Canal Boat Diaries. Narrowboat Life on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal - Ep. 68
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 сер 2024
- In our latest canal boat diary... How's life on a Narrowboat on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal? Haha! A tight squeeze!
Continuing our journey across Britain by Narrowboat, we leave Shepley Bridge and make a sharp left turn at Cooper Bridge onto the Huddersfield Broad Canal. After an overnight stopover at Aspley Marina, we start our ascent towards Standedge Tunnel at Marsden on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
Passing through some beautiful towns and villages such as Linthwaite and Slaithwaite we encounter empty pounds, closed locks and the weather goes from heatwave to monsoon.
Colin stops off at Sparth Reservoir to find out why the locals went to war with British Waterways and goes for a swim in the water.
Catch-up on every vlog, from the beginning, in order, as we explore Britain by Narrowboat:

You two couldn't be any CUTER if you tried! Honestly! As always, another GREAT vlog...I can't say it enough. You live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. THANK YOU, so much, for sharing your adventures with us. Looking forward to the next installment - Standedge Tunnel - YAHOO! Have a great weekend.
Yeah, next weeks vlog is a biggie! I know because I'm in it 😉 😂 xx
@@FoxesAfloat You got out of the streaking bit, but still managed to show skin in this week's episode! You know, you could always explain the ink on your arms, if you're ever so inclined... ;)
You know what we want. Streaking, that's what we want.
Haha! Check out our social media today 🙈
I have to say you both are so refreshing and love that you take everything in stride. I find my self laughing and for that i thank you. I know you did this video last year but in these trying times of Covid , i love watching you .
Thank you so much!
Lovely viddy Gents. Thanks for making Fridays fabulous.
Aww, you're more than welcome, Carolyn. xx
Bless Dillon. I love that you lit the fire for him. My spaniel hates getting wet. Looking forward to next weeks. Good luck. 👍👍💖
Thank you. He loves the fire, although we kinda hogged it once we'd moored up 😂
I love that you share your adventure with us, thank you very much
It's a pleasure! Hope you're enjoying it as much as we are? ❤️
Boo hoo !! I wanted to see you make that really sharp turn at Cooper Bridge & have been looking forward to it all week. Go back & do it again - and this time bloody well film it !! Ha ha !! 😎😨
And much as we all love you Colin, I'm sure I speak for many when I say "Thank goodness you won't be streaking next week" !! 😲😨😞
We'll have to agree to disagree on the streaking, Stephen 😂
@@FoxesAfloat Ha ha - good one Colin !! 😎😃😄
Keep up the vlogs.....it’s the highlight of my wife and I’s Friday.... we sit back (after a few drinks) and live the dream through your two, watching your vlogs on the TV.
Thanks guys! Don’t get too drunk 🥴
Well done boys, love sharing your adventures 👌👏👏👏👏👌👏❤️
Thanks, Terry! 👍🏻
Wow, the variation of locks, canal types and beautiful places is amazing. The more we see of your adventures the more we understand what a remarkable legacy the canal networks of England are. Combined with your way of sharing this experience as always looking forward to next week’s vlog. Thanks guys!
Thanks, James! x
You guys are so loveable! It’s 2:30 AM and I’ve got to shut off my tablet and go to sleep, but I keep watching your videos!
I did want to thank Colin for your comments on mental health. So many people are being helped due to your openness!
Thank you!
Hey 👋 Thank you so much! I hope you managed to get to sleep 😂 xx
When I went blackberry picking more went into my mouth than into the pail. Grand mom would make pies. A wonderful child memory from sixty plus years ago.
Awww, lovely!
I never realized, when I moved from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, in the USA, out to Las Cruces, NM, how much I would miss interacting with happy and healthy partnerships that were the norm there. Here in New Mexico, happy caring and open same sex partnerships...while they may be happy and caring, the smart couple seems to keep their "open" as quiet and closed as possible. I had not realized how much I missed that environment till I found your vlog. Keep on sailing you Silver Foxes, and thanks for sharing your travels with us.
Awww, John. Thank you! It's just a pity that love can't be open, true and accepted equally around the world (yet) 😉 x
The best! You really do everything to please us! Thank you!
I try! Thank you for saying that 👍🏻❤️
Loved the beautiful scenery shots as always. Just like being there. Love your goofiness, makes me laugh. And as always, love ya!
