As I understand the BOM is currently ADSB IN only, any plans on also doing ADSB OUT, this would be an excellent option for vintage aircraft without electrical systems, like an original Cub etc.
Once again, the experimental aviation world is leading the innovations of flying. I can fully understand the reasoning behind certifying equipment that is used in an airplane that may carry for pay passengers. But I also believe that their is clearly a need to fast track innovations into the certified aircraft world, when clearly the benefits are there. Cheers from Winnipeg.
Another advantage of the BOM is that you can transfer the device between all of your aircraft. Buy one BOM and several mounts. I read that you can preset your n-numbers into your tablet for the ADS-B and easily switch aircraft.
Love my BOM! In my opinion, it's the perfect back-up system - completely independent power and static/pitot. I used to fly with a Sentry as my back-up but that can only give GPS-derived groundspeed, not IAS which is what you really want. BOM delivers.
But this is revolutionary. You don't need FAA approval to put one on your plane and bring it into the current decade of the 21st century. How 'bout that? Screw them foot draggers.
Karl from Fly With The Guys did a product review of this several days ago. His recommendation was an external power switch, and a way to see how much power its battery held.
Very much impressed with both presenters. The information & system functionality demonstrated definitely prompts attention to incorporate the equipment as safety redundancy for certified aircraft, especially legacy era. We’ll done!
That thing is pretty slick! Actually both units are, but that BOM unit is pretty impressive. I've been seeing ads for it for a while now, but never looked into what it actually did. What a game-changer! Great interview!
Man! This is great stuff! I am toying with building experimental and this might push me across that line! It takes the "mental" out of the instrument part of the project! Just need transponder/ADS-B out and at least one radio!
I purchased a BOM for use on my J3 Cub. While the potential seemed really amazing, I had connectivity issues between the BOM and my iPad and phone. Customer service at Levil was great. They replaced the chip in my BOM and returned it but it still had connectivity issues, sometimes not connecting until several miles into the flight, other times not at all. I sent the unit back in and they replaced with another. I continued to have connectivity issues with it so I sold it and went with ForeFlight and a Stratus. No regrets since. I love the concept, but with such limited functionality it was more of a nuisance than a safety enhancement.☹️
What a very professional explanation and presentation of this product. I have actually seen one in use on a Kitfox but looking forward to your review. Thanks as always for bringing us content.
Amazing review! I have been interested in this as a backup since it came out. And now the other concepts they discussed are very compelling. This product might be a game changer. Forget those $50.000 dollar panels
I’m now thinking a $6k panel budget vs a $60k before. I am also thinking how slick it would be not to have a vacuum pump. Has anyone got a good solid state AHRS solution?
I'm installing the 3AW into an E-LSA right now and it's connected to a panel mount iPad Pro 9.7 in a Guardian Avionics mount. Looks like a true glass panel aircraft. The owner is also a iFly GPS user and having both displays on the iPad is nothing short of amazing. Great product. looking forward to your review of both products.
For an LSA application, the bomb looks mighty intriguing. Analog AS and ALT plus BOM ticks dang near all the boxes Figure out Transponder and ADSB out to complete the integration
The bom is awesome especailly having all info on my tablet i use it as my gps and i noticed that im paying attention to the angle of attack as well now.. Well worth the money and i have it mounted so i can easily take on and off as soon as im done flying. The only thing i wish it had is an outside indications so you know its on and or off. There is a light but on the inside where you put the sd card. Great product
That is just awesome! I assume it was thoroughly tested, and I would have liked to hear more about their testing/vetting process. Maybe this also could encourage companies like Garmin etc. to offer more cost effective products to the experimental market. Anything to make things safer is a huge plus!! 8) JMHO --gary
Hi my friends. AMAZING THECNOLOGY! Gadgets, in time, are getting more and more precize and reliable while getting smaller and smaller. It would have been interesting if you asked them about their background, I.E where are they from and what and where have they studied, how did they come up whith these devices; long story short: Who are they? May be in the next interview when both of you have installed your devices in "Lola" and "Wong Warrior" and make a review of them. As always, cheers from NE patagonia, Argentina. Please keep your excelent work coming up!
