about. P.S. I love the quality of the videos, you two do an excellent job with them.

for people with autism or severe anxiety it does not get easier with practice and depending on the day can be very stressful and wearing. I agree that a cheerful greeting is a wonderful thing, just don't press it if not reciprocated.

I'm 72 and still have trouble talking to people. I think it started with my mother always answering for me. Apparently I didn't talk fast enough for her. She got tired of waiting for me to talk. So she would talk for me. So, I thought, why bother, she will answer I didn't need to. If I'm one on one it's better. But throw in a third or more and I'm lost. Keep up the great videos, guys. So that's what that funny-shaped piece of wood in my boat is - a Calder Spike! I bought my well-travelled boat last March from a broker and found various objects I didn't recognise, one turned out to be an anti-vandal key but the lump of wood remained a mystery. It was obviously made for a specific purpose so I kept it - and now I know what the purpose is, so thanks for that!
Also thank you Colin for explaining about your inner struggles, you are performing a real service to us all by talking about it so clearly and honestly. I became a continuous cruiser 18 months ago and I love it but one big regret is that I had to give working as a Samaritans volunteer but I have alerted my old colleagues to your vlog because I think it will help volunteers to understand how to respond when someone with similar struggles reaches out to them. The Samaritans training is very good but there is nothing like a clear description from 'the inside'.

I grew up in a different country and I have to say a lot of people here want to chat but don't have great conversational skills. (I'm generalising, I know!) So I feel like you are being hard on yourself, I bet if we chatted you would be fine because I make an effort to carry a conversation and watch for cues from the other person. So I guess I'm saying don't take all that on you ok? Two people need to make an effort to have a good conversation. Also some of us introverts need long stretches of solitude between social interaction and that is absolutely fine and acceptable

One would never have known the tortured soul he possessed. The pressure of always expected to be on and happy....he was a master of not burdening his friends with his inner demons. He got past this with help from his true friends and counciling. No matter the burdens you carry, those who care about you, accept them as part of you and everyone else can pound sand.

Thank you for sharing your mental health perspective. Most people have no idea how difficult it can be to just make it through a day. My daughter was diagnosed with BPD in her teens, but at that time (early 1990's) there was not much information. Through the years her mental health deteriorated and it was not until years later while taking a class at NAMI, I learned what was going on in her head. I sobbed when I realized how horrendous her struggle had really been. I am glad you have shared your own struggles as it makes people more aware and hopefully sympathetic to others who may have issues which are not readily apparent.

Colin, you don't owe anyone any kind of social interaction. They have zero claim upon your time or life energy. That you're willing to give it, and feel bad when you can't, speaks volumes about your good nature - many people would just tell the world to piss off. The needn't have even an ongoing issue, maybe they just heard that a loved one passed, or their spouse lost their job, or 1001 different things. Let's choose compassion and empathy - we can do that even if we don't know the root cause of their differences.

Although i have always gone to work, i find it just holds me back, and people just think i'm weird, and even though i have worked on the same job for 23years i still get anxious before i go to work every day, because i don't want to talk to people.

Just watched this episode of your journey. I spent my working life in the NHS helping people with psychological problems and what you say is not uncommon. I’m retired now and wouldn’t want to say this or that not knowing all the circumstances but a few words of advice that might help. Starting conversations is “small talk” so that’s what it should be and all it should be in most cases. You can think about the subjects people bring up, like the weather where have you been where are you going you get the gist. You can practice a few of these and become good at being the lead in the conversation nice day looks like rain etc. One other thing to practice and get good at is ending the conversation, we’ll have a good day, nice to meet you, have a good journey, I’ll need to be getting on. Enjoy the videos even though not a boater just started watching the Amazon series then followed onto UA-cam👍

I'm terribly shy when it comes to talking to strangers and acquaintances and even people I've known all my life! I'm terrible at socializing. My mind just sort of blanks (sort of like stage fright- which coincidentally I get too :-) ), and I then look everywhere but at the person and when I do manage some sort of 'conversation' (if it can be called that) and I feel uncomfortable, I find it impossible to meet the person's gaze, despite my best efforts. Worst of all, when I'm uncomfortable I laugh at the silliest, not even funny things. Ugh. And then I go beet red because I feel even more self-conscious. So yea, you're not alone. Thank you for sharing all your worries and troubles and thoughts. Your videos are enjoyable anyway, but your honesty about your struggles make them all the more engaging.

Hi guys, I just love your canal videos ! they are so entertaining and funny. We moved to Oz in 1986 (there arent any navigable canals here !) We travel around the country in our motorhome (well we will when covid allows ! ) There is so much stigma surrounding mental health issues, so I think its brilliant when you talk about your mh issues so openly and honestly; this is what encourages the general public to think about this often taboo subject and not to be quick to judge or criticise others. Stay safe and keep on boating !

  • @mikehaldane4061

As I work my way through the Vlogs, I am really finding the sections on Mental Health are providing very thoughtful commentary on the issues that Colin, in particular, feels and has to deal with.
What I am finding most useful is the way that, in general, the issues are being dealt with and edited into the main Vlogs. This is, in my opinion, bringing the issues that you (both) deal with into a clear focus of how the issues are part of day to day life and not as separate stand alone events that are easily compartmentalised and that can be dealt with in isolation.
Vlog9 does stand out as a necessary precursor to the way in which you are very successfully editing these issues now and even though he has less to say, the section done by Shaun in an earlier Vlog (52?) was very good.
I would hope that it will make me much more thoughtful, in the future, of how I find people when I meet and deal with them.

Love the video, the scenery around y'all is amazing!! I agree about the starting a conversation or even continue one, i give enough to be polite or maybe a bit rude depending on the situation, but some folks just chat away and that's when you just nod your head and smile.

Hi Colin, I'm the same only the other way round, I can chat away to passers by and strangers. But when it comes to talking to people I know, I get hung up, I think it is because what I say matters to them and I don't want to annoy them or say the wrong thing. Whereas with strangers I know I won't see them again so don't care what they think. Hearing your stories makes me think a lot more about trying to tell people what is going on in my head and the thought processes that lead to my actions.