Aww, Agnes! Thank you ❤️
You guys are so fun to watch. It always brightens my mood. Your videos keep getting better and better. I'm anxiously waiting for the next video to see the tunnel !
Cheers !
Ah, yeah, the tunnel. Gonna be a cracking little episode. I know because I'm in it! 😂
You two are so lovely, it’s my time out watching you two and Shaun’s laugh is infectious x
Thanks, Wendy! 👍🏻💜
I love you two guys, your my fix, my drug and my therapy!! Thank you so much for doing what you do and do so amazingly well 🤗😁
Awww, thanks, Micky! 👍🏻
This video was just so much fun. You two were enjoying yourselves a little too much - and there was cake, good humor, and wonderful innuendo.
Cake, humour, innocent innuendo, fun. What else do you need? x Have a wonderful trip. Don't worry about the weather, just enjoy the days xxxxx
lol - High Noon on the canal. As usual, a delightful video.
Thanks, Cheryl. x
My week is complete. A great vlog as usual. Take care.
Thanks, Callum! Have a fab weekend mate 👍🏻
@@FoxesAfloat likewise chaps.
I love these Vlogs! There’s such a gentle happiness and humour- it’s obvious this life is great for your mental health. And again- Silver Fox is a beautiful boat!
You're right in both ways! Life is helping me and Silver Fox is a STUNNER! 🤩 xx
I look forward to your Friday vlogs very much, thanks. AJ
Aww, I hope you enjoy them too? Haha! Thanks AJ. ❤️
This has to be my favourite video so far. Colin got his top off, twice 😜
Haha! Thanks. 🤣
Brilliant as always boys my Friday is complete
Aww, thank you! Have a fab weekend! x
Awesome vlog! And how hardy you both are, cruising on in the wet ... love it!
No choice, there was nowhere to moor up 😂 #HardcoreBoaters
"High noon on the Huddersfield narrow". Absolute classic 😍😂😂😂
We continue to binge watch your vlogs from the beginning so we can catch up to your present. We are enjoying your unique perspective of the canals and appreciate your openness in talking about autism, specifically Asperger’s. One of our grandsons has Asperger’s and we know a bit about the social challenges that presents.
Sean re: cake " I've already had a piece " nearly half the cake missing 😁 my kind of portion . If your going to have lump of cake ( not a slice) have a big un .
Hope all goes well through the tunnel
Take care .
Yeah, that cake said '16 Servings'. HAHA! 4 at most 😋
Well that was four seasons in one day. You earned your slice of cake-both if you. Your arms must have been aching after the many locks.
You can say that again!
(You don't have to though) 😂
Home made blackberry wine from the silver fox sounds like the best tonic what a hectic day and good old British changeable weather too boot...have a fab week😎
Thanks, Rachel. Don't be giving Shaun ideas about making wine 😂 #hic
Don’t forget that we just sit in our armchair, with a coffee, and you are doing the work come rain 🌧 come heat, low water and lots of manual locks, edit and we are just wanting more of you traveling adventure, an unsatisfying audience waiting for next Friday, can’t get enough 🤗👍🇫🇷🇩🇰
Haha! I’d never dare put it like that 😂
Colin shirtless always gets a thumbs up from me!
😏
Thank god for bow thrusters, and you lads should wear hats in the sunshine. Sorry to sound like yer mum :-)
It's alright, mam! 😂
@@FoxesAfloat Your room's a mess, and where we you last night? :-)
Can't wait for next week, jealous of the cake!
It was GOOOOOOORGEOUS! 😋
Having spent countless days at my Grandad's at Fenay Bridge, I've driven, cycled and walked around Huddersfield and its surrounds; never seen it by canal. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Cheers from North Vancouver.
Our pleasure, Simon 😀
Missed this vblog the first time around. One of the best
Aww thanks!
LOL! I think Shaun used that bowthruster on purpose because he didn't want everyone to see his partner streaking. Another great vlog! Can't wait to see what happens with the tunnel next week.
Haha! That wouldn’t stop me 😈
Next weeks vlog is a corker! I know because I’m in it! 😂
Lovely, wonderful and informative episode as always.
Thank you! x
“Low bridge, everybody down, low bridge, ‘cause we’re coming to a town, and you’ll always know your neighbor, you’ll always know your pal, if you’ve ever navigated on the Erie Canal.” From Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal by Pete Seeger.
