Thanks for the cool comment Ian, 😎 life is always good when fishing, the cakes, brews and fish just polish it to a shine 😉 thanks and all the best Ian. 🎣👍
I have lived in Wallasey for over 70 years and as a kid I used to fish the whole stretch of the prom from the Town Hall to the former Coastguard Station at Harrison Drive.....now run by RNLI beach patrol.Over the years the sandbanks have changed dramatically due to the many changes to the sea defence structures.Back in the early 60's we would catch mainly dabs,a few flounders, small cod and whiting.Catching a plaice was a rarity and a bass was a sensation.....as was a weaver fish!I am astonished to see what sea anglers are pulling out of the Mersey nowadays.I had heard that rays were prolific at low water adjacent to Fort Perch Rock but 2 years ago I was amazed when cycling past Bubbles World of Play at night to see a bloke pull a thornback over the sea wall. But topping it all is a video of blokes fishing by the Town Hall catching sizeable smooth hounds and doggies. But these anglers are much more imaginative in their choice of baits than we used to be.We only used lug and ragworm ......the rag was dug locally from the beds off the new prom long since covered by sand.I recall I used a 12 foot hollow glass beachcaster and a Penn Surfmaster reel.Happy days!
Thanks for the comment pal, so much to love about current sea fishing, the river these days is much improved from the fishing of yesteryear and yes so many baits available now but while the rivers fishing has improved overall sadly across the country fish stocks have declined for so many different reasons. This all goes to show how important it is to savour the fishing of this fantastic area that is the Mersey and surrounding estuary area. All the best and thanks for getting in touch. Tim & Dave. 🎣👍
As you will no doubt agree, the Mersey was nothing short of being a sewer way back when but vastly improved when the waterways up stream improved. I do hope we are not heading back that way.
I really refuse to go looking into the sewage discharge information more than is given to us in the media I’ll be honest, not because I wish to be ignorant but more as it will no doubt REALLY frustrate me to the point of anger, especially considering the profiteering I hear about with it all. So let’s just stay on the side of hope and say the future is hopefully not going to the same as before or gosh forbid worse. As ever unless a mass protest in the tens of millions happens us citizens are at the will of the companies and the the people in power, let’s just again “hope” there is a clear distinction between the people in power and the companies this involves as we are surely a democracy arnt we ? (Way more political than I normally get but must have caught me on a rainy day 🫣😉) all the best regardless pal. Tim.🤞🎣🤷
I remember decent rag beds over the vale park egremont area bout 30 years ago, it was a rough gritty mixture of ground with blackish mud underneath, decent flatty sized and also used to get some huge king rag but the shifting sands have covered those beds now 😒
Nice video Tim. That was some strike for a little whiting! If you are using size 2 hooks they generally hook themselves 🎣🐟 Those scones do look good. Keep'em comming 👍
Is a pretty standard strike for me and never had issues till now, plus those whiting give similar bites to decent fish sometimes so I just strike as I would for all fish but perhaps I should be a little more gentle with my strikes if that's the results of such practice. The strike does look more brutal than it was my strikes are quick rather than powerful. Yeah I'm enjoying the old man's Scone/Cakes. I read every comment to him about the cakes 😋😉👍thanks for the comment Ceirion tight lines pal. 👍
I honestly don't know if he can make welsh cakes sure he'd have said if so... 🤣...hey don't worry I'll ask the question ...he may just take it as a challenge if not anyways, I'll be chief tester for you all 😉🍰😋...I'll let you know Ian...all the best and tight lines pal.