App for iPad has no demo mode IF BOM hardware is not present? Running speed for BOM needs 60 knots? If so it too low for many home built aircraft, many having stall speeds of around 30 knots. Out of country support needed for repairs/warranty etc, EG Australia and others? Looks like a great product and guessing there may be future firmware updates?
How does the BOM turbine handle icing conditions? Can I use this system for IFR? Can one use this to get IFR ratings if the trainer plane has an old certified IFR six-pack and VORTAC capability? 😢want to learn GPS approaches as well as old school?
I understand that AOA is a pressure differential system designed to work at close to stall speeds but I would like to get a PIREP on whether it actually works for accelerated stalls at higher speeds and cleaned up configuration.
Great stuff... Would only consider the A/P if it has a wired connection in the event of a runaway I would want nice old-fashion switch to shut it off with
ADSB without worrying about battery is a great addition to the airplane. To be honest I would want like 3 more dummy shells just so the airplane looks like it's armed and ready for battle!
@@baseballlife5884 I feel the same way xavion is absolutely amazing. I mean hello wake turbulence. Austin Meyer is tremendously underestimated he is a damn genius.
The Uavionix AV20 has angle of attack and is under 1k so that is a potential option, although I've heard of some issues with Uavionix. The AV20 also has many other functions. Thought I would throw that out there.
Hi guys Music volume is a little nuts. Cool shows saw this item couple years ago and got me excited for 1 day building an airplane in the experimental category
How does the bom do in cold weather. Like -30 degrees Fahrenheit for weeks at a time? If it does well in temps like that it will be awesome for people like me who fly in the Arctic.
This looks terrific. But I read that people often have problems with their iPads overheating and shutting down. Clearly that would be a bummer. Is there a way to ensure the iPad doesn't shut down or lose power?
I've seen iPad mounts that have a fan behind to keep them cool. With the advances in tech, I bet there is a flexible solar film that could be attached to the roof that could charge a dedicated instrument battery
A little confused on the ADSB portion. Is it giving only adsb in information to your iPad? Is there a conflict with ATC on dual ADSB out signals or does it not have ADSB out. Perhaps I’m over complicating this and perhaps it is only giving you ADSB in info when you are on the Bom app only. Specifically, I like most folks already have ADSB through one of the new transponders. I happen to go with the panel mount Stratus ESG in and out, in my Bellanca. What are the implications of having another ADSB through the BOM. Sorry, I’m a little slow on this one. Thanks.
Can this be put onto multiple iPads at the same time? Basically you could have two full size iPads mounted in view to give a full glass cockpit experience.
Thanks for the great intro to some neat new products! Also before I run off and buy another one of the products you've recommended without letting you get credit, is there a Coupon code or similar for iFly GPS?
This looks like an incredible product, so many features built in such a compact design, but it raises one question for me. What if God forbid the company goes under and ceases to exist? Will all the hardware be obsolete with no software updates for newer iOS/Android versions? Hopefully that never happens
Well, thats always going to be the worry with anybody that's not a Boeing or a Garmin. It's the age-old argument of the large companies not caring for the little guy/poor service/lack of innovation vs the up and coming, hungry, innovative, responsive company. And many times, those up and coming hungry ones are either turned into the large, could care less big dogs (like Foreflight did when Boeing gobbled them up) or they can fade away. But Levil looks legit and they have their whole CNC family business anyway, so I think they're pretty solid.
That just shows how cheap things can be, but of course they have to throw "certified" out there to make instruments overpriced. If it works, it works; certified or not.
@@TakingOff Thank you for your reply, this would be a great cost reduction on experimental Helicopters as well, it would fit right next to the pedo tube under the nose