I'm pleased you are going through "the" tunnel it's one of those experiences not to be missed well worth the effort in my opinion for what it's worth
Yeah, we last did it about 15 years ago but looking forward to this week! 🙈
Cant wait for the standedge tunnel vid. Me and my partner have had lovely walks along the canal from uppermill to standedge, so were really looking forward to it. And as always another great video 👍🏻
Thanks, Darren. Next weeks is a CORKER!
ha! I KNEW you couldn't resist Huddersfield! :-) debris, tight bends and all!
Colin, you COULD have done a Colin Firth coming out of the reservoir....oh, wait, you think he's an old fogey. I meant a "Pride and Prejudice" Colin Firth, when he was still looking good!
and Shaun, that was HUGE piece of cake!
Haha! You and Colin Firth 😂 That cake was indeed massive! It lasted 10 minutes. 😋
You guys make great vids. I love the way you incorporate the local history and trivia into your vids. Now we must wait a whole week for another. Torture.
Ahh, sorry you’ve got to wait. Next week’s is worth waiting for though 👍🏻
What else do we want! ... A piece of that cake haha :) Great vlog lads :)
Aww, too late, Steven. Waaaaaaay too late 😂
I enjoy your trips so very much! Wish we had canals like that in America....
Glad you like them!
I wish we had them I'm in Massachusetts we have a couple of them I mean but it's not the same thing. In my hometown of Lowell Massachusetts we have canals throughout the whole city (these are power canals like the ones the guys travel to England they still maintained they powered jarring water wheels along the mile of Mills and throughout the city three to five story brick buildings with hundreds of looms operating. ) but there's only one major canal that's navigable by boat. We At one time were the biggest textile producer in in the United States 1826 until probably another hundred years. And it makes me wish we had canals throughout the state. cuz we have locks and the stone embankments very similar. The technology was stolen from Manchester England anyways. Lol the one section that is navigable it's about 2 mi and they do Long boat tours and it's really nice and you go out into the Merrimack River . Which is huge looking at the videos that the guys make when they're on the Thames. It's as wide if not wider in many places. But again only partially navigable because there's dams and such. And the old Middlesex canal which was actually was to move goods from Lowell to Boston and back and forth 22 miles 23 miles it is only around in certain small segments these days sadly. What a great trip it would be to take today.
That water definitely looked cold! As always love watching you guys, just positive and relaxing.
Haha! It was a bit chilly but it's impossible to stop me taking my clothes off and skinny dipping! 😂
As always a pleasure watching you two.
Thanking you again for sharing your views of England and your superb explanations of all that interests you along the cut.
Nice to see both enjoying life again without being saddled by depression.
G.
Thanks, Gary. Oh, it will come back. It always does, but just have to get on with it. 👍🏻
We want to see you streaking. Have a cocktail and just go. LOL
Haha! I live naked most of the time anyway 😂
What a beautiful part of the country wish we had more time to explore when we visited from Australia 5 weeks just isn't enough, love your vlogs
You'll have to come back. A long way though 😂 xx
stressful day, this was the perfect antidote.
Glad we could help. Have a peaceful weekend, Ralph ❤️
From Huddersfield and I love walking down the canal . Beautiful area. Also the fact you pronounced Slaithwaite correctly makes me all warm and fuzzy
Loved it, binge watching the back catalogue and enjoying every minute.x
You're the best!
I love your vlogs! May I suggest something tiny? When talking about a place or a city, it'd be great if there is a map of UK where you could point out that place. Just for those of us not from the UK haha
I'm from Canada myself.
Thanks, Danyal 👍🏻
Informative and entertaining! Thanks for sharing your adventures. Outstanding videos. Thanks for sharing. You guys are delightful!
Awww, Mark. Thank you 👍🏻
Keep them coming lads 👍👍😁😁
Thanks, Paul! We'll try. Next week's is a corker!
The vlogs are great - really relaxing to watch - but a 360 left turn -- straight forwards it is haha ^_^
You know what I meant 🙄😂
Beautifully shot, as usual, can't quite see, "high noon on the Huddersfield narrow" as a hit at the cinema :-) BTW, I bumped into a couple of Canadians who are over here at the moment, on the canals, they watch your vlog so a shout out to the Québécois! Thanks again Silver Foxes for a Friday treat!