Thanks for the kind comment Frank, yeah I have actually gone some way to repair it already but not fully stuck in yet, just cut it down slightly and arranged so it slots into the other section, will epoxy and whip it I think. May do a video i may not, I'm very far from expertised in repair of rods so not sure if a video may look like I know about rod repair when I don't. I'll see, thanks again Frank. 👍🎣
Great video again.nice to have your old man and scones back 😂 gutted for you with the rod though....striking like that numerous times in the rods lifetime is inevitably going to weaken the rod hence the snap.what rigs you using btw? 🎣
Thanks for the comment Brian, what baffles me about the snapped rod is the fact the rod has only been used a handful of times by me so it's not had much if any of my strikes on it, where as my £8 ugly stick rod hasn't flinched and had it years, I have a vercelli (red rod) thinner rod and tip than the snapped rod again had it years with my clumsy strikes and no problems so who knows. Rig was a two hook flapper (by memory) all the best Brian, tight lines, strong rods 🎣😉👍
Hi thanks for the comment, I am unable to give any sound advice sadly on mono as me and my dad don’t tend to use it much these days as we use braid on all our reels. We found at snaggy areas like Otterspool mono would snap much much more than braid. I understand there is a huge debate whether mono or braid is best for sea fishing and for lots of different reasons but we find braid works best for us. (We use fixed spool reels) In all honesty I’ve hardly ever lost huge amounts of line using braid and tends to snap at the rig mostly, and for us mono was the opposite with lots of line lost when stuck in snags. Do try to get some advice from elsewhere too as like I say we are not very clued up on mono qualities or best breaking strains. Put simply if you have to use mono go as big as you can without affecting your reels ability to cast well (again sorry it’s simple advice but it’s the best I’ve got) hope you manage to find some fish pal and all the very best. From Tim & Dave. 🎣👍
Bit late with this comment mate but I’ll add my tuppence worth. All along the Mersey is quite fast flowing on both the flood and ebb, only rest you get is at slack water for an hourish low & high but for me I would always go for braid over mono, the tech advances in braid now are leaps and bounds away from the early days of “Dacron” which was really the forerunner to braid but not very good for casting mainly used on boat fishing at the time as an alternative to wire. You could just about get away with Dacron cast on a multiplier but it wasn’t great, nowadays though the modern braids are so good they provide excellent casts from both multiplier and fixed spool. Apologies for the history on braid but I’ll get back to the point, braid is a much thinner diameter than mono depending on grade you can be looking at 0.25% of the thickness of mono so say you’ve got 100 meters of line out in the water from your cast, with braid you can have 25% of the surface area having to hold against the force of tidal flow that runs through, as opposed to mono giving you more chance of holding bottom with the braid as there’s less surface area applying pressure to your anchored weight, although your question is 10 months old and your probably sorted now if you haven’t switched to braid yet please do as you won’t regret it, you don’t have to go mad with the cost of the higher end ones there’s no need, some of the lower cost are just fine just beware of the real cheap ones usually imported from China. Anyways tight lines mate
Much better advice than I originally gave, your info on braid vs mono was very informative and I didn’t take into account the extra tide pull with mono over braid. I tried to keep it simple by saying we use braid as it tends to break much less and further towards or only on or at the rig body but I must commend your input and great detail thanks very much for it, hope it helps whoever watches the vid/reads the comments. All the best pal & tight lines. Tim & Dave 🎣👍
@ I hope it helps, I first noticed the difference in braid when as I said when I used the early version Dacron while fishing the deep lochs in Scotland after the haddock, really rough ground in 200 ft or so of water so minimum 50/60 lb mono mainline with 70/80 lb trace body down to a heavy pork, the tidal pull was still horrendous so further trips started using wire (new rod with rollers required 😝) and because of thinner dia was much better but wire came with its own issues so I gave Dacron a try and very much same performance as the wire, modern braids are so much better than mono just a world of difference. Have noticed your replies to comments regarding no recent videos and fully understand balancing work life fishing and the great deal of work you put into post edit, so hope to see new vids from you soon very detailed including the screen descriptions regarding the marks and nearest parking, very very useful, had a go at the video lark but not being of the Stephen Spielberg calibre I found it frustrating as a newbie trying to work out a video editing suite and it ended up a load of tosh 😝 but I’ll keep trying, hoping to go local at some point on the Mersey next week see if I can nab me a cod, anyway tight lines Tim/Dave hope to see some more fishing from you guys soon oh and a brew and a cake of course
You dont really need to strike into any fish tbh if you just lift and reel into the fish i bet your hook up rate goes up but thats just my opinion from watching some very good fishermen 😉
Thanks for the comment, you’re not the only person to advise me this and I do try not to strike hard now a days, I must say a lot of the reason I have struck like that is excitement, but I’m better than I was with it. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch, tight lines and all the best. 👍🎣
Great video again gents , fish ,brews and cakes does life get any better than that ,
Thanks for the cool comment Ian, 😎 life is always good when fishing, the cakes, brews and fish just polish it to a shine 😉 thanks and all the best Ian. 🎣👍

Keep up the praise of the cakes he'll keep making them and I'll benefit 👍 🍰☕️😋😎 all the best and thanks again for watching.
Another cracking video in more ways than one 😂, fished that area many times with some decent fish coming out, keep up the good work, enjoyed that pal
Thanks Paul, oh it was a cracking session alright 😆 yeah is a beltin area, glad you enjoyed it. All the best and Tightlines.

What mono line do you recommend for fishing otterspool prom
