Rhinog Fawr Hike: Walking in Wild Snowdonia, Rhinogydd Range, North Wales

- A tough but incredibly rewarding 7 mile (there and back) Autumn walk up the wonderfully remote, rugged and wild Rhinog Fawr, in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales.
The route, which starts from a carpark down a long single-track road with two cattle gates (nearest postcode LL41 4DE), passes the picturesque Pistyll Gwyn waterfall and pool, perfect for a swim on a warm day. Sadly, we had cloud and wind so we gave it a miss, but we will definitely be back to test those waters.
From here we made our way onto marsh land, which serves as a nature reserve, it was very boggy in places. The other side of the marsh are the roman steps, which we followed for a short time before making our way over to the mountain path and towards the incredible Llyn Du, which we skimmed stones in on the way back down!
After a bit of scrambling along side the LLyn, we made a push up to the peak, again, the path can be wet, slippery and can call for thoughtful foot placement at times, but massively fun. Sadly, the cloud had come in thick for the last 150 meters so visibility wasn't the best, but it was very peaceful and soulful on the top of Rhinog Fawr so we spent some time talking and eating before heading down the path we had taken to get up.

UA-cam ate my comment. Trying again. Loved the waterfall and the sounds of the river at the beginning. Which of you guys got to climb back down all those rocks to get your camera? I know how hard that can be on a harder climb. Great footage! So many rocks to scramble over. I adore bouldering myself. When the clouds opened up and the lush green valley opened up......ahhhh so incredible. Well done. On another note. Have you guys heard of Raglan castle in Wales? That is where my grandmothers family came from and they added a "d" to the end of their last name for Ragland. Back during King Henry the ..... not sure which number, he was. Maybe the 1300's if I remember correctly. So I for a very long time have always had a deep interest in Wales. I can always spot when movies are filmed there. Maybe one day I will be able to visit and of course, come see you guys! ~RVA~

Nice one Ceri and Kat. Loved that walk. Looked amazing. The boulder path looked like a bit of care was needed at times. Snowdonia sure is beautiful. Some footage captured as always. Hi Ceri & Kat, “Wow” just doesn’t cut it - what a hike! Such an enjoyable video to watch. Love the endless stone walls and the gorgeous rugged views . Storybook-esque with all the fog. The boulders and terrain are very reminiscent of the Chilkoot Pass from Alaska into Canada (speaking of the gold rush a there is one for you!). What are the pink flowers starting at around 7:45? Another great adventure guys. Lived the rugged scenery. Everytime we go to Snowdonia just after the Coed-y-Brenin mountain bike centre we look across at the Rhinogs & say that one day we will visit this seldom visited part of Wales. The going did look tough in places with all those rocks & boulders. There are a few parts of Dartmoor that have similar rock fields. They can slow you down a lot trying to navigate through. Glad you got the drone up as it gives a unique perspective. Kat was definitely the winner at the skimming contest. A very enjoyable video. Take care . Martin & Michelle. 🙂🙂👍👍

We can speak very highly of Barmouth, for a potential base camp area maybe for your future visits, it had everything access to the mountains, the amazing bridge, shops and plenty of cafés and restaurants 😀

Oh yes! When you sent the pictures on insta the other day, we knew this was going to go straight into the Epic bin. Waterfalls really are magic, and that first one was no exception. Yippee kai yay indeed. It's incredible how much of you land has been formed the same way the mountains and valleys here were, through glaciers in the last ice age. I can't help but think if you guys had trees, or if we had more sheep, our outdoor places might look remarkably similar. Pity there was too much wind for 🦅 one to take flight. Our favourite thing about the hiking over there on a good day is how you don't have to wait for the mountain tops to enjoy the views. So much to see over the whole trail. Nice boulder scrambles there. We feel like you guys don't get to enjoy that type of hiking enough. That was a fair bit of glacier 💩. Rough, rugged, and quiet sounds about as perfect as it gets. Pity when the clouds obstruct the views, but they add to the atmosphere. Pretty dramatic when it finally breaks. That was an incredible adventure guys. Lovely to come along with you on another true epic.