Haha! Oi! Watch with the free shoutouts 😂 Just kidding. Thanks for watching and commenting ❤️
❤️ y’all
The outtakes are a hoot.
Filling the stress lines with lickerish may be a marketable spa treatment ………………
If so I want a cut.
Thanks for favorite videos each week.

👏🏻
Isn't Justin Bieber covered in Nutella 'lickerish'? 😉
Hello,Every time I stop by you have great content. Thanks for sharing Have a great weekend.💕🌹😉😎👍👍👏
Thank you, Max. Very kind of you to say that ❤️
Ahhhh Shaun we were counting on you for the streak, hahaha
Haha! Check out our social media 😉
Ok. Will check there again. Lol. But that water did look a little chilly.
I am constantly amazed how one can steer a 57' long boat from the rear! The view has to be awful from that far back.
It’s worked for thousands of years 👍🏻
Think of the people on wide body 70 footers
I tried it on a friend's boat, not quite as long but not far off, and due to moving so slowly and fairly predictably it not as hard as I thought it would be. And that was without the benefit of bow or stern thrusters.
Thank you again, for your fabulous & entertaining cruises.
Without exaggeration, in spite of us paying a fortune for Sky tele, our most watched channel is You-tube. Viewing on the lounge tele, it makes superior family viewing. A couple of our friends come regularly to view this premium channel. A couple more canal vids then a couple of railway vids. Brill!
👍🏻
Great video as always
Thanks, Terry!
Love you two, Im addicted to your videos. You compliment each other, what a lovely life you lead. You should now write a book together. "Tales of the riverbank". By colin and shaun.xx
Maybe one day!
But I want to see you go streaking down the tow path 😝🤩
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank god for the bow thruster!:)
Haha! Shaun loves his bow thruster 😂
Colin and Shawn, The quality keeps getting better and better. The mix of the serious and funny is about right. We do enjoy the technical stuff about how the different canals work. Thanks! Larry and Sherri
Hey guys! 👋
Thank you so much!
Wow- I'm totally hooked on your channel. I stumbled across you from the excellent Martin Zero channel and I'm slowly working my way through your videos. I've had a few great week-long canal boat holidays but you make it sound like it could be a viable full time lifestyle choice. Particularly love that your lovely dog has a handle on top!!! Keep up the good work- I'm watching in awe. . . .
Aww, Tim, thank you! Welcome to our channel 👍🏻
Damn bow thruster...
😂😂😂
Thanks for the great vlog! I really liked the architectural details in this old, very narrow canal. You can really see the history, workmanship and labor of love that was put into making this lovely structure so very long ago and in it's restoration recently. Yet with so many locks I can see why it's not a hugely popular destination so thank you for bringing us along and showing us this lovely jewel. Beautiful job everyone!
Thank you! It does have a unique beauty. x
Always love your videos. It is the blend of fact, excellent filming and editing, your warmth, honesty and the locations, you don't shy away from the industrial areas too. Great work. Thank you gents
That's a lovely comment. Thanks, Malcolm 👍🏻
Lads you need to protect yourselves from the sun to avoid skin cancers! Sunscreen and a hat. And some shade if you can rig something for the cruiser stern. Just looking out for two of my favourite Yorkshiremen!
Yes, mum! 😂
Did you make the cake??? man that looks SOOOOOO good
I think we bought that one. It only lasted about 10 minutes 😂
Lol. Good thing there are lots of shops you can get more great looking cakes. I love to bake and enjoy sharing recipes.
Thanks guys for another great Vlog🚣 I appreciate all the suffering to make our ride along fun . Be safe . Craig
Haha! I loved it, even if it was FREEEEZING! 🥶
Oh yeah, leave us hanging when things get adventurous and a bit Wiley. LOL Looking forward to your next video. I'm crossing my fingers the Silver Fox makes it through with no additional dings. You guys already know the outcome already. We have to wait a week. Can't wait. See you guys then.
😂
HELLO I'm Robert from Cape Breton Nova Scotia I just started watching your travels I'm enjoying very much keep up the good work guys. As a couple how long has it been as a couplee cheers Bob
Thanks, Robert and welcome! We've been together almost 28 years 👍🏻👍🏻
Have you done a vlog on bow thrusters? They looked very useful getting round ‘Tight Bend’ and would be interested to know more about them.
