Always found the lyrics to Running On The Spot fantastically exciting. Twinned with the melody, the desperation in the lyric is spin tingling. I've got to say, this version is a little slow for my taste, and Start! Sounds half hearted also. But, what the hell?
Went to NYC in July 2013 to see him for this tour. Amazing concert, the Americans loved it. Still head and shoulders above most musicians today. Still can't get excited about Coldplay or U2, just find them so dour. Would have been so easy for PW to just go back to The Jam, tour every 5 years and and make loads of £. He hasn't and still strives to push and challenge himself. Interesting that Bono never had the talent or balls to go solo....
it's not that Bono lacks the balls to go solo; The Jam & U2 are apples & oranges different.....The Jam, unlike U2, were NOT schoolboy mates. PW split up the Jam at its peak for purely individual reasons - he needed to explore his own creative urges at The Jam's expense, and was afraid of The Jam never progressing. OTOH, U2 realized they were only as good as the sum of their parts - even Bono, he of the huge ego but a clear frontman.
Hi Robert, thanks for your reply. Firstly Steve Brooks the original Jam memeber, as they were a 'four piece' was PW's best school friend. The reason for splitting the Jam was only PW's decision, no one else. I can't think of many other groups that have done that at their peak? He was never afraid of the Jam progressing, he just wanted to try other things as you mentioned, he was only 24. Surely you must agree that U2 have been past their sell by date for quite some time? Can i reccomend you watch 'About The Young Idea' Jam documentary that came out last year, i think you would enjoy it... Thanks Jason.
I wish I went to this performance of his, I went to another one of the Kimmel appearances where he mostly played non-Jam stuff aside from Town Called Malice.
But the accent? He can't do his own accent anymore. I don't mind his fake American accent but when he's singing a song like this, one originally recorded with his own speaking accent, the US yeehaws, as evidenced here, sound bloody ridiculous to me.
He definitely produced his best work with Rick and Bruce shame it ended when it did, the three of them created something really special. Of all the music I’ve collected over 40+ years if I could only keep 1 part it would be my Jam albums.

Honestly, I'm sort of partial to what you say. I mean I saw Weller in Hollywood back in 2008, and having not followed his career throughout the years. I heard a considerable difference in the way he now sings to the way he once did, but in all fairness, Morrissey doesn't sound the same either, albeit still familiar. I mean, what Jam/Weller fan wouldn't want to hear him say "It's not important foh' you to know moi naim" instead of "It's not impotunt for you to know my name." Ha. Ha.
I think his abandoning his own speaking accent when he sings was his biggest artistic mistake. The power of the brilliant All Mod Cons, Setting Sons and Sound Affects music and lyrics was given even more bite because of the honesty in the vocals. Now, I genuinely believe that he's so used to singing in his fake American drawl that he's actually incapable of singing in his proper accent anymore. When he does a Jam song now, it sounds like John flipping Wayne singing The Jam :)
In reply to all your comments I aint knocking Weller by any means as he is one of my hero's and always will be, my comment only meant that some of the old tunes sounded better back then and maybe some of them should be left there,Running on the Spot is one of my top 5 Jam songs. The idea here is to leave comments on what you think teckertime, having seen The Jam,Style Council, The Paul Weller Movement, Red Wedge tour and the Modfather , I aint living in the past just giving my input.
My problem with this is his singing accent. His fake American drawl has been effective on a lot of his solo songs but when he's singing a song which he originally recorded (powerfully and honestly) in his own speaking accent, the resulting yeehaws, as evidenced here, sound bloody ridiculous.
Saw The Jam live 3 times. In my view they peaked with 'Setting Sons' although 'The Gift' is better than 'Sound Affects'. Weller was right to finish it where he did in my view, that having been said, nothing he has written since The Jam has been quite as good, although still a darn sight better than most of the utter shite out there.
As a big Jam fan, I'll say it is great to see him performing Jam songs........ problem is, he can't sing them anymore with the same passion and energy as when he first recorded them. The voice is just not there. For that reason, a Jam reunion would just not work.
As someone who's seen the jam several times and heard both songs live.....I think these songs are the wrong way round tempo wise. I'd never seen these videos until just now. Cheers
I think the timbre of the voice sounds fine. My problem is the accent.