Climbing around that lake seemed a bit scary, are the stones slippery? Dramatic place, looked like you had fun trying to heave yourselves over the boulders. Shame you missed the views from the peak but it is the journey, not the end, I am sure you'll get clear skies next time. hahahha, just seen the skimming, well done Kat, the Champ! JS

Cheers - this area has a very Norwegian look and feel; but it is Snowdonia and very impressive! If you enjoyed that hike you will enjoy and love 100 of miles of trails in Norway (no - I am not paid by the local tourist office). I would love to visit Snowdonia one day - the stone walls in the terrain are very impressive reminders of old and harder times. And as always your presence on the movies are fun, engaging and impressive!

I do like a walk of the beaten track and Snowdonia park is a great place for that, although we all like a view I also like walking up into the clouds as you know you are higher up if in the clouds, nice walk with a bonus of a stone skimming, nice

Fabulous area, shockingly quiet for snowdonia, must have felt like the whole landscape was yours alone. A wonderful peak, I do like it when a mountain top has a storm shelter to enjoy the moment in. Hope you are both well, Winnie

It truly is like another world there. Those clouds touching the ridge and the rocky patches are so cool. Ceri's pant provide such a nice contrast to the landscape as well. This was some very technical hiking! Always a pleasure watching you!

Are you guys watching old cowboy movies from the US? Yippee ki yay?! I think that surprised Kat! Well, you were on an old pony path, so it works. The old walls, and Roman steps, were so cool. It got really rocky, but ever so pretty as you went along, and the boulders at the side of the lake were gnarly. It was really amazing as the clouds lifted, adding their own beauty. Sorry, guys, Kat is clearly the world champion rock skipper! Fun hike you two!

Beautiful waterfalls, had to google translate Yippee-Ki-Yay (expression of joy) It does look wonderful walking in wild Snowdonia, well it was wonderful watching you guys doing it, seemingly almost alone braving the wild rocky trail. Some of that rock scrambling did look rather rough going, with those heavy looking back packs on.

ow this hike was super cool I love these lakes on the mountains You are lucky I don't think you have snakes like we have when you hike on the mountains . Great views from the top You should stack some rocks on top of each other on peaks like this like you see on some hikes and return a year or two later to see how it has grown from other hikers adding to the pile 19 .18 was very cool shot

Nice to be back in Snowdonia an what a place for an Air B&B, perfect! Really enjoyed this, as I have not been out for 2 weeks and with a weather warning in place for heavy rain for the next 3 days...aggg! What a great reward for 15 minutes walking and yes, a perfect place for a dip (in the warm). Looked a nice path to follow but got a bit boggy too but a great place to stop for a brew and a homemade flapjack - yaki da! I bought a massive pack of hand warmers from Amazon last year and just put some in my backpack just this week, they are real good too. The path around the tarn looked a bit iffy mind and it was no picnic to the summit. What a shame that mist did not clear for you after all that hard work but that shelter must have been a welcome relief from the wind. Good to see you got some great views on the way down and that skimming was dam embarrassing from Ceri lol but well done Kat, my money was always on you! Cheers Alan

The Rhinogs are considered some of the hardest hiking in Snowdonia, this mini walk sapped us all! The hand warmers sound like a great shout and that was the flapjacks I had mentioned, complete coincidence lol!
Yea my skimming as a disgrace to be honest lol, you wouldn't know I'd grown up on the West Coast of Wale and spent many a summer skimming stones into the Irish Sea lol. I feel we need a rematch! Regain honour 🎖

Yay, your in our neck of the woods! That was a mean walk, started all forests waterfalls and lovely paths, then it was Boulder City!! It looked harsh. Shame the weather came down and took your views away. Great hike though .loved it 🍻

The Rhinogs are great, near Caider Idris too, Barmouth makes a great HQ if you can find a campsite or holiday cottage 👍 this area is considered the badlands of Snowdonia and can be really treacherous underfoot.