Hi Paul. No, we haven't done a vlog about it. It's basically a tube built across the bow with a motor and two little propellors. We control it from the stern.
Foxes Afloat thanks, do you have left and right arrows or a ‘joystick’ and is the motor always on standby ready to be used? I understand they are battery powered motors, is the battery in the bow locker? Many thanks
Guys...... you certainly deserved that cake! Rather you than me swimming in that reservoir too...... Great vlog, as we have come to expect!
Aww, thank you, Mike. The cake lasted about 10 minutes 😂
exellent lad's, huddersfield narrow canal look's interesting .Standedge tunnel should be great fun looking forward to watching it just go steady,i presume you will have somebody from the tunnel trust giving you guidence throughout your passage through the tunnel.Fasinating history is Stan-edge as the locals say , anyway you lads put your crash hats on ,and hold on tight and wear something warm whilst you in there.Nice cafe there as well Enjoy the experiance good luck
Thanks, Peter! Gonna be a great vlog. I know because I'm in it 😂
Good thing your not picking blackberries in Oregon, US. You may have to compete with the bears!
Ouchy! 🐻
What happened to the blackberries?
I hope we find out. I'm sure the cook has something special planned.
Lol! Shaun ate them 😂
Thought he might - though I hoped he'd have baked a lovely blackberry crumble instead!
What a narrow system. WOW
Yeah, Only 20 miles but feels like more.
What another fantastic vlog gents, addictive viewing, great content and giggles along the way, keep them coming
Cheers! (Smiffy Miffed my fave UA-cam name) 😂
I must confess. I'm not keen on this narrow canal. I felt a bit claustrophobic just watching!
Haha! I get what you mean 😂
What’s your accent, boys?
Yorkshire.
22mins 35s of pure joy! Boys you bring lightness and happiness to the day when I watch your Vlogs.Bring on the tunnel!!!! Safe Barging :)
Thanks, Jez. Next week's is gonna be a cracking episode! I know because I'm in it 👍🏻
I'm re watching all the narrowboat stuff. Definitely get an ac on the new boat could do a window unit or stand alone or one that runs off the motor
Colin & Shaun..."SKIN ALERT"...you guys are sooo much fun. Would love to meet you in person and share some of that cake with you. Well probably a different one as you had already consumed a large portion, so there wouldn't be much left. I love your vlogs...so much fun and very informative. Plain to be seen that you take the time and make an effort to research these canals and locks for each blog.
Got to be honest... that cake lasted about 10 minutes 😋
Lived in Huddersfield all my life and never realised how picturesque the canal was
It's lovely !
Regarding Black Berry picking, I'll remind you of one of the late great Sir Terry Wogan's finest quotes "Only pick the ones waist height and above."
Ah, like yellow snow 😕
Another great video lads love the attitude, nothing that can't be fixed by coffee and cake. Dillon had me in stitches though with his dog logic after his swim, "I'm wet now, I'm not going to get wetter so I don't care I just don't want to miss anything".
Haha! That’s exactly what he’s like 😂
Great vlog gents, that narrow canal would put me right off lol, top job 👍👍
Just wait while next week's episode 😬
I suspect Shaun’s hand probably slipped right off his tiller at the very thought of Colin streaking for us all in the next vlog! No wonder he had to make good use of his front end thruster thingy. And all that talk of erections, bangs, bends and foreboding tunnels! But actually what amazes me is Colin’s ‘literally a 360 degree left turn’ 😂 (you know I’m only winding you up.....where’s me windlass? 😃). Loved how the canals are so very different in this old industrial city landscape and in a ‘proper narrow’ canal.
😂
Beautiful scenery...
You guys are so lucky to have it as your back garden!!
It really is!
So good to see you guys cruising in wet and hot weather. You are true narrowboaters. Thanks
haha! Lots of that in this country 👍🏻
That looks like a princess cake without the outer marzipan layer. YUM.
🤤
Great episode guys, thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Scott! x
If I had legs like yours I would take them back to the shop I bought them in. Great vlog
You were going to get a friendly smile, but now you can make do with 🤨
Nothing wrong with my legs! 😂
HAHAHA
He has to be careful about going past KFC...😜
HAHAHA
As always excellent video guys, plus, still say Silver Fox, with or without the sarcophagus on the roof is the very best looking narrow boat.
It's a kayak.
